The Gayest Dish on the Menu, According to 10 Queer-Owned Restaurants | Eater

"A cocktail called Sex Work retools the porn star martini format to honor sex work as labor rather than glamourizing the consumer fantasy, intentionally shifting the conversation toward empowerment and the realities many queer people face. The drink’s name and framing acknowledge how platforms like OnlyFans have shifted power dynamics for workers and aim to celebrate resilience amid systemic vulnerability." - Jaya Saxena

What a fun bar!! It’s stylish, quirky, and very relaxing. It’s a shame there aren’t more bars like this. The staff here really make everyone feel welcome. The drinks are very unique and the male bartender customized my ‘Always Money’ to my liking. My cousin had the ‘Sex Work’ where it came in two separate glasses- the Cava in one & the passion fruit vodka in the other. I hope that type of drink takes off even though it means the dish washer will be extra full! Portland itself is a very friendly, quirky city. The Mary is definitely a top place to visit.

Original cocktail recipes in a fun disco style setting! I came during a parking ban, so it was very quiet. However, the ascetic was enough to keep the vibe going. Also, Kathleen rocked! I'm sure that helped too! 🥳

Google
Warm, welcoming, and wonderful! The perfect cocktail bar, just what Portland needs. Isaac and team are amazing, always delivering terrific cocktail creations and matchless hospitality. My favorite thing is to let them take lead and make an off menu cocktail. Highly recommend a visit as part of any trip to Portland.

Great wine pairing dinner tonight. Issac and team are just great folks, who are a joy to be around. Their taste in wine and food are so spot on, with zero pretense. Delightful 😁

Unique and cozy corner for upscaled cocktails and drafts. Walking distance from most downtown restaurants, and overall a must see in Portland. I highly recommend for drinks

If only more places were like Cocktail Mary. Not only do they serve up cheeky, world-class cocktails & the most delicious bites (I still dream about the roulade with beach rose & strawberry jam), but Isaac and the team behind the program are stellar human beings with a true dedication to the community. If it’s important to you to support good people and good practices, make this your bar!

Zack was an upmost hospitality professional . He gave us excellent recommendations on food and local attractions. We felt so at home and welcome at cocktail Mary’s. The food was surprisingly amazing and the vibe was so safe and fun. Highly recommend for a groups of girls traveling

Google
It's an okay place, the scene in Portland is kinda nonexistent, so I guess this place makes a huge dent in just existing alone. The drinks are strong which is a plus and the ambience is great.

Yelp
Chill vibe, great atmosphere and friendly service. Cocktails were tasty! We went on a Monday night and itll be was steady with people coming and going. I like how it's set in a neighborhood. I highly recommend for drinks before or after dinner.

Yelp
Super cute divey(ish) bar at the end of Congress street away from the central business district. I'm not sure if this is a gay bar per se or more just gay friendly. Either way the decor was kitschy and cocktails were great and affordable. Definitely worth a visit - great place to hang out with friends or just grab a drink by yourself at the bar. They also have some outdoor seating if you feel like people watching.

Yelp
Amazing bartender! Amazing service! Amazing drinks, including mocktails! Amazing vibes! Need I say more?

Yelp
I could have summarized my experience here with a one-word review, but Yelp probably would have yelled at me to write more. That word would have been "Fun!" It's lively here on both sides of the bar, between the customers and the very spirited and animated bartenders. Combine that with some decadent snacks and great music, and you have an an experience that's ... well ... Fun! The menu drinks are both interesting in ingredients and names. Our bartender was equally happy to accept my challenges on creating specific drinks or types of drinks as well (since it was not yet busy and he had the time to do so). What a welcome addition to the drink scene in Portland!

Yelp
My friend and I came here during our weekend trip to Portland and it was a great first stop on our bar crawl (and perhaps one of the best places we went to that night). The energy is really fun at night and can be an intimate setting for a date or just a queer friend hangout. It was filled with people but never crowded-feeling. Great spot if you're looking for a chill time.

Yelp
Stopped in during a weekend trip from Boston. It was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday night but I didn't mind at all! The bartender was super friendly and the drinks were perfect. The vibes in this place are awesome. Cool decor and great music. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Awesome staff! The bartender made me one of the best Mezcal drinks I've ever had! Highly recommended for a good drink and nice ambiance!

Yelp
Absolutely loved Cocktail Mary. The barroom was closed during our visit, but we really enjoyed our short stay while waiting for a dinner table nearby. Plenty of seating street side, and prompt and friendly service to boot. Many of the drinks are pre-batched and prepared, making no concessions to freshness, we had great cocktails both. The frozen one was an extra treat on a warm summer eve. I'm jealous of these folks that have such a great neighborhood bar. A+

Yelp
Just remains a 5/5 spot!! Everyone who works there is incredible. The sex work is my favorite drink in Portland!

Yelp
Fabulous place. Popped in for a cocktail before our reservation at Hunt & Alpine. Don't miss the Negroni or oyster crackers made with secrets. The owner is so friendly and is being creative during a tough time for business. I hope he continues to fill all his seats. Thanks for a nice night that felt semi normal.

