Inside the landmark Athenaeum, this latte-driven staple blends craft and heritage—think pistachio or butterscotch syrups and serious baking. Frequently spotlighted by Indianapolis Monthly and noted for expanding into food and cocktails without losing its coffee core.

Really cool place! So much history and beautiful architecture. It’s connected to the Rathskeller! Its big and has lots of space to do whatever. Plenty of seats. The croissant and biscuit were delicious. There was other food available! It was busy but the workers got things out fast!

Allan

Google
Just an average coffee place in a cool building. Definitely 5 stars for atmosphere. The tea was decent and the breakfast sandwich was alright, just kind of over-priced. I think after tax and tip it was $21.

Google
Been here a couple of times and have really enjoyed the drinks I've gotten. They have in house baked goods that smell amazing and they sometimes have native bread cookies which are gluten free. Wish I could try their chocolate chip cookies, they look really yummy. They even have lunch options. I really like their chocolate Latte. The space is nice, cozy, with a great location.

Google
This spot works well as a casual workspace for quick meetings. The atmosphere is welcoming, with cozy corners ideal for focused work. While slightly pricier than average, the quality of the food justifies the cost. My standout favorite was the butterscotch latte—a perfect balance of sweet and salty, with just the right amount of sweetness. For breakfast, the bacon breakfast sandwich is worth trying. Though the biscuit base isn’t the best, the bacon is crispy and flavorful. The egg soufflé stole the show: impossibly fluffy and moist, it’s a must-try

Google
I'll be honest I have been skeptical to try Coat Check since the atmosphere is not my favorite. Cortado was okay. Tried a washed Peruvian drip today and it was actually pretty tasty. Good people. I probably wouldn't come again because it's not my favorite atmosphere, but they have a unique selection.

Google
Amazing customer service and coffee presentation. The pistachio latte half sweet was delicious and the blueberry corn muffin was yum! Clean and earthy atmosphere.

Google
Great coffee and pastries! We stopped in a few minutes before closing and while the coffee, food, and location were great the staff certainly reminded us that they were closing soon… cool German heritage information on Indianapolis and would recommend people check this place out!

Julia Nguyen

Google
I’ve tried golden milk lattes at just about every coffee shop that serves them, and this one is hands down the best. The spice blend is perfectly balanced with just the right kick, like a cup of delicious medicine. Their Chai latte is also amazing.

Yelp
It was my first time here and I got an iced lavender latte, it was amazing! Super refreshing and great quality.

Yelp
I'm absolutely obsessed with Coat Check Coffee after visiting this Sunday morning! I ordered a Butterscotch Latte--perfectly balanced and topped with a toasted orange peel that smelled incredible. My group tried a matcha latte and a chocolate latte, and both were described as refreshing and delicious. Of course, we couldn't skip the bakery case--a chocolate croissant was a must. Not only was it one of the prettiest croissants I've ever seen, but it was also flaky, rich, and so satisfying. The service was quick and friendly, and the atmosphere was lively and inviting. Since it's located within the Rathskeller Biergarten, you also get to take in a bit of German history and tradition while you're there. Upstairs, there's even a small (but free) art exhibit worth checking out. Overall, it's the perfect coffee stop while exploring Indianapolis!

Yelp
Loved coat Check coffee when we were in Indianapolis! We tried a few coffee shops during our stay, but all agreed that Coat Check was our favorite. Located in a historical building within walking distance of Mass Ave, Gainsbridge, and the circle. It was a convenient stop before our destination. Once inside, you're greeted with friendly staff and a good amount of space to work, chill, or chat. The breakfast sandwiches were a huge hit with the group. In addition, the latte's were both unique and strong. It had a good balance espresso to milk ratio. The matcha comes unsweetened, but can be sweetened to your desire. If I'm back in indy, it'll definitely be our first place to grab coffee in the morning.

Yelp
We stopped into Coat Check before leaving town, and I'm so glad to say we ended on a good note. I ordered an iced chocolate latté and a quiche, and both were phenomenal. I felt they were a little on the pricey side initially, but the quality was balanced with the pricing. The maldon salt in the chocolate latté was the perfect blend of sweet and salty, and the quiche was fresh, buttery, and crumbly. Others in our group ordered a latté and a biscuit sandwich, and they were also happy with their choices. One thing to note-- the seating at Coat Check is a bit unconventional, so take this into consideration if going with a larger party. Our group had 6 people, and it was difficult to find space where we could sit together.

