"Dogs are welcome both inside Cody’s Public House and on the retro Lakeview bar’s large patio. The space features plenty of seats, fire pits, bags, and darts along with affordable drinks, making it a great place to watch football or just pop in with the pooch when out for a walk through the neighborhood. They can have a pup cup or treat it as a reward for good behavior." - Sam Nelson

Google
This is a wonderful bar to hang out. It is a dive bar, with no food menu, so don't expect the world here. But you are allowed to bring in outside food, and there is free popcorn. The drinks are good and cheap. There is a patio that is amazing when the weather is good. There is a pool table and darts. And it is completely dog friendly, so there are always cute dogs around. My friends and I come here often, would recommend to anyone. There is free street parking around. I have never had an issue trying to find parking, but sometimes I need to walk a little bit. There is a step and no ramp to get into the place, so it is not handicap accessible.

Google
Went to Cody’s for the pong tournament and had a great time. The staff was very accommodating and the last review is from Noah… a guy that only comes online to dish out 1 star reviews. Total wet blanket.

Google
Fun local bar! Drinks flowing Friendly Faces Professional service! I had a flat tire and the Marvin and Antonio was quick to assist! Appreciate the concern! I look to come back not so stressed due to my flat! Will take an uber next time! The Bar is a vibe!

Google
I had the best time here! I originally showed up for a high noon tournament but i will be coming back just because. Popcorn is 12/10. vibes are 20/10. my dog is obsessed with this place and so am I.

Google
Great neighborhood corner bar. The patio is wonderful and has a bar that opens when it’s busy. Gets VERY crowded at night, but early on the vibes are chill. Free popcorn machine, and you can BYO food if you want. Note that it’s no longer cash only (ignore all the old reviews that say so, that was pre-pandemic, different owners).

Google
I just went and did their Easter Egg hunt and all the staff were super nice and friendly! It was awesome seeing so many dogs too! Highly recommend any of their events, or just as a place to grab a few drinks!

Google
Cody’s... For those that know, know. I’m just now finding out lol, this is the place to be. Service is so friendly and welcoming, starting with Antonio at the front door, then Marvin helping with a flat tire. Thx Free self-serve popcorn, beer garden, tv monitors, slots upstairs. Dog friendly which is something different however it works. They were civilized dogs. Everyone I experienced, came to have a good time. Good vibes only! Will return

Google
The staff is extremely unhelpful. They hosted a pong tournament. I called ahead 6 hours asking them how to sign up and they told me that you need to sign up in person. At the event. We showed up an hour early and asked multiple employees where to sign up and they all told us to wait for the tournament announcement. Then once it came time for the tournament the announcement was that sign ups were closed. I asked the manager Martin about it and he was extremely condescending and unhelpful. Will not be returning to Cody’s. It’s trash.

Yelp
This place is great!!! Very cool neighborhood place. Dogs everywhere, a fun crowd cheering and singing as they watched their Premier League team, and dartboards! We spent our visit on the back patio playing darts, petting a few pups and enjoying a beautiful day. Moved to Chicago 4 1/2 years ago and this is now my new favorite place!
google avatar

Yelp
Met up with friends and was pleasantly greeted by a dog. Any bar that allows in dogs in a five star establishment in my eyes. Drinks are cheaper than some of the other neighborhoods and you could help yourself to popcorn. It feels like a bar for locals and guests alike. There was a lower level that I didn't explore. Points off for service. The bar back seemed to have been over served and the bouncer was a little too rough to a patron who got hurt due to the bouncer's actions. I didn't see the lead up to the altercation, but it wasn't fun to witness.

