Where to Find Barista Competition-Worthy Signature Coffee Drinks Around Los Angeles - Eater LA

"This Instagram friendly, plant-based cafe from three friends in a Pasadena courtyard features plenty of faux and real plants. Flowers even factor into signature drinks like the Rowl Bowl latte, named for the Crown City’s iconic stadium. Baristas somehow balance espresso with earthy beet juice, floral rose hibiscus syrup, and a choice of plant-based milk; I suggest almond. They garnish each cup - hot or iced - with fragrant rose petals. Better yet, Coffee + Plants is a mission-driven café that works with the National Forest Foundation to plant one tree for every 100 cups sold." - Joshua Lurie

Google
Great find! I’m not a fan of any rose-lavender-flavored lattes but the barista did mention that their rose syrup is house made and doesn’t have the artificial flavoring that most shops have. I took her word and gave it a try! Loved it. I had it hot but I’m sure iced would have been just as great. I also had their cherry almond muffin! Not a combination i would have ever tried so thanks for the new flavoring!I think the vibes could have been better but working in the customer service field, I’m too biased. Overall a solid experience.

Truly this place came through where it counts: after enjoying the Rose Parade on Jan. 1st with a friend, we were having a difficult time finding a place to sit. We had JUST placed ourselves in two different wait lists at two different restaurants, so while we waited, we wandered through Colorado Ave, looking for a place with shade and somewhere to sit. This place absolutely came through. They are in such a nice location. There are seats both inside and outside and also, despite being out of almost everything, I had one the best cups of hot cocoa with oat milk I've ever tried. Immensely grateful for the great customer service, great drink and much-needed place to sit with shade. 10/10

Google
The place itself and the person making the drinks was all cool, just the drinks itself were not good. My boyfriend and I got two different drinks and both were tasted like water down and no flavor. Pretty disappointing.

Google
I got the JustEgg tartine, chocolate croissant and lavender latte (pictured). It's a cute instagram-worthy place with good coffee, but the vegan food is not that good. The chocolate croissant was hard and not fluffy. Vegan croissants are difficult to find, and this one was disappointing. I don't remember much about the tartine. Come for the coffee and nice ambiance, not for the food.

Google
Unique menu with original drinks and pastries you won’t find in other cafes. I got almond butter cherry muffin and Dubai chocolate latte and both were incredible. The atmosphere is both grounding and elevated with plants giving it a cozy feel. The cafe is secluded in the alley and it gives it an European vibe. As I understood, everything was vegan and vegetarian, but I think you can get a whole milk option. Parking is in nearby structures and relatively cheap compared to other areas in the city. First 2 hours are free.

Google
This charming coffee shop boasts a delightful ambiance. I particularly enjoyed the atmosphere outside the café. Their signature 24k charcoal latte was a standout—unique and delicious. While the interior décor is pleasant, it shows signs of age. Nevertheless, the high-quality tableware, chairs, and tables more than make up for it. The prices are quite reasonable, too.

Google
Very nice café on a side street in Pasadena. The service was super nice and friendly. If you order something to eat, you should bring some time with you, as it is prepared with love and care. Unfortunately we didn't have a fork and knife, but they were brought on request. The food was delicious and so was the coffee. The whole thing is completely vegan!

Google
This is my first visit. I thought the coffee selection was unique and I tried something new. The location can be a little tricky to find because it is next to some construction on a one-way street. But of course like most areas in Los Angeles once you know where it is it’s not so hard to find the next time

Yelp
Came here today with my bestie and our fur babies on a Sunday Morning. Highly suggest coming in a Sunday. Street parking before 11am is free. No pay to park, 2 hour parking on Union Street. It's been a while since I last been here and it's just as amazing as I last remember! This time I came here to get my coffee fix, get my Pasadena Coffee Passport Stamped, and my best friend had yet to try this place out. Photo op worthy place along with plants to purchase as well! This time I ordered: - Iced Vanilla Latte with Oat-milk - Peach Please ( Lemonade) - Blueberry Muffin - Peperomia 'Ginny' Plant The drinks & food were delicious! The staff were very sweet! This place is dog friendly and had indoor/ outdoor seating :)

Yelp
Walked in and didn't see any plants at all. I was confused and wondered if there was more to the place that I was missing. Turns out they were out of stock of nearly everything but one small plant on the shelf. I then looked for coffee beans, which they had only one lonely bag (from another coffee company) sitting out there. I was super disappointed at the experience and it felt like I had wasted my time going there.
google avatar

Yelp
Most charming little cafe tucked in an alley way in Pasadena! Plenty of seating. Most of the plants are adoptable and this cafe sits next to a theater. Matcha Lavender gal, and wasn't disappointed!