Yelp
Adoreee this spot. Coat check has so much space and a great layout. Historical feels, and great windows, a very esthetic spot to look out at. Docking one star, affordability wise be ready to drop 10 dollars on a latte, and 15 on a sandwhich... doesn't mean I didn't love every sip and bite!

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee with my daughter. She ordered the butterscotch iced latte and I ordered the lavender iced latte...both were delicious choices. She had a craving for a sweet treat so she got the orange cinnamon roll. It was delightful and very citrusy! Definitely a pleasant treat, almost like an exuberant citrus surprise for your tastebuds. Hats off to the baker for making this! The staff was friendly and very sufficient as it was a busy time. Definitely will be back. On the plus side, we enjoyed the hallway with the history lessons on the walls...lots of fun facts and stories about our state and its surroundings.

Yelp
This coffee shop is in a beautiful building within walking distance of Mass Ave, Gainbridge, the circle, and other downtown spots. The vegan cake was delicious--I could've eaten the entire cake. And their vegan breakfast sandwich is the reason I keep going back. My mouth is literally watering thinking about my meal there. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
5 stars!!!! Great customer service, it's a real vibe! Very cool building and the matcha was crazy! The biscuit sandwich, yum!!!! Will be back!
google avatar

Rick D.

Yelp
I review coffee shops all around the USA, while the coffee and Matcha here are delicious, they are $8 for arguably the smallest cup they could possible give you. It's gotta be a 10 oz cup, if it's 12, it's half ice. The atmosphere is comfortable, and people are enjoying it. There is a few pastries and cookies, but it's insanely expensive, very tasty and easy to get sad after 5 sips and it's gone. I will not return
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a few times and just can't get enough of the bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. The ambience is good and a nice space to work. The coffe is strong and service is friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee and the vibes at Coat Check are the best. So good, we went here twice while visiting Indianapolis! The Lavender Latte is INCREDIBLE. The description says "almond, rosemary, orange blossom" and that made me a little leery to order it but wowowow -- it is SO good. How can a latte have the coffee taste but also be refreshing and not be weird? Not sure but please go try one. My friends were obsessed with the cardamom bun -- so much so, they got one each day of our conference. If I'm back in Indy, I will definitely be back at Coat Check because I want to try their cocktails!! And their other food items!

Yelp
I've had this place on my list for so long and I finally got to try it! I was expecting just a cute little nook of a coffee shop (maybe from the name) but it was a whole thing. We stopped in on a Sunday and it was packed and we snagged the last remaining seat. I had the ginger latte and my brother tried the lavender latte. Both were delicious and so beautiful. The only complaint we had was that there wasn't a menu overhead to browse while we were waiting in line, just laminated copies on the counter.
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
The biscuit sandwich is crazy good. Homemade biscuit, a fluffy egg and huge! A must get.
google avatar

Kristie E.

Yelp
The place is in a gorgeous old building with a theater on the second floor. Take a walk in to look at the art exhibitions they are amazing! The sea salt chocolate chip cookie was delicious, wonderful and gooey. I recommend the latte if you like a lot of creamer, because they only have whole milk creamer. No other creamers like 1/2&1/2, oatmilk, etc. The service was fast and efficient.
google avatar

Yelp
Unique, beautiful, historic building serving coffees, tea, breakfast sandwiches, cookies and assorted pastries- I had a colossal bacon egg sandwich with the most flaky buttery biscuit - so good! Tons of historic pictures to peruse, funky and fun areas to read, or places to hunker down and get work done. Coolest cafe in the area!
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
We have stopped here now a few times, usually when driving some long distances and we happen to be driving through Indianapolis. But we usually always make a point of stopping here for that great cafe vibes. The food and drink have always been delicious (though this last time, the golden latte was probably a tad too sweet). We got a panini/sandwich this last time as well which was delicious. Their regular lattes/flat whites are always on point. The place itself is also very interesting. It's located in a historic church and there is a ton of cool stuff to look at and German history and its relationship with the city. The service is always quick and professional. Feel assured that if you stop here, you are getting a great drink and some great historical information as well!
google avatar

Shayla W.