Yelp
The best neighborhood bar! Great bartenders, dog friendly, great TV set up to watch big games, and a killer back patio. They do a ton of fun seasonal parties/events/fundraisers/etc. so there is always something going down at Cody's. The back patio is the best in the city with tons of tables, bags, dartboards, nd amazing outdoor TVs. There are grills you are free to use to cook up some food since they do not have a kitchen. Great side room that you can reserve for parties as well!
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Basic neighborhood bar that's a hangout for watching some games. Cody's is located in a pretty quiet area of Lakeview. It seems like most of what's around it is residential. For sure makes lots of sense if most patrons come from around it. This is kind of like going to a neighbor's backyard and having a party. At times it can be quiet, especially earlier. It's a good time though for checking out the bar itself. The bar is bigger than it looks, with back rooms for games, and a patio. It's about $7 for a basic cocktail. There's no kitchen but you can bring something to eat, and they have free popcorn. Also there's grills on the patio so you can even cook. They're also known for being dog friendly. Good place for a game. It only seems like it gets kind of packed at times with most knowing the bartenders pretty good so it can take a long time for someone else to order. They only have the popcorn, but you can bring in something from wherever.

Yelp
Practically an automatic 5 star for being (truly) dog-friendly. When an establishment in the Midwest claims to be dog-friendly because they have an outdoor patio... that's like 3 months of the year assuming it's not raining. So maybe 25% dog friendly? Cody's truly understands dog people and I absolutely love them for it. After a frustrating time of Googling dog friendly breweries/bars in Chicago only to find out that most of them only allowed dogs outside, I came across Cody's Public House. My pup and I stopped in close to when they opened, and had a good chunk of the bar to ourselves. We got to say hi to a few other pups, explore the place via all the smells, and drink great beer. My dog had a great time rolling on the floor -- his sign of approval. There were a few other people at the bar, and it seemed to be a neighborhood spot where people knew each other by name. It's largely surrounded by neighborhood, and I just love the hometown feel. Bartender was friendly and attentive, and the space itself is actually quite large. I will definitely be back next time I'm visiting Chicago. After all, these are clearly my people.
google avatar

Yelp
Love Cody's, such a chill place where dogs are welcome! Free popcorn and a great beer selection, lots of dart boards and a big outside area with lots of seating. Service is always great and the friendliest people! Good place to just chill and drink. TVs too to watch a game!

Yelp
I co hosted a surprise party for my best friend at this bar. Cody's Public House definitely nailed it!! The basement was a great venue for over thirty people. There was a great drink package for our guests. We ordered food from a local pizzeria for a buffet set up. There's a pool table and darts for entertainment needs and a modern jukebox. We all enjoyed the spacious outdoor patio with heat lamps. All in all it was a successful night and the birthday girl was very surprised! I was also impressed by the wall of adoptable dogs with QR codes ! There's a menu with a percentage of the proceeds that go towards a rescue. I'd definitely love to check this place out again! If you're looking for a great dog friendly bar; add this one to the list!
google avatar

Clayton C.

Yelp
The person who was mistakenly given my card returned it to the bar, and Cody's called me to resolve the situation. They didn't have to do that but as I said are nice people and we all make mistakes
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
You could hear the music and voices from a few blocks away. It looked as fratty as it sounded and sounded as fratty as it looked. The place was PACKED - if you're looking for a chill, diverse place to grab a drink, this is not it. If you're looking to relive your college days, come to Cody's!
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot. Very friendly and ALWAYS hosting fun events. Constantly improving the back patio (lighting, tvs etc). Dogs are welcome and they even have a 'dog of the month'. Grills in back are first come first serve I believe. Bags, darts, pool available and a few gaming systems in a side room. You can bring your own food/get delivery because there's no kitchen. Staff is nice! No complaints.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Cody's is a great time. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Although it can get very crowded on the weekends, if you can claim a spot by a dart board or the pool table, you won't want to leave. It's also worth mentioning that the back patio is a very chill vibe on summer nights. The only thing keeping me from giving Cody's 5 stars is that if you go earlier in the day, you will find adults who bring their children who will often times run around unattended. Cody's is also pet friendly which is awesome. However after having a few drinks, it becomes worrisome that you can easily step on some of the small dogs that are hard to spot. Overall, Cody's is great.

