"Downtown Hawaiian restaurant Coconut’s Fish Cafe is closing up for the rest of the year. The sunny seafood shack couldn’t compete with the construction happening right out front, so they’re waiting for things to wrap up before giving DTLA another go." - Farley Elliott

Best seafood in the state of AZ! I am a long time Coconuts addict since they opened in 2013. The fish is fresh and delicious. The price is excellent as I can usually have lunch and dinner from one meal. I call my order in and it’s ready and perfect in 10-15 minutes. If you eat in, the food, beer and atmosphere are wonderful. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Thank you for the delicious and nutritious meals you serve!

Let's get this out of the way - this place can be expensive, especially for lunch. I say, can be because it doesn't have to be. If you stick with a couple of fish tacos and some water, not too bad. If you have one order of fish tacos, appetizer shrimp skewer, coleslaw, French fries, and a couple of bottled water... It's almost $50. For lunch. For a casual place. With that said - the food is excellent, the people are amazing and make this location, the atmosphere is great, and it's nice sitting outside; the parking is ample, and the location is easy to get to.

I just think it's a funny story because I went there, ordered the kid's butter pasta (because I don't eat a lot usually and it's a good portion), and it usually comes with a small cup of parmesan cheese. I was going to ask for more before the food came out, but they were one step ahead and gave me two cups of cheese. I just think it's really funny, and worked out well in the end :) Also still a great place to get food. Fish and chips are where it's at, and the pasta is really great. Been going there since before this location opened and still a great spot.

Google
Blew my mind! Excellent, excellent food. They were also very conscientious of my shellfish allergy. Staff was courteous. Food came out quick.

Google
Great seafood and fish tacos. Decent portion size and reminiscent of fish tacos on the islands.

Google
This place is awesome. First of all the food was delicious, the fried fish and chips and the coconut shrimp were perfectly crispy and the poke had a wonderful sauce. But I was even more impressed by the customer service! The owner not only greeted us but also checked in how we were enjoying our food. All of the staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the food. And the bathroom was extremely clean which is always a good sign. 10/10 I highly recommend.

I absolutely love this place! The food is always fresh and tasty. The people working are so friendly. I especially like that they make it easy to eat healthier and have amazing flavors.

Google
The food was excellent. The customer service was great as well. I like when the staff can name their top 3 favorite meals (or can stand behind their recommendations). The dish in the photo is the south of the border Mahi Mahi over rice. It was fresh and very feeling. In fact I only ate half of my plate. The servings are big. My friend had the taco mountain with steak and they stated the steak was worth it. We are definitely going to come back. Also their fry basket is huge (sharable).

Yelp
The food was delicious and very reasonable for the meal. The service was great and the atmosphere was very relaxed. I will definitely return to try more food choices.

Yelp
Response back to Kim... This review was for your Shea location - but after your comments - I'll give both a pass because it really doesn't change your comments to me. Calling customer names may help you feel better but probably not the best approach. I've been to both locations in Maui -and often over the years and we heard there was a 3rd location. When you closed your Gilbert location-we thought you just had your Shea location. Kim- I didn't make anything up and in fact it was you I believe that I spoke with who gave me those facts you accused me of making up. The woman I spoke with said she was one of the owners. I also have been to the CA locations that you said didn't make it due to Covid and quality control issues. You also told me you could change the recipe as you noted in your comments to me. it was why given the surprisingly lack of quality/taste we thought maybe you had changed something. Maybe it was an off day in the kitchen- kind of like your attitude - hardly the Aloha Spirit we are used to. Aloha back at you and you sound kind of Karenish that you accused me of... You might think of an attitude adjustment and maybe taste your product to assure it meets your stated standards. We've heard from others who stopped going to your place for the same reason I brought it to your attention - so you could check it out for yourself and fix it. Slainte'

Yelp
We had a nice dinner for four on a Friday evening. The patio is a nice size so it accommodates a lot of people. We ordered the calamari, fish and a and a poke bowl salad. The calamari are heavily breaded and while crunchy the strips of calamari steak were still tender. The fish and chips are some of the best we've had, moist fish, flavorful batter and well cooked thin French fries. The poke bowl was the bomb however. Very fresh tuna with a nice kick of spice in my spicy version, plenty of pickled ginger, edamame, red onions, A few slices of avocado, fresh cucumbers, radishes, and chunks of mango. It was very flavorful and quite a large portion. Our friends ordered the fish plates and one suggestion would that be they get slightly larger plates as their food was falling off of them and hard to manage!

Kris L.

Yelp
Had the fish tacos on a follow up visit and they were excellent, loved the mango salsa and the two tacos were more than enough food.

