20 Outstanding BYOB Restaurants in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Girls night out and couples on the town are a constant occurrence at this popular sushi spot, which is a favorite in the area for its fish delivered daily and BYOB policy. Customers often kick things off with a round or two of nigiri before delving into the signature rolls, such as the “Sunrise” (ginger-seared tuna, mint, mango) and the “White Dragon” (shrimp tempura, avocado, eel sauce, cream cheese). Choose wine wisely — management caps it at one bottle per couple." - Jeffy Mai, Nicole Schnitzler

Google
Delicious, fresh food that is beautifully presented. We came in for a couple of cocktails and appetizers. Service was excellent - perfectly attentive but in no way did we feel rushed. The menu was extensive and had the more traditional sushi offerings as well as more unique preparations.

Sarah Berk

Google
Great neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Don’t miss the hamachi carpaccio, it’s the best thing on the menu and it’s not on the menu. Lychee mocktail is made with sprite and I subbed Perrier. Very light and the two lychees were a great touch. Some of the best nama sake nigiri; all the nigiri is top notch. Don’t forget to add a miso or spicy miso.

Kirby Julian

Google
great neighborhood sushi spot. They fly in fresh fish from Japan daily and you can tell by how buttery and fresh it tastes. Would highly recommend to those who want a nice, quiet, quality sushi night.

Google
Coast Sushi Bar in Wicker Park is everything I remember, and then some. The sushi and seafood appetizers are phenomenal, the service is divine, and they now have a liquor license! I’m so happy that I was able to enjoy a nice meal on their 20th anniversary, on a Saturday night in Chicago. The Angry Salmon Appetizer and the Firecracker Roll were absolutely perfect! How I miss this city! 🥰🔥🎉 And a special thanks to my amazing server, Ricardo!

Google
Best place in the city for quality sushi. The fatty tuna was amazing. Sashimi portions are generous. I ordered way too much... salmon skin roll with requested jalapeño and cream cheese was heavenly and balanced per my cardiologist. Great place during the week...practically had the restaurant to myself. The cocktails are also delish. The lychee martini was so paradise!

Google
Met a friend for dinner here on a Thursday evening. I haven’t been here since before 2020, they now only have one section of the restaurant, it’s not as big as it used to be but the quality of the food is still the same. We got the edamame as an appetizer and 6 rolls for dinner and mango and chocolate mochi for dessert. Everything was so good and the server was very friendly.

Rhonda Henderson

Google
My husband and I went here for my first Sushi experience. The service was amazing, the atmosphere is nice and it's BYOB. My husband absolutely loved the sushi I found out that I am more of a thoroughly cooked food person. If you are a sushi person this is definitely a must try!

Katie Iuorio

Google
Fantastic local sushi place! Definitely ask about their specials, tons of fresh fish and the fresh grated wasabi is so good. Definitely worth making the trip even if you don’t live in the area. The banana maki dessert was a great way to end the meal too.

Yelp
We used to love Coast when it first opened back in 2003, great sushi, great service, friendly atmosphere. Then they got really busy, expanded in size and the quality went down fast - they also hired a lady to run front of house who had zero concept of customer service. After being loyal customers for 7-8 years (I even had several of my company parties there) we stopped going and swore we would never return. Fast forward to 2024 and we decided to give them another chance. The space is now smaller, back to its original size, the food is back to the original quality and the officious front of house lady has gone. I am now happy to recommend Coast again, whether it's for dinning in or for delivery, Coast Sushi is back on form !

Yelp
My favorite sushi in Chicago! Luckily coast is right near my apartment, so I come almost every single week. The fish is always so fresh & everyone single staff member is amazing! Highly recommend coast. It's my favorite solo date night spot to have a glass of wine, sushi, and read book.

Roxana S.

Yelp
Best place in town for Sushi ! I actually love that it is a ByOB but they also have a bar with great martinis .

Maddy N.

Yelp
We love pepe!!!! Pepe is the best. he is so helpful and kind. and the ambiance is so great. we love coast!

