The Ultimate Guide to Puget Sound’s Best Cideries | Eater Seattle

"Perched on the Puyallup River on a historic 7-acre farm and founded by brothers Richard and John Cockrell, this estate cidery produces small-batch, handcrafted ciders from its own apples, including traditional cider varieties like American Heirloom, Gravenstein, and Roxbury Russet. The picturesque orchard-centered property offers a teeny taproom serving a dozen cider varieties in flights or pints, with standouts such as pineapple-apple and valley raspberry ciders; Thursday nights bring music and local food trucks. The orchard itself is a highlight, with boughs trained in the espalier style (parallel rows of 2D apple trees), and visitors often recall sipping pineapple-crabapple cider on the deck while chickens run underfoot and Elwood, the resident black lab, moseys about." - Meg van Huygen

Google
Pizza truck was on site, had a delicious ranch based thin crust with goat cheese accompanied by a glass of bone dry cider followed by another seasonal cider. Staff were very helpful and lines were never long. Live music on Friday was a fun addition to the outside seating with plenty of covered seating and table options. Definitely would go back.

I went here to see Slim Wizzy perform for their summer concerts! They allow babies under 18 months, which is great since I have an infant and his dad plays the guitar in the band. Cockrell's always have a different food truck at these events as well and the one that was there did have vegan options, which was great.

Jena. Thank you for the great recommendation on the blonde beer. Was quite good. Also the remember Betty's event was top notch

Google
So happy I found this gem! Wanted to take my good friend to a cider place & it did not disappoint at all. Tried a blackberry and blueberry cider. Both were delicious. Venue has different food trucks on different days. They also have wine and beer. We decided to buy the glasses because we can bring them back and reuse them! They are all about recycling & we love that. The atmosphere is also very inviting. Saw people grabbing games to play at the table too. Looks like they had a nice selection. We will definitely be back!

Google
Love this place. You can take babies up to 18 months, otherwise it’s 21+. The atmosphere is fantastic and the drinks are amazing and very reasonably priced. Check out their social for food trucks and live music!

Google
It's an outdoor venue. Bands play there regularly. They make their own cider there from apple trees they grow on the property. Some covered areas for rain and sun, but if a popular band is playing the covered areas are quickly taken. They have a different food truck come in on a regular basis. There are many regulars attending. I don't go often enough to rate the food. There's no wait staff. Food and beverage items are ordered at the window.

Karen Reynolds

Google
Nice outdoor space. The place itself only serves beverages, but had a food truck on site, as well. The bartender was very welcoming and kind. She made my drink exactly as I requested. The cider is excellent.

Gina Clair

Google
Cockrel has a great atmosphere, great cider and great food trucks. They also have a few beers on tap and a few wines as well. There are rotating food trucks to feed the crowd, check the calendar for the latest one. There is often live music inside the tents in the winter and outside on the stage in the summer. If you are prone to being cold, make sure you bring coats, scarves, hats and gloves as this is a mostly outdoor venue, with fires and heaters.

Yelp
Came here for a wedding on 8/25/24. Beautiful property with plenty of parking. They have a lot of different ciders to choose from. My fav was the blueberry and blackberry. Staff were nice in the tasting room and answered all my questions.

Yelp
After one visit, I'm confident in saying this will be theeee spot of the summer for myself, my boyfriend, and our baby! I discovered Cockrell Cider on Yelp (as one does) and added it to our must try list of kid-friendly spots. Note that kids 18months and YOUNGER are allowed, but not older than that. This place is SO cool. It's literally on a family-farm, they're only open a few hours a few days a week, and they have rotating food trucks on site. The ciders are also pretty good, and that's coming from someone who doesn't favor ciders at all. I loved the raspberry and strawberry rhubarb one. On Thursdays they do live music which is apparently the prime night to come, because it got pretty busy. The space is HUGE though, with covered and uncovered spots to choose from. We visited last week and already plan on returning this week. My boyfriend hasn't stopped talking about it either. Cockrell is the definition of hidden gem. A must visit if you're in the area!

Yelp
Lovely place to visit. I would like to see more information about Elwood on the website. He's a great dog but service dogs could be distracted by him so knowing he's here is important for anyone with a service dog to know before a visit.