Amy H.

Yelp
Loved the Mac Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi. Yum! The service was great and the outdoor patio was nice.

Greg S.

Yelp
First time visiting this fast food seafood restaurant. We loved it. The seafood chowder tasted great and we got the grilled Mahi Mahi on Ceasars salad. Excellent food and the other dishes coming out looked great also.

Holly B.

Yelp
This restaurant is in a great location set in a large shopping center. The staff are very friendly and helpful while trying to figure out what you may want to order. Once at the desk, you place your order and take a number stand to the table of your choosing. We ordered the coconut shrimp and calamari as appetizers, they were both good. The calamari was not your typical circular shape, they were closer to strips and a bit chewy. The coconut shrimp were perfectly golden brown and just the right amount of coconut coating. We both ordered the fish tacos as they were recommended but they were unfortunately very bland. The coleslaw didn't have any salt or flavor and the fish didn't have much seasoning either. I would def recommend trying something else, if you're looking for flavorful food. All the ingredients seemed fresh and well put together. They have plenty of salt and pepper shakers and different types of sauce bottles which is needed to slice of any dish ordered. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of free parking. The restrooms are extremely clean and well kept, just note they only have 2 single bathrooms. I gave 4 stars instead of 3 because the staff were so friendly.

Anne M.

Yelp
Love this place. Super clean restaurant. Very friendly service. Food is delicious. Nice outdoor patio as well.

Yelp
I don't get the hype for this place. I first found Coconuts by accident. Then I saw on Yelp how great this place is. So after a couple months I finally pulled the trigger to try it. And it was a huge let down. The only thing Coconuts had going for it was their customer service, which was great. The first thing I noticed when walking in to order was how hot the inside was. 115 degrees outside and, according to the thermostat inside Coconuts, 87 degrees inside. Other than the temperature the restaurant is nicely decorated. We ordered food and it came out pretty quick which is always nice. We ordered: -fish tacos which were pretty dry and bland -kids grilled chicken -coconut shrimp(the best thing we ordered by far) -the fish and chips which were just okay. Among the mediocre food was a giant hair baked into the fish and chips. Now I understand things happen, but Coconuts fails at acknowledging their mistakes. No apologizing for the disgusting mess up, they just offered to replace the food. Also, the fish and chips totally killed my stomach the following day

Yelp
Still great after all these years. Love this place. Good quality seafood, great service and casual atmosphere.

Jacque C.

Yelp
Our first time to this New Location!! Great ambiance as usual with their Bob to the islands!! Darling surf tables, boards on the walls and videos of scenery from the islands makes you feel like you should walk out and get to the sandy beach....nope 112 in Arizona still but it does take you mentally there!! The food is fantastic- my hubby loved the fish tacos and I'm always down for the coconut shrimp!! Service was friendly, attentive and ready to please! We left feeling the Mahalo vibe and will be back for sure!! Kudos!

Ann Y.

Yelp
I had a really poor experience at the Coconut Fish Cafe recently. I ordered fish tacos and a side of shrimp, but unfortunately, the shrimp tasted like rubber, and the taco was tough, with bland fish. Overall, I can't say I'd recommend this place, as it seems that their overall quality has been negatively impacted since COVID.

Kay J.

Yelp
So we've been to Coconut's fish cafe in Maui and Kauai several times in the past, and we absolutely loved it. Just a month ago we were in Kauai again and thought we'd go for lunch, but we discovered that it was permanently closed. Our hearts were broken, broken I tell you! Sadly, we learned that many places permanently shut down due to limited tourism in Hawaii that first year or two of COVID. Boooooo! The day after we got back from Kauai, we took a road trip to Scottsdale, AZ to see some friends. Guess what?! We see a Coconut's Fish Cafe! Say whaaaaat! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming and cozy, with that laid-back island vibe that we hadn't snapped out of just yet. What a gracious way to ease back into reality, slowly. Haha! The staff was so incredibly nice. The restaurant was immaculate. The bathroom was SO clean. You can tell the staff was on top of maintaining this joint. Constantly cleaning up everything, everywhere. But the real star of the show, of course, was the food. Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The fish tacos were as good as I remember them. Dead lord. The mahi mahi was tender and juicy, and the homemade salsa was the perfect complement. It was our first time getting the blackened mahi mahi and I was so blown away. The photo doesn't do it any justice. It was super yummy, even the brown rice and the coleslaw were so so good. Can't wait to get this dish again. Meanwhile, we just gotta hope they open up a location in LA. Highly recommend this place!

Cece P.

