"This husband-and-wife shop sits in a strip mall in Wilmington, just north of Boston. Despite being in just its second year of operation as a brick-and-mortar shop, Code 1 BBQ has won the hearts and minds of the locals. It’s known for its succulent pork belly finished on the flattop grill with a touch of maple syrup, as well as a tender brisket that melts in the mouth." - Valerie Li Stack, Rachel Leah Blumenthal

This place is an absolute GEM. I drove all the way from Boston to try Code 1 BBQ, and let me tell you — it was 1000% worth it. I had the brisket sandwich with extra brisket on side and OH MY GOD!!!!, the brisket literally melted in my mouth. Juicy, tender, smoky perfection, soft, absolutely unreal. I almost ate my fingers, no joke. Hands down the best BBQ I’ve had outside of Texas — honestly, it brought me right back to those southern BBQ joints. What made it even more special was the people — the family running this place are some of the nicest folks I’ve met. They made me feel truly welcome, and even surprised me with a gift card since I came from Boston. If you’re anywhere in Massachusetts and love real BBQ, make the trip. Code 1 is the real deal. Already planning my next visit — this place has my heart (and my stomach). 🔥🐖💯

Forgot to snap a photo before digging in! So delicious. My husband grabbed takeout and said the place smelled incredible. We shared a combo meal with brisket, pulled pork, mac n cheese and Brussels. You can choose if you want lean or fatty brisket. We opted for lean and it was so tender and flavorful. Right amount of smoke. Sauce has the perfect amount of tang. Mac n cheese was good and the Brussels were STELLAR. Cooked perfectly with bacon in a maple glaze. Cornbread had a golden bottom with a slight smoke flavor so good! Stop in here!

I ordered 2 brisket sandwiches, having seen all the good reviews I was hoping for something great… I was very disappointed to see my $17 sandwich had 6 small pieces of bland, dry brisket. Living in local to the area and wanting to try something different near by, I would still 1000% rather go to Northeast smokehouse (another bbq joint nearby) . Better portions for your dollar, better service, better tasting too. I also never leave reviews, but i was so ticked off i spent $35 on $5 worth of meat and $3worth of bread. Do better.

Google
Such good food and kind staff! I came in for lunch/dinner and I got a pork belly sandwich and the loaded brisket fries. It was all so delicious and flavorful. The Texas red bbq sauce was my favorite. The staff were super helpful and attentive and I’ll definitely be back again! I think the loaded fries were a special but I hope they get added to the regular menu.

Google
Everything was good but the beef rib is insane. We didn’t get to try the pork ribs or pork belly because they were sold out but we re definitely coming back earlier next time to snag some. Owners are super friendly and hard working veterans, all the sides were delicious. The cornbread was moist, the pickled onions were chefs kiss, the mash had nice chunks in it that we love, and the collards were tasty too.

Google
Texas BBQ has arrived in Massachusetts! Beef rib was awesome! Actually, everything was over the top! The beef rib I reserved ahead was humongous!

Google
First when I walk in, it was half empty; so you would think the waiting time wouldn’t be long. I waited an hour and thirty minutes for half a rack of ribs, a small portion of mac and cheese and rice and beans on the side and I already payed once ordered so I had to wait on it. At least if it was gonna take that long I’d expect it to be the best meal I’ve ever had (it wasn’t). It was so flavorless. No seasoning, sauce, nothing. Those ribs were the most blandest thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. My grandma can make better ones at home. It was just straight meat with some salt and pepper MAYBE. The mac and cheese it did its job but it was cold and very unsatisfying. The rice and beans the same thing it did its job but yet the flavor isn’t there and its cold. I’m really disappointed I spent my money eating a meal here. Truly disgusting.