Yelp
Old stinky fish. Not fresh. The cucumber salmon roll tasted fishy and smelt fishy, which is an absolute no for us when it comes to eating fish. This is a strong indicator that the place does not use fresh ingredients. The veggie rolls did not taste fresh either. We could not swallow the rest of the food, hence the 1 star. Quality of food is the most important. This place is way overpriced especially for old stinky fish. Service was ok, nothing special. They do not accommodate any requests. The place appears clean inside. However, given the portion size, obviously low quality food/ingredients, and inflated price, this place is a 1 star at best. So sad, we had to find something else for dinner because we couldn't swallow this food.

Yelp
I was looking forward to some great sushi to pick up and have a nice night at home. I ordered online and went inside to get my food. I said my name twice and they gave me the food. I started eating in the car but I realized that I didn't order what I was eating. I looked at the bag- they gave me the wrong order. I called and told them I got the wrong order. I turned back and got to the restaurant and was promptly yelled at by the woman at the counter. She continued to yell even after I apologized even though I did nothing wrong. She threw the correct order at me and walked away. I can not believe I was treated so rudely for their error. I did not have to call or come back, but I did. I will not be ordering from here again.

Yelp
We ordered some sushi to go and had it as soon as it got home. Delivery was quick. But the fish was stale and both my husband and I had an upset stomach this morning. We won't be ordering from Coast Sushi Bar going forward.

Yelp
Delicious sushi, nice cocktails and fun for a group dinner or date! Friendly service as well with great recommendations - check out the specials for some fun options.

Yelp
We have had sushi from all over and this was very disappointing. I feel like they're not even trying. I would have emailed them to let them know but there is no email address before delivery and tip $85. Hate to write a bad review but coast is not the same as it used to be. Me and two tween girls were quite hungry and had tummy aches. Really sub par. Will not order again here.

Yelp
We've been going to coast for 10 years now. They're recently reopened after a renovation, and I have to say their food is just as good - if not better - than ever! Yes, their prices are higher, but honestly for quality and freshness like this I'm willing to pay it. They always tell you what they just got in and they never disappoint!

Yelp
It's always exciting finding a good BYOB sushi spot with no corkage fee. This one has been on my list to try for a while. The restaurant is pretty big too, so it's not too difficult to get a seat last minute. We got a few rolls and a sashimi entree. The sashimi was tasty and thick. Not the best sashimi I've had but still satisfied the sushi cravings. Our service was quick and accommodating as well. Overall this was a good spot to have a nice quick dinner with a bottle of wine from home.

Jordan J.

Yelp
This place has gone down hill the past couple of years. Last time I was in they gave my order to someone else so I had to wait 45 minutes for them to remake my order. The fish was quite smelly and fish shouldn't have much odor. Their prices aren't reflective of their food and they are definitely understaffed.
google avatar

Yelp
This saddens me to give this rating as I used to go to Coast for many years when it was BYOB and great food for reasonable prices....it was closed for a long time after Covid but reopened with the same menu practically but the prices are literally now almost double. Took my son for dinner in a weeknight and it was $140 with tip and this is what we ordered.....edamame, tuna tartare, namasake (salmon) roll, spicy scallop roll, tuna donburi bowl, and Mochi. No drinks, the food was average and the portions were very small. Total rip off, so much better sushi out there and for 1/2 the cost. This place will close soon

Yelp
Love this place, never disappoints! Personal favorites are - White Dragon Maki, Dragon and Volcano Maki rolls. Mocha ice creams are great as well!
google avatar

Quinn B.

Yelp
As a big sushi fan, I don't say this lightly, but after several return trips this place has some of the best sushi I've ever eaten. I love sushi that has good balances of sauce and quality fish and blends of flavors. The asparagus app is fantastic and the White Dragon is my favorite roll. I also love the ambiance in the actual restaurant when that opens up again. I will admit, it is more expensive than other options closer to me, but it is worth it. If I want to spend a little more and really enjoy my experience, this is where I go. Highly recommend. Ps- pics are from carry out, which is never as pretty but just as delicious!

