A College Student’s Guide to Campus Dining at Oregon State University | Eater Portland

"With four locations across town I turn to Coffee Culture for the convenience of drive-thru service or ample seating, and for beans it roasts itself via Holderness Coffee Roasters; seasonal pastries and the Metolius chai latte (a spiced mix of cardamom, ginger, cracked pepper, and hints of cayenne and cinnamon) are local favorites." - Mariah Botkin

Coffee Culture is a nice spot with a welcoming and relaxed vibe, perfect for getting some work done or just hanging out. The ambience is definitely its strongest point -- cozy and comfortable, with plenty of space to sit and focus. The coffee and drinks are decent, though not exceptional. It’s not the place I’d go for an unforgettable cup of coffee, but it’s reliable and enjoyable enough. Overall, it’s a good spot if you’re looking for a pleasant atmosphere to study, work, or unwind.

A Safe & Welcoming Place for Our Teens: As a parent, I’m incredibly grateful for Coffee Culture in Gainesville. They’ve created such a warm and welcoming environment—not just for us adults, but for our teenagers too. My daughter and her friends often hang out outside the café while waiting for parent pickup, and the staff has always been kind, patient, and understanding. They even go the extra mile by offering free waters and treating the kids with respect, knowing that they’re still learning and growing. It means so much to us as parents to know that our teens have a safe, friendly place to spend time. Thank you, Coffee Culture, for being a positive part of our community. Your kindness does not go unnoticed.

Update 8/11/25: Finally, my husband and I had time to eat-in at Coffee Culture on a sunny Monday afternoon. We ordered a square puff pastry of spinach & feta, cheesecake brownie, pumpkin chocolate pastry, 2 blueberry muffins, small hot vanilla latte, and large hot chocolate with vanilla. Total cost was about $40. The place only had 1 table occupied when we arrived so we beat the lunchtime coffee crowd. By the time we left (around 30 minutes after we arrivef), there were another 6 tables occupied. Tables seemed clean though it appeared the place was a bit on the dusty side since we decided to sit near the internet router area and there was a thick layer of dust around the cords. Parking situation is rough once people start filling in so would recommend the drive thru if you're not interested in squishing into the limited spaces. Would return here for another visit and use the drive thru ^_^ 2024: Visited the drive thru on a rainy Thursday for hot tea and ended up buying 2 hot green teas plus 7 cookies: 2 chocolate chip cookies and 5 snickerdoodles. Tea hit the spot. The cookies were a hit with the management and my co-workers. My husband and I shared a chocolate chip cookie; it was crunchy, soft and just sweet enough to satisfy my snack craving. The drive thru window girl was really friendly and helpful with offering information on the baked goods. Spent about $40 including a generous tip on the order. We will definitely be back to stop by and order in to see what they have on a day with nicer weather!

Google
Overall I enjoyed this coffee shop. I got the iced chai tea and it was the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. There is the main area but then a quiet back room to read or work. It is definitely more of a dive compared to new or trendy coffee shops in the area, but it adds to the nostalgia and charm, and it was a great place to get work done.

Google
The coffee is so delicious. I ordered two of their iced chocolate mocha, two iced white chocolate mochas, two breville lattes, a black coffee, The service here was exceptional! The environment is very casual with plenty of tables to enjoy your drinks and possibly a wonderful dessert from the dessert case. Parking is a little bit tight but we managed to get a parking space pretty easily. The prices for the coffees are competitive with other specialty coffee shops, but the quality of the beans that they use here did not disappoint this coffee snob. If you're in this area, definitely give this place a shot. It is definitely well worth the trip!

Those of you who have been with me for awhile know that I enjoy Local. Well I finally made time to visit a wonderful coffee shop that I had been driving past for too long. The coffee and all the latte choices are excellent as you might expect. The fruit bar which is homemade by the way is moist and loaded with fresh fruit. I tried the Tri-Berry. Awesome 🤩. As was the Carmel mocha hot. The service is great. And very nice. Wait time was only 4 min. The decor is like your library at home or anywhere you can relax. Very cool. WiFi is fast and free. So stop driving by and stop in. Even if it’s the drive thru, you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy 😉

Google
Great coffee and customer service! The place is great to study inside, and the ambiance and coffee esthetic is perfect for a story pic.