Google
The food was delicious and perfectly cooked. We got brisket and ribs with sides. The Brussels sprouts were the best I ever had. Staff was friendly, and very accommodating to my food allergies. A bit pricey, but worth it

Yelp
Brisket and burnt ends looked and smelled tasty, but was overwhelmed by strong metallic taste..ruined it for everything they touched... Mac&Cheese seemed from box no social taste.. so so garlic and cheese mashed... collards needed to simmer and cook more.beans had strong taste of ketchup... but spicey.. Yes pricey for 2x "meats and 2 sides combos" with 3 extra sides... $130+... oh well, maybe an off night.. will trying much earlier to see if taste persists...but won't be for a while..

Yelp
Stopped in yesterday and had the brisket burger. Added a fried egg and bacon........this is the best burger hands down in Wilmington! She had the Mac and cheese. It's good, definitely has that homemade charm to it. Service is absolutely perfect for a small bbq restaurant. It cozy and the employees exemplify that, expect to be chatted up some while you wait. We will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
Food awesome...if they r open, taking orders, update their website. Dropping in works but around July 4th, no answer, not open sign on door but phone voicemail not updated. Didn't like cowboy corn relish. Missed my cornbread! But brisket 5*. No seating to eat, just waiting chairs.

Yelp
Tried a new place in Wilmington, that I heard does a decent job with BBQ. Small place in a strip mall. Was about 40 min before they were closing and we asked if it was too late and they were fine with us coming in. They advised what they had for meats and sides available. After some thought, we looked at getting a two meat/2 side platter. The coat seemed a bit rich @ $34 each, but we wanted to give it a try. When we asked if we could get beef ribs, since they originally pushed them, they advised they could, but it would be a $20 up charge. So a 2 meat, 2 side platter is now $54 a person. What? Kind of absurd. We decided to instead try the brisket on a sandwich instead and if good, come back and get something more intense. A round roll sandwich that had 5-6 pieces of brisket a little cheese and buttered was $17 bucks. Not cheap but decent. Unfortunately the meat was unremarkable. Lacked a deep smokey taste and was not even warm. Glad we changed our mind before we invested serious cash for something that may have been mid at best. Probably won't be going back. Not worth the gamble to get something that may be different. Vibe was also kind of off in the place too. Since it is close to Northeast BBQ in Billerica, will drive a little further and get better quality food and more of it for a better price. Disappointed and unimpressed.

Yelp
The only option you have in Wilmington. Food is mediocre and of course expensive because it's the only place in Wilmington that sells bbq. The price on the website is incorrect. I ordered 4 meats/3 sides which prices $45.99 on the website but it's actually $97! I will not come back and will not recommend

Yelp
Solid BBQ spot in Wilmington. Grabbed a family meal to enjoy with the gang while we watched the Celtics at home. Code 1 is basically takeout only. Online ordering was easy and they were friendly and had things ready to go when I showed up. A veteran owned business with a cool story about the name. The food was good, as we tried a little bit of everything. The ribs (regular pork ribs, not baby back) were excellent. Good rub and smoke and didn't really need any sauce. Brisket was also good. Pulled pork was solid but not spectacular and the pulled chicken was just ok. Sides wise really liked the Cole slaw and potato salad along with the pickled onions. Baked beans were a plus. Brussels sprouts were so so. Came with a trio sauces -- Alabama white, which i had never had before so can't compare it to anything but I liked it. Texas red was a more traditional bbq sauce. the Carolina cold had a good mustardy tang to it. The banana pudding for dessert was fantastic. The did forget the corn bread in the order but not the end of the world. Overall a very good bbq option in the area. Its not quite BTs smokehouse but not much is!

Andrew C.

Yelp
Excellent bbq and sides. Had brisket with Mac and collards. Yelp says it's closed right now but that's not true. Some kind of patio would really take it to the next level.

Frankie C.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I have never had a moist brisket like that before. It fell apart in my mouth. I will be back! This place needs more exposure. Bar stool needs to come here and review it. Best brisket I've ever had besides the ones my husband smokes loved the food!

Bobby W.