Yelp
Ambiance: it's a cozy and chic small coffee place located in a small alley in Pasadena, with cute decorations and green plants, they don't have a restroom onsite and you have to go to the one located in the corner of the courtyard Service: friendly staff, helpful and attentive, accommodated special request for mugs instead of cups Drink: simple and classic drink menu, vegan options non diary only, like oat milk and almond milk Blue Lavender Latte - **** refreshing taste, recommend Pink Matcha - *** overly sweet Price: decent quality and slightly overpriced, expect each drink costs about $7~$8
google avatar

Karina C.

Yelp
Its pricey coffee, but appreciate that it's vegan friendly. Cute vibes, and very easy to walk to

Yelp
Aesthetically pleasing but I was pretty disappointed in my drink and food option. I got a rose bowl latte and the flavor was off and not good. It was too sweet and bitter at the same time. I also got a mushroom croissant. I asked for it warmed up and the inside was still cold. Overall the items I got were disappointing and seemed like a waste of money. I'm glad I didn't get one of the other food items that were each $17. That did not seem like a fair price for the items I saw.

Yelp
This is supposedly the Berry Energizer. But there in contrast to the advertised photo within the coffee shop are no fruits. No strawberries of any kind. When I pointed that out the barista apologized but then brought out a packet with I guess strawberry flavored powder ti put in. Perhaps it's in the fine print but even though tasty. It's not what was advertised. Also it was loaded with ice. Maybe it was just an off day. Still will come here but definitely need some clarification on the drink Hence the three stars

Yelp
Coffee and Plants is a cute little coffee shop nestled in a little alley way in old town Pasadena. I came and tried the avocado toast. It was good but a little too sour for my liking. They have a few different options for savory foods and a variety of sweet treats and caffeinated beverages to choose from. Nice quiet place to study and/or get some work done.

Yelp
Tucked away in the alley area of Old Pasadena, Coffee and Plants is a charming spot for a quality coffee break and perfect for those Instagrammable foodie moments. If you're using the Pasadena Coffee Passport, you're supposed to get 10% off a drink here, though to be honest, I'm not sure if the discount actually applied. My Dubai Chocolate Latte with oat milk still came out to $10. A bit pricey, but I genuinely enjoyed it. The drink had a nice balance of coffee, pistachio, and shredded coconut, and by the time I finished it, I was surprisingly full. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and I noticed a few pastry options available too. Service was quick, the coffee tasted great, and the overall vibe is adorable. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Great service, great coffee, and the cutest vibes. Parking is a bit tricky but it's always worth it

Yelp
We stopped here as we were in town and were so happy to find this cute coffee shop. Staff is super friendly and they have indoor and outdoor seating. We got vanilla lattes one iced and one hot super delicious and high quality we ordered the Savory Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil Flat Puff and chocolate croissant warmed up and enjoyed them so much for another of each to go!

Yelp
Coffee and Plants is a vibrant coffee shop in the heart of Old Pasadena. They serve a variety of plant-based coffee drinks, including the Dubai chocolate and strawberry matcha. Their coffee and pastries are delicious and unique as well. The decor is beautiful which is perfect for a photo op. Ac, the owner, is kind and attentive which makes the whole experience even better.

