"In the mood for a little Latin American fare? Head to this Hyattsville hotspot, where birria tacos made with savory beef stew and pupusas of several varieties steal the show. For plant-based options, get the veggie mix — zucchini, bell peppers, corn, and spinach — in a burrito bowl, quesadillas, or tostadas. Satisfy any sweet tooth with homemade flan, tres leches cake, and fried sweet plantains with crema fresca." - Mekita Rivas, Tim Ebner

Google
Friendly service with great suggestions from our server. Everything we ordered was piping hot and tasty. The nachos were loaded and delicious, and my friend couldn’t stop raving about her birria torta. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Decided to check this place out because of the positive reviews. The food was flavorful and Karen’s service was very welcoming. She provided recommendations to us and was pleasant.

So how do I start to share that I now have found a liking for burrito bowls. From the presentation, packaging and most importantly taste. Very satisfied and happy with my selection for lunch. Would certainly recommend if you’re in the area or simply want good Latin food. The restaurant was very clean, open, several spaces available to sit. The bar looked as if they get a lot of traction. After seeing the menu I can see why. The staff and chef Carlos were extremely nice. I’d 100% return.

Google
Authentic Latin food offered and served by attentive staff. They make sure you get what you ask for even with modifications. A large menu for all the craving. My favorite were the birria tacos, perfect balance of flavour. You would want more. And their aguas frescas also fresh not too sweet or artificial. I definitely recommend you to try it.

Google
I had the chicken pupusas, fried plantains, and agua fresca and EVERYTHING was delicious. I live across the country and can’t wait to visit again!

The Chef Bowl with steak tastes great! Everything goes well together. The service was fast and the location is close to the metro.

Update: have been back many times since. Still the same amazing service over the years and the food remains top notch every time!! LOVE the bar addition. Drinks are refreshing. Stopped by after a girl's day because they were new, close to home and it was easy. The place was decorated adorably and the customer service was off the charts! They suggested their specialties and we quickly had a bit of a spread on our table. The owner came and checked on us during our meal and brought us a couple of desserts, on the house (my friend had never tried tres leches, he wasn't having that and I appreciated it 😊)! I have been back several times since (huge fan of popping in for empanadas after grocery shopping) and am glad they have another spot in the area!

Google
I had a great time at the restaurant! The chicken enchiladas were amazing, although the chicken taco was just okay. The customer service was fantastic. The only downside was that it was a bit pricey - $5 for one taco is a bit steep, but they do offer a deal on three tacos which I can't remember the exact cost of. Overall, I would definitely recommend giving it a try!

Yelp
Besides the fact that it's really inviting and cute inside. Our server was also friendly and attentive. All I got was some nachos and it filled me up!! The nachos are some of the best nachos I've had. They were super delicious and flavorful. They had a bar as well; so I'll likely be back for drinks. Although I didn't try anything else, all the food I saw coming out for others looked really tasty.

Yelp
I've lived in Hyattsville for about 4 -5 years and somehow had never been to Cocineros. Have only heard great things and glad we finally got the chance to stop by. I'll skip the pleasantries and say the food was amazing! Table side chips and salsa tasted fresh and I'm pretty sure are house made. For entrees ordered Steak and chicken tacos, with birria enchiladas and a side of plantain. Favorite item was either steak taco or enchiladas. Plantain was crispy, sweet and fried to perfection. Our server was very friendly and greeted/sat us as soon as we walked in. It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night so response time wasn't the best. But I will say considering the employee was in training and one of two servers a great effort was made. Decor is nice lots of florals and vibrant colors. Nice MD crab decal on the wall above the bar. Lively music that kept me engaged throughout the meal. Option to sit and eat inside, at bar, or order to go. Looking forward to returning for happy hour (3-6 mon/fri ) to try drink and some other food items.

Yelp
Very good! I thought the food was tasty and margs were delicious. More fajita options would be great and more things could be on the plate to put on the fajitas (lettuce, sour cream, guac, rice).