Yelp
What a great spot! We ended up here right when they opened one day while visiting from out of town. My husband had to take a work call & we had our dogs with us, so we quickly searched nearby dog friendly patios. Not only is their patio dog friendly, but the entire bar is! We are used to taking our dogs with us everywhere and were surprised by how many places do not accommodate in Chicago, but Cody's definitely does! Although they don't serve food, you can bring food in from other places. The bar is in a quiet neighborhood and the patio is enclosed so it does not feel like you're in the city. There was tons of space, different levels of shade covering, and games to play back there. Inside there is a pool table and plenty of bar seating. We had a great time going between the patio and inside the bar during the (many) hours we spent there. Our bartender was great and prices were super reasonable, especially considering how long we were there! We ended up purchasing some hats and shirts (they have a killer merch selection) and will be proudly repping Cody's down south. Hidden gem for sure.

Yelp
Johnny made my entire life. Best bartender of all time. His skills are only exceeded by his looks. I will be back.
google avatar

Ella W.

Yelp
Cody's will definitely be a spot for us! Since we had our dog we have made it a point to try to bring him out whenever/wherever we can! He loves to party too! So when it was his birthday it was imperative that we had a little shindig for him. Cody's offers a dog friendly environment that dog parents can also enjoy themselves in! We were able to bring our own food in and had drinks with all of our dog friends! Would highly recommend!
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
No food but they do have free popcorn! Cody's is a great local spot that offers indoor and outdoor seating. The prices are decent and there are plenty of TVs out back for watching sports games. Cody's is also dog friendly, which is great if you have a pup (but can be a little annoying at times when people let their dogs off leash). Worth giving Cody's a shot if you're in the area.

Nathan D.

Yelp
Great local spot but Jesus Christ can they turn the music down a little. Its a dive bar not a club
google avatar

Susan W.

Yelp
Dangerous patio landscape. At least five people fell Saturday and no acknowledgement from staff, mgmt.

Annie G.

Yelp
Such a fun bar! Every time I've been the ambiance has been great. They have pool, darts, and corn hole to play. The patio area is huge and even has grills for people to use at no cost. Super dog-friendly and a great BYOF place. I had reserved some tables and the bar was very accommodating! It's the perfect place to chill with friends. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fun bar! Oh, and there's FREE popcorn.

Rich B.

Yelp
Great place to hang out and watch college football on a fall Saturday. No food, but they allow you to bring food in, great idea.
google avatar

Asil A.

Yelp
Nice place to come hang out and play pool and darts. It's a bit small and the music is very loud, but the staff is great. They don't play UFC fights or serve food which is another down side. But you can bring your pup!

Jay L.

Yelp
Usually they are a great spot. Tonight tried to overcharge me 2 drinks and then got upset that I was challenging them over 2 drinks.

A A.

Yelp
Love Cody's, but PLEA TO THE OWNERS... please ban cigarettes/cigars on the patio. You can't hide from it when someone steps out. Ruins the patio.

Jason N.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot! My guests and I had a wonderful time here in a laid back atmosphere. Give it a whirl!
google avatar

Joel G.

Yelp
Great place to hang out and have some drinks. Even better cuz the dogs!! I heard the July dog if they month is amazing!!

Riley C.

Yelp
Visited Cody's last night for the first time and the bartenders were so rude to myself and the people I was with. We don't intend on coming back
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood hang out even if you don't live in the neighborhood. Dog friendly. Great bartenders. Went there for a friends birthday over the weekend and it was nice, non pretentious, and overall fun.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I love going to this bar because it's just around the corner from us. It's one of those Chicago bars that are nestled into a neighborhood on the corner surrounded by residential buildings. There are dart boards everywhere and a pretty big patio area. Cash only but there's an ATM, and also a juke box with some pretty good selections. You can also bring takeout food here. THIS PLACE IS DOG FRIENDLY so you see a lot of good boys there. There's a golden doodle named bear hanging out every time I've been. Why I give this place 4 stars and not 5 is because it kinda smells, the only time music is playing is when someone is paying for it so there's times where it sits quiet. This place is definitely a dive so don't expect too much glitz.
google avatar

Yelp
Cody's should be called " a$$H0|es" because every time We've gone in there with our nice bulldogs, mind you, it was 3:30pm on a Tuesday with our 2 bulldogs and my husband and I ( that's it totally dead no one else in the bar) dogs on leashes in the back outside just us.... and he came out and yelled at us because one of our leashes broke/ slipped off her head ....we apologized and put it back on her head and he said " get the F out" so I had my husband hold my sweet pup pups and got my money back for 4 miller high lifes and we left ..... these bull dogs could serve beer better than this guy.... good karma ... be nice to people that's it .....