Yelp
I recently visited coffee and plants again and had another good experience! I didn't have a card on me and the employee helped me out with paying cash. I brought a notebook for sketching and stayed for several hours. I felt very comfortable and welcomed there, not like they just were waiting for me to leave. I really enjoy the ambiance and aesthetic of the coffee shop. The presentation was lovely. I loved served me with really pretty dishes used. I really wanted a sweet croissant, but the only thing left was the pizza puff, which was delicious. I'm sure it was because I arrived as noon. They probably get taken up first thing in the morning. My only disappointment was the Rosebowl Latte. It was simply not my taste. It didn't taste like other rose drinks I've gotten before. My boyfriend tasted it and he didn't like it either. It's pretty but it doesn't taste good. The last drink I tried here was not my vibe either, it didn't taste like anything to me. So overall I would come for the vibes and the pastries, not great drinks. I will still be back and willing to try something else though.
google avatar

Yelp
Hit and miss service but at least they had consistent coffee. Most of the baristas that I saw in the morning were great and attentive but one of them seemed to give just good enough service. She was less attentive and one time we were waiting about 5 minutes for her to come to front and didn't say anything to us for taking awhile to attend to us. I don't expect catered attention, but a quick "sorry about the wait" is more than enough for a coffee shop. The coffee I had was good: regular cappuccino and latte between the few times I had it. Croissant and matcha muffin were great. The decor and merch were great and it was nice and quiet with some music playing in the morning. Decent but I'd probably try to find a different shop to be a regular at.

Yelp
The cynic in me thinks this store is just an influencers dream...it's trendy and cute and a great place to take a pic for the gram. As a coffee and oat milk connoisseur, it's a great place to have a drink. Walking down one of the tiny alleys in Old Town Pasadena, I came across a tiny shop, clad in ivy and teddy bears, with a sign that said coffee. Needing a late afternoon jolt, I popped my head in for a latte. The menu has the usual fare, americanos, lattes, etc. I ordered my usual, a vanilla latte and a drink from their no coffee menu, a blue vanilla latte. The bonus here is that it's a vegan cafe, so there's no regular milk here...oat milk doesn't come at a premium. Service was pretty quick, but I can see things slowing down when there's a line of people. Within a couple minutes, I had a small vanilla latte and a delightfully blue iced drink. The latte at first was kind of bitter, but a minute later, the flavors melded nicely and it was a surprisingly good drink. The coffee flavor was strong, but still managed to be highlighted by the lightness of the oat milk and hints of vanilla. The blue lavender latte was iced oat milk with a very blue lavender syrup. While many places get the ratio wrong and the drink can taste like soap, this was perfect. Did I pay 7 bucks for a cup of milk in ice? Yep, but it was so refreshing, I'd do it again. The latte was also 7 bucks, which seems like a steep price for a small cup of coffee...but I've paid that much for a much larger cup of coffee, from a soulless corporation, and it doesn't match the flavor and quality I got from Coffee & Plants. So is the store too cute for my tastes...yes, but the coffee tastes great and that's what really matters.

Yelp
Drove out to Pasadena this afternoon to go to Neon Retro and then wanted to find a vegan place - hoping for something in walking distance and found this place 25 min before they closed and the guy working there was so helpful. Definitely want to go back!

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops in Old Town Pasadena. This cafe is really cute with amazing floral decor, great for photos! There are some seats outside and about 5 small tables inside. The staff is super welcoming and friendly. My last visit I got an iced mocha with oat milk, which was delicious!

Sol L.

Yelp
Great drinks and muffin but the up-charge for delivery is actually insane. They're charging upwards of $60 for (1) drink on Grubhub. If you go in person it's your regular overpriced lattes (~$7-$9) but their grubhub pricing strategy is definitely questionable..

Jason Y.

Yelp
It's always a delicious experience coming here, and the ambience is so calming. I only wish they offered more plant-based milk options, such as soy.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
The cutest coffee shop! Their outdoor and indoor decor is adorable. They have plenty of coffee options. I tried their iced vanilla latte and my boyfriend tried a cold brew. Service is quick. There's parking across the street at a parking garage. There is seating inside and outside. It's quiet enough to do some homework or catch up on work , easy access to grab a coffee and enjoy downtown Pasadena. I definitely recommend if you're in the area and you're a coffee enthusiast. ** I do wish there were more plants to purchase, as they have limited plants to purchase.

Yelp
I came in right before my obscenely early facial appointment. I ordered a hot vanilla latte with oatmilk and it hit just the spot. The cafe is super cute and inviting. The woman at the counter was friendly enough (I don't blame her, it was 8am on a Saturday morning).I plan on making this my regular coffee spot whenever I'm in the area.

