Coast Sushi & Sashimi

Lovely cocktails and the food is fantastic; you'll be happy with whatever you order. My sister is pregnant and they were extremely accommodating making all of our sushi cooked 🍣

I am pleasantly surprised by Coast after my third dinner here. The service is great and I love the food (essentially Japanese and sushi). There are some really creative dishes as well and decent selection of Sake. It's typically not hard to walk in or get delivery although it can be expensive for delivery and portions are not huge. I tend to sit at the bar for sushi but tables are often plentiful and available for families and small groups. For the area, it's a great option and I find myself returning although I would recommend slightly larger portions for my American belly.

This is the best sushi place we've found on the Northside....granted after finding Coast Sushi, we've been much less inclined to explore others! The staff is always very friendly and attentive and the speciality sushi is genuinely special, tasty, and reasonably priced.

Sushi is pretty good here- I think it used to be better. Sashimi cuts are a bit thin though. They have great tempura appetizer and lots of rolls and such.

Stopped by for drinks and to order dinner to go. Angel greeted and took care of us. Ordered the spider, creamy, spicy tuna and scallop maki rolls. We enjoyed martinis while we waited. The food was delicious. Will definitely be back! Props to Angel marking the box which nigiri was smoked salmon:)

I’ve been eating at Coast for nearly a decade, and it’s always been quality, tasty sushi. Still is. It has also always been a little expensive. But after their recent price increases they’re sky high now. I assumed it was just the market, but tonight I checked around for some place new and discovered that they’ve left the market in the area, far, far behind. If their clientele will continue to patronize them with their prices being so much higher than other quality competitors in the area, good for them. But they’ve gotten too rich for my blood. It’s just too poor a value at this point. For context, a spicy salmon roll with avocado and a white dragon, one regular roll and one signature roll, come to $38. Wow.

Dragon Maki, Rainbow Maki and salmon spring roll were all good. Portion sizes for the rolls were small (as expected based on other reviews) but everything seemed fresh and I got hardly any bones in the unagi on the dragon roll (- that's always a plus when you order a dragon roll). The portion size of the salmon spring rolls was good and also crunchy. A mini miso soup came with something I ordered I guess. It was hot to the touch and a mild spicy. I don't often eat spicy foods but it was pretty good. Service was very fast- though I went on a Fri afternoon at the beginning of the shift. My order was carry-out but the inside seemed nice, clean and big. I also liked the packaging for my takeout- I thought it was eco-friendly. Staff was very attentive to me. I walked to the Evanston location from maybe 5-10 mins away, very nice area.

I love this place.... But it's currently closed! Please don't go here since it's currently under renovations. We planned a date night and I didn't think to call, but nowhere on their website or maps or here does it say that they're closed for renovations or changing locations. So please don't waste your time

I visited Coast sushi in December of 2019 with one of my besties on Yelp (Vikki Y.) who visited from out of town. On the hunt to find something in the area, we finally agreed to Coast sushi, since neither one of us had yet paid a visit to this restaurant. I placed our reservation a few days beforehand and enjoyed a perfect girl's night. Despite the chilly temps, the ambiance is warm, cozy, and inviting. The interior design had a Zen feel with some modern touches. To celebrate the holiday, they had a Christmas tree set up in the middle of the restaurant. We found seating in the back and on a random week night, we noticed this location was popular with the locals. It was full for a Thursday evening. Once seated, I scanned the space and immediately noticed the dominance of estrogen in the room. I kid you not, more than 90% of the people in the room were female and it seemed like all of us were here on a girl's night. For starters, we were given an appetizer of fried seaweed with dipping sauces. One of the sauces stood out more to me and I think it was wasabi infused. I liked the subtle heat from it and felt the sauce complements the crunchiness of the seaweed. We also ordered a pot of hibiscus tea and the floral notes hit the spot on a cold winter day. It's a BYOB place. The sounds of lively conversations abound and sushi appeared to be the main event. Vikki ordered the Salmon Nama Don. I ordered the Coast crab signature maki and South scallop. We both loved our dishes. The textures were perfect and everything tasted fresh. There was no lack of flavor. Our server was kind and she responded to any requests swiftly without any feelings of intrusion. The south scallop was something I looked forward to ordering but initially, I knew nothing of its name or what it consists of other than the Yelp picture which piqued my interest. I showed her the photo, and asked about it prior to ordering. From there, our waitress took the initiative to go to the kitchen and get the exact name from the chef. It was a small ask but kudos to our server who made the extra effort to follow through. I plan to return again with the hubby during warmer months when outdoor seating is available. I really liked this place and it's good to know there is a solid sushi spot in my neighborhood. I would definitely come back when I get a chance.