Yelp
A small shop with a very solid, basic barbecue menu and everything is done, right, in house, every day. It's hard to find a good barbecue in the north. Code 1 is a welcome exception. They only have four tables you pass through the stockroom to get to the bathroom and you can see every single thing they're doing. In my book for a barbecue joint that's a plus because every inch of that place just screams that they are passionate about what they do and it shows. A Hidden gem this is easily my favorite new discovery in six months

Yelp
TLDR - Food is 2/5 stars, Erica's (Owner) customer service 2/5 stars, Sean's (Owner) customer service 4/5 stars Be careful of rude responses from Erica. The food was good but unfortunately not great. The more BBQ places you try the pickier you become; especially when comparing the limited options around MA...but Code 1 manages to fit in just fine. They aren't the best but there's plenty to like from this establishment. The location isn't the most convenient for me and there are other good bbq places near my home so I wouldn't go back unless I'm in the area or seriously craving it. We ordered the Sampler Dinner (Brussels and Collard sides), a 2-meat combo dinner (Corn salad and Coleslaw side), PB and Mac attack 16oz, Baked Beans 8oz and a Pork Belly Sandwich. Overall with tax and tip about $125. Pros: -Beef Brisket was juicy and they ask if you prefer fatty or lean. -Pork belly has great flavoring, off the menu item -Lots of variety for the sides -Red sauce is on point, not too sweet and has a nice sticky texture Cons: -Prices are a bit steep, for the portion sizes that they give I wouldn't call it the best value. -We were third in line but they messed up prioritizing which orders to make first so people that came after us got potato salad and by the time they got to our order they ran out. -They're new and still working out small business woes, they weren't open at 12:00 so we had to come back at 2:00. They also ran out of many items on the menu including beef ribs, corn bread, potato salad, Roasted potatoes, roasted carrots, and brisket chili. -Some of the meats needed more seasoning and smoking. The ribs in particular lacked a nice bark or coating of dry rub. There was some but overall it could've been more flavorful. -A 2-meat combo dinner for brisket and pork ribs came with the same amount of beef and pork ribs as the sampler. The 2-meat dinner is 27.99 but for 29.99 in the sampler you also get a quarter of chicken and a good amount of pulled pork too so the 2-meat combo was not worth the price. -It was a little disappointing that we were one of the first customers for the day and ordered the pork belly sandwich when no one else did then after we ordered they proceeded to offer people free samples of it. This was offered free to everyone there except us... -Mainly takeout, inside is quite small -Rude responses received from one of the owners, Erica. Very bad customer service. At first I said despite the gripes I would give it a try again at a much later date but then Erica went in on a rude tirade over social media. Again it's good but just wasn't amazing and for the price, I expected more.

Yelp
First time try. Ordered online, picked order up with no issues (forgot I ordered something and they called house line not cell to remind me). Food was tasty, need to experience more if the menu and go there on a Friday and not the day before they close for the day ( Sunday) not much of an area to sit and wait, but it was delivered without much of a wait.

Roderick W.

Yelp
When I tell you that this was the absolute best food I EVER tasted while I was in the New England Area, I aint lying! Being from the South I believe that I am a connoisseur of good BBQ, and I will say....... THIS IS GOOD BBQ! It was so good I wanted to slap somebody's Mama! (I wasn't gonna slap mine, just cause the food good, I ain't no fool, haha)

Yelp
Good location, great vibe. Hell of a menu. Here we go Ribs are excellent. Looked perfect. Great rub with that cracked black herb and sweet brown sugar and good mix of red spices. The sweetness is prominent but the savory is still in there. Awesome smoke ring, don't care if you don't care about it. Pork flavor, moisture, and tenderness was on point. Excellent ribs. Brisket was probably what most people want in a brisket. Smokey and beefy. I really enjoy the overuse of a nice Brisket rub with the black pepper. The rub is definitely there on code one's brisket and it's great. I'm just weird. Excellent smoke ring again. First time I've ever been asked "lean or moist" for the cut preference. Thought that was funny. Usually it's "lean or fatty" or "flat or point" or something like that. Pulled pork was very very good. Moisture, seasoning, pork flavor and texture. Spot on! Not much fat chunks in there. Very good pulled pork Mac and cheese was disappointing. Just boiled pasta and some cheddar sauce. Turns into this peanut butter texture in your mouth. Baked beans were the perfect texture, the gravy was thick and not drippy. But the flavor was lost. It tasted more like a tomato paste that had some mild but familiar seasoning in it. Sauces: Alabama White was good but ... it's not like any other Alabama white I've ever had. It was more like a sour cream and onion dip flavor if it had a bunch of sugar in it. Texas Red was very unique. Very good sweet sauce if you're into that. Think there's pineapple or mango or both going on in there. Carolina gold: I love a gold sauce. This is yellow mustard with maybe a pinch of sugar. All in all it's really good bbq. Sides could use some work but there's like 10 other options to pick from.

