The Good and the Bad of Singapore’s New Hawkerpreneurs | Eater

"A family-run kopitiam stall taken over in 2011 by a daughter who grew up working there, this small Amoy Street Food Centre operation continues to serve traditional Nanyang kopi made from dark robusta beans while also embracing contemporary tastes. Under her leadership the stall added trendy flavored lattes—salted caramel, black sesame, and pistachio—and shifted from the older practice of serving takeaway drinks in clear plastic bags to disposable cups more like those used at international coffee chains. While some customers criticize the move as gimmicky and a departure from classic kopitiam ways, the owner points out that innovation has long been part of the family’s approach, tracing flavored experiments back to her father, and she frames the evolution as a way to keep the business viable and relevant to a new generation." - Jacklin Kwan

My family was here from out of town. My eldest loves to look for coffee shops wherever we go. This place did not disappoint! So many unique flavors, owner was pleasant, and the atmosphere was absolutely adorable. We had a wonderful conversation with the locals. A memorable stop for sure!

Google
I’m not sure how this isn’t a 5/5 stars in totality from every review. The coziness of this coffee shop is unparalleled. The owner is one of the nicest humans you could ever meet. I was visiting from out of town and truth be told am not a coffee drinker. However the coffee I did have from here was otherworldly. I highly recommend supporting this small business.

Google
Cutest little place! It's not your regular coffee shop, but that's certainly part of the charm. We were there on Easter Sunday; one of the few places that was open (which we really appreciated). I got a mocha, which was absolutely fantastic. Service was great; very friendly.

Google
The owner was so helpful. He made myself and my daughter feel like we were welcome and apart of his family. If only for a moment I felt like we were swept away to a small bistro. I would definitely recommend stoping by!

I am in love with Coffee Break! I've been a student in Bismarck for 3 years and sadly only discovered this place in my final semester after a friend's recommendation. The atmosphere is charming and it's quiet in the afternoons(perfect for studying!), and the coffee is better in both quality and price than Starbucks, Caribou or any of the main chains. There are also delicious flavor combinations for lattes that I never considered before(Try the cowboy!) and the owner is so kind. 10/10 recommend!

Google
So welcoming on a great and rainy North Dakota morning. The owner has such an infectious smile, the shop is bright and cheery. Wonderful pit-stop on the road-trip.

Google
Coffee Break is the best coffee place in all of Bismarck, Western ND and maybe all of ND. The owner is so nice and sweet, ready to hear all of your stories and talk to everyone in the community. The diversity of drinks available is large with many flavors to add to your drinks, and all of them are delicious. The ice used in the ice drinks is amazing and the milk is incredibly creamy. The prices are more than reasonable Lattes will run you about $5 and that’s way u Det paying for the quality of coffee. The atmosphere in the store is incredible as well, the decorations are welcoming and cute making you want to sit for hours. Wi-Fi is available as are bathrooms. The only thing lacking is convenient parking because the store is downtown, but there will usually be street parking in front and there’s a parking structure just down the street. Definitely check out Coffee Break if you’re in town!

Google
My wife was the one that went in and ordered and the man was very nice and friendly but barely spoke English. I took about 2 sips of his attempt and a whit chocolate carmel latte and decided no more. Won’t be heading back and wouldn’t recommend. It was like only $4 though

Yelp
This cafe is adorable. Very personal. The barista / owner was charming and attentive. I like the decor. I had a banana coffee and it was spectacular

Yelp
Honestly what a genuine coffee shop that has been around for years. Easy street parking. Any drink you can imagine and lots of flavored syrups. He also sells whole beans. I just grabbed an!iced coffee. One size fits all and it's great! Cash is preferred but I was able to pay with a card. This is a lovely place to come and relax or catch up on local activity.

Yelp
I was on a trip and decided to try something new. I got the Carmel apple and it was amazing. Will be visiting again the next time they send me here.

Yelp
Love this place! My wife and I come here three or four times a week. And the owner is super nice.

Yelp
Friendly atmosphere and made to order coffee. Fresh grounds each order. The gentleman behind the counter is from my home town so we bonded over that! Small world as I am from the SF Bay Area!