Yelp
Their coffee is always fresh and the pastries are always amazing. I only gave it 4 stars because I think they could offer less "fancy" coffees too, but I am nitpicking. I enjoy taking my meetings there. It can be a bit loud, but that makes sense considering the space.
google avatar

Tom I.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite place to get coffee. It can get crowded at times, so seating can be a challenge. Sometimes we have to sit on the couches, instead of at a table. The upstairs is great, but it isn't always open. Their coffee is great. Their chocolate latte is amazing, but the drip coffee, espresso, and cappuccinos are all good too.
google avatar

Sadiya A.

Yelp
The butterscotch latte (hot) was so good; I almost wanted to get a second one but iced! I also ordered the brown butter cinnamon roll with orange cream cheese icing and that was delicious even though I'm not a fan of the orange flavor. Came in on Sunday late morning and the place was packed and it was hard finding a place to sit other than the benches which wasn't the most comfortable; we did end up finding a spot with the lounge chairs.
google avatar

Beccy K.

Yelp
This is a unique coffee shop on the first floor of the Atheneum! It is surrounded by an extensive German display of history and steins. There is plenty of seating and standing room. The atmosphere was mixed. Could have been more positive. Maybe some fun shoutouts from the staff? Our cashier was alright but the barista making the coffee barked when I asked a question. The coffee foam was pretty and the muffin was sooooo good!! I would have liked stronger coffee but I'd still probably go back for everything else. :)
google avatar

Albert M.

Yelp
Looking to fill my tank and this place is near. It is a theater coat check coffee shop, old, dark, mysterious. Very quiet with a few people on their laptops. I ordered an oat milk latte it looked beautiful, tasted amazing!
google avatar

Lauryn S.

Yelp
This is the perfect place to camp out and get work done! There's tons of seating on multiple floors and I noticed a fair amount of outlets to charge devices. I personally work better in bright, well-lit cafes so if you're not a fan of dimmer lighting, I recommend grabbing a window seat to get some natural light. Service was not that memorable. The barista seemed a tad bit aloof, but she made me a great drink filled to the brim! The iced butterscotch latte with oat milk was VERY good. I was worried about it being too sweet, but I was still able to really taste the espresso which was perfect. Not artificial tasting at all. I also got a hint of the orange peel at the end of the drink which was a nice surprise. It kills me to spend $8 on a latte, but since this was my first time I decided to treat myself. If you don't order a specialty latte, the other drinks are reasonably priced!
google avatar

Yelp
Keep coming back for the bacon, egg & cheese biscuit -- it's that good! Cozy vibe, strong coffee, and friendly service make it a great spot to work

Yelp
In the belly of the Athenaeum, old and grand, Where whispers cling to beams and dust to hand, A door swings wide, and time folds in-- The world steps back, the brew begins. Once a nook for coats and chatter, Now it hums with something subtler, A clink of cup, the hiss of steam, A place where thought and scent convene. The cortado comes--golden-brown grace, Cradled warm in porcelain lace. Bitter boldness, silk and smoke, A drink, a spell, a whispered joke. Croissants flake like aging scrolls, Each layer telling tales of souls Who came and lingered, sat and stayed, Beneath these beams, in light and shade. Outside, the city forgets to wait, Inside, time slows, then meditates. You do not merely sip or chew-- You listen. You remember. You renew. So come, dear wanderer, take your seat. Let warmth rise up through hands and feet. You're not just drinking coffee here-- It's steeped in story and atmosphere.

Yelp
I walked a mile to try this place and it did not disappoint!! The Lavender Latte with oat milk was fantastic...not too sweet, not too bitter! And so beautiful!! The vegan breakfast sandwich was also really yummy...i got the jalapeno jelly on the side in case it was too spicy, which it was, for me. I traded for the apple butter and dipped biscuit pieces and sandwich in it...so good!! My only complaint is that they don't have vegan sausage gravy currently, which they said is because they're working on a new recipe...i could give them one, it's not that hard;), but i hope they have it back in the menu soon!!