Yelp
Food was tasty, service was good, friendly and professional. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
Was peckish from shopping so got two sides: black beans (our friendly server confirmed it was vegetarian) and maduro plantains. The plantains were served with a side of crema, so if you skipped that, be a vegan meal. don't miss the chips and salsa: chips were freshly fried and still warm. crisp, not so thin you couldn't pick up a decent amount of salsa, but not so thick to be hard tack. the salsas were great, flavorful, balanced, good mix of spicy and mild. margarita was good, appreciated it not being too big so we could get back to more shopping after. would go back to try more things - others reported their food was good.

Domonique G.

Yelp
My friends love Cocineros and invited me for happy hour. We had chips and salsa along with queso also the wings for appetizers. Enchiladas are one of my favorite meals. I ordered the birria enchiladas. The flavor of the salsa verde was nice but the birria was tough and dry. Beans and rice were good. Jennifer was our waitress. She was very sweet and pleasant. I would visit Cocineros again but I would have to try another dish.

Bessy G.

Yelp
Pros: Food is tasty. From the bowls to the pupusas, everything tastes good and I really appreciate the "vegetarian options. Cons: inconsistency in to-go orders. There have been a couple of times I've ordered empanadas and pupusas, yet the accompanying sauces were missing from the order. Because I was already home, it was inconvenient to drive back. Sauces are good! I also don't know if the empanadas are meant to be different sizes. I ordered one of each: vegetarian, chicken and beef. The vegetarian was the smallest. Not sure I would price 3 of those for $15. Tip: the spinach empanada also has corn and mushrooms, which are not disclosed in the menu.

Iris M.

Yelp
This is definitely a go to restaurant for an experience that you probably would not have anticipated, but definitely need! We tried a little bit of everything, but it really blew me away was the calamari which is going to be an exceptional pic for your taste buds and the octopus quesadilla something I never would've thought to order but definitely will order again! The restaurant was clean and the staff was so warm and inviting. They make sure to make great recommendations and did not guide me wrong.

Grace K.

Yelp
Food delicious! Very good nachos, crispy calamari is tender and delicious, this is my favorite. The tostada is also my favorite, the plantains were cooked perfectly. We celebrated my daughter's birthday here and it was fun. The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was pleasant and music made us feel like dancing. It was a fun evening. I would definitely return to try their other dishes.

Yelp
Location now has a mini bar with Happy Hour!! Non & Alcoholic drinks are available - including 3 different types of tacos. Met Carlos, who is part owner and he was such a joy I noticed they also clean and wipe down menus after patron use I had a virgin frozen strawberry daiquiri. It was refreshing! My friend had a pina coloada on the rocks, said it was good We didn't eat, but received the table chips with 2 sauces

Johanna G.

Yelp
This is a go to stop for me when I'm in the neighborhood. I've had tried the pupusas, the tacos, the salmon, the corn, and more and everything is delicious. The service is always great and quick. I usually order take out, but have eaten there once. It's clean and plenty of space to sit.

Chuck C.

Yelp
I had a late lunch and ordered the churrasco (skirt steak.) What I got was a riot of delicious flavors. The steak was topped with sautéed onions and parsley with a grilled Serrano. The last is not for the faint of heart. The sides included rice, pico de gallo and a South American version of mixed vegetables with a Peruvian green sauce in the middle. Freshly fried tortillas with cilantro chutney came separately. Did I say that it was all flavorful? The only thing I didn't like was the saltiness of the rice. While rice needs salt, it should never be noticeable especially to the extent of competing for dominance. This is why I had to dock a star. I should mention that my meal was gluten-free.

Susan C.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. We had the guacamole, hibiscus agua fresca assorted pupusas and assorted tacos. Pupusas were delicious: tender and stuffed full of each filling. Guacamole was excellent with what seemed to be two homemade salsas. Hibiscus agua fresca was very good. Tacos (all on corn tortillas) were mostly excellent: the fish and al pastor were fantastic. The chicken taco was fine, but not as great as everything else. Service was friendly and efficient. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Cocineros is one of my favorite spots! It's affordable, delicious flavors, and great service! Perfect for large groups, family dinners, or a casual lunch/dinner.