Yelp
Where to begin. Besides the bartenders being insanely rude, the owner, tonight, physically assaulted one of my friends. We have been to Cody's tons of times. I can't even count the number of times we have been here. Thinking, we were OK, as we have done in the past, one of my friends took one of their fire pits (full of kindling and pizza boxes) and lit it, to set a light bonfire (note- we moved the pit away from structures and away from other patrons). It was us and another party of three guys, close to the doors, on the patio. After, the owner stomped out and exclaimed "you did not have permission!" (there was nothing indicating there needs to be permission.. No signs... Nothing.. And again, we have done this other times before with no issue). The owner picked out a pizza box out of the pit, picked up the grate, and a picked up piece of wood and threw them at my friend. To reiterate, the owner threw a piece of flaming wood and a pizza box and at my friend, hitting his feet and boxing him in a corner between a table and a counter/the fence. When my other friend asked for clarification and asked if he could help/started stomping out the fire to assist, he shoved that friend of mine. There were a total of 8 patrons in stunned silence watching as this went down. He didn't tell us why this time was different, didn't talk to us... Nothing. Just threw things at my friend and shoved another friend. The owner then, without fully putting the fire pit out, put the cover back on the fire pit (still smoldering) and went back inside. We were all super confused and I genuinely wish I could blame this bizzare course of actions on anyone in this story being absolutely hammered... Unfortunately we were all sober and really weirded out.

Yelp
Had the night of our lives at Cody's on 22-Nov-2019!!!!! Definitely NOT closed! The beer flowed like wine, can understand why they made the Chicago's city best list in 2008.

Andrew K.

Yelp
I really do wanna give this place 5 stars Bcs i have enjoyed coming here since it reopened but had a pretty frustrating experience recently. Basically on the weekends, virtually the entire bar is "reserved." Reservations range from the entire patio, the whole side room, to just a few tables here and there. But in one way or another, there was basically no place for just a regular walk in to sit. It's a neighborhood corner bar, not RPM... don't reserve away the ENTIRE place on the weekends. At the very least, CHARGE people for it. That's just good business sense. For a place that doesn't sell food, it's very very very annoying. We wanna go there, have some drinks and watch some games and there was like maybe 2 tables in the entire place that weren't under some form of reservation. Also, there old slot machines ripped me off for $25 when they wouldn't print my ticket and when i told the manager he basically shrugged and said "yea happened earlier this week." Uhhh then maybe unplug that slot machine so more of your customers don't get scammed????
google avatar

Yelp
Great bar for darts and cheap liquor (which is rare in Chicago). My friend and I were able to play free darts in this separate area uninterrupted for over an hour. No food, but you can UberEats/GrubHub anything in the area. The vibe was a little meh- older guys with their dogs laying around- bartenders weren't super thrilled to be here. Cash only, which is fine- but they don't allow you to run a tab so keep that in mind otherwise you'll be walking out with a roll of quarters.
google avatar

Bri A.

Yelp
I've been here a few times with friends and a pup in tow. We always have a good time, although service can be hit or miss. It's a chill little neighborhood dive with cheap drinks, pool and darts and dogs everywhere! Definitely not a place to hang if you're allergic or dislike dogs for some reason. I would come here just to drink and pet all of the dogs! The place is pretty big and they have a patio, although I've only come on cold days so I haven't checked it out. Cash only and they don't have food, but you're free to bring your own or wait to be graced by the Tamale Man's presence. I was here last weekend and surprised to see a lot of pups, despite the canine flu going around. They all seemed healthy though. I'd give this place four stars, but the two female bartenders were terrible. It was pretty packed and one was alone for a bit and spent more time looking for liquor bottles than making drinks. She may have been new and seemed overwhelmed, but she also wasn't paying attention to people at the bar. I was there before a few guys, but they were attended to first. The second one rolled her eyes and slammed down a cup of water when I asked for it. Hey it was the end of the night and I needed to hydrate myself!
google avatar

Karolina J.