Yelp
The brisket is very good, but the pork belly stole the show for me. I had collard greens and beans which were both delicious. It is a little pricey but most good BBQ is these days. Friendly staff. Will definitely be recommending this place.

John S.

Yelp
Very nice and friendly staff/owners. Still in their first year of business but what they lack in experience they make for with care and effort. The BBQ was very good. The pulled pork sandwich with a side of cheesy grits were loved. The pork ribs (excellent) were tender with a nice smoke taste seasoned with lots of pepper. Sauce served on the side. Three sauces to choose from. The cheesy smashed potatoes were bland as others noted, the beans were tangy, though personally I prefer sweet they were still good. Small dining area with 3 tables so mostly a takeout spot but we dined in and enjoyed conversing with the staff. Glad we tried Code 1, they fit the Air Force meaning. We'll be back.

Brianna S.

Yelp
This place has potential, but not quite there yet. Pros: -kind staff. -tidy eating tables -the young man answering the phone displayed top notch glove skills. Very clean! -large meat portions. I also liked that they asked if you wanted lean, fatty + lean, or a fatty cut of brisket. Improvement areas: -flavor profile: The mac and cheese was lacking even salt and pepper. Additional spices or cheeses would make it better. The greens were okaaay, but again, more depth with the flavors was needed. The greens had bacon; I would have preferred smoked Turkey or ham hocks for more flavor. - cold sauces: this is a pet peeve of mine, but it makes a huge difference. If there was warm sauce or even room temp sauce to drizzle over the meets that would be better. - the brisket was decent. The large portion is what saved it. For rating reference, I rate the following local places 5 stars: The Rusty Can in Byfield, The Pit Stop in Mattapan, & Sweet Cheeks in Fenway.

Yelp
I was supper excited to try this new place out. It's so hard to find great BBQ locally. After a few failed attempts to eat here, I finally got to try it this past week and sadly fell flat on me. Brisket was moist and cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. This became a theme. Rice and beans, very bland Mac and cheese was excellent, full flavor and consistency! Best thing we tried. Corn bread, small dry, lacked flavor. Collard greens, cooked well, but again bland. Sheet cake was awesome, very rich. I will 100% give them a second shot in hopes that maybe it was just a bad day.

Huy N.

Yelp
Good food and kind staffs! Will definitely be back a lot more. Code 1 BBQ puts a lot of care into their food and services that you can taste and see. Tried their Steve Bowl, regular bowl, brisket burger, and peach pie and all of them were amazing. I love how you can choose fatty/leaner side of meat should you want to. And the consistency is top notch! Been there a few times and the meat was amazing all the time! Love their red sauce, nice and sweet goes so well with the brisket. But I gotta say their pork belly is AMAZING. Nice crunch on the outside but every bite is a burst of goodness. Get them early by themselves or in the Steve Bowl cause those gone fast! I usually do take out but they do have some tables inside should you want to dine in. Small place but nicely decorated and the staffs are extremely friendly! Highly recommended BBQ place in the area!

Benjamin P.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. No way this place has 4.8 stars. The worst barbecue I've ever had. Not only did they forget our pork belly slices, but the ribs had no flavour. Had 0 seasoning. The chicken wings were raw. Looks like they we're just boiled for 2 min and tossed on a plate. No way they are selling inedible chicken wings like this. Someone can really get sick. We paid $90 for this, almost tempted to dispute the charges with my bank.

