The 8 Best Donuts in Portland, Oregon | Bon Appétit

"A no-frills, nostalgic donut shop focused on classic, well-executed offerings: airy raised yeast donuts with crisp glazes, dense old-fashioned cake donuts, oozy filled Bavarian creams, comforting fritters, and even chewy mochi donuts. The brand pairs its handcrafted donuts with house-roasted coffee (roasting since 2013) and is known for simple flavors like chocolate, lavender, and Bavarian cream across multiple neighborhood locations." - ByZoe Baillargeon

Perfect location off the max. The donuts are fresh, coffee is good. Family is always so sweet when my baby and I come in. The mom makes a point to hold the door open for us when it’s not too busy. Feels good to support a small business rather than always relying on the ‘bucks.

Google
They were so friendly this morning! Thank you! Something transpired before I walked down here that wasn’t the best experience which is sad because I care about people that don’t even know it. So because it went sour thank you for lifting my spirits!

Bethany Lee

Google
The coffee is pretty good, the doughnuts are light and fluffy but the customer service could be improved. It seems like they need be better staffed there at closing and while I accept that getting a coffee within the hour of closing is inconvenient it would be appreciated to not be treated like a major inconvenience.

Google
Want and got some donuts at Coco Donuts Uptown 🍩 😋. I got the cinema rolled donut and the Apple fritter donut($3.25 ea). I didn't get anything to drink. Because I was in a hurry and I just wanted some donuts real fast, but the smell of the coffee was really tempting. If you don't drink coffee, there are other options such as different varieties of tea and hot chocolates. The prices are quite reasonable, nothing is more over ($6.50). The packaging is super cute, too. That atmosphere at the shop is quite relaxing. There's no harsh music playing. And it is quite calming in the morning. Service there was fine, no problems with the employee and everything was fast and easy.

Google
The new ownership here is really good! I don’t know her name but she’s Khmer/cambodia and she is very sweet. If it’s not busy I like talking with her. The employees are also so nice and I’m excited to wake up in the morning to get my coffee there. (I don’t eat donuts but they look good)

Google
I have been stopping in for donuts and they are quite tasty. The always tast fresh, the frosting is not overly sweet, and they last all day if your a bite here and there kinda person. 10/10 recommend

Google
Good coffee. Good donuts. If Coco Donuts are your jam in this town full of donut options you probably already know it. For me it was a good white mocha in the right spot before I caught the train. Waited inside for the train to arrive then walked right on board. This spot is spartan but clean and close to the MAX transit stop next to Providence Park.

Google
I came in to sample donuts to cater for an event and the girl behind the counter, Cameron, was incredibly helpful. She ran through the different flavors and kinds of donuts, and helped me with pricing and my options. I ultimately had to go to another Coco location to get my sample which Cameron helped facilitate as this location was doing a private tour. 10/10 would recommend if Cameron is working.

Yelp
$14 bucks for a 12 oz Snicker doodle latte, lemon filled, Bavarian cream, maple old fashion Pros: Overall the donuts were flavorful, fluffy, and delicious. The Bavarian cream had an even amount of filling and was delicious. The lemon filled was airy in flavor but lacked enough filling. Now the star of the show was the snicker doodle latte. It was just sweet enough to enjoy and was made with tender love lol!!! It was soooo good. Overall the donuts are really good. The place and the packaging was clean and cute. The box is a high quality box. Service was great no issues. Cons: The price point for the donuts are extremely high at roughly $3 a pop. There's nothing really special about the donuts to make them this high. It seems you are paying for the nice box and their location because I cant justify spending so much for 1 donut. The lemon donut had very little lemon filling. I took about 3 bites (half of the donut) and didnt have any filling. I took pics for you to see.

Yelp
This place was amazing. The cashier was so nice. Will be returning as soon as I can! Try to get there as early as possible as it can get pretty busy.

Yelp
This was Stop 2 on the donut tour of Portland, OR, and it was an OK stop. We weren't allowed to go inside this shop (others we were) so we stood outside in the cold waiting for our donuts. Bummer. I wish I could say more but trying to eat donuts, manage the cold, and stand outside with nowhere to set anything down made it hard to take pictures. Nothing was memorable in comparison to the other donut shops on our 4 stop donut tour. Nothing was bad, but not being able to sit and enjoy made a difference on the experience.