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience. Very gracious owner and he has a neat collection of things available for sale. Best coffee I have had this year!

Kyyalyn E.

Yelp
Truly a humble guy. Very easy to talk to and very nice. The drinks are made with love I swear they're tewwww good

Yelp
Dirty Chai latte is the best I've ever had and I've ordered them all over the country! Don't let the simple, old school vibe throw you off, embrace it!

Yelp
This place is amazing. Come grab a cup. Read through the paper. Chat with your friend. Personally I love their flavored beans to go. He will even grind the beans for you at no charge. Super cool guy who owns this place. Try vanilla creme brulle on the beans. :)

Yelp
This place is amazing!! The coffee is unbelievable, I don't go anywhere else in Bismarck for a latte. The owner is so kind, and it feels like you're walking into someones home. Such a gem.

Yelp
Coffee Break is a lovely small business to support. Prices were very fair and my drinks (espresso, steamer, and cappuccino) were made quickly and tasted great. The ambiance was friendly and cozy. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
I came to Coffee Break when I spent the night in Bismark. I love the the vibe of the shop and the owner is extremely kind. I talked with him for about 15 minutes. I got a mocha and drip coffee both were very good. I cole to Bismark frequently for work and told the owner I will definitely be back. Coffee Break is a fun and cozy local coffee shop that I will continue to support when I come into town!

Yelp
I stopped by here this past Sunday morning with my wife and her parents for our morning coffee. We had actually noticed Coffee Break a couple of days prior whenever we were downtown for the arts festival but hadn't made it in. So on that Sunday morning we headed on over to try it. The inside of Coffee Break looked sort of old timey with its tile floor but easily had the most merchandise that I had seen for awhile. It consisted of tons of different Torani syrup as well as a large assortment of whole coffee beans in different varieties and flavors. For my coffee on this morning I decided to go with my usual large Americano while my wife went her usual small Americano. The guy making our coffee (the owner I believe from other reviews) was quite a jovial and happy guy who made our experience in the shop warm. Within a short amount of time we were headed back to our car with or coffees. After giving it the usual amount of time to cool down I was able to taste my coffee. I wasn't really a fan of it and thought it had a stale type taste to it. Meanwhile my wife told me how she really enjoyed hers and that it was strong and rich. That made me wonder if it was the creamer I had added to mine and so I tried hers. Nope, same odd stale like taste that mine had, at least to me. The bottom line for me is that I would probably head back here again in the future. While I wasn't a huge fan of my coffee here, my wife was and so I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

Yelp
The kindest man, Cia, owns this little coffee shop! I highly recome y the raspberry shaker. It is a iced coffee with raspberry flavoring (on the sweeter side). Never had anything like it. Happy to have found this place while traveling. NM Resident

Yelp
Great small cafe and coffee shop, always good food and friendly. Outdoor seating is great, owners are very dedicated to providing excellent service.

Yelp
Our usual coffee shop wasn't open today, however we needed a caffeine fix! We have never been to Coffee Break and gave it a try! The owner was friendly, the drinks were tasty, and I'm ready to go back tomorrow!

Yelp
This place was really neat. It's a local hole in the wall coffee shop, that doesn't mean it's your stereotypical hipster coffee shop most people have come to know. But a real mom and pops place. Everyone was sitting around talking and the owner was joining in with them, and when I walked in he provided me service immediately. He made me an Americano and it was perfect! It made me so happy to see a group of people talking and laughing instead of the usual city rush. I'll definitely make my way back if I'm ever here again.

Yelp
Great coffee ... great service. And open on Sunday. Google finds it without a problem.

Yelp
Nice little coffee shop and a welcoming surprise when visiting Bismarck. If you want a really nice, chill coffee shop, this is for you. All kinds of coffee flavors and great staff. Free WiFi. If you find yourself looking for a local, non-chain coffee this should be your stop!