Yelp
One of my favorite low key places to entertain guests. Great way to kill time and enjoy hard cider

Yelp
We never come this far south when visiting but decided to check out Cockrell Hard Cider. It's run by two brothers who started it back in 2014. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:30pm). Their tasting room (aka. the Roost) is spacious with plenty of additional seating in the back. They had a TV up playing golf in the background. One of the brothers was there hanging out and chatting with the regulars. There's also a friendly black labrador (Elwood) that roams around. Order at the counter; you can start a tab or settle up right away. They had 8 ciders on tap along with a beer option. They have different food trucks that setup outside (when we were there, it was RJ's BBQ Smokehouse). They no longer offer flights but pours are $5.00 USD (13 oz) and you can sample a few flavours before deciding. Grunts are $9.00 USD and growlers are $17.00 USD. - Elwood blues berry ($5.00 USD) - Blackberry ($5.00 USD) Cozy, friendly vibes and decent ciders at Cockrell. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
So much fun! Cannot wait to go back . Good ambience, drinks, must try this venue if you are in the area

Jenna L.

Yelp
Love this place! The music is always amazing when they have someone, their staff is always so friendly and will tell you about their ciders which I have yet to have a bad one. They sell growlers of their ciders which we've taken home a few times to enjoy. Will definitely be back

Diana G.

Yelp
Fun outside venue with music on Thursday nights. Food truck always there. Cider, beer and now wine available.

Yelp
What a great place We attended a gathering here and I was amazed at how busy the place was for a windy rainy January Friday. I can't wait to return on a nice summer evening. Tonight's food truck was tijuana Taco...they sold out of most things early and that was unfortunate.... I sampled all the ciders but the one that will be my goto goin forward is the one that is like The original only better. Sorry I don't recall it's name but when you ask for the better original they will know. Lol.

Yelp
I feel like Cockrell's is Puyallup's hidden secret! This place is tucked back in a residential neighborhood on a large piece of property. The cider shack itself is pretty small- they were not seating inside last time I went due to COVID, but this may have changed since then. Cockrells has a TON of outdoor seating, making this the perfect place for a cider on a sunny afternoon! They have a small stage in their backyard area and a bunch of caged chickens. Typically they have a food truck open outside the cider shack, but Cockrells does not serve food themselves. The only other downside is the bathroom situation. Cockrells has a few Honey Buckets just outside the shack in the parking lot. These are ALWAYS super clean- it would just be nice to have another option for hot days and dark nights. Either way- Cockrells is a fun place to spend a sunny summer day!

Yelp
My husband and I came here the weekend before Valentine's Day to start off our early celebration and get a drink before heading to dinner. We live nearby and had never been here before and were pleasantly surprised. It was cold out but they had indoor, outdoor covered and uncovered seating with ample heaters around. The atmosphere was fun and the bartender was extremely nice and helped us pick out ciders. They had a food truck and we decided to share something as an appetizer and it was delicious! There is a stage and the bartender told us they do live music, we will certainly be back!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. We never would have found this place if our dear friend was not playing music here. To add to it we are not cider fans either but thought we would come see our friend. OMG, This place has changed my mind! Their ciders are incredible, great flavors and not super sweet. The summer & strawberry-rhubarb we're my favorites. They get food trucks in the parking lot as they do not serve food. You can grab a cider and walk the property which is so beautiful. Visit with the chickens, goats and the owners dog which will try and convince you to throw the ball for hours. This is a do not miss stop if your in the area!