Yelp
I really like Cody's because it's the closest bar that allows dogs! This bar is actually really big and although it is cash only, they have a bunch of good deals. I always come here when I just want to come to chill out and play darts, pool, or golden tee. They even have a large outdoor area where there are darts also. My dog is a fan too

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Today went to bar at 2:30 pm with my 2 pups to meet a friend--- only 2 in the bar for an hour!!! We decided to move outside and grabbed a new drink. We just settled on chairs outside and there was a loud noise which scared one of my pups and she barked 3 times-- immediately the owner came outside and said " no barking allowed you need to leave now" asked if we could finish new drink he said " NO absolutely not your dog barked and must leave immediately " The OWNER needs to either sell or let other bartenders run bar. WE are regulars and he has been grumpy in the past with others. Sadly I will never go into this bar again and give him any of my money!!! Dog friendly-- NO not when the owner is around.
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
What's not to like about a little neighborhood place that is so unassuming that you could drive right by even if you are looking for it? Upon entering- I actually wondered if I was in the wrong place? There is a large oak bar stretching along the right side of a large room. Also lots of tables scattered about with everyone eye's on this night, glued to the TV watching one of the presidential hopefuls tell his story. The lost look on my face prompted the bartender to yell out "You with a group? Probably out back!" Out back indeed. Push open the doors and you find yourself in a beer garden that is a cross between your neighbor's yard and that long, lost memory of that summer resort you visited as a kid. Darts, corn hole, graffiti walls, lots of tables, and grills to cook your own food (I'd love to try that sometime) took me back to those lazy days of Summer in Michigan. Service was self serve. The place is totally manned by two bartenders so if you want a drink you have to go inside which is a bit of a hassle but hey- it's just that kind of place. It's also a cash only kind of place so hit the ATM before getting too comfortable. Check it out. And enjoy a little bit of summer's past at Cody's.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Avoid! What I presume is the owner/bartender is dishonest and a liar. Held a Driver's license hostage and stole $15 from my friend for "not returning" darts when they were returned by another person in our group... had no regard to even discuss with us and would not even honestly answer if the darts were there or not. He is a scumbag and a fraud. Have heard others tell other stories of his deception and rudeness. Will never return.
google avatar

Ian S.

Yelp
Everything about this bar is great, except the incredibly rude owner. All the other bartenders are cool. He's aggressive, unfriendly & abrasive.
google avatar

Bobby C.

Yelp
It's places like this that make me miss the Midwest. If I didn't work in entertainment I would probably live in Chicago...And if I lived in Chicago I would try to live in a neighborhood that had a bar like this. It's a monstrous house with the downstairs being a bar. Old wood, open floor plan, but still piping out frigid AC in the humid September summer. TV's, dart boards, jukeboxes--all the dive bar ammenities. But the best featureis the outdoor wood deck that has room for 100 people. Not only do they have side by side competition dart boards, they also have a bean bag toss set up. Come on seriously?! It's the type of place you just won't find in LA, but in Chicago they are your average neighborhood spots. They don't take cards but the drinks are cheap and they have an ATM machine.
google avatar

Marjorie F.