Yelp
After seeing a lot of locations for Coco Donuts around Portland I had to give it a shot and I now I have my go to dessert spot when I'm in town! I got a box with a variety of donuts including their mochi donuts, donut holes, cake donuts, and eclairs. Every single one of them tasted great and had they own distinct flavors. I've only had mochi donuts once before from a proper mochi donut store and these were very close to them. They had that classic chewy texture and a nice sweet icing on top. I really enjoyed the regular donuts as well, they tasted super fresh and soft and the quality of the glaze was really good. The service was also excellent. The person at the counter was very nice and was chatting with the customers. They were polite and gave service with a smile which I always appreciate. Will definitely go again when I'm in the area! Tips: - If you've never had a mochi donut before give it a shot! It has its own unique texture that makes it feel very different from a regular donut - All of their donuts taste amazing so don't be afraid to be a little adventurous!

Yelp
Ok, I'm here again! This time I got the Crumbs donut, maple bar and chocolate mochi donuts. And I'm happy to report everything is delicious as usual! Also to my surprise, I arrived at the happy hour. Meaning you get one free donuts towards your purchase, which is totally awesome! Free donut = happiness
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this donut shop! We stumbled upon it while on a walk. From the outside, I didn't expect much. But the inside interior was a welcoming place to sit and enjoy a donut. We happened to be there at happy hour. With the purchase of one donut, we got another free. This included the apple fritters! The maple bar was fluffy and fresh. This was surprising to me because we were there around 1pm. Sometimes donut shops have what they have from the morning and are often a bit stiff and lose their fluff. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
While in the area, I stopped in here for a donut to enjoy with some coffee. They have a very nice selection of the typical types of donuts, as well as some interesting and unique ideas. My donut was really good, fresh and definitely not dry. The chocolate was great quality too.

Yelp
The lady at the counter gets 5 stars but the donuts themselves feel average at best to me . I have had Coco donuts multiple times and I never really cared about the taste much . Also , almost all of my visits here they are out of something or the other and perhaps that's why I might not have tasted their best offerings yet . They do have good beverages especially the Lavender latte. The store is clean and spacious and the staff is always welcoming and friendly .

Corrie C.

Yelp
For the good the service was friendly and fast. I also enjoyed my drip coffee. For the downsides I feel I must have come on an off day. I ordered two of each of the different mochi donuts and two regular glazed. The first mochi donut I tried only tasted like old used oil. When I pressed it oil would ooze out and it was pretty unappetizing. I tried a few bites of the others and they were exactly the same (don't know why I expected anything different since only the glaze was different). My partner only had two bites of his glazed donut and said the flavor was off and the texture was bad, he tossed what remained of it. I couldn't bring myself to bring back the rest of the donuts to my family and found a little free pantry to leave them at. Hopefully someone out there gets some enjoyment from them.

Yelp
Came here about 45 minutes before they closed on Saturday. They didn't have much left. But these were what we got and they tastes good, better than your chain donuts. But definitely sad I didn't get one of those filled donuts, will come back for it.

Yelp
Best donut's in Goose Hollow area of Downtown Portland. People that work there are very kind and it's cozy and understated and quiet.
google avatar

Yelp
Genuinely one of the best old fashion donuts I've had! Extremely friendly staff, and the overall store is very cute and clean!
google avatar

Yasaman E.

Yelp
Had the most amazing lavender lattes and fresh donuts. Have ordered from them three times now and every time they have fresh tasting donuts and delicious made coffee. The apple fritters are also to die for!
google avatar

Cara L.

Yelp
I'm not a donut person - in fact my idea of a treat is something salty or savory. The I was introduced to Coco Donuts and I'm hooked!! They have a crumb cake donut that is my go to donut always! It's light, not too sweet, and the key....fresh! All the visits I've had here I've never had a donut that tasted stale or old. The staff is always friendly and helpful and just happy to help.

Yelp
I think I may have found my new favorite donut place in Portland. I came in on Monday, around 10ish and there weren't many people in the shop. It being closer to when most folks were actually at work, I didn't pay much mind. I admired the selection and felt myself give a little gasp at how low the prices were in comparison to some other donut facilities in the PDX area. I ended up ordering the raspberry jam filled, chocolate custard filled, and crunchy (which is just a donut dusted in crunches), and a drip coffee. I wanted something less sweet aka bitter to offset the sweetness of the mass donuts. The lady got a simple chocolate covered buttermilk donut and a latte. We are very different when it comes to sweets, I like to think we balance each other out. Onwards to the donuts. The donuts were all pillowy in texture and had a nice bite to them. They weren't over, under, too hard, etc. literally perfection. I haven't had a donut this good since I lived in Austin (here's to you Shipley). I loved the raspberry filled the most. The custard donut wasn't bad, the custard had a nice consistency but I didn't like the frosting too much (Chucks in Renton has my heart for custard donuts), the crunchy one wasn't bad either, it was definitely the most tame (in sweetness). I didn't try the buttermilk but was told it was good. The lady really enjoyed her latte as well. All in all, I had some stellar donuts and received some great customer service in the process. And yes, if you were wondering, I did eat all 3 by myself while sitting in the shop (waiting out the rain). I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Yelp
the cake donut + glazed donut fusion was fantastic and the ube latte with a shot of espresso is some of the best coffee ive had in a while!
google avatar

Mercy C.