Yelp
Oh my gosh! When my friend and I got here it was a little bit sketchy... you are literally driving into someone's drive way and parking in an empty field next to their house! BUT once we got there, it was the more adorable place ever! The gazebo was super cute! We went during the summer time and it was a perfect outdoor day! Now, let's talk about their cider... DELICIOUS!!! And super cheap! Very good size glasses! I would definitely recommend this secret gem to everyone

Yelp
fThe world of Cider in the Pacific Northwest continues to expand and Cockrell Hard Cider, founded in 2014 on the outskirts of Puyallup was one of the pioneers. Arriving at this location you are basically driving into someones front yard as the neighborhood is residential. Ample parking abounds. Come into the yurt and you are greeted by friendly staff and bevy of Cockrell Ciders on tap. $5 for a pour of about 12 ounces. Growlers available, as well as a small assortment of bottles and beers. No food on site, but they do offer a rotating selection of local food trucks. Depending on the day and how busy they are, expect the food truck to run out of food. Seating feels as if you are in your backyard nestled up to an orchard. Some covered seating available, adirondack chairs, picnic tables and benches. Small stage for live music, but mostly it is pumped in 60's easy listening rock. All in all a great little place to enjoy the burgeoning world of craft cider.

Yelp
Adorable!! Charming! Delicious! Just a great experience to sit and chill and relax outside. The raspberry cider was refreshing and delicious.

Yelp
I'm not a huge cider fan but going to a place like Cockrell Brewing can definitely turn a corner for me! Actually it isn't so much that I'm not a fan... I usually seek out craft beer breweries. On the occasions that I do get ciders I actually really enjoy them. After doing a Yelp search in the Seattle area I notice that there aren't a lot of cideries out there compared to breweries and wineries which is a bit sad to see. I went to Cockrell this past weekend after an acquaintance highly recommend that I go try them. I was not disappointed in the slightest! The ciderie is located in a residential neighborhood in Puyallup. The best time to go here is on the weekend... some other Yelpers state that their hours aren't too broad but it's totally worth your time to work your schedule around. Upon arriving at Cockrell they have a pretty decent sized parking lot at the owner's residence. You can also see the orchards there which is cool! There is a separate building from the main house that is the tasting room and there are signs to point you in the right direction. The place was pretty busy when I was here which was great to see! I got two ciders here which I thought were fantastic! I got the Devil'n which is a raspberry habanero cider. The idea of habanero being involved may sound a bit intimidating since those are very hot peppers but there is only a slight kick and you get a good pepper feature to the cider which isn't unpleasant at all. I also had the Dusty which was a less sweet cider from their Original and drier. That too was delicious! Very crisp! The building where the tasting room is cool, there is a patio out back and past that there is a nice big yard with picnic tables. You are very close to the orchards and can look at the plants from the yard but the real fun is the chicken yard which is right next to where the customers can go. They are a real hoot to watch and have a great personalities! Very gentle birds! They come running right over to you! My first experience here was great! The tasting room is a lot of fun, the cider is of very good quality and the prices here are very reasonable! I'm SO coming back!

Yelp
Great place to go and hangout outside with social distancing. People are great and more importantly the ciders are excellent. Waiting for them to get T-shirt's back in stock.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the ciders, food trucks, and environment! I will always recommend this place. It's always quick service! Just wish they were open more.

Yelp
Such a great place, from the atmosphere to the food trucks, and especially the ciders, I'd give 10 stars if I could. Had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, and he gave us a little backstory on the place and he was so friendly, warm, and welcoming- I can see why Cockrell gives off these same vibes! I'm so glad they have been able to remain open throughout the pandemic, and highly recommend coming here. I came on a Saturday abut an hour before closing and it wasn't super crowed, my group was able to get a table in the shade right away. I had the blackberry and raspberry ciders and they were both amazing! We didn't grab anything from the food trucks though since we had a dinner reservation elsewhere, but we're definitely doing lunch here next time. They also allow guests to help with apple picking sometimes, so just make sure to follow them on social media to find out when, and to be in the loop on their current cider flavors and what food trucks will be there.

Brianna C.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect when we stopped by but sure glad we did! Amazing cider. Comfortable atmosphere. Kids and dogs running around. Awesome owners that are down to earth, good, family people that are easy to chat with! Food truck was on site that night. The "Frying Dutchman." SO good!! Hubby had the Fish & Chips. I had the Fish Tacos. BOTH were ridiculously good and they have the best tartar sauce!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Liked this spot a lot. The inside is pretty small and cute, there's also quite a bit of outside seating. They had a pretty good variety of ciders. I had a juniper one that was good and I sampled the raspberry which was delicious. They also have to go bottles as well. It can get pretty busy, especially on the weekends. Overall, a good stop, I would recommend it for some tasty ciders.
google avatar

Serena W.