Yelp
Took my mom here for her 85th birthday lunch. She really enjoyed her fish, which was awesome, as I thought it was going to be too crispy for her. She LOVED the seafood chowder. My coconut shrimp were a bit small and plain for the price. My brother, not a seafood connessuer, was severely disappointed by the (clearly) Kraft macaroni and cheese he was served. He said he wouldn't have minded if they would have just put on the menu that it was boxed. There was a good variety of sauces available and thumbs up for serving Pepsi products. The restaurant was nicely decorated with a surfing theme throughout. Food came out at different intervals giving it a more fast food than sit down restaurant feel.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Their salad is tasty. I also tried the fish tacos which were great with their mango salsa. There is good seating here for groups and great draft beers. Looking forward to come back.

Candace W.

Yelp
Craving fish tacos and I found this place on Yelp and decided to stop by and try it out. It's located in a plaza with plenty of parking. There's outdoor and indoor seating. The mahi mahi fish tacos were good. It came with a lot of coleslaw and mango salsa which I enjoyed. It was like eating a salad. The tortillas were doubled with cheese in between like a quesadilla. I was going to get a basket of fries but the cashier recommended a side for 2 people and it came with plenty! Staff was attentive and kept coming by to check on us, clear off plates and were constantly cleaning.

R G.

Yelp
This was a super pleasant surprise with the options and quality of food we received. Would go often if it was local to where we live. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Many options on menu. We both left full and happy.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Great food Fast friendly service Fresh fish Happy to have come here during lunch rush and it was pretty expedient Thanks for the yum

Sue H.

Yelp
Quick lunch of fish tacos, companion had chowder. The fish is in chunky pieces not fillets, and there are two types in the tacos. They are extremely tasty and the toppings include mango which I love. The only thing that was a little strange was the two taco entree was served on two separate small round luncheon plates, instead of a platter. Perhaps they ran out of platters or this is their normal. They were still yummy. Order at the counter and they bring it to the table. Cheerful friendly people, who checked back in frequently to see if we needed anything else. Patio dining will be great for fall, I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.

Kersten L.

Yelp
Very good and fast! The coconut shrimp was yummy! The service was friendly! The price is a little high for what it is but overall a good experience. They have Pepsi products and Chiba just tea. The tiger sauce is delicious - available by the silverware.

Cindy C.

Yelp
Their new location near Harkins is more accessible with big parking lot. The food also seem to have improved too; it was already excellent to begin with. Onion rings are so yummy even after sitting in the container for 30 minutes in the car ride home. Tortilla doesn't get soggy either. Kudos to Coconuts; you have Hawaiian food down to science. Highly highly recommend.

Mike G.

Yelp
Went for fried fish...did not like batter...wanted beer batter fish not what they offer. Fiavor of fish was fine.

Joyce M.

Yelp
Not as good as the prior location and has declined over the past several visits. Food on the floor, ice machine not working (past 2 visits) and food quality not as fresh. I had the poke bowl and it tasted and looked old. The calamari appetizer was great!

William M.

Yelp
Looking for a nice casual fresh fish place on a Friday night at this place delivered in all areas. All the various menu items we got, we're freshly prepared, especially the macadamia mahi-mahi over rice which was a very high-quality. The sides are very good as well if they had a really good selection of beverages. Service at the counter was friendly and efficient and the place was very clean. An excellent casual dinner dining experience.

Kathy S.

Yelp
I recently tried coconut Fish Café... Wow, what a taste explosion! My husband and I ordered the fish tacos as well as the poke bowl. Both were truly exceptional and made to order. The staff was attentive and the food was fresh and delicious.

Alan B.

Yelp
This place was quite costly, I didn't take pictures, but we got 2 appetizers and a bowl of soup. The appetizers were 9.99 for 6 fried shrimp, and same for coconut shrimp. We did really enjoy the clam chowder (I believe that was the name). I didn't think I would like it, but I highly enjoyed it. What caught my eye to being pricey was their salad, the plain Caesar salad and to add chicken was +$5.00 just to add chicken. The place was kinda neat, surf board tables, and the workers there are always making sure everyone's tables are clean. They come take your trash for you. Things like that. It wasn't bad but I wasn't blown away either. We do recommend others to try it and we would eat here again. I changed my review from a 4 star to a 3 star because the owner wanted to argue with my personal opinion, though it was mostly positive

Cheryl M.

Yelp
I frequent Coconut's Fish Cafe at least a couple times a month for the exceptional fish and sides. The quality is great with a warm neighborly vibe. The entire staff are amazing too...very kind and helpful.

Food C.

Yelp
Always good always fresh Casual setting Nice servings Affordable Nice staff Thank you, Coconuts!