Used to be our favorite spot for sushi but portions have gotten smaller and prices have really skyrocketed. I know this is Covid effect but it was already on the pricy side to begin with. Will be saving for super special occasions from now on instead of "hey let's get sushi!" nights.

I'll start by saying I don't eat fish so I can't speak to the non vegi sushi but the sweet potato tempura sushi is out of this world! I could eat it everyday...give it a try! Great restaurant and I love the patio in the summer!

I do not enjoy posting negative reviews - at all. I try to give restaurants multiple chances before I do so. But this will be the last time I ever order from Coast. Let the picture speak for itself. This was $100 of sushi. Bullshit.

This has been our go to 'fancy' sushi place since we moved to the Evanston area a few years ago. We ordered takeout for two adults recently (August 2021) after not having patronized this location since March 2020. While the food was good it wasn't quite as amazing as we remember and the cost seemed astronomical for what we got ($130 for two people, 4 rolls and a few pieces of sashimi). I got a spicy kind crab roll that was $27 and it was just 8 pieces and less than a couple inches in diameter and nothing to write home about. For the price, we decided we would go elsewhere from now on - disappointing!

This is the best shushi place ever except it's a little expensive. Otherwise great coast is delicious and fancy, I only usually order from the place but service is pretty decent to. It's yummy

I ordered takeout from here for the first time three weeks ago during this pandemic. I ordered three different Maki rolls and they arrived exactly as described. They are a little bit on the smaller side but they were tasty. Pricing seems to be fair considering that this is a chain and their presence in Evanston. I would order again and try more items off the menu.

BEST SUSHI NEAR EVANSTON. This place is awesome and it is the best sushi ever. I love the ebi shrimp tempura roll so much, and if you go at dinner time they give you a little free seaweed appetizer!! Definitely a must go.

NORMALLY, 5 STARS. BUT, NOT WEARING MASKS. I live very near Coast. I love Coast. Pre-Covid, we had sushi there at least once a week. In May, I went to pick up an order. As I walked in, the hostess was not at the door to hand me the food. Thanks to their cutout, I could see right into the kitchen; and I could see the hostess in the middle of the kitchen with no mask on. She came out quickly -- too quickly to have washed her hands -- and had put on a mask. So, she had touched her cloth mask, her ears and probably her skin and hair, and was now touching my food. I politely told her it was disappointing to see her not following the rules. She got very defensive. I told her that no matter the reason, it was both the right thing to do and the law. She was icy. Pre-covid, we would always wave to the staff when we passed. So, I am in the habit of looking in the window to see who is inside. Every day, there is always at least one chef (or several) with his mask below his nose or totally off. At first, I'd make excuses for them. But, at this point I can't come up with enough. They are great at what they do. But, they are blatant with their disregard for masks usage. I hate not ordering from them. But, until either they get their act together or the pandemic is "over", I'm eating elsewhere.

Still tasty sushi, but their recent price increases are through the roof. They cost way, way more than the market in general, for some rolls approaching double other quality competitors in the area. If their market accepts these prices, good for them, but they've gotten too rich for my blood. It's just too poor of a value.

Have been a customer here for years and while it's super expensive and ordering by phone was often error prone, we kept coming back because the food was good. Tonight, we went (party of 2) for dinner. There were maybe 5 tables seated when we got there. We were briefly acknowledged by two separate people but left standing without a table or further acknowledgement for over 10 minutes. Nothing. And they were not busy. Like the sushi chefs has nothing to do not busy. We left, we won't be back as guests are clearly not welcome in this establishment. So much for 7-8 years of being good customers.....