Yelp
Came for the Mochi donuts. They had four flavors: strawberry, blueberry something, black sesame, matcha. We also ended up getting other kinds: lavender, apple fritter, and chocolate buttermilk. They were all nice and light!
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Looking for a simple, tasty donut with no crowds to deal with? Coco donuts is your spot. This location off of the Providence Park max station seems pretty quiet and they had a good selection even in the afternoon. We tried an apple fritter, maple bar and the lavender donut. The maple bar and lavender donut were light, with very yeasty dough. I liked it. The apple fritter had a nice crunch on the outside but was moist on the inside. I'd get donuts from here again.
google avatar

Jone V.

Yelp
Now that I have tasted more donuts around PDX, this location's lavender donuts remain an amazing and delicious taste experience. The donut is fluffy yet substantial and moist, with the lavender leaving a pleasant touch of sweetness that does not overpower. Especially combined with the cappuccino, I go here to chill because it is not busy, the wifi is fairly fast (pw cocouptown), and I love the shade of the surrounding trees. After telling the staff how much I enjoyed their coffee (they have a Vietbamese version!), she told me that I cannot purchase the beans because the owner roasts them himself! Grrrbl@&crickey ... Parking can be difficult here, but the espresso and donuts and sit-down-shop are so worth it.
google avatar

Jeanne Z.

Yelp
We stopped here before meeting up with some friends on the way to a Thorns soccer game. I was slightly disappointed with the Lavender donuts, it was not as flavorful as I was anticipating. Regardless, the Lavender Latte was delicious and succeeded my expectations! It had a great lavender warming flavor, and it was really well balanced with the espresso. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the Chocolate Buttermilk Donut, it was crispy on the outside, and really satisfying. I also liked that there wasn't a lot of "hype" with this place, we did not have to wait in long lines or anything, just a regular, everyday normal donut shop with good donuts!
google avatar

Gabriel R.

Yelp
Really big selection of donuts and everything tasted fresh. Parking in this location was actually pretty good, considering that there was an event up the street. I had a maple bar and it was one of the best I've had in a long time. Paired with the coffee, it made for a really great breakfast. Cleanliness can be upped, but other than that, great location. Friendly staff and large selection.
google avatar

Chris N.

Yelp
Sunday's are for donuts, right!? Well not at Coco Donuts. Roll in at 9:41am and they have about 3 picked over options remaining. I understand this is a boutiquey luxury donut shop but they may need to rethink their planning especially on Sunday's as this is not the first time I've rolled in and the inventory is depleted. I feel bad for the workers that need to do an apology tour for customers that come to the shop expecting some morning sweetness. Maybe next time (if there is one) I'll be able to support this local small business.
google avatar

Jam C.

Yelp
Thanks to the stranger who pointed us to this place when she saw us standing outside a closed Blue Star Donuts. They don't have crazy flavors but the texture of their donuts are perfect and they are not overwhelmingly sweet. I got the lavender donut and lavender hot chocolate and loved both of them! Not very perfumey at all but you can definitely taste the lavender. I also tried my boyfriend's apple fritter and it had a crispy outside but very soft inside. Come here if you're looking for quality and tasty classic donuts and great coffee/hot chocolate that are not overpriced.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Heres the place to go for real donuts. No silly fruit loops donuts, no fancy bourbon cherry donuts, just good honest donuts. 5 stars!!!!
google avatar

Paige P.

Yelp
Best donuts in town. I'm sure the secret ingredient is...... L O V E !!! Have not met a donut there that I didn't like! Subtle hints of lavender, chocolate goodness....it's all so yummy. AND the people that work there are the nicest!
google avatar

Korrie K.

Yelp
The lavender donut and lavender latte had a slight lavender taste. Not surprising I guess. Room temperature donuts are not my thing. Donuts should always be fresh warm slightly cripsy cakey sweet salty savory aka GOOD. Come to the east coast peeps and have a real donut.
google avatar

Em G.