Yelp
I'm catching up on Yelp reviews that were due months ago, but better late than never. My friends and I came here on a Saturday night around 6pm and of course it was packed. So we put our name in for a party of 4, went down the street to the liquor store to buy beer, and waited inside for about an hour and a half for a table. Coast Sushi is BYOB and the atmosphere is dark and intimate. They have a ton of different rolls options here along with special rolls. We ended up getting a Sashimi plate to share and two rolls each. The sushi is fresh, flavorful, and the rice is not overwhelming. I think their sushi is amazing and some of the best I've had in Chicago. Everyone in the party really enjoyed the food. I was the only person who has been to Coast before and they thought my dinner recommendation was a great choice! Since it was a Saturday night at a peak time, we had to wait a long time for our table and a long time for our food. So I won't knock them down for that. The manager ended up giving us free edamame, which was a nice gesture. Prices are fair for sushi in Chicago. Overall, I think Coast Sushi is one of my favorite sushi places in Chicago!

Yelp
I have been a long time customer and completely understand that the pandemic has wrecked havoc on small restaurants. Unfortunately, the restaurant has significantly raised prices during the past month or two where items are almost and actually in some cases doubled. A piece of crab sushi was $4 and now costs $8. Yellowtail with scallions went from $6 to $12.50. Other basic maki rolls cost $10-12. The quality is excellent but the cost of our order tonight was crazy. I wish I would have to think this but it's definitely the last time ordering from Coast Sushi for us. They do a great job but the price increase makes it way more expensive than it should be for the same quality. It has been our go to for years but unfortunately due to the pandemic's impact on their business and pricing, I'm not sure if and when we will order from their again. I never say never but $8 for a smaller piece of crap sushi is insane.
google avatar

Ari L.

Yelp
Coast is a slightly above average sushi restaurant. If the food was a little less expensive i'd probably give it 3.5 or 4 stars, but I think the quality doesn't match the price. My favorites on the menu are their sweet potato rolls, shrimp tempura and gomae. Otherwise their rolls don't really stand out. I actually prefer to order out from them then dine there. The place gets quite loud and the service can be on the slow side.
google avatar

Nikka C.

Yelp
WHY does this have 4 stars!?! I feel victimized by this bogus rating! Okay, first off, I would like to say the ambience and the staff are very nice. It's BYOB, dimly lit, and comfortably loud. But my GOD! The sushi! I love sushi and I love eating so I guess my standards are fairly high but how can a place with 1000+ reviews, 4 stars, and is not cheap be this bad?? The waiter RAVED about the off the menu signature roll: FIRECRACKER. We got so excited and it fell flat in expectation. It tasted like your average maki with spicy mayo, which is fine except it cost us $19!!!!!!!!!!!!! And because it wasn't on the menu we were shocked when we got the check Next we got another "signature" maki: Ceviche. Sounds good cuz it has scallops and shrimp...except it was mainly shrimp and had NO taste at all Then we got a plain maki, a fan fave: Ebi Tempura. They even messed this up. How!? Even the most average sushi spot can perfect this. There was SO MUCH rice and the rice was too wet Then we got 2 smoked salmon nigiri. You can guess what I thought about that. If they can't provide good Ebi Tempura, they can't provide good nigiri. It wasn't fresh. And to top it off, it took forever to get our food. Overall: do not come here unless you like sushi buffet quality sushi Sorry for the mean review but I am in shock at how terrible this was. Ruined my Friday date night

Yelp
A good friend is moving back to the East Coast and is on a mission to hit all of her favorite places before she goes. She insisted this is one of her favorite sushi joints. I'm not so sure why. Don't get me wrong, the food was good. The service was fantastic. It's BYOB. But beyond that, it was very average. I struggled to find a specialty roll that was really unique. I felt like there were three that were essentially the same with just a different fish. The portions were relatively small (I expect a house specialty roll to be at least two bites per slice). The prices were a little high for the sizes ($15ish for a specialty roll). As I said, there was absolutely nothing wrong with this place. I just didn't see the appeal. If I lived in Bucktown and needed a local, convenient sushi joint, sure. But I've got my standing faves in Lincoln Square. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place. Sorry Coast.
google avatar

Peggy T.