Alexis T.

Yelp
I haven't had enough of the food to fully rate that aspect of the restaurant in depth. I had the birrira and shrimp tacos. I've had more flavorful birrira and it didn't come with any dipping sauces. They were well enough but no extras, just meat with very little onion; unless it was a bad day. The shrimp tacos were tasty. The service was wonderful with attentive and helpful staff. A few items looked good like the empanadas and chaloupa.

Yelp
We have been in search of a New Mexican restaurant in our new neighborhood and decided to order Cocineros for takeout. We ordered via the online site on a Sunday evening and the order was ready in about 15 minutes. We got our usual entrees a Chicken Chimichanga for my partner and enchiladas verde for me. We also ordered a side of chips and guacamole to share. When we picked it up, I was very frustrated that our salsa containers popped open and spilled all over the place. When I went inside to ask for a new bag and new sauces they gave us smaller portions. My partners chimichanga was huge (it almost took up the whole box. He loved it and let me try a bite while I didn't care for the rice and beans being inside it had the perfect crispy tortilla. The enchiladas were lackluster, there wasn't enough green sauce or cheese and the shredded chicken was dry. I also didn't get the usual accompaniments of pico de gallo and sour cream. The guacamole was delightful and had a little spice to it. My partner really liked this spot so we may try it again but I'll have to keep looking for a go-to place for my enchiladas.

Gaby R.

Yelp
We love the empanadas delicious staff very friendly and nice great service nice place we will go back for sure we highly recommend.

Ayret C.

Yelp
The best margarita there is! Great prices, excellent happy hour weekdays 3-6. Staff is friendly and food is always amazing.

Ingrid N.

Yelp
Had some food empanadas and guacamole while working Pride in the Plaza, had to see immediately where this delight originated. Amazing! I will come to restaurant for the full menu and drinks soon. Thx for supporting Pride!

Yesenia O.

Yelp
We saw this while driving and decided to take a chance and try it out. Wow, am I glad we did! As a Puerto Rican I was so happy to see tostones on the menu. Sure they are super easy to make (and I make them at home all the time), but somehow tostones that I don't have to make are always funner to eat. I really enjoyed the guacamole that accompanied them and even dipped into the salsa verde (green) that came with the chips. The sangria was not too sweet and was refreshing. The torta (sandwich) cubana was huge and absolutely delicious! I highly recommend the birria tacos! The consume was wonderful, the meat was juicy and tender, and the cheese pull was awesome! This is a place we will definitely visit again!

Yelp
I apologize for not having any pictures because the following words you're about to read won't do this place any justice. After seeing a video on Instagram raving about the food and customer service at Cocineros, I had to check it out for myself. My best friend and I, who are both foodies, made our way to the restaurant on a Tuesday evening. This place exceeded our expectations. For starters, the ambiance of this place great. It was spacious enough where I wouldn't feel anxious that people would be sitting on top of me but quaint enough that our server was able to give us great service. Now for the food! I started off with a Jamaica Agua Fresca. For $4, I received a large glass of a perfectly sweetened Agua Fresca. The appetizers consisted of homemade guacamole, a rojo salsa, and a verde salsa. I knew the rest of my food was going to be a hit based off of the guacamole and salsas. The remaining appetizers were the crazy taco and the empanadas (all 4 flavors). Spectacular! My entree was the largest chimichanga I ever ordered. I didn't even finish my entree because I was stuffed from the appetizers. The food was fresh and made to order and our server was so gracious. I'm upset that I haven't experienced this place sooner but happy to know that it will be one of my go to restaurants moving forward.

Kerlin M.