Yelp
Beyond amazing. All of the ciders were the best and tasted so fresh. Definitely recommend coming here and worth the drive. Try the tangerine one if you can.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
I love this place. Make sure to bring food to snack on... it's a fun out of the box spot. The cider is top of the line and gluten free. Kids and dogs are welcome.
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
I attended a wedding reception there and had the time of my life! The grounds are beautiful, the employees VERY helpful, the ciders are tasty (crab-apple is my favorite) and everything was fun! They had corn-hole to play, and a washer toss game, and the local game on multiple tv's if you need to keep up with the score. And the farm dog Elwood is a sweetie that is wagging his tail constantly. A+++
google avatar

Madelyn V.

Yelp
Checked this place out for the first time last night. Such a fun spot! I love the rotation of food trucks
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
Wish I would have shown up earlier to enjoy the location. Arrived 10 minutes before closing. Cider is great! Perfect late spring locale to enjoy the sun and indulge in a dry cider, just saying!

Joy J.

Yelp
I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this place! Every time I come there is something new and delicious to try. Don't let the fact that this is tucked in a neighborhood deter you- there is always plenty of parking. The staff are super swell and the seating area is great In all types of weather! Also- each glass of cider is only $5! A bargain for what you are getting :)
google avatar

Danie M.

Yelp
This lace is great- rows and rows of apples growing while you get to sip on really good cider. It's beautiful and relaxing. Try the pina colada cider - it's crazy good.
google avatar

Daryll B.

Yelp
Very cool and intimate venue. Great selection of ciders. Plenty of outdoor and covered seating with a nice sized fire pit.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan of cider, but this place is pretty cute. The bartender was super sweet and wonderful. We came for a friend's semi-private event. Wish the food options were better!
google avatar

Yelp
Puyallup is so lucky to have this great cider place. Seasonal cider flavors (and always the old favorites), super fun setting and different food trucks each day make this a really unique dining and drinking opportunity.
google avatar

Sonya C.

Yelp
Beautiful location, amazing service, great selection of ciders!! You won't be disappointed by spending an afternoon here!!

Yelp
I have been going to Cockrell's since they opened. Being from Puyallup and going to school with the owner I wanted to support. I have recommended several people go and enjoy the atmosphere, food trucks, and of course the ciders. However, the last time I visited my experience was not expected. I understand they have a no dog policy and I try to respect that when possible. However, I do have a dog that is a support dog (for illness I will not disclose for a few reasons but mostly because it should not matter.) as I walked in (after buying my cider) I was approached by the owned and a very hostel and rude way. Telling me I needed to prove my dog was a service dog and that I should be telling him why I needed this dog. As well as asking other personal questions. I politely explained that I do not need to have papers with me. The more I tried to explain the situation the more aggressive he became. I was not only surprised but disappointed by his manner and approach when it came to dealing with someone with a non-visual disability. The ADA would not approve!
google avatar

Nunya B.

Yelp
Such a cool local place. Lots of business but they still manage to give personal attention and helpful suggestions. My only wish is that they'd have a food truck on site guaranteed. Other than that - great place!
google avatar

Samson W.

Yelp
This place is an unbelievable gem. Rich pours his heart into his craft, and he pours some incredibly good cider. I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
google avatar

Jordin E.

Yelp
This place is incredible. Owner on site to give insight about growing process, hate to use the "rustic" term but it definitely is! Delicious options and overall warm and comforting environment.
google avatar

Bear F.

Yelp
Visited this weekend. Really enjoyed the cider and the atmosphere. The bar is a little gazebo on the back of the property called "The Roost." It was surprisingly busy at 3 pm on a Saturday. The bartender was extremely helpful and had great recommendations for both my wife and me. They also sell cider by the bottle and by the growler. I will be going back to get a growler fill of the delicious and appropriately-named bone dry cider soon.
google avatar

Donovan H.