Yelp
cute coffee shop nearby IPIC Theater, good meeting spot. comfortable seating both indoor and outdoor. barista is very friendly. i ordered dubai chocolate latte and it's really good!

Yelp
First of all this place is adorable and easy to get to. There's a parking garage across the street otherwise maybe you can find street parking. The cafe itself is in an alley way type of spot. It has outdoor and indoor seating with a super cute aesthetic. Inside you'll find pastries and a food menu. There's also cute plants along the wall you can buy and take home! The service was great. Everyone was friendly and quick to serve us. Our food didn't take long and it all tasted very good. It's great that it is all plant-based. I'm not strictly plant-based but I do like that there are options for those who are. I can't wait to go back and try more of their drinks, haha.

Yelp
Tried out coffee and plants for the first time and it definitely had a lot of decor and hype with it! Drinks: -Chai latte: I think this is the reason for my review. I was really disappointed in the drink. First, the taste of it was interesting and it just fell flat in some ways. I did think the taste was kind of strong, but hmm it's not fair to them since I can't really describe it. What I can say though is that given their price, their small (one) sizes, I was surprised to find that my cup was a little less than 3/4 filled. I get with coffee, there's room for sugar/cream or with these lattes, room for whipped cream but usually it's not 1/4 of the cup for that so.. I'm not sure what happened there Seating: -we sat outside and it's a bit on a curve so some of the chairs were a little rickety. Not a big deal though as it's a cute alleyway! Overall: Won't be back to coffee and plants on my own though I don't mind coming with a pal and maybe trying out their food.

Yelp
Love that there is a vegan coffee place we can go to. Super good and very cute. Service is always great.

Yelp
Favorite cafe. Beautiful shop, friendly staff, and delicious everything. Parking can be a challenge in the area, but it's a lovely spot to walk to if you live or park somewhere nearby!

Yelp
I had lavender lattes at other store but the ones from this shop is the best ! Everything just taste so good from this shop !

Yelp
Found this Super cute, clean, relaxing place with a good coffee and plants. The two girls today are super nice and friendly. The music is very good to listen to and not loud which is good. My favorite here is the refreshing Lavender Cold Latte. Plus, it's pet-friendly! My companion savored the exquisite chocolate croissant, utterly delighted by its exceptional quality. Furthermore, she expressed great satisfaction with the service provided.
google avatar

Yelp
Chill vibes, plenty of indoor seats and outdoors, the cafe also sells plants and other merchandise. They also offer free water cups.

Yelp
Such a cute shop! Almost missed it because it's in an alley. It's very cutely decorated with plants and pink/green themed items. I had the matcha white chocolate muffin and the chocolate chip sea salt cookie. My favorite between the two was definitely the muffin! They heated both items up and the muffin fell apart after so I was nervous, but it turned out to be really good! You could definitely taste the matcha. The muffin was also really moist and crumbly at the same time; haven't had a vegan muffin that's tasted as good as this in a while! The white chocolate chips weren't too sweet, so this was appreciated. The cookie fell apart very easily so it was hard to eat/hold when hot; it was fine when cold but the cookie was very grainy. Flavor wise, it was a pretty standard cookie, nothing crazy. I'd definitely come back for the muffin and to try a croissant. The latte came with oat milk as standard - yay for no extra charge! It was a smaller latte and was very balanced.
google avatar

Judy T.

Yelp
Came here to try this place because it was up for voting in VegNews as a favorite vegan cafe. The inside is so cute with plants and a nice pastel decor theme. The drinks also look cute and they had some delicious looking pastries as well as JustEgg breakfast toasted/sandwich options. I tried a peach lemonade drink and vegan mushroom pastry. Both were delicious but a bit pricey for my taste especially for a simple lemonade. Seems like it has limited but available seating and I saw people chatting with friends and studying as well.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice but the matcha they makes I extremely watered down, overall only good for pictures