Yelp
At one time an excellent spot, now relegated to grocery store quality sushi. Not sure if my tastes have changed, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like these thin tasteless pieces even when I was a sashimi amateur. Not to mention the price: rather expensive. AVOID.

Adel P.

Yelp
I've always loved Coast. Have lived in walking distance of them for 10 years. But these price hikes have been a bit much. $34 for the Coast Crab roll? At least add more crab if you're going to charge so much bc that's a lot of rice for $34.
google avatar

Alexa M.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! I got the white dragon veggie roll, or something like that. It wasn't on their menu but I saw it online the online menu. The miso soup was pretty good too. It was so dark inside, I could barely see.... as you can see in the picture
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
I came in a group of ~10 and had a great dinner experience. We ordered a bunch of rolls, which were served family-style on big plates. But because we were in a large group at a large table, it was slightly difficult for everyone to taste everything without having to do some arm stretches and plate passing. As for the food, it tasted quite good but nothing exceptional. The service was attentive throughout the night, and our server made some great recommendations. It's BYOB, which we definitely took advantage of. The ambience is chill enough for a friendly hangout but also dimly-lit (it was actually hard to read the menu) and classy enough for a more intimate experience.
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
Delicious. This place serves up some amazing sushi. They have the freshest fish and ingredients and the rolls aren't overrun with rice, just a thin coating which I appreciate. For our appetizer we got the Asparagus Beef and it was super yummy. For dinner we got a bunch of sushi and all of it was fantastic. The service was great and our waiter was attentive. One thing to note though is it's byob, but don't worry. There's a liquor store basically next door to them. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Brayan S.

Yelp
Officially my favorite place to get Sushi! I have a severe Shellfish allergy and it's always nerve wrecking when trying Sushi at other restaurants but the Chef here is always willing to accommodate. They're very careful in making sure my food is made separately and that there is absolutely no cross contamination. They always go above and beyond, the food is always fresh and absolutely delicious. I get the prices are a bit high but you get what you pay for and this place is well worth it.
google avatar

Cinthya Q.

Yelp
Coast Sushi is one of my favorites (and best sushi spots in the city). Always excellent service and an atmosphere for everything from date night to a large group celebration. I love all of their sushi and think they are pretty creative when making/inventing new rolls. For example, we went in last Friday and in honor of fall they had a Japanese pumpkin roll. It was so good! I recommend a reservation, or you'll be waiting a while (especially on the weekend). It's BYOB and has no corkage fee! So bring your wine, beer, or sake! Filled with tiny slivers of jalapeño, the Spicy Miso soup was delicious and is now my 'go to' sick soup. Pork belly sliders- you can order a four or five piece plate. They were excellent. The pork belly was tender (slices, not shredded) and it came on a crunchy 'bread.' So good! Firecracker Roll- an oldie but a good. Their variation is delicious. Maine Roll- lobster roll tastes as if a lobster roll had a baby with sushi. Perfect, Maine lobster profile with a hint of lemon but sushi. Smokin' Pumpkin Roll- I was pleasantly surprised with this roll. I was half expecting it to be pumpkin and rice. But it was delicious- a mild tasting pumpkin puree with a spicy-ish portion of salmon on top. So good! Mochi was delicious, try taro, red bean, coconut, and chocolate. The prices are fair, and the rolls are more expensive if they have extravagant ingredients.