Mike R.

Yelp
Excellent food excellent atmosphere. Excellent service wonderful people a great place to eat.

Cathy W.

Yelp
The food was super fresh, hot and amazing! The real reason for this review is the young man with the engaging grin and helpful demeanor- high energy- very welcoming and seemed like he really cared that the customers enjoy their experience. I watched him interact with numerous customers! Well done Coconuts! We will be back.

Emma C.

Yelp
The food here is fresh and very consistent. The grilled shrimp appetizer is excellent and I have gotten it multiple times. The calamari is also very good large pieces of calamari. The fish is always cooked perfectly and the different seasoning choices are great to have. I also like the tomato, the coleslaw, the cheese, the brown rice. The drinks are a little pricey for the size of cups but that's okay since it's unlimited. The atmosphere is very nice and there's plenty of seating usually. The people are very nice that work there at the counter. All in all 10 out of 10 inconsistent and I've been here many times each year.

C L.

Yelp
UPDATE : Kim, we do not drink alcohol and the receipt attached to this review reflects that. Sounds like you have our party of 3 mixed up with another disappointed party! ~~~~ I was initially excited to finally eat here. Love the decor and thought I might find some good Hawaiian food options and coconut desserts. Nope Food -- was OK. Ordered the fish & chips. fish was pretty good but fries were skinny and lukewarm Staff / order taker was not friendly. She did not greet new customers with a SMILE or with any excitement. NOTE TO STAFF -- How about making a welcoming statement "welcome to Coconut Fish Cafe, have you been here before?" If customer seems undecided, ASK the question "Can I recommend anything for you?" If you don't like socializing with people FIND ANOTHER JOB! NOTE TO THE OWNER-- Be careful who you put on the front desk. They represent your company! So what happened? This same person who took the order was later extremely rude when delivering the food. we chose to sit outside and in a SHADED section of the patio. When food was ready, the same staff person calls out "number #3" and we raised our hand. With a loud voice she says, you cannot sit there thats not our patio!" My response, was equally rude "We're not moving! Other people from the Vietnamese restaurant were sitting in the Coconut cafe section!" The audacity and rudeness was shocking. Who trained her!?! Happy to share the name of the staff member in a private message to save her the embarrassment. I called the manager and requested my $10 tip / gratuity be refunded which she returned. However she didn't even apologize for the staff member's rudeness and lack of customer service skills! Let this be a lesson to her! You don't treat customers like that. And don't worry about where people sit down to eat when BOTH your company and the other company DO NOT HAVE A SIGN properly marking where people should sit in the patio. Geez ridiculous. We won't be back!

Kim O.

Yelp
I've been coming to my favorite restaurant for years & can't wait to come back!!! They never miss!!! The flavor of the Coconut Shrimp & Chips (Fries) is.... I'm speechless!!! I'd argue you're not going to find better coconut shrimp in the whole world. I'm always asked where's the best place to get my favorite food - french fries - and the answer is here. The seasoning they put on them... I can never get enough (& the portions are large)! The service is impeccable! The staff are always so sweet & attentive!!! Between the music and the decorations (turtle mural & beach painted floor) you can forget you're in AZ for a meal! Highly recommend if you enjoy seafood!

Lauren L.

Yelp
Coconuts fish cafe is originated in Hawaii and they have a-couple of locations around the island... I'm glad they've started to expand around. Food is really fresh and delicious. This place is unique because you don't see very many Hawaiian cuisine places in phoenix. This one is worth a visit!! *always remember to check in on yelp... they normally have great discounts or free appetizers* *you can ask them to sub for brown rice if you prefer that * *Blackened mahi mahi w brown rice + coleslaw = fish is so tender & not dry, flavorful, loved the blackened touch 9/10 *Mahi mahi tacos= mango is a perfect refreshing touch, packed w flavor, loved the slaw 9/10 *Macadamia Nut Mahi Mahi sub brown rice=loved the thick nutty crust, a tad bit dry 8/10 *Coconut Shrimp= crispy, hot & fresh, sweet & spicy sauce pairs great with it 8.5/10 Check out this place super delicious & fresh!!

Miki S.

Yelp
Surprise! Surprise! Last Friday before Easter, so fish is the answer. I yelped and found this restaurant. It is like islander type of food. Like Hawaiian something like that. I LOVE my fish taco mountain My husband got a fish and chips. French fries are great. I kept stealing his. They have many spicy sauce container option at the restaurant. All great Can't wait to go back and order other stuff

Devyn W.