Yelp
I was surprised when I came on a Saturday to see the place completely empty. You order at the front and find a place to sit. They bring the food out. It honestly is a little overpriced, it's basically fast food Latin food. Everyone is super nice and attentive. The place inside is nice and clean, love the art! Would I go back? Probably not, nothing was wow.

Michelle S.

Yelp
This is my go to hidden gem! Seriously! A mix of fast casual and sit down, you order at the counter sometimes and sometimes they bring you a menu when you're seated. Their birria always hits and I'm still on the hunt for melty birria like Cocineros'. I like going back and forth between the pulpo burrito bowl and pulpo tacos, but my boyfriend never steers away from birria. They play Latin music that could've been taken from my dad's playlist but it's never too loud. I wish I had one of these near my job.

Yelp
WOW! Came here on a last minute whim and this spot was a pleasant surprise! Everything we tried was so dang good, this was truly left us satisfied to the fullest. Got empanadas (chicken, beef, cheese) and the Chef Bowl with steak. With our order they gave us complimentary chips and two sauces - red salsa and a green sauce, which is nice and generous nowadays when dining in. Empanadas definitely taste homemade, the pastries were nice and flaky and they did not skimp on the filling. I wanted a little bit of everything so the Chef's Bowl hit! The steak was super tender and seasoned well and the rice was very tasty (I'm a rice person). My husband loved their beans too. The eatery is clean, spacious, and there are pads for easy ordering. For what you get, pricing is great. Staff was friendly too, we got there towards closing and they did not rush us out while we eating, even after their closing time. Yeah, after writing this review and remembering how good the food is, I'm definitely going back to pick up an order this weekend! Highly recommend to all to try this place out!

Keisha H.

Yelp
I've had my husband pickup takeout from cocineros but now it was time for me to finally dine in and get the full experience! On this occasion I dined in with a friend for lunch. I've had the pupusas multiple times and on this occasion I ordered some to go, because I like them that much. I got one pork, one beans, and a chicken/ jalapeño pupusa (it's an order of three). The meal I ate there was the chef bowl. This was my first time ordering this. Maybe I'm wrong for assuming this, but I assumed it would actually come in a bowl lol. To my surprise, it did not come in a bowl. Despite the presentation discrepancy, it was good. I ate it like nachos so it tasted just fine to me lol. My friend got the fajita tacos which she said she enjoyed as well. They also gave us chips and salsa before our food came out so that was nice too. The service was nice and efficient. Cocineros has quality food and good service. I'll continue to be a regular patron for both dine in and takeout. Cheers!

Mat G.

Yelp
Think of Cocineros as Taqueria Habanero's more modern and adventurous cousin! Their sauces and style reflect more of Central American cuisine. As someone who loves both restaurants, I can can interchangeably eat at either restaurant as I appreciate the differences. Their polo enchiladas verde are truly delicious and I paired with a pork and vegetarian pupusas. This is the ONLY place that I like their pupusas. Theirs are moist, flavorful, and have some real substance! Cocineros staff are really wonderful and welcoming! They treated my party of five people today very well. I am already thinking of what I would like to order next time

Andre B.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised, goodnwas fresh well.seasoned and tadted exceptionally well. Beef tacos and rice and pinto beans were pretty good. Would have liked a tad bit mor seasoning innthe beans, but will definitely.return when Im at PG Plaza.

Nunez S.

Yelp
Good food, good staff we sat down in the bar service was wonderful mario our bartender gave us a good service talking about the restaurant and what do they do we had some Pinas colada and they were wonderful as well as food torta Cubana was big and tasty and we order enchiladas home made tortilla made it more at home will come back soon again

Shawn G.

Yelp
Quality food and service authentic Latin Cuisine. And the margarita is awesome and on the happy hour menu. Will come back!!