Yelp
Great place for cider. The reason for 3 Stars is they never have the limited flavors very long. They will post them on Thursday and they sell out right away and they never update the site. Have gone out there several times for their limited flavor only to be told they sold out the first day. That is my only problem with Cockrell.
google avatar

Chad R.

Yelp
I'm a drifter, but not the kind that hides in your attic and surprises you on Christmas morning. The kind that moves around a lot and drinks a lot of cider. What's the cider version of a wine-o? Cockrell is one of my favorite places to drink. Here are the reasons why: solid ciders all around! I prefer dry ciders and their DUSTY and BONE DRY are exquisite! To be honest I'm not really in to berry or fruity things but almost everything I've tried here seems thoughtfully combined and delicious. Right now I'm enjoying the SUNRISE and the SUMMER, but if you don't get here soon I'm not sure you will be able to sample these fine blends. I think that's one of the most exciting things about this place is the ephemeral nature of it all. You either get a taste or you don't, so pay attention to Facebook to get a chance for the special stuff. Sitting here enjoying a cider is a pleasure, right in the orchard, chicken adjacent, this is one of the top three places for me to spend magic hour while I'm In the north west (besides the ocean or deep in the rainforest along the Hoh river). There is a Food truck on Fridays so that might be the day to try Cockrell out the first time. The food really gives you a chance to linger and sample all they have to offer. Sometimes it's a little warm inside but there is plenty of outside seating. You don't have to be a drifter to enjoy Cockrell but if you are make sure you stop by when in Puyallup and if you live in the Puget Sound area make this a regular spot to watch the sun go down.

Yelp
The beauty of Cockrell Brewing goes beyond the delicious ciders that will leave you unable to fathom consuming another Angry Orchard ever again. It goes beyond the smooth hop cider, the spicy devils cider made from habenaro and raspberry, or the sweet array of berry ciders. The beauty goes beyond the pretty farmland surrounding the tasting room. The beauty of this cidery is in the story that made it all possible. Two brothers who quit their day jobs and dared to act on a dream. If you visit "The Roost", which is the tasting room...right now a gazebo with walls...the brothers will gladly tell you their story and their plans. The plans they have for their business and the property will stir something in you and make you wish you had that kind of courage and then make you feel stupid that you couldn't possibly compare in cleverness. These guys are more than just pioneers blazing the path of the cider brewing business in Western Washington. Richard and John are outstanding craftsmen and they are damn good at what they do. Most every berry picked in your drink was picked by the brothers who are the soul engineers and operators (so far). This cider is without a doubt the best I've tasted...ingredients and production straight from their farm in Puyallup. More plans are in the works.... more trees, a deck, firepits, clever brews, all manner of ideas are in the works according to the brothers and the possibilities seem endless. After visiting here and drinking this cider, I believe every word they say.
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
Cockrell's limited hours prohibit us from going as often as we would like but we go down there every chance we get. We love the cider there and the staff is friendly (as is the owner). The tasting room is small but they have a fabulous deck that has recently been expanded to seat more people. I highly suggest the blackberry cider and my husband is partial to the hopped cider. Our only caution is not really even a negative one....Cockrell has a large number of regulars so it can be tough to go during peak times. We have tried to go on a Friday twice now and been unable to get parking. Maybe try a time that is less busy.
google avatar

Robert E.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere, how laid back it is. The cider is great, favorite is the blackberry. The farm feel with a good summer breeze through the gazebo is amazing.
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
Amazing hospitality, nice selection of patrons, cool ambiance, allowed us to beta test cider ideas. I'm not really a sweet cider person, but they had a nice selection of less sweet options. Downfall was they had no Love Your Peaches which brought us here in the first place. The consolation...a Green Apple made special for upcoming St. Patrick's Day.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Very fun. Terrific ciders. Great prices. Fantastic food truck on Friday nights. Will definitely be back.

Mj S.

Yelp
Loved the outdoor seating, the owner and staff were super nice and knowledgeable, and they had delicious cider! Can't wait to come back next time we're visiting Puyallup!

Trevor L.

Yelp
What a great find. Literally a drive by and found this hidden gem! Delicilious ciders, beautiful environment to just relax and enjoy, and warm and welcoming staff. New Puyallup fav!!! Nice job !