Yelp
Been here a few times and hasn't disappointed. The place is BYOB so be sure to bring your own drinks if you want alcohol to pair with the sushi. The sushi itself are pretty creative. You'll want to order at least two rolls for yourself since they are pretty small. The miso soup is great and you can ask the waitress to add a kick of spice to it if you would like. The service is great as well. Definitely a great place for a casual dinner! I recommend a reservation if you're coming in on a Friday night or a weekend, especially if you have a larger group with you. The wait can be a while if you don't have a reservation. Parking is pretty scarce in the area. There are paid for parking out front, but usually it is full. There's a streets nearby that requires permit after 6 pm. There are some streets that do not require permit for parking, but you'll probably need to circle around a few times.
google avatar

Yelp
I've ordered delivery from Coast the past two Friday nights....delivery takes a long time but boy was it worth it. Both times I got tuna on top roll - it's expensive and a little spicy but so good. I also tried the philly roll - also very good. I did try smoked salmon sashimi - very fresh, tender and good. They provide a very generous portion of wasabi and ginger. The mochi are excellent. Salted Carmel is heaven. I've been in the restaurant before but it's been awhile.. now I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Kendra M.

Yelp
Came here last night to meet a friend who makes the trek from Lakeview to Wicker Park often just for this sushi. I never would have come here otherwise but it was a good meal! I'm not really into sushi - the textures of anything beyond a simple cucumber roll overwhelm me - but I recently stopped eaten gluten which meant I couldn't chicken out and order teriyaki. The waitress was super helpful in explaining what were good options for a "beginner" like me and was also good about keeping allergies and food preferences in mind. I ended up with a cucumber roll and a salmon & jalapeño roll, with spicy miso soup and ginger salad. The spicy miso soup was great, and the tofu was super soft and actually good to eat. The dressing on the ginger salad was awesome, super light and not grainy or pooling at the bottom of the salad. Both of my rolls were good! I don't have much to compare to but I would order them again. The salmon was very fresh and flavorful. The only thing that I thought was odd about the experience was the huge list of "off-menu specials" that the waitress rattled off after seating us. If so many of their most popular rolls are "off-menu", why don't they just update their menu? Also, small portion sizes. But definitely a reliable place that's open late for good sushi!

Nora E.

Yelp
Coast was my favorite sushi pre-pandemic. The sushi is still just as good, but the prices have more then doubled. They renovated and the ambiance and entire remodel is hideous. Really sad that they ruined such good thing. Likely won't be going back

Danielle W.

Yelp
We came here for dinner last night and we weren't sure what to expect with the most recent reviews being so negative. First, walking in you notice right away the upgrades Coast has made. Instead of a dark restaurant, it's now light and bright with some nice upgrades. The menu hasn't changed much but we did miss the chalkboard with all the specials! For a starter we got the seared scallops which we have always done. The presentation wasn't great and it was a bit different then what we remembered but the scallops were cooked perfectly! For sushi we got the white dragon, firecracker, crunchy spicy tuna roll and tuna and fatty hamachi sashimi. The white dragon was always our favorite and continues to be. All the sushi was fresh and delicious! The prices did go up but hasn't everything? It's also still BYOB which you can't beat! Coast remains to be one of our favorite sushi spots in the city!
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
I went back 2 weeks ago celebrating my new job and I seriously don't ever want to go to another sushi place! We got the po boy again and the firecracker ~the suggested roll~. The po boy was delicious and still so good, but I truly loved the kick and flavor that the firecracker has. I think it might be my new favorite! I keep telling myself that I need to try all the different sushi restaurants while I live here, but it's just too good to go elsewhere!

Yelp
Been living in the neighborhood for awhile and finally made it over to Coast after trying some other local sushi spots. I went with a friend around 6pm on a week night and it was pretty dead. There were about 3 other tables worth of people and the atmosphere was just pretty quiet. We were greeted by a friendly waiter who read us the specials and let us know it is a BYOB place so if we wanted any alcohol there was apparently a liquor store right next door (my friend ventured out in the cold to get us a bottle of wine). From there, we tried the sunny side shiitake appetizer. It came out as 4 large mushroom heads stuffed with a garlic egg yolk sauce. These were pretty good and enough of an appetizer for 2. We ended up just ordering 2 rolls to split between us and we got the Coast Crab & the special roll of the day. Both rolls came out as a great taste & size and were very filling for us both. Overall we were a fan of the food, the atmosphere seemed very hit or miss. I hope to have Coast again, but might be ordering it for delivery next time (which seemed to be the trend based on all the delivery drivers that came in while we were dining there).