Yelp
If you're looking for yeast donuts (raised donuts) then Coco Donuts have some very good ones. I gotta say, it's hard to find a good yeast donut that isn't Krispy Kream. But Coco's "plain" donuts are anything but plain. It's light and fluffy, and you get the feeling that you can shovel more then one in your mouth at any point in time. Glazed donuts are $1. Chocolate, sugar glazed or sugar sprinkled. (Double thumbs up ) The premium donuts are a bit over $2, but not disappointed. If you're looking for more then one donut, go with a Regular dozen for $14. Premium dozen $15. Love donuts!

Yelp
Shhhh is a secret! Hands down is or should be the winner of the best donuts in town. Absolutely yummy. Soft sweetness. Best part you don't have to stand in line to get one or two or a dozen :)
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
My favorite donut shop in town. I stop there often on my way to work. The lavender one is amazing!
google avatar

Eva M.

Yelp
Their donuts are perfectly light and fluffy. Plus they have mochi donuts! Easily my favorite donuts in Portland.

Joanne L.

Yelp
I live 20 mins away, so I wanted to call and make sure they still have some mochi donuts left before I drive there. The lady on the phone was super helpful! She said I can just tell her what I want, and she will save it in a box for me. When I got there, she even gave me a free mochi ball to try. It was delicious! Thank you for the great customer service! I will be back for sure!
google avatar

Mikhail H.

Yelp
My favorite newer donut shop in PDX! Great donuts and their "Coco" donut with Coco nibs and chocolate was my husband's favorite. I've also never experienced a line here!!
google avatar

Suzy V.

Yelp
Such a better deal than Blue Star! 6$ for 10 donuts was our deal at the time and the donuts are super good, especially the baked old fashioned sand the lavender ones. Donuts have gotten so popular but it's still so crazy to pay 3-5$ PER DONUT when you can get a dozen for almost that amount! LOVED ALLISON she was so cute and charming and helpful. She deserves a raise. She is a credit to Coco! Came a second time recently and Sunshine was absolutely darling. It was Valentine's Day and they were sold out! I was super bummed, but she told me more were on the way. I waited around for a while, then she told me she would actually call me! And she did! She save a dozen for me and I was SO HAPPY!!! That was way above and beyond the call of duty and I will be now a lifelong Coco Donut fan.

Sam A.

Yelp
Everytime I've been in there, they have just been the sweetest and most genuine workers. As a Grubhub drivers it can be kinda hit and miss since not all drivers are super nice and that kinda leads to stores not being super nice either. Will go back in my own time to get their yummy donuts and coffee!
google avatar

Amelie C.

Yelp
One of the best donuts I've ever had. Rivals the quality of Blue Star for half the price. Not quite as wacky and adventurous as Blue Star or Voodoo, but the donut itself more than made up for the lack of unique dressing. I had the chocolate glazed with shredded coconut topping. The outside was crisp, the inside was soft and just sweet enough, a perfectly cooked donut. It was cheap too! Just a bit over a dollar for one donut. I also had an iced coffee, and while it wasn't the best I've had, I can't be too hard on them for it, it was just iced coffee like you'd get anywhere, but it didn't bring ruin my experience or anything. All in all, I left pretty impressed! I will definitely return.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Damn, I going to have to work out a little longer today. Walking around downtown this morning and I just couldn't resist. Got the chocolate covered buttermilk bar - melted in my mouth with wonderful, tasty sweetness and the tang of the buttermilk. The very pleasant girl working there recommended it and she was spot on. And the coffee was brewed to wonderfully and went together with the bar like Desi goes with Lucy - a little brash and bold to compliment the sweet and bitter of the bar. When the kind girl asked about cream for my coffee and I asked for milk, she pulled out the milk jug for me and gave me what I wanted. I'm sure glad I don't live near this place. The only knocks are: - The coffee could have been a bit hotter - the selection was pretty limited (but in there defense it was 10:00 am on a saturday)
google avatar

Rose M.