Yelp
Coffee And Plants (est 2019) is cute lil plant-based coffee shop tucked in an alley way of One Colorado Square in Pasadena. It's founded by Leona Lewis, Dennis Jauch, and friend Achraf Sekhiri. I bet you didn't know that. HaHa! They have specialty drinks, drip and pour-over coffees, cold brews, special teas and seasonal menu items. Its pulchritudinous indoor and outdoor design is infused with faux plants and flowers; indoor seats were limited and layout lacks space but their front outdoor seats make up for it. I was perfunctorily greeted by a staff. I perused their menu and ordered a regular cold brew (10oz) x almond milk. I liked the taste and smoothness. I honestly think it's kinda small for a $6.25 tag price. Condiment section was organized and clean. Staff was competent. Atmosphere was relaxing. Overall, I had a good experience and enjoyed my drink as a first time visitor.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Loved this quaint coffee shop. Went with a vegan friend who recommended the Avocado Tartine. It was delectable. Thick multi- grain toast topped with avocado, pickled red onions, sun-dried tomatoes, and capers. Also had a cappuccino with oatmilk, which was also very good. The decor and service were great. The cost was a little pricey but it's also downtown Pasadena, so you have to expect that. I'll be back next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Abigail U.

Yelp
The decor of the coffee shop was incredibly inviting and charming, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The cute touches added to the overall appeal, making it a delightful place to spend time. One unique aspect of this coffee shop is its complete plant-based approach, offering only almond or oat milk for those who prefer milk in their coffee or teas. I decided to try their vanilla iced latte with almond milk, and while it was good, I felt that it could have used less milk to bring out the coffee's flavor more. They don't have restrooms for their guests.
google avatar

Hiromi R.

Yelp
Quaint, cozy spot in the heart of Old Town Pasadena, this little coffee shop is a great place to catch up with some friends or to get some work done. It feels like a little plant oasis, and yes, it's real plants! Thankfully whenever I come here, I'm able to find inside seating where I can plug in my computer to a power outlet, but I can imagine seating being somewhat limited during warmer days. I've tried a few drinks here and I really liked their Rosebowl latte. It has a flowery taste, so for those who are not into floral, I wouldn't recommend this drink, but rather go with the 24k charcoal latte. Drinks here start at around $7, a little pricey for coffee, but that is Pasadena for ya ;) I haven't tried any of their foods, but some of their little pastries looked quite tasty. Will keep this one in my go-to coffee shop!
google avatar

Timmy S.

Yelp
This cute little shop, sitting in a side alley, sells coffee and pastries. And plants! Plants all over the place! There are a handful of tables inside and many more outside. Everything here is plant-based which means only oat milk or almond milk for your latte. I ordered a vanilla latte and a slice of pumpkin pie. I appreciated the pie was served on a real plate and the latte in a cup & saucer rather than a to-go cup. I sat outside and enjoyed some nice weather and people-watching. The latte was good but I'm used to whole milk which I much prefer in a latte. The pie was fresh with good crust and a simple, unembellished flavor. Staff here were quite pleasant. Prices were definitely on the high side; honestly the highest I've ever paid for a latte. There is a huge parking structure across the street, also at a premium price. All in all it's got a great vibe and is a good spot to meet a friend or date.
google avatar

Janel J.

Yelp
My iced latte with cold foam was the perfect amount of sweetness and Espresso! Shop is so cute - def coming back to try the rose bowl latte
google avatar

Jazmine S.

Yelp
The blue lavender latte is so delicious! The music they play is so good and adds to the cute vibe of the cafe. Friendly service just as my last visit. For food I got the mushroom provolone croissant and it was tasty. I prefer the tomato mozzarella puff but the croissant was also yummy.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
The shop was super cute and the sole team member that was there was really nice and efficient. I got one of their limited edition Dubai Chocolate drink and it was okay but didnt taste like the Dubai Chocolate. It was super pricey at $10! I had the Pasadena Passport so I got 10% off. Overall, I would give this shop another chance and I'll probably try one of their signature drinks instead.
google avatar

Cindy P.

Yelp
Good coffee. Good, friendly service. Nice seating outside. I don't have anything negative to share about this spot. I do wish there was a bathroom though.

Yelp
Cute plant based cafe. Combining both of my loves: coffee and plants! This is tucked away in a courtyard in Pasadena. I ordered the lavender latte and it was the perfect accompaniment whilst I sit and people watch. Love that they use natural ingredients!