Yelp
Decent beer selection + dog friendly + uber laid back atmosphere = My Kind of Place! My neighbor had been talking about this place for a while now. Finally, we had an excuse to take our pups here. It was City Dog Maggie's first birthday and I needed a place, other than my small city pad, to celebrate with my friends and their canine companions. Cody's was perfect. The bartender was not only friendly, but a dog-lover herself. Maggie and her BFF Lucy got a lot of love from other patrons. It was really hard not to like this place. There is a room off the side of the bar that was big enough for a group of my friends and their dogs. Unfortunately, we could not close the door and let the dogs roam off leash due to city ordinance. Too bad... While the weather is nice, it is worth the trek from my place to Cody's. Maggie and I will definitely be checking in here on our evening strolls!
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
The bartenders are extremely nice and the prices are good for the area. The outside patio is awesome.
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
This place is perfect for 30-45 year old dog lovers. Such a casual place, indoor/outdoor, tons of mutts, hipster denim style to business suits, cubs fans and parents, everyone is welcome. Employees seem grumpy to each other but nobody cares. Would do 5 stars if they were friendlier, but still an amazing place. All the customers mingle and socialize and have a great time. Plenty of space for everyone, and everyone pets your dog. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Aiden M.

Yelp
This is a pretty low key spot up north that's great for when you're looking for a casual day/night of drinking. They've got pool and darts. They are also dog friendly, which is of course a plus.
google avatar

Eddie J.

Yelp
The bar smells like spilled beer mixed with urinal cakes. And the ownership likes to get too much into the business of "patrons" in the streets around the bar instead of focusing on the issues like hygiene in the bar.... Beware of toxic smells in here
google avatar

Nhi N.

Yelp
The location is a bit out there...but I'm sure it's a go to neighborhood bar! Not much i can rave about this place, but one thing I noticed that I'm sure most people will love is it's dog-friendly. We showed up here after midnight, and I swear I saw at least 5 dogs. Will need to check out the beer garden when it's warmer.

Yelp
Cody's used to be my neighborhood bar when I lived in West Lakeview (is it still called that?) in the early 90s. I lived right across the street so it was practically my second home. Cheap drinks, laid-back atmosphere, outdoor beer garden and lots of dogs to pet. I made it back there again this past Saturday with a friend after a visit to Scooter's. There was nowhere to sit at Scooter's so we decided to mosy on down to Cody's for a drink. It was early in the afternoon when we arrived, so there was no one at the bar, but I'm sure the beer garden was plenty crowded. I'm not sure why we didn't take advantage of the gorgeous weather and sit out there too, but the inside was just as pleasant. We both are non-beer drinkers, so we ordered Woodpecker Cider - probably not the best choice after eating frozen custard, but it still hit the spot, and priced at $4.75, on par with similar places. Cody's doesn't really classify as a dive bar, but more of a relaxed hang-out. It's dog-friendly, as evidenced by all the pups hanging out wagging their tails, and you can even grill your own food outside. Cody's is a great neighborhood spot that's been here forever. I have a feeling that I'm going to be spending a lot of time here this summer.

Yelp
Lounging on the back patio was the perfect conclusion to the Beer Garden 2008 series... Spacious, comfortable, darts, bags, beer, grills (we shoulda brought meat!), the warm air, the epitome of summer sweetness. Looking to do a cheap(ish) party for a bunch of your friends? Bring all of your own food, hang out on the patio and soak it up! Tucked away just far enough off the beaten path to maintain a good vibe...the patio is where it's at. Go, before summer flees.

Yelp
Really 3.5. I really liked the place, the beer garden was huge. The problem was my vodka lemonades were pretty weak. The bartender was friendly, I just wish her pours had been too.

Yelp
Wowzers! It has taken me a long time to write this review! Cody's Public House closed out the 2008 Yelp Beer Garden series and was decided for the people, by the people. As this was a election year, the Yelpers voted on where to go and they chose Cody's. I liked several things about Cody's. It's a little off the beaten path, in fact you might miss it if you didn't know you were looking for it. They also allow dogs and several Yelpers were able to bring their pooches out to experience Yelp for the first time. The bar is very spacious with great indoor spaces and a wonderful secluded backyard patio that includes a grill and a few dart boards. There was one thing that I didn't like very much at all. The bartendress was pouring very week vodka tonics. So weak that I asked for a double vodka tonic. I watched her pour a regular (weak) drink and charged me double. Bad form. Really bad. Also, another member of our group asked for a tall mixed drink and received the same tiny sized glass that everyone else was drinking from. Was this just a case of a bad bartender? There is just too much to like about Cody's, but a bad bartender can ruin a great bar.