Brenda L.

Yelp
It would have been nice to try this place. Walked in on a dead Saturday. Place is cluttered and could use some cleanup. Tried to order several meals with sides, only to be told 5 times that they were out of a certain item. I walked out. At that point it would have been easier to tell me what the DID have. Here's a business tip, when you post a menu, realize that people are going to rely on your offerings. Recommendation to people wanting to try this place, call ahead to see what they felt like sourcing and cooking that day. It's a good thing the sign on the building is temporary. They're not gonna be there long.

Christopher G.

Yelp
This place is delicious and the staff is great. Friendly and welcoming, tried them out with the wife and had a good meal. I tried the grilled cheese with brisket with cheesy grits and Mac and cheese, all fantastic. They definitely make their food with taste in mind and they succeed. Good spot to get great food, I recommend them for sure. Update-Have had this food two more times, the taste and quality has not changed. Consistency is important and this place nails it. Well worth the trip because you are getting a good meal. If your local, try it and if you want yummy barbecue take the trip. Good eats and the quality shows.

Stephen B.

Yelp
I never write reviews for restaurants but after trying Code 1 BBQ I had to let others know what they might be missing out on. Hands down the Best BBQ restaurant around! Regardless of what you order you will NOT be disappointed! I order out from Code 1 BBQ at leeast 2 twice a week! There food is OUT of this world! Family owned and operated. Shawn & his wife Erica and their whole staff are truly amazing! I promise you you will not be disappointed! I Highly recommend stopping in!

Devin R.

Yelp
Excellent food. The pulled pork and brisket were tender and flavorful. The staff was super friendly and gracious. Will definitely come back.

Mark V.

Yelp
The The Big google.com We went to this place to try the Brisket pulled pork and side mac and cheese pretty and corn bread. Pretty standard for any barbecue if down south usually the have hush puppies but not so much up here New England. Well we went to order they were out of all the meats but brisket. I like the brisket but very disappointment they had no other meats they ran out. NOTE it's 4:30 pm right around dinner time. Next I ordered 3 brisket meals and corn bread and mac cheese and bake beans. Also I asked for some sweet barbecue sauce pretty clear on this since they did not ask me. Also there is typically no sauce on brisket which at most barbecue places also you can try the sauce you like. Well I asked for sweet barbecue sauce I got hot mustard sauce. Should have checked the bag before leaving but this is a standard to order with brisket thought would have been correct. Well like my barbecue I had some sweet baby rays at home save my $80 worth of barbecue. Yikes that's expensive. well the food was good but over priced not first impression won't be back and I live in Tewksbury could have been regular but hope this helps them step it up.

Cheryl H.

Yelp
We got the family dinner. The meat was really good, loved it , my only things were the sides mashed potatoes should be real potatoes not instant. We were very disappointed, and the portions of the sides I could only feed a few kids . Don't get me wrong, the meats were really good . Instant mashed potatoes NO NO NO

Owen B.

Yelp
The food was awesome. Service was good, ambiance was okay very small place if you want to eat at the restaurant there are only a few tables. If you like bbq this is the place to go!

Ben D.

Yelp
This place made me and my freinds a true BBQ feast. The two poeple working there were so nice to us. In particular, The mashed sweet potatoes were so epic. Creamy and sweet.

J C.

Yelp
Sorry to say thumbs down. I would have loved a good bbq place in town. However, it just wasn't. Bland and dry food and bits of meat not slices. They don't seem to know how to prioritize. People who come in after and order get what I ordered but I didn't. :-( Total lack of empathy. Overpriced, small portions. Never again... I also noticed a lot of excuses on others not so good reviews.

Danielle L.

Yelp
Underwhelming. I was so excited to see bbq in my town, but alas. Brisket was bits, not slices, as I would have liked. Maybe it was because we ordered late in the day and got less choice remnants? Sides (various vegetables) were very bland.

Mike G.