I feel bad giving bad reviews but it has to be done. The staff was super friendly so this is strictly about the food but this was the worst sushi I've ever had, as I compared it I think grocery store sushi is actually better. The prices were astronomical for what you get, we ended up spending $60 before tip on 2 rolls (6 pieces each) and 2 apps. The size and quality of the sushi rolls actually really made me angry for the $14 price tag each, 6 rolls?!? I've never seen 6 tiny rolls for that price. As someone else described it the size of a quarter, with those prices I was expecting large specialty rolls like at other places. They tasted like straight up mush with no flavor and it was such a joke there was a flake of fish in them. Sorry but I don't recommend this place at all!

Bad night? We joined two of our best friends last night to celebrate our anniversaries. Both couples were married on the same date 56 years ago. We chose Coast on their recommendation as they had a great experience there a few weeks ago. My wife had seared tuna and I chose the sea-bass. I returned a straight up beefeater martini that was a bit cooler than room temperature and quite watered down which those of us who enjoy this classic is a sure sign that the ice was scooped out of a watery bin. By the way, the martini menu lists anything served in a martini shaped glass, but the list of perhaps 10 choices only included such delights as strawberry, pineapple, mango and other unmentionables. My wife had seared tuna and I chose the chilean sea bass. We each had a seaweed salad and miso soup. The latter not nearly as good as was we get at two local favorite sushi spots. Jane's tuna was ok, though somewhat overdone. My sea bass was roasted dry. This delightful experience was just short of $150 including the tip. The other reviews suggest that we just had a bad night, but I doubt we will try again.

Been a regular at Coast for years. The staff are friendly and they recognize my family and I when we come in the door, which is always appreciated. The atmosphere is very relaxing, and would certainly make for an intimate/romantic evening if you are looking for a date night sushi place. I like their menu, which includes all the classic sushi offerings that you would expect from any sushi restaurant, but also some really great appetizers and salads. I highly recommend the Tuna Tartar and the Rock Shrimp Salad, both of which are excellent. A personal favorite roll is the White Dragon. They also regularly have special rolls and entrees that are worth considering. Most recently we had an excellent roll with Tuna and seasonal fresh mango.

I was hearing mixed things in the reviews about Coast post-covid. I'm glad I came here to experience it for myself. I will say there may have been a price increase since COVID, but it's not more than $1 or 2 per entree/roll. The appetizers and soups/salads are still very reasonably priced. I had good, kind servers and the guys behind the sushi bar are always very friendly and smiley. Has nice ambiance as well as good drinks and food. I would argue one of the best sushi places in Illinois and hands down best in Evanston.

LOVE THIS PLACE! This place is amazing! Great customer service and the food is delicious too! Currently, due to COVID-19 we can't dine in so we order and go get it since they are accepting phone and online orders with curbside pick up. They will even sell sealed bottles of wine/saki! We used to live closer but now we're at least 25 minutes away without traffic! So clearly it's worth it! You can't go wrong with this place!

This place is my go-to for sushi in the North Shore. High quality food and lovely service. Couldn't ask for more.

Probably the worst customer service I've ever had to deal with. Not worth it for their overpriced food and inconvenient location. Also never wear masks/wear them improperly. Not cool.

Coast is very good. And much better when you eat in versus order delivery. Taste is way better. Quality is good. Creativity is good. We like.

Pleasant atmosphere and nice waiters but that's about it. Table was dirty and even after we requested for it to be wiped it still remained sticky. Restaurant smelled like dirty wet rags. As far as the sushi, it wasn't good at all. The seaweed was hard and thick and none of us could bite it. You either swallow it whole or spit it out. Also, the sushi pieces was buried under a breading and put together unevenly. We were also surprised to get reusable wooden chopsticks. They looked dirty, smelled bad and felt still damp. Eeh. Won't be coming back.