Yelp
This is my coffee shop - well I don't own it, but it is the place I like go go and have coffee over all other places in Bismarck/Mandan. The owner, Cya, is a naturalized Iranian who is politically incorrect, occasionally says inappropriate things, and sometimes is grumpy. In other words a typical human being. He and his employees are efficient, fast, and will talk and laugh with you and his regulars are from literally every walk of life. You can find students, tradesmen, professionals, politicians, policemen, Soldiers, as well as homeless and parolees (urine testing site in the neighborhood) buying coffee here. Cya will tell you that is America. As for paying for the internet - well it seems to me that is offered in other places for free, but your coffee will be more expensive. The one poster was correct, his selection of pastries is pretty lousy, but it's like his providing internet. His is a coffee shop. You want a special pastry, go to a pastry shop. I always get a kick out of people who want every little shop to be just like Walmart or, in this case, Starbucks or Perkins. There is a reason they exist, so go there if you want what they offer, but please don't hold it against a small business that never claimed it was either of those.

Yelp
This is a great little coffee shop down the block from my house. They open pretty early so it's nice to support a local business. Today was my first time in the shop and the gentleman working was very friendly and welcomed me in. I think they have just about every flavored syrup you can think of and more. They have a pretty big menu with top picks and then you can customize a drink with all the different flavors you can choose from. I had a had time picking a drink because they all sounded really good. They also have a huge selection of whole bean coffees, next time I will have to buy some. I ordered the rocha mocha and it was a little on the sweeter side for my liking but it was pretty good, nice to go some place and have it made hot without having to ask for it extra hot. Not a very big selection of pastries but that's ok. Very friendly and the shop was kept clean, I will definitely return on the early mornings when I work. One thing I have never seen a coffee shop do is offer delivery, nice option when you are working and can't leave. Go and give them a try!!

Yelp
I enjoy going here. The owner is always friendly, and he makes your drink order quickly. If you're ordering something off of the menu, be aware that it will be sweet. I always order mine with half of less of the syrup, otherwise it's just too sweet, which is fine if you like sweet. Give this place a shot if you want a cup of unpretentious coffee.

Yelp
Huge selection of mixed coffee drinks. A lot appealed to me, but I was there for the wireless. Not the free wireless, however. "Due to upgrades," they charge $2 per half-hour of use. Small seating area, I couldn't help but feel the place was a little dirty.

Yelp
Stopped there while returning from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The coffee was good and, it's true, they have a huge selection of beans and beverages. The service was ok but the place was empty and the decoration kinda hideous! Kind of hipster vibe though.

Yelp
I have literally receive better service at Starbucks. Usually I don't rate by service, I am making an exception because I dealt directly with the owner. The owner seemed so disinterested I felt as if I'm imposing in his home. While they have a large selection of beans, you are hard pressed (pun intended) to find a variety of coffee ready to serve.

Justice W.

Yelp
BEST coffee in the state. I don't live in Bismarck, but whenever I make it over I HAVE to go to Coffee Break. I've even drove to Bismarck just to go to coffee break. Not only is it the most delicious coffee EVER. The atmosphere is so wonderful. And the owner is the nicest person! 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
The CUTEST coffee shop I've ever been to. It was relaxing and there are plants all around the shop. I got a large chai with almond milk and espresso. It was perfect, so many drinks to choose from. Also, they have coffee beans for purchase and I got the butterscotch ones. Will be back when I visit Bismarck again!

Yelp
Definitely my favorite place to get coffee in Bismarck! Whenever I'm home for the holidays I make it a point to stop here.

Yelp
Coffee break is an amazing little coffee shop in the heart of downtown Bismarck. The owner is so friendly and offers a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your cup of Joe. The coffee shop has so many options and has the perfect cup of coffee for anyone.

Yelp
Stopped in here after a harrowing experience on winter roads and was greeted by a congenial man at the cashier, a wall of various coffee beans, and so much natural light and plants. I got the southern praline latte which was the exact sweet and creamy I needed. Thank you coffee break for giving me a much needed rest and taking care of me!

Yelp
Best place in town. He has so many options and they are all good. Also amazing customer service. The place has a great atmosphere much like a larger city coffee house.