Yelp
Hi, My name is Sarah and I'm a sushi addict. Complete addict. If you ever ask me what I want for dinner, 9 times out of 10 I will say sushi. And the other time, I'm just trying to be considerate and let you order something you'd prefer instead. A night played out exactly as noted above with friends asking where we should grab food from. We decided on trying a new sushi spot and went with Coast. Coast has three locations and Bucktown is close to us so that's what we went with. It's BYOB which is a great bonus! Loved the atmosphere and cool graffiti on the wall. Another thing about me and my sushi eating, I must always order a sweet potato roll. I realize it's not sushi by any stretch of the imagination but it's my thing. I must get it! The sweet potato roll from Coast is delicious as it has a bit of spice to it and it's just $7. I also ordered a philly roll and was pleased with the freshness of the salmon. Everything my friend and I ordered maki wise was tasty and we really enjoyed Coast! They also ordered a flaming roll which was lit up at our table leading us to Ooooo and Aaaaah all over it.I'd definitely order from them again.

Yelp
Went back here after nearly a decade and spent $60 on sushi. I really regret it as it felt like a huge waste of $60. We had: - Small sushi dinner - Spider roll - Alaska roll - Gyoza - Extra miso The Gyoza were small and you only get 5. They drizzle the sauce on there so the Gyoza are kind of soggy. On top of this the filling was kind of pasty. There is no seaweed in the miso. The spider roll packed crab. The rice to protein ratio was terrible. The small sushi dinner was ok. The fish didn't taste great and the pieces were stretched over the rice. That looked cheap. The pickled ginger looked brown and was damp rather than fresh and crisp. On top of that, our server wasnt very cheery and rolled his eyes at us when we didn't order dessert. I wish I hadn't tipped the a-hole.
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
I heard good things, so I gave it a try- first time wasn't impressed. I had a ramen bowl, and it was too salty. My boyfriend got sushi, and it was just okay. We were willing to give it another try, and the second time was better. Seaweed salad is as expected anywhere else, which was a relief. The sushi this time was good! I think I just have a better palette since I chose which ones to get this time ;)
google avatar

Alia S.

Yelp
A nice place for dinner with good service. Their Gyoza, Hamachi, Volcano roll and Mochi were all nice, but not extraordinary - but the highlight of the evening was the Ceviche Maki. The Freshness of the lime marinated scallop with a hint of jalapeno and cilantro was definitely refreshing.

Michelle F.

Yelp
Unpleasantly surprised. We hadn't been to Coast since before COVID so when I heard that they were open for dine in services I was super excited! I'm not sure what has happened but the sushi and the service has gone downhill while the prices went drastically uphill - seriously $20 for one "mediocre" rainbow roll? We left feeling ripped off and still hungry. We won't be back.

Ross B.

Yelp
I've been here a long time ago and remember the sushi being great. And it's a great location. I was happy to see them back up and running and remodeled post Covid. I was excited to try them again, but once I saw the prices I will never go. I don't care how good the sushi is, no one in their right mind should pay $30 for a single maki roll. If you expect people to pay these prices, open shop in West Loop, not Bucktown.

Emily V.

Yelp
Wish I read the recent reviews. I don't ever leave yelp reviews but this was really bad. Absolutely outrageous prices for, as another reviewer put it, grocery store quality sushi (I've honestly had better from grocery stores). I ate three pieces and couldn't continue.
google avatar

Nimi S.

Yelp
This place is SO good especially for vegetarians. Went there for the third time last night and ordered the veggie white dragon (3 rolls, because it's that good), fried tofu, and miso soup. It's hard to find good veggie sushi that doesn't taste like a salad inside of a roll but this is one of the best! I've even converted my fiancé into a veggie sushi lover who typically gets a shrimp or tuna roll. The service is fast and they give you 5% off if you pay in cash. They are also byob which is always a plus!
google avatar

Pamela Y.