Yelp
Fantastic barbecue! The brisket, burnt ends, beef ribs and trio of sauces are excellent. I'm so glad I have this option so close to work. I was going to the Rusty Can....which is also excellent but I give the edge to Code 1.

Ellen H.

Yelp
Sorry but total lack of flavor on the brisket sandwich. Rolls were pretty good. Macaroni and cheese also lacked flavor. Presentation lacking.

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Third time visiting code 1 and it did not disappoint!!! The owners always have a smile and treat you like family. The food was delicious. Ribs were so tender they fell right off the bone! The brisket was also wonderful and they give you an option for it to be lean or have more fat. Sides are also always amazing!

Jay S.

Yelp
Also don't usually leave reviews, but stopped in here to grab something to eat on way home from TH. Selection was limited as we were there right before closing, but everyone was super nice and accommodating. Ended up grabbing some smoked Turkey, pulled pork, beef rib, and even some brisket after they said they had run out. Food was top notch - all the meats had great flavor and were super moist. Brisket is what I judge for good bbq - this place is close to BT's, and far exceeds Redbones, BlueRibbon and even Sweet cheeks. Great job and keep doing what you are doing, we will def be stopping frequently. Thank you.

Hung M.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and got the brisket sandwich. You know it's legit when they ask you whether you want lean, fatty, or medium cuts. I got the medium and it was the best brisket I've ever had. Looking forward to trying the other items.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
There is not a lot of good BBQ in the area, so when I saw Code 1 BBQ pop up in the area, I just had to try it. The food was a very pleasant surprise. We got a 3 meat sampler with the Brisket, Pork Ribs and Pulled Pork, with Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes as sides. Got a solid portion of the meats, all well cooked and very tasty, especially with the variety of sauces offered. My only gripe is that you should get maybe one more side with the 3 meat sampler, or larger sides. Other than that I'd definitely recommend Code 1 and plan on coming back to check out the beef ribs and wings soon.

Meghan H.

Yelp
My husband and I just wanted something different for dinner instead of pizza, a sub, pasta, or another pizza but I also did not want to cook. I contacted Code 1 BBQ and spoke to Erica, who was very friendly in helping me decide from their options. I also met Sean who was very personable and I instantly knew these two put their heart and hard work into this business venture. We bought a full chicken, Mac and Cheese, Brussels and Bacon, and cornbread. It was all wonderful and the portions were amazing. We both have enough for lunch tomorrow :) The chicken was tasty and cooked to perfection, the M&C was soooo cheesy and creamy, Brussel Sprouts were slightly charred which is how we like them. And the cornbread came in easy to eat muffin sizes and had a very tasty middle. Thank you, Code 1 BBQ for a spectacular dinner (and lunch). We will be back to try more.

Carol A.

Yelp
What a Gem. The meats are just beyond delicious and the sides are all home made. I am a bbqe follower and this is the best thus far. 'the Brisket is 10 star perfect and the staff and owners are great. Making this my go to :)

Chris F.

Yelp
Fabulous BBQ. Owners were exceptional! Reminds me of my trip to Texas! Looking forward to my return visit!

John B.

Yelp
I just wanted to say that I have eaten at some bbq places but Code 1 was just far and away best bbq I have ever had. My sons graduated and love bbq and we have never been to code 1. We got Mac and cheese, beef brisket, pulled pork and garlic mashed potatoes and everyone loved it and every plate was clean. Their sauces are the best I have ever had. The staff was very friendly and owner Erika was great and accommodating with the short notice I gave them. This place should be on everyone's list to try and I guarantee you will go back again. Keep up the great work and thank you so much for making a special day even more special with your amazing food and service.

Nancy D.

Yelp
Went for the first time tonight to celebrate a friend's birthday. The brisket was delicious, pulled pork and beef rib were just as good. The sides we had were mac & cheese, Brussels sprouts, beans and collard greens. The portions were quite large and we brought some home to have tomorrow. The staff and owner were very friendly and went out of their way to help us with the menu. We don't live close but will definitely be back.