Yelp
Wonderful addition to a timeless building in town. Great pastries and even better coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Friend: Are you going to do your weird thing where you leave a Yelp review? Me: Oh yeah, this place is an easy 5 stars. Cozy, great drip coffee, & a delicious breakfast sandwich. The staff was friendly and the building had a great old timey, theatre vibe.

Yelp
This coffee shop is a cute little hole in the wall. I would never have expected a coffee shop to be apart of ymca. The space is very unique and allows you to study, get work done, a place for interviews or to catch up with your bestie! I absolutely love their Iced Butterscotch Latte. It has a hint of orange with just a unique flavor profile. I was skeptical at first with the orange flavor but it's not overpowering at all it added a sweet touch that balances the flavors well. The Chocolate Latte is an elevated version of a chocolate milk with a shot of espresso for those who don't love coffee as much as you can't taste the coffee at all. This is my go to coffee shop on my way to run errands or in the morning before starting my day! I highly recommend this coffee shop for all my coffee lovers out there!
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
I'm not a coffee expert but I can confirm that they have coffee. The location and interior are what make this space so special. Helpful baristas usher you into an historic space flooded with natural light and new artwork.
google avatar

Carli M.

Yelp
I just love this place! It is my favorite coffee shop downtown Indianapolis. The staff members are always very kind and the ambiance is calm and inviting. Definitely a great place to work or catch up with a friend over a good cup of coffee. The butterscotch latte is to die for. It is my favorite latte I have probably ever had. Amazing flavor and sweet but not too sweet! Just perfect. Will always stop by Coat Check whenever I am near!
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
Quaint coffee shop downtown! The bacon breakfast sandwich was delicious and satisfying, while the iced lavender latte was delightful and refreshing. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxed and calming, providing private areas where my colleague and I could have our meeting.
google avatar

Shelbi G.

Yelp
Great place to warm up in the cold month - or really any time of year. I love the menu selection and asking the staff for their recommendations as well. It's also a good space to work from or to meet up with friends.
google avatar

Emmy M.

Yelp
A wonderful Sunday morning spent with an excellent cup of coffee. The guy next to me sleeping and aggressively snoring was inconvenient but that's life I guess. Not the vibe I was going for but I still really enjoyed my cuppa.

zoie z.

Yelp
i ordered the most amazing pistachio latte here. perfectly sweet with the most pleasant hint of lemon zest that literally reverberated consistently throughout the entire drink. im not sure how you guys did that but i am shocked with how good it was. this may have been the best espresso drink ive ever had.
google avatar

Lori C.

Yelp
Great lattes and pastries in a classic environment. Enjoyed our butterscotch latte and chai tea from comfortable couches. A pretty place! A bit pricey, but a nice treat.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
The stairs is nice and the place is open but the butterscotch latte was just ok and the service was unfriendly. The old German theater would be nice to catch a show. The parlor I stopped at after was way better.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
The environment is very chill. Great place to work or get away from office / home. All of the food is made with quality and always tastes good. I would love if they had almond milk as an alternative.
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
My partner and I frequent Coat Check several times a week. We love to stop by before working out at the YMCA. The staff is always very welcoming and goes above and beyond. Their pastries are some of the best you'll find in the Indianapolis area. Highly recommend their ginger and butterscotch lattes. Also love their almond croissant and biscuits!
google avatar

Deseri T.

Yelp
Coat Check Coffee I happened to stumble upon on a quick Yelp search and I'm so glad I did. I was in Indianapolis for less than 24 hours and I went twice! Staff was super friendly, it's a super chill vibe inside. I highly recommend the matcha latte and the cold brew. The cold brew was super strong kept me going all day for my event! Whenever I'm back in Indy I'll stop by again.

Charis D.