Yelp
I've been interested in trying these donuts for years, but they wee always closed when I happened to be downtown or near one. But alas, I was finally chosen to taste one of these elusive treats one blissful afternoon! The Safeway by my house use to have delicious donuts cooked to perfection for a small price, then a new baker took over and it all went downhill. I'm big on the textures of my sweets, and I especially don't like burnt bottoms on my donuts. The whole donut should be soft and fluffy, which was exactly what these were. They were so light, yet so fulfilling! Voodoo Donuts is frequently hailed as the king of donuts out here, but all the wacky ingredient combos in the world could never make up for quality donuts. Donuts that aren't too sweet, improperly cooked, or stale. To top it off, they were rather cheaply priced ($1-$2), which I did not expect. Will be hopefully coming back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
Yesterday my family and I were a bit blue (see what I did there?) with our other Portland donut shop stop. We consulted Yelp to research other places to appease our donut obsession other than Voodoo. Coco Donuts came up with their 4.5 rating at their 6th Street location. Excited by the prospect of more donuts ahead, we stopped by the 6th street location after an afternoon spent at the Alder food trucks. It was less than a 10 minute walk away. Unfortunately when we arrived, around 2:30ish, all the donuts were sold out. n00b move, I guess they sell out frequently. The friendly employee was kind enough to call up the other shop on 17th to see if there were any donuts left. They were running out too and only had half a pan left, but agreed to hold their last three raised donuts for us - a chocolate bar, a chocolate donut with peanuts on top, and a glazed lavendar. Woohoo! We ended up adding a glazed cake donut topped with crumbled donut to our order when we arrived. All the donuts were fresh, even with it being close to 3 in the afternoon. The donuts were fairly priced at less than $2. And the employees were star quality, they took the extra time to cut up our donuts so it would be easier to share. An added plus, no long tourist line! Definitely one of my new PDX donut favorites :]
google avatar

Deanna M.

Yelp
So great! It was my first dozen and they added a free Mochi donut so my mom could try! Loved they were able to pay attention to such detail for their customers.
google avatar

Yelp
The Coffee that was being served at Coco Donuts near Providence Park is what brought me In to Coco Donuts. It is Taaasty. I did NOT get a Doughnut. They were Out of my favorites when I was there at about 1:35 PM. This Neighborhood has changed A LOT since I first moved to Portland, Oregon in 2001. Also, when I was inside Coco Donuts, I noted that they had Honey,... should you prefer that as your sweetener of Choice in your Coffee. I walked Downtown with my Coffee, I felt like taking a walk on that afternoon. It's not THAT far to the Central Library anyway. The MAX and a few Buses drive right Past this Coco Donuts location as well. There is VERY little parking in this Area though... you will probably have to Walk about six or seven blocks... leave your Car at Home.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
I just arrived in Portland and Coco Donuts was one our first coffee stops- it was excellent! Their donuts are made fresh and the coffee was delicious. I'll definitely be returning!!

Tim Z.

Yelp
This business is amazing! I used to go here once a week in high school and stopped once I graduated. However my work got some donuts from this place (for the break room), and I fell in love again! Must have! (Also the lavender one is my favorite)
google avatar

Ky R.

Yelp
If your looking for a more affordable donut than blue star/voodoo, coco donuts is for you. Amazing friendly staff and a clean environment make this place happen. I would definitely revisit this shop and encourage those of you not willing to pay 3x $ for a donut.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Really great atmosphere, delicious donuts, and amazing service! Stopped in here before a Timbers game awhile back and I can't wait to go back and grab some more donuts! We ordered the lavender, chocolate, and then original sugar glazed. All three amazing!
google avatar

Tyler Jahmal Z.

Yelp
Came by this am for a half dozen for my staff. The flavor profiles of each donut is amazing on point, each donut was fresh and the lavender donut was killer. I will be back. Oh and the prices!!!! So inexpensive!!!
google avatar

Kara P.

Yelp
I had to get off the MAX to try this place & was glad I did. On the way back from the zoo, we stopped at the PGE park for a snack & was very surprised to find how cute it was inside. The donuts were fresh & delightful. I had the chocolate glaze & the cake was airy. My son had the chocolate sprinkles & he gobbled it up in under 1 minute. My husband had the boston creme & the old fashion chocolate & he loved both of them. People were very friendly & pets were allowed inside. I was glad we made the stop to support this local business. I suggest that you offer newspapers, magazine racks, flat screen, or a wireless hot spot, so that people would want to stay for a little bit longer. They did a great job in making it inviting on the outside.
google avatar

Cori W.

Yelp
Fabulously fresh and delicious donuts with just enough variety to keep me interested. The staff here are always friendly and move the line quickly. My favorite is a tie between the maple bar and the lavender glazed. Their yeast donuts are so fluffy and soft without having that 'shortening' flavor. They also serve Stumptown Coffee, a personal favorite of mine. Top that all off with easy Square payment and you've got a great donut shop! I only wish they were open Sundays!
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
I came here to see my friend Sotheavy and enjoy a donut, but she wasn't here so I just had the donut. This Lavender donut and Iced rose latte is hands down the best I had on my trip here to Portland. I'll be back soon!
google avatar

rory j.

Yelp
My favorite donut place in Portland. They make donuts the way the should be; light, flaky, and melt in your mouth. Perfect! Reasonably priced too.