I have been a big fan of Coast since my wife and I frequented the Damon location while living in Logan Square. The food is always fresh an the service is wonderfully informative. The special rolls are always a hit and the nightly specials are creative, tasty and cool. BYOB is the theme here with a waved corkage fee on orders of $20 or more. Enjoy

We used to come here frequently on the weekends, prior to Covid. The food was delicious and the service was on point. A couple of times when we ordered take out (post Covid) it was "hit or miss", however we continued to patronize this local business. Today, on Mother's Day, the food was just terrible. No way to "sugar coat" it or make it nice. The seafood soup only had three pieces of fish in it and had no flavor. The couple pieces of sushi pieces I tasted, tasted "off" not like I remembered the Po' Boy sushi to taste like. It just appeared to be thrown together with no thought at all! You can only give a business so many chances. There comes a time when you have to cut your losses and move on. My hard earned money means something to me and I feel a business should take pride in their food and customer's. Sadly, that is not the case. Well, goodbye Coast Sushi & Sashimi, it was fun while it lasted.

I've been going to this place for years. They have the best and most fresh sushi. It is quite expensive compared to other suburban sushi locations but it's definitely worth it! I highly recommend trying their rainbow and volcano rolls.

Fun date night! Tried several rolls and a couple appetizers, really fresh. Went on a busy night but was able to get a table. Staff was attentive, appetizers took a bit to come out but it was worth waiting for! Will definitely try it again!

TL;DR - Adequate but nothing special. Small portion sizes in comparison to other comparable places. The food at coast was pretty tasty overall. We got a few veggie rolls and a few maki rolls, along with some miso soup. The miso soup was our favorite part of the meal. Despite this, we were disappointed with the quality/size of the rolls as a whole. We'd eat here again, bu only get a couple items.

Really good sushi with out of the box choices that I've never had before. They even have an awesome Spicy Miso soup that you can start off with. Yum! The ambiance is good, albeit QUIET. So if you're looking for a quiet night out, go here. If you're looking for a lively atmosphere, this isn't it. Unfortunately, they don't allow dogs on their patio and you have to leash them up outside their large wooden wall, so I would steer clear of bringing my dog there again since she was upset to be separated from us the entire time. This place is a win for someone who left the city and is still looking for sushi!!! Its off the main drag just a smidge, but its totally worth it of you are looking for a few rolls. Enjoy.

This is sushi done right! Extremely fresh and flavorful. Even the California rolls were awesome. Will definitely be coming back here!

We recently moved to NW Evanston from SE Evanston where our go-to sushi place was Siam Paragon. We wanted to find another close sushi place in our new neighborhood, and we just loved Coast Sushi! Their rolls were a good size, very flavorful, and arranged beautifully. We also had the seaweed salad which was fantastically fresh. What I especially liked about Coast was that it was a nice treat to eat in their restaurant. Many good sushi places I've been to have been more utilitarian in their dining rooms but Coast definitely curated an experience, all for a reasonable price.

This place has delicious sushi!!! It is definitely on the pricey side, but the fish is fresh and super yummy. They have some unique rolls and great cocktails. If you're looking for a great sushi place in the Evanston area, this is the place to go.

We've frequented Coast a number of times + ordered in and are always left with the same feeling - way too expensive - quality is a average The speciality rolls like volcano and others are $13 and not so special. Our last experience - with 2 kids and no alcohol set us back $90 with tip, if it was amazing, maybe could have been ok with the cost but all rolls with avocado were mushy and the presentation was subpar The one positive is the outdoor seating, other than that stick with Whole Foods, Sea Ranch or others that will surpass the quality at half the cost