Yelp
I always forget about this place and then binge order it after craving fish tacos. Currently waiting for delivery and was reading reviews to see if I wanted to try something new. I love this place more just based on the fact that they respond to negative reviews like a boss. I wish every business owner could respond to crazy negative reviews like them! Other than that the fish tacos and the coconut shrimp are amazing. Hoping the pasta is just as good when it gets here!

Michael R.

Yelp
This place used to be much better. Our last time here the two plates we got to go tasted really off and odd. We threw out our food at home. Service was unpleasant. Not sure what happened.

Sheila W.

Yelp
We've been back many times and continue to enjoy the food. And then one day the place was gone!!! The entire plaza was gone and there's new construction there. We searched and found the new location on Mayo Blvd. and made our way over there. The new location offers the same delicious food and great service. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. The decor is the same as the previous location. We were very happy that we found them.

Adrienne P.

Yelp
A wonderful seafood restaurant out of Maui. I love the taco tower or taco salad served by friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend!

Mike B.

Yelp
Since Yelp removed my review because I did it under my business I am adding another review for Coconuts. This place is great. We love their fish tacos and their poki salad. Everything is fresh and always a smile on the faces of the kids. I highly recommend.

Erica F.

Yelp
I had a high expectation because of all the good reviews. However, I am a bit disappointed. I ordered fish and chips, and coconut shrimp. The fish was over cooked. It was a bit dry and the taste was blended. The fries was very skinny, they did not look anything like the traditional fish and chips. The coconut shrimp taste pretty good, and they pair with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. They were a good match! Plenty of parking spaces. Staff was friendly.

Bruce B.

Yelp
I'm not sure what all changed from the previous location but the new one just isn't the same. The vibe is off, less alive than it used to be and the super friendly and stable workers are all gone, replaced with what seems to be a rotating staff that meets the minimums but no real delighters. As for the food, it has been a little hit and miss too. No idea what changed but it just isn't quite the same. Last time in the mahi fillet was excellent so hopefully that will continue but some of the previous fillets have been questionable, even sending one back which I don't usually do.

Maryellen S.

Yelp
I love Coconut's and was glad to see they survived the pandemic. The service is always friendly and usually fast. When there's a delay, they'll come to your table and give you an update. The fish tacos are amazing a must-try. But truly, all the food here is very good and reasonably priced compared to other fish restaurants in the area.

Beau B.

Yelp
Where to start ... They are within walking distance of where I live. The staff is always friendly, no matter what day or time you come....Or is it just my attitude or a bit of both. A relax setting for a bite of wonderful comfort food. Salut!

Tawna D.

Yelp
Rally good food. Their blackened fish and coconut shrimp are really good. The location in Chandler shut down so we drove all the way to Scottsdale to eat. It was worth it!

Michell B.

Yelp
Yelped and found this place. Visiting from Irivne California. Fries were soooo yummy! String, hot fresh and cooked to perfection. We had the macadamia mahi-mahi and fish tacos!! Amazing!! Great chill Hawaiian ambiance! Highly recommend!!!

Heidi M.

Yelp
I've been here about 10 times! I love the tacos and fish and chips....When you order the tacos , one order gives you two tacos on two different plates ...not sure why that's how you get it! I recently I've been enjoying their Poki bowl as good if not better than poke spots around town. Large portion and very delicious! Of all the meals I've had I can tell you they use fresh ingredients! Friendly staff, clean bathrooms and overall a clean establishment. Nice outside seating area with misters and also seating side area outside without misters on those cooler days. I only wish I could bring my doggy and sit outside and no pets allowed:(

Briana B.

Yelp
Don't expect fine dining at a fast casual restaurant. Simple concept and menu. The food is not exquisite but it will satisfy a fish taco craving. Wouldn't go out of my way to return but wouldn't be opposed to a lunch by invite.

Traci S.

Yelp
What great ambience! While this isn't what I would consider "traditional" Hawaiian fare, I was very impressed! I ordered fish tacos, someone else ordered the poke bowl, someone ordered the fried fish and chips, and we had the calamari appetizer. Let's start with the calamari: they don't get the tentacles, they get the meat and it is SO good! The fish tacos? Also SO good! I could have eaten just one and been happy. The mango salsa is a great complement to the taco. And the poke bowl? Holy poke! I wasn't a fan of poke when I lived in Hawaii, but this bowl is beyond! The flavor of the poke is on point, and the bowl itself is very fresh -definitely recommend! The food is great, and the staff is great. I would definitely go here again!

Dani L.

Yelp
Great food consistently great service the staff is super nice and so friendly. Love going here as it brings us back to Maui. Thank you for keeping coconuts in AZ! Open more pls