Kendra M.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! We had chicken and jalapeño pupusas, pork pupusas, and birria tacos. This is the best birria I've had in the area -- definitely dethroned Little Miner Tacos for me.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Right across East West Highway from Prince George's Plaza shopping mall, in the same parking lot with the Giant grocery store, sits a gem of a restaurant that is hidden in plain sight... and it's called Cocineros (Cooks, in Spanish). Hidden because, until, some friends brought us some take-out from this place, it seemed invisible to me, set as it is in a little strip mall and bearing a name I didn't recognize. So, having had their outstanding vegan Spinach/Mushroom Empanadas (don't die before you eat one) as takeout, I decided to have a meal in person, and, boy, am I a cheerleader for this place now! Yes, the atmo is cafeteria-like... Yes, the coffee is pre-sweetened and spiced with cinnamon (might be a plus for some!)... Yes, they serve their gorgeous salads without salad dressing... but LOOK AT THIS FAJITA PLATTER! I ate for three days from this mound-o-meat and still couldn't finish it! Not only that, but the Sautéed Vegetables side dish will knock your socks off: fresh spinach, zucchini, corn straight off of the cob, and lots of other lovely things... and they do a mean Mexican Street Corn as well. This pan-Latinx eatery is way higher quality than its fast-food veneer suggests. They could charge twice as much for their food in a white-tablecloth restaurant, and no one would bat an eye! So, next time you're shopping at Giant and feel a little peckish, pop in for an Empanada. You'll be glad you did! https://www.cocinerosmd.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=wix_google_business_profile&utm_campaign=7121268525619850835

Yelp
el restaurant cocineros es lo mejor de lo mejor en hyattsville, exiqusita comida, un lugar limpio y agradable y buena atencion, algunas veces por el mismo dueño. este restauran es el unico que yo sepa que trabaja ayudando la comunidad. yo lo recomiendo. cocineros restaurant is the best of the best in hyattsville, exquisite food, a clean and pleasant place and good service, sometimes by the same owner. this restaurant is the only one that i know of that works to help the community. i recommend it.

Luis S.

Yelp
I don't remember exactly how many times we've had it in the past month, but since the first visit, my wife and I practically became regulars! Service is great every single time, whether dining in or taking out. The restaurant itself is consistently clean so we've enjoyed dining in in a few times. Most importantly, the food is so tasty and fresh! The pictures here don't do it justice. The go-to has been their Chef Bowls, and I've had both their chicken and steak ones. Everything they include in the platter satisfies my palate in different ways, especially the protein itself, the rice, the beans, and the dollop of fresh guac. I've also tried one of their pupusas, some of their tacos, their agua fresca de Jamaica, and their tres leches cake. ALL delicious! Definitely grateful we found this place, and already looking forward to the next visit.

Khoi N.

Yelp
I really wanted to enjoy our experience here, but the food overall is making this place less recommendable. I read the recent reviews and some of them stated food with lack of flavor or issues with carry out. My friend and I ordered the elote, birria tacos, pupusas and empanadas. Elote was cold and you could tell by the butter and cheese not melted. The pupusas and empanadas were good, but considering the price probably not worth it. The birria tacos were really thin. The consume broth lacked flavor and there was a lil cup of it. I really like their big sister restaurant Taqueria Habanero for their authentic flavors and quality of food. With the portion size and flavors, I can't justify the price here.

Derek L.

Yelp
Great lunch at Cocineros. Loved the tacos and empanadas. Service was great too. Glad we found you.

Ara C.

Yelp
I've been here twice, everything never fails it's so good. Especially the passion fruit / Jamaica mojito my favv. I recommend you come and check this place out you won't regret it.

Nicole S.

Yelp
The empanadas were delicious I got beef, chicken and spinach one, please be advised the spinach one comes with mushrooms I didn't know this at the time of ordering (but it was sooo delicious). Also got plátanos con crema and an agua de jamaica (yum) Only complaint is that the empanadas are a bit small for how much they are charging

Rita R.