I'm appending/updating my first review, which I'm leaving below the ***. However, they deserve more than 3 stars, so I'm editing. First of all, Coast now employs Jane, a 5/5 server - kind, charming, articulate, knowledgeable. I recommend asking for her if you go in. She stands out. Second, the food & drinks, which I always consider most important. Perhaps it would help if I gave a detailed report out on my dinner this past Saturday Ginger, Pear Blushing Geisha and Cucumber martinis - they do make lovely, crisp, tasty martinis. Ginger and pear were the best - least sweet and most clean flavors. Blushing Geisha and the Cucumber were on the sweet side for me, wouldn't order again, but if you like strawberry, try the geisha. Wasabi Shumai - fine (3.5/5), but could use a bit more seasoning, and there was no wasabi taste. Sauce was good, and I enjoyed them served on the cucumber slice. Wish the pork were more finely ground. Salmon Spring Roll (3/5) Wouldn't order again. It was just a piece of salmon (a good one though) fried in a thin spring roll wrapper. The sauce was sweet, a decent compliment. Not bad, but not a stand out Rock Shrimp Salad (5/5) - excellent. Hot & cold, crunchy and creamy. Yum - order this! Wasabi Maki - (4.5/5) they do a lovely job on the asparagus, which adds a nuttiness and a crunch. Note it's not hot at all, so the name is deceiving. Hamachi can be one of the more fishy fish, but it wasn't. Salmon Cucumber Maki - (4/5) like the asparagus in the wasabi roll, they do a great job with the cucumber in this one. Salmon had a nice texture, no complaints on quality Spicy Creamy - (2/5) very bland, somehow. Tuna was not in pieces, but chopped which did not lend to a firm texture. I didn't try anyone else's entrees, so can't comment on theirs -- the Uni looked fresh, however, sometimes it's squishy. As always with all the food, lovely presentation Finally, I maintain it's too expensive. I almost always spend about 150 for 2 for 2 drinks each, 1-2 appetizers and dinner. No dessert. I'd be much more inclined to frequent the establishment if the prices were lower, although I suspect that it's due to the high rent/taxes in Evanston, which is a shame. I guess you can't blame them, but it does keep me away. *** To be clear, I would would absolutely eat here again, and the quality of the fish is not in question. However, a restaurant has to do at least something special to get 4 stars, and has to knock me out of the park for 5. Here, the food was very expensive - we wound up spending 120 for 2...that's a lot of money considering I can do the same at another sushi restaurant for 80. We were dining in a group of 9 and we split the bill. We did accommodate one couple of the 9 who didn't drink nor eat any of the 4 apps we ordered and I think they only spent about 40 total. The server was a young woman who clearly didn't know what she was doing; we asked her specific questions about preparations and alcohols, and she really just didn't know. I actually felt kind of bad for her - she should be better trained to understand what goes into sushi and the specials. Our dining companions all enjoyed their food, and again, I'm not really complaining, I'm just saying it's not a stand out.

Moving from the city to the burbs can be a bit of drag, especially when your city faves just aren't as easily accessible as they used to be. Well, friends. Coast has an Evanston location. And it's just the same deliciousness as the Damen location... only closer! To me! I would be content just ordering three white dragon rolls and calling it a day (I'm disgusting), but I also have a lot of love for the Coast Crab. And the dragon. And the rainbow. And whatever special tuna roll they had a few weeks ago with fresh jalapeno. Everything is always delicious and beautifully presented. The biggest differentiators between this venue and the city location is that it is not BYOB and it's SUPER quiet and chill. Great for an intimate dinner, not so happening for a GNO. I'm pleased as punch that I can get my sushi fix much closer to home.

Having moved into the neighborhood about nine months ago, this has become my daughter's and my favorite sushi restaurant in the city, including the bigger-name downtown places. The nigiri is consistently the freshest and most tender and delicious I have had in the Chicago area, and we crave the dragon roll! The staff is prompt, responsive, and friendly. They also are very adept at making my four-year-old's experience very positive! There is a nice children's menu, but my child likes "pink fish, orange fish, and yellow fish" (tuna, fresh salmon, yellowtail), and Coast gets it perfectly every time! We brought my mom and grandmother here last night, and they both raved about it!

Ate here last night for first time. Local and very convenient. Crowded so we sat at the sushi bar. Very nice staff and helpful. Had spicy tuna and maguro. Everything came promptly and was delicious. There is 5% reduction for cash instead of credit card. I wd return to try other dishes.

Coast is excellent. Our go to place for sushi in Evanston. They do a really good job for takeout. Everything is prepared and presented really well. Would definitely recommend.

The sushi is great, and we love the Evanston location. It is located on a quiet, tree-lined street which is great for outdoor dining in the summer. Highly recommend.

Great Sashimi but not many roll options. Everything we've had from Coast has been delicious, but you kind of have to know your sushi to pick a good roll. Size and quantity of the rolls have been pretty reasonable, some places give you less. It is on the pricer side of some sushi restaurants but the fish does taste fresh.