Yelp
As a fairly awkward person, I'm never going to be the coolest guy in any friend group. To me, Cocktail Mary is that really cool friend that's fun to be around just to satisfy all of the qualities that I don't possess. It's a small, impeccably clean bar meant for drinks only. There's literally only one food item, a heaping bowl of oyster crackers with a family seasoning recipe (which is delicious and only $3). The place has charm, beginning with the bowl of postcards that are pre-stamped. So feel free to send a witty note or holiday card to your mom (or, for the pathetic types, to yourself). The bartenders are knowledgeable and make a mean old fashioned, and the owner (Isaac) is impossibly friendly. Cocktail Mary just has that good vibe that some other recent openings (such as Anoche) lack. Cocktails range from $8 (finally!) to the typically pricey $14, and are well constructed and original. My one gripe...there's only six cocktails on the menu. There are far more mocktails and soft drinks. How about adding a few more for variety? There's also a thoughtful selection of wine and beer. I may never be cool, but when I want to immerse myself with people who are, Cocktail Mary is the place. And my postcard should be arriving today.

Yelp
For my first time to Portland,Maine this bar was amazing. Me and my girlfriend arrived to the bar for it to be closed and the bartender kindly opened the bar back up for us. Shots were cheap, and the snacks were delicious. We had purchased the oyster crackers and olives. Also we met some amazing people at the bar as well :). I will highly recommend this bar. VERY FRIENDLY:)

Yelp
We were so in love with Cocktail Mary!! We stopped in for a drink when we had some time to kill and the vibe was just so welcoming and comfortable. Our bartender, David, was the best. So friendly and helpful. He kept us laughing and served us a delicious round of Kitty Purry's! I would highly recommend a stop at Cocktail Mary to anyone staying in Portland!

Yelp
Stopped here for cocktails while waiting for dinner. Amazing bartender David served us delicious drinks and a hilarious sense of humor. He didn't even care when I accidentally spilled my drink all over like a drunk tourist. Felt very safe and we enjoyed our experience!! Thank you David!

Yelp
Wandered in to this cute spot while waiting for a dinner table down the street. I am so glad we did. Our bartender David was such a doll! He made delicious drinks, and was so funny, warm, and welcoming. I wish I lived here, so I could come back more often.

Yelp
It was a cold, blustery night when I stumbled into this little oasis. The colors here are nice and cheery, the lights dim enough to feel like a cozy secret and the seats by the window soft and inviting. It's small enough to be cozy, but large enough that you don't feel crowded. It has a fun vibe where you can feel like one of the cool kids without trying too hard. For our first round we ordered a Kitty Purry (Aperol, lemon, pamplemousse, and sparkling Brut rosé) and a Scurvy Snack (Banks rum, pineapple gum syrup, lime and caraway). Both were bright and felt like a breath of summer air in December. For the next round we had a Cat Boat Punch (Laird's bonded applejack, orange, clove and whey) and Glitter 'N' Grit beer from Austin Street. The punch was tart and a bit of a let down after the first two cocktails, but over all pretty tasty. The beer was a phenomenal sour that I immediately went and stocked up on at home. One thing I really appreciate about this place is the amount of non alcoholic drink options they have, since I have plenty of people in my life that don't drink but still want to enjoy a night out. Another thing I appreciate about them is their "drafty hour". Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 5-6 they have 2 cocktails on draft, 2 wines on draft and 2 beers on draft. All for only $5. What a great deal!!

Yelp
It's a beautiful space. All the soft lighting and the many mini disco balls it's like the inside of a jewelry box! The service was prompt and not overbearing. I thought the cocktails were inventive but nothing jumped out to me as like something I've never had or seen before. I think Mary feels a little out of place out of the old port but it's a nice addition to the neighborhood beyond the old port. The Marty Washington was good but a little too much maple led it to be very saccharine at the end.

Yelp
Super cute little spot with a fun ambiance and great cocktails. Only outdoor seating for now but hopefully they can open the indoor soon. I'd recommend getting a reservation in advance.

Yelp
We came to Cocktail Mary's during the Covid-19 pandemic in November 2020. We were seated by our wonderful waiter/owner Isaac. We were seated right on the Main Street where we could people watch and the playlist they had going was liiiiiit. The atomosphere was great. The service was quick and efficient and Isaac even came around to serve us some left over candy from Halloween and sit and mingle with us about his bar. Isaac seemed so passionate and welcoming that it made our experience that much better. If you're in Portland, I would definitely suggest stopping by Cocktail Mary's for a drink or two!

Yelp
This is a wonderful cocktail establishment, with very hospitable owners and a great selection. Always love stopping by for a to-go drink or a nice time on a bench with a few delicious cocktails. My most favorite drink is frozen Piña Colada, the best I've tried in the USA. I Highly recommend this place! Ps. They also deliver cocktails through carhop! Check it out!

Sarah M.

Yelp
One of my favorite cocktail bars! Lovely staff, knowledgeable, fantastic cocktails. During the lock down they even had blankets and heaters outside. And warm glue vine!!!!

Yelp
I suspect this is not to my taste. It was too warm. It smelled strongly of bleach (but it was very clean). There wasn't a single cocktail on the menu that I was excited to try - too fussy. The non-alcoholic beverage menu was very tempting. Nice beer list. Staff was very friendly. But...just not my cup of tea..

Yelp
This is such an amazing bar. we had wonderful cocktails and great bar snacks, and we left we walked down the street and the owner actually followed us out to bring us a phone we had left. Hefollowed us for like a block and a half. Quaint Portland bar, amazing cocktails, and impeccable service, not sure what else you can ask

Yelp
Super nice staff, creative cocktails, very LGBT-friendly, and great outdoor patio. Patronized while visiting town, and would definitely like to return!

Yelp
Delicious cocktails. The most friendliest and comforting staff in these weird times (COVID if we ever forget). I can't wait to frequent this amazingly curated space when I we can all touch each other again!!

Yelp
Nice addition to the East End. Cozy vibe, and good cocktails.