Yelp
Great way to get coffee in the Capitol of North Dakota! The owner was great and it was a great cup of fresh brewed deliciousness. I will be going back and you should too!

Yelp
I love this place! The selection can't be beat - anywhere, and you're always greeted with a big smile

Yelp
Lots of coffee. Very little selection of treats. Arabic Internet news as background ambience. Americano not as good as Starbucks muddy.

Yelp
When we travel we like to check out local mom & pop restaurants and coffee shops as usually they are good experiences with good people. This coffee shop is one of the worst we've seen. We walked in the door and noticed it smelled funky but it's an older building in downtown Bismarck so we let it slide. Latte and a sort of blended iced mocha were OK. We sat down for a bit to relax. That's when we noticed the place hadn't been cleaned in a long time. Tables were ok but outside edges of the floor and window sills hadn't been touched, maybe ever. Then we decided to use the restroom before we left. My husband rarely complains but he said he'd never seen anything like the men's restroom. The smell was horrible and it appeared that someone had rubbed feces on the walls; the toilet and sink were also filthy. He would have cut the owner some slack but it was dried on so it had been there more than a day. I used the women's and it wasn't as bad but had not been cleaned in a long time. The person working, who might have been the owner, seemed like a nice enough guy but he needs to start cleaning. I don't like to leave negative reviews on local places, but I would hope that if others found a place to be this unsanitary, they would warn fellow Yelpers.

Yelp
This cute little shop on the corner caught my eye the first time I drove past. It took me a couple of months to go there, but when I did it was well worth the wait. The owner was very friendly, and service took about five minutes from the time we stepped in the door. I would recommend this store to anyone who is looking for a nice cup of coffee and a friendly face.

Yelp
Service and selection are excellent. I've never been disappointed there! Also the best selection of coffee syrups in the area and reasonably priced. Delivery service is quick and accurate. Highly recommend stopping here!

Lesley D.

Yelp
Out of town, came looking for a latte. It was probably the worst latte I've had. I might disagree with Starbucks ethics and roasting philosophy, but they do know how to steam milk and use higher quality products than Coffee Break. The drinks were all syrup suicides, throwing 3 or 4 Toriani flavors into one drink. Ergo, hyper sweet, no real flavor. The milk was over-steamed and burnt, and the froth was a literal puck of bubbles, more like something I'd expect in a bathtub. The owner was a nice guy, and it's a convenient place to stop in quick. However, if you want a quality latte in Bismarck ND, it might actually be better to give in and go to Starbucks.

Andrew D.

Yelp
Ok I AM SORRY. THis place is like my home now. I feel like every time i enter (often) his door is like the threshold to heaven. I have never had a sassy worker, like.. AHEM... Sbux. They are all so great. Its a little new york on the inside. I love it. Awesome drinks, too. Probably should mention that the parking is always awesome. I almost always get one of the 2 10 minute spots in front, and if i dont I steal some from Reza's (Like he cares). My favorite is the Kona or the Cowboy latte, both are awesome iced. Cia, the Owner, makes me feel like AWESOME there. He makes everything so good. Cia later, Cia.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. I only travel to Bismarck December thru March for work purposes, and I can't do a trip to Bismarck without stopping in Coffee Break at least once a day while I'm there. My drink of choice is a latte with a little bit of the amaretto syrup, however the amaretto mocha is a close second. When I'm in a serious coffee mood, I stick with the Americano. I've tried some of the other offered flavored coffee drinks, but the 3 I mentioned are my "go to choices," and I know I won't be disappointed. I love that the owner offers bottles of the various syrup flavors for sale - I now have a bottle of the amaretto flavor at my home. Traveling to Bismarck in the middle of winter can be tough - it's pretty much a frozen tundra, but I actually look forward to my trips because of this coffee shop! Thank you Coffee Break for providing delicious coffee and flavored coffee options - I'll be in tomorrow morning for my usual amaretto latte :)

Kiara G.

Yelp
Great little place to have a peaceful cup of coffee. Owner of the place is very friendly and welcoming. A very happy place with low prices.