Yelp
Omg!! The food here was so good we literally went here twice in one night! I was introduced to Cocineros by my family in the area, this is the area I grew up in and soo much has changed but one thing I am happy about is the flourish of new restaurants to try! If you're ever in the DC/MD area stop in for the birria tacos, sorry no photos this time but I'll try to remember when I go back! I really over indulged!! I honestly have to find a birria taco place here in RVA all suggestions are welcomed, now I'm abducted!!

Jim B.

Yelp
Cocineros is now open! Sister restaurant to Taqueria Habanero and Comedor y Pupuseria San Alejo. We'd been to TH in College Park before and loved it, so we were excited to see this place come into the neighborhood. First off, parking is super easy as it shares a parking lot with Giant. The inside is fun and vibrant. They've got areas to sit for 2-4 people, as well as two larger tables if you come with a large group. The menu has a lot of different options, so if you're are coming with that large group there will definitely be something that appeals to everyone. We decided upon the seafood chef bowl, the carne asada (side of plantains and yuca), then I had to try out the locoro & cheese pupusa, the rice pudding, and the hibiscus drink. Everything was a knock out! The seafood chef's bowl was laid out beautifully with both shrimp and grilled octopus which were both cooked to perfection. The carne asada was perfectly cooked too, just melting as you cut into it. I love a good side of plantains and these made so well. I'd never tried a locoro pupusa before, but I'm a fan. The aromatic flower gives such a unique and tasty flavor to the food. Try it out if you've never had one! Finished off the meal with rice pudding, which was delicious with the cinnamon and raisins but not overly sweet. All washed down with an excellent hibiscus drink - they've got orange juice as well as horchata too - and they're applying to get their liquor license. Excellent food, super friendly staff, great location. Make the trip out here and give them a go!

Kevin B.

Yelp
Los segunda vez y la comida está súper rica el lugar súper limpio y el mesero súper amable

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and I'm glad I did!! Immediately the staff was quick to offer a menu and recommendations. I ordered the Steak, Pastor and Tinga tacos with plantains and for a drink I got the Hibiscus juice. Everything was so delicious! The staff and owner were super friendly and I'll definitely be back.

Ronald P.

Yelp
Don't eat here!!!!! I opened up my box of pupusas to find the salsa and lettuce pushed down onto my food for some reason!!!! They ruined it and refuse to fix it, I would recommend only if you want to be disappointed. Look at this garbage Any real Hispanic community would know to Atleast separate the pupusas and not push down on the food. Trash.

Danielle M.

Yelp
Clean location next to Giant. I've been obsessing over empanadas lately and was in the area. Found Cocineros on Yelp. I ordered chicken and beef empanadas. They both lacked flavor. Neither were crispy and the beef one was popping open. The chicken had more spice but not much. Honestly the green sauce provided had more flavor than the empanada itself. I also ordered their hibiscus tea for $4 + I expected a nice punch but it was bland. I'm pretty disappointed and probably won't be back which is a bummer because I'm always nearby.

Jordan L.

Yelp
Update!! I've been back multiple times, and they have a rewards program!!! The empanadas are great, I didn't like the Hawaiian one though, if you like pineapple go ahead and try. The chicken quesadilla is pretty good, I like that they offer it on a corn tortilla which isn't common. Keep up the great work Cocineros!

Shakeem B.

Yelp
Hands down on of THEEE best latin american restauarants in Maryland. I love the customer service and prompt attention. Food is made to order so it's always hot and fresh. I usually order the fajita tacos which are amazing! I tried the steak quesadilla for the first time and it did not disappoint! If I could eat here every day, I would. Only thing I wish is that more sauce was offered and that there's a cost for sour cream. I have never had a bad experience. Try it, you'll love it!

Nancy H.

Yelp
Food was fresh and delicious! I had tostones and a shrimp quesadilla they were perfect

Anthea L.

Yelp
ive quite literally never had such a good burrito. i got the beef and it was crispy and yet tender and not greasy or oily. it was amazing. if you're out here you have to go cocineros!!! service was super quick and they were so nice! totally recommend. also the tres leches blew my mind im dead on the ground