Yelp
Coat check coffee serves some great espresso! I love their pistachio latte with oat milk, although I prefer it a little less sweet than the default. They are quite pricey, I paid $8 for my latte, so it's definitely an occasional treat rather than an everyday go-to. But overall I think the quality reflects the price. It's clear they've put a lot of thought into their menu and the flavors are fantastic. Their lattes are truly a luxurious experience. The environment is great for working/studying. I sat for three hours and got a lot done!
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
Cool little coffee shop in the foyer of Athenaeum. Lots of spaces to get work done or just hang out. Coffee was great and the service was excellent. Lacks the ambiance of a place like Chalet (RIP) or Parlor but still a nice spot to stop for a latte. Maybe a side note, but do all of the coffee shops in town have the same menu? I thought the pistachio latte at Chalet was so cool, then I saw it at provider, and it's here at Coat check. What's up with that?
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
Is there a 10 out of 10 option? Because there should be for Coat Check Coffee. I've been wanting to stop by this location for a while and I'm so glad that I did. And I will absolutely be back. I LOVED the esthetic of the place. The vibe is so chill, it's great to go study if you are in school or if you want to just hang out at a really good coffee shop. This is for you. I had the butterscotch latte, and then another one. I also got the delicious bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. It had a little sweetness to it as well and it was so good! There is plenty of parking around the building near by if you want to park close. I also have to mention the fact that the workers were absolutely splendid! I wish I caught the gentleman's name but he was fantastic!
google avatar

Kerry K.

Yelp
First time here! Met a friend for coffee in the AM. It was sort of busy, but the service was quick and efficient. We sat down and were able to chat about all the life things. Very cute place. It is street parking, but that's okay! There was plenty of space to work with plugs and comfortable seating. Coffee & food was good.
google avatar

Mallory B.

Yelp
My husband and I both got flat whites and they were perfect. The atmosphere is very cute, it's a theatre. There are seats upstairs as well. Ordered and got our coffee very quickly.
google avatar

Isabel G.

Yelp
Went specifically to try the matcha latte w/ ginger and ended up trying the vegan breakfast too. Matcha latte was flavorful, however was not ready for the ginger to be that strong! Personally did not favor the combination. The vegan breakfast was so good. The biscuit tasted buttery, I could taste the jalapeño jelly which provided the perfect spice, & the sausage was the best! Overall the v breakfast was a winner. The place itself has a chic look, and great for studying. Service was fast.
google avatar

Georgia Reine B.

Yelp
Lavender latte and vanilla latte were 10/10. The house-made flavors are really complex and bring all of the tasting notes that we saw on the menu. Nice atmosphere to take a break or get some work done in the variety of seating options.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
If you love coffee and you love history, then Coat Check Coffee will become one of your favorite coffee shops. This adorable shop is located near Mass ave in the historical Anthenaeum building. The historical architecture of the building is amazing. They even have a special hallway that tells the story of German's who settled in Indianapolis and made some very important contributions to the city. The Latte's were fantastic and the croissant was a special treat to go along with it. I will definitely come back!
google avatar

Sonya D.

Yelp
Coat Check Coffee This is the only coffee shop I don't feel bad about spending $7 on a latte for because it's JUST THAT GOOD. I love the Butterscotch latte. It's so flavorful but not overwhelming. They make it perfect every time. It makes me feel nice and warm inside. It's the perfect place to grab coffee with friends- if you walk up the stairs there are pretty stained glass windows with seating all around. It's so nice and calm in there

Yelp
We stopped by here for breakfast after walking over from AirBnB. The entrance was quite inviting with a staircase leading up to the cafe. The color palette was this old rustic sort of feeling. The actual cafe was very similar to a coat check area; it was an interesting concept to say the least. It was quite packed when we arrived so we had to wait in line for a few minutes before ordering. I wish there was a QR code or something to access the menu or view before we got to the front of the line. There were a few paper handouts at the front of the line so we were able to quickly glance to figure out what we wanted. We went for a croissant, Pistachio Latte, and a Butterscotch Latte. We had a little difficulty trying to find seating and didn't feel comfortable walking up with lattes up the staircase so we found some seating to the side (benches) where we could sit. We had a chance to read up on the history of breweries in Indianapolis especially around the Prohibition Era that was quite interesting. The croissant and lattes were delicious. After finishing, we took some time to walk up the stairs where we found more seating, a bar area, and art pieces. We walked around there and observed all the different items. I definitely recommend everyone checkout Coat Check if they're in Indy!