Great sushi !!!! Loved this place when it first move into bucktown around 2004ish. ( not sure if same owners or not but E-town c oast is just as good!!) All the rolls are great & the pieces of naguri are big, fresh, & delicious. i would definitely recommend this place if you are in the mood for sushi!!

I ordered sushi through grubhub. The driver delivered the order to the wrong house. The driver then took an additional 45 minutes to deliver to the right house which was 10 minutes away. Overall it was 90 minutes. The restaurant took zero accountability. Said it was grubhubs issue. Grub hub said it was the restaurants issue. I asked to talk to the owner and apparently they don't work there lol. Beware of delivery from Coast.

This place is a must for Sushi in Evanston. Went for dinner on a Saturday night and were seated quickly. The staff was very friendly and they started the night with some complementary seaweed tempura. We ordered a few rolls and ended up ordered two more because they were that good. The fish was very fresh and the "fresh philly roll" was the highlight especially if you're a fan of salmon.

Coast is a welcome addition to Central Street! We had a party of 5 for dinner on a rainy Saturday evening, no reservations, but we were seated right away since we arrived so early. We had multiple rolls, nigiri, edamame, and chicken teriyaki (for the 4 year old), and everything was wonderful. We especially liked the wasabi roll. The decor is very hip, the service is attentive, the employees are friendly, and we will certainly be back. If not to done in, for carry-out.

Heard good things about this restaurant so we thought we would give it a try. Unfortunately there are a lot of sushi restaurants nowadays so I'm sure competition is tough. The décor of the restaurant is nice and service was pretty good. However, this restaurant is slightly more on the pricey side as sushi restaurants in the suburbs go and I really didn't think the quality of the sushi justified the price. We got the Coast Sushi Special roll which was just not very exciting and was $13 for the roll. The spider crab roll was the best we had and it was $9 for four pieces I believe. All in all for two people with an appetizer, 4 rolls, and one drink, the total bill came to around $60. To me, there are better quality sushi places at better price points in the area.

My sister's birthday was a few weeks ago, so I decided to treat her out to dinner & a play. The play that we ended up seeing was in a theater in Edgewater. She had a taste for sushi afterwards, so we decided on visiting Coast after hearing rave reviews from a trusted friend. Her rave review was for the Bucktown location of this place, but we decided to go up to the Evanston location of this restaurant since it was closer to where we were at. To me, this place looks like a typical sushi restaurant. Sushi bar was located in a central area of the place, with four guys behind it prepping/making rolls. My sis ordered a bunch of things: edamame (her old standby in Japanese restaurants), fried scallops (next to catfish, this is probably my second favorite dish in the fish family) & seaweed salad. The main course is where things got interesting. She ended up ordering the Po' Boy Maki (white fish tempura, white fish tempura, unagi, cream cheese, masago, spicy sauce, scallion, avocado, tempura crumb & eel sauce). I got the King Crab Maki (king crab, scallion in spicy mayo with tempura crumb, red tobiko) YUM. Both of these rolls were different & delicious. The Po Boy was kind of what I expected; the roll was spicy with a bit of a kick to it. The King Crab was nice with a lot of flavor. Service was great and food time from kitchen to table was good. What stood out to me was the location of the restaurant itself; off the main street almost by a residential area. Seemed like a very "neighborhoody" place. If the night wasn't that cold we would have eaten out in the large patio area. Hopefully soon.

This place is literally so expensive. We got two rolls of sushi and edamame and the total came to be $30.55. The sushi rolls came in four pieces - 8 pieces total. $30. We're broke college students and the sushi tasted horrible. Don't go here

UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. This space has gone through several transformations over the past couple of years - perhaps due to the fact that it's hard to spot from Central St, despite being just half a block north. Hopefully Coast will develop a sufficient following that it's around for a long time. The decor is modern and sleek, the outdoor seating is great (especially late-night in the summer), and the food is incredible and interesting. I always think sushi is expensive, but relatively-speaking the menu here is very reasonable for the quality. My only beef is that there's no affordable cold sake option (cheapest is a $28 bottle), but for how good it is I'll suck it up and drink the hot stuff.