Yelp
Brought all 10 of my friends here to celebrate landing a new job. The wait staff was very accommodating of our party and sat us right away in a great area, there's a great selection of sushi variety for a big group to split. This place was also BYOB so we opened a couple bottles of wine for the table. The sashimi dishes specifically the chirashi dish was very reasonably priced. Overall great experience with a big group!
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
We frequently order Coast for delivery and have never had a problem but apparently my boyfriend didn't tip the delivery guy tonight and he vandalized our common area with this picture. We have small children in our building and tried scrubbing the picture off but cannot remove it. This is extremely disappointing

Kinch M.

Yelp
The portions were almost comically small. My girlfriend and I bought $52 worth of food and we were both hungry again 5 minutes later. The fried tofu was also soggy. The rest of our meal was decent, there just wasn't enough of it. Pretty disappointing meal overall.

Yelp
This place deserves 4 stars for the food... but 3 stars given the price. Has been carry out only for the past few years. Spend at least $60 cash for one person carry out and always still hungry afterwards.

Yelp
I literally just left this restaurant and I'm in the car writing this as my mom is driving. I chose this restaurant because it is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Chicago. My mom and I came here tonight because my mom was craving sushi, and I insisted we went here since it was my one of my favorite sushi places. Let me tell you why it is my favorite sushi place. First, it is BYOB with no cork fee. Second, the food here is fairly consistent with its deliciousness. Third, it opens til 12am weekdays. I've been here a fairly good amount of times. So why the 1 star you ask? Well, I came tonight with my mom and she doesn't eat raw fish. From the moment we sat down I told our waitress that my mom cannot eat raw fish and asked her to tell me which ones were cooked. So we ordered 3 rolls of COOKED sushi then went to get a bottle of wine and came back. Everything was fine, and we proceeded to order 2 more rolls; of which I asked her again which ones were cooked. I don't work here, I don't remember what rolls you told me earlier were cooked and not cooked. So we ordered 2 rolls and when it came.... my mom and I each took a piece and they were raw. We then told the waitress and she took it back. So the bill came out to $52 and we paid in cash. I decided not to tip 20% and rounded it up to $60; making it 15%. My reasoning for this was how did you do so well the first round of sushis and then messed up the second round? Raw fish makes my mom sick, and she ate RAW fish. 15% is still pretty generous in my opinion. The 1 star comes from when we left and I walked passed our waitress and I said "Thank you, have a goodnight", and she gave me a dirty look. Really? Because I took away $2 from you for almost making my mom sick when I told you she does NOT eat raw fish from when we sat down? This review wouldn't have existed if she had not given me that dirty look. I also work in service so I DO understand customer service. I get it, you might have forgotten that your customer at "Table XYZ" cannot eat raw fish, but to give me a dirty look when I said bye politely? That was unnecessary. Its now crossed off as one of my favorite sushi restaurants and I probably most likely won't come back here again.

Yelp
Went here last night for the first time. Great place and good service. Get the white dragon! Only wish the serving size for the rolls was bigger.

Yelp
Not only is Coast the best sushi in Chicago, it also has the best staff in Chicago. If I lived closer to Coast I would probably come every night just to hang with Juan, Ming, and Derrick. Let's not forget about the fact that Coast is BYOB, extremely well priced, and has the freshest fish in the city. My go-to apps are the Wasabi Shumai and the Hamachi Carpaccio. The shumai aren't too spicy and come with a refreshing cucumber situation. Hamachi Carpaccio is your classic yellowtail jalapeno sashimi that a lot of sushi restaurants have, but Coast is one of the best I've had! As far as rolls go, you can never go wrong with the special rolls. This summer they had a Natsu roll which was super fresh salmon and tuna. At Halloween they have a Spooky roll and I don't remember exactly what it entails but I highly recommend. Some other favorites that aren't seasonal are the Tuna On Top, Crunchy Spicy Tuna, and Salmon Avocado roll. Pro tip - if you're looking for nigiri pieces, the Toro come in on Thursdays/Fridays/Saturdays and goes fast. Order that first if you're a Toro fan. But don't worry, if they're out the fatty salmon belly is a delicious alternative.