Yelp
I have been coming to Coffee and Plants with my husband since they first opened in 2019 or so. In the beginning, it was a wonderful coffee shop that seemed to provide an intentionally curated third place with amazing plant-based drinks and pastries. The baristas used to be some of the best in town that were always warm and friendly and went out of their way to foster a sense of community. In the last couple of years, this has significantly changed for the worse. We've continued to go back hoping it was just one-off bad experiences, but the last several times we have been in, it has been horrible. I think it is finally time to admit and accept that Coffee and Plants is no longer what it was. This last time we came in, we were the only other customers other than one individual (seemingly a friend of the barista) sitting on his computer. The barista and this customer were having a personal conversation and my husband and I stood their awkwardly going unacknowledged other than a glance in our direction for a solid two minutes. No greeting or an "I'll be right there with you." Just the barista going on talking with his friend, which would've been fine if it was eventually rectified, but when he came to the register to take our orders, he was equally dismissive and rude and acted as if we were a burden. We ordered the specialty Valentine's latte (the love potion) because we had it in the past and loved it. The drink we received was a sad excuse for what it is marketed as and what we have known it to be. The espresso tasted burnt and there was no chocolate raspberry drizzle or sugar rim as it was shown in their advertising. Drinks used to be made with a lot of care, but that is no longer the case. A similar experience happened back in December when we came in for one of their Holiday drinks. Unfortunately, this experience with the rude barista has happened many times before. They seem to hire individuals who just simply do not care about customer service or even being a kind human being period. We have also been in the store many times when one of the co-owners is working, and he is the worst of them all as it pertains to being unkind and rude. I wish I had answers as to what changed this coffee shop so drastically, but it has gotten so bad, and it is not a good look. Once upon a time the coffee was good, but that is all in the past. With so many coffee shops providing plant-based options now, I would say you are better off spending your money somewhere else and supporting a business that treats its patrons with basic kindness and respect.

Vicki C.

Yelp
The 24K charcoal latte was unique and I enjoyed the flavor, a little gritty towards the end. The superfood latte contains maca, a root used for medicine. We also got an egg toast that was topped with toasted coconut and a delicious hot sauce. The matcha white chocolate muffin was really good and moist.

Vivian Q.

Yelp
Cutesy coffeeshop especially with their holiday-themed decorations up. Service was so friendly - there was a single barista working as a large number of people entered and he was so pleasant in taking care of all of our orders. I didn't realize initially that this shop was completely plant-based, so was happy to order my blue lavender latte with oat milk without an additional upcharge. The chocolate croissant was also quite good, personally liked it better than their chia loaf. Next time would like to sit in the shop and have a leisurely drink and snack, and try another of their specialty drinks.
google avatar

Joanna V.

Yelp
Over all I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 experience the cafe is cute and the music is chill, I'm glad it was a sunny day to enjoy there outside sitting.

Yelp
This cafe is very cute. I love the mix of pinks, greenery, florals, and the teddy bears. The service was great and I love that they are dog friendly. The barista was very nice and she even offered my dog a treat. I ordered an iced cookie butter latte which is part of their winter specials. It was smooth and sweet. I liked how the sweetness did not overpower the coffee taste. There were also cookies crumbs sprinkled on top which was a delicious addition. When I'm in Pasadena, I will be coming back to try their other drinks and pastries.

Yelp
Coffee and Plants is a gorgeous coffee shop located right off of 62 W Union St. It is right in the heart of a collection of shops and other eateries. What's great is that the area has tons to see and explore. You could happily spend hours just taking in the contemporary classic architecture of the city or just browsing through endless rows of shops. The inside of this quaint store is brightened by the array of lush flora hugging each wall. You feel as if you're resting in the midst of a garden. They sell some baked goods as well as coffee, teas, and some a handful of non-coffee drinks. The barista was very friendly, and she provided me some wonderful insights into the business as well as drink recommendations. What's great is that I learned that they are dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint by reducing reliance on the diary industry by offering more plant-based products. This pet-friendly cafe donates a portion of its proceeds to the National Forest Foundation and Hopefield Animal Sanctuary. I tried out their Cookie Butter Latte ($7.50). It's a mild roasted coffee body sweetened by a bit of cookie butter syrup and crumbled bits of (I think) Biscoff cookies. It's a bit on the sweeter side but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