Google
I am very particular with my coffee. I find other places roasted beans to takes bitter and burnt. Not to mention, the prices are great. Try their fruit filled granola squares. Soooooo good!

Yelp
Nice Locally owned Coffee spot On NW 13th Ave. Definitely worth the trip if you're staying in Midtown. Coffee and Muffins were fresh. Staff was friendly and the wifi is good. If you're craving a good coffee, latte or cappuccino and a pastry, stop here, it will be worth it.

Yelp
I went through the drive thru since I didn't want to bother with parking and their parking lot is tiny. Overall pretty good coffee. I got the iced caramel latte and it was decent. I'll have to go back and check out their inside space next time. Their service was quick through the drive thru.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
The coffee here is pretty tasty and cheaper than a lot of coffee shops in the area! They have a ton of syrup options to add to your drink and they have some seasonal options as well. I went with the Mayan mocha and it had a really good flavor, but was still pretty strong. The inside is cute and the service is very quick.

Yelp
When I walked in and heard Florence + The Machine, I knew this would be a cool place. Independent coffee shop is also good for work/study with plenty of tables and light. Well-priced coffee drinks and friendly service makes this a solid destination. Bonus points for paper straws and pride stickers.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was really quick at the drive through. I was happy to see they had sugar free flavors and quite a few options, most places just have vanilla. The coffee was good, not too sweet, the staff was nice. We didn't interact a ton since it was just a drive through interaction. The location is easy to get too and their parking looks easy. I would come back

Yelp
Coffee Culture is my go-to place for a caffeinated pick-me-up. Great lattes with a wide variety of flavors, and there is consistently a selection of gluten-free pastries including the crispy rice bar, oat bar, and my personal favorite, the Elvis muffin (PB & banana & chocolate). Some of the best coffee in Gainesville, and good pastries and smoothies too, but I personally would not bother with the chai latte or the teas--too weak, in my opinion. Very cozy vibes, so I like to drink my coffee inside when I have the time to. Service is usually quite fast, and I appreciate that the staff is always willing to let me read product labels for allergy warnings if they don't know off the top off their head.

Kimberly Townsend P.

Yelp
So-so coffee, uneven baked goods, unsanitary bathroom, and the scent of mold. Not to mention the unpleasant manner of the owner. Don't give this business your hard-earned money.
google avatar

Wade W.

Yelp
I feel giving a 4 is a bit generous but that's what I decided on. We went during the winter time and we got the latte and it was warm, then we asked for them to somehow make it hotter and they said they couldn't. The vibe on the inside isn't my favorite either, but I'd be happy to come back and give it another shot.
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
I'm really sad this place didn't live to to the reviews. My ice latte was so watered down and too sweet and the hot coffee we ordered was luke warm. So sad we wasted our money and threw half of it out.

Yelp
Always my go to local spot for coffee!! You can pick up at the drive thru or go inside. There's good indoor space to study, read a book, or get some work done. Last months special the coconut cream (hazelnut and coconut) has been my recent fixation. Skip out on Starbucks and go local instead!

Tess H.

Yelp
I like to support local coffee shops over chain ones. Coffee Culture is definitely my favorite. The coffee is really good here and the people are nice. That being said, this was my first time trying to sit inside and it was 87 degrees. I wanted to stay and do some work but it was downright unbearable inside. I hope they fix that soon!!

Jeremy A.

Yelp
I have tried this place multiple times, and originally it was great, but recently the espresso was not balanced--very bitter. I'm not sure if it is the beans used or the way the espresso was prepared; the latte was undrinkable and very bitter with a weird after taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for a planning meeting. Barista recommended the black and white mocha and it did not disappoint!

Yelp
I popped in on a Saturday around noon and found the drive through overflowing and the parking lot full. I parked down the road in a neighborhood avoiding the marked tow away zone and walked over. I was thinking I might have to wait in line but service was super fast and helpful! What caught my eye? Triple espresso for the win! It was smooth and slightly sweet even though I drank it straight up! Since sleep was in very short supply, the espresso rejuvenated me this afternoon! The shop was nearly full of friendly coffee fans. Life is good with a tasty espresso!

Yelp
Coffee Culture is like a home away from home. The coffee is great. The service is impeccable. The baked goods are unequaled. The ambiance is comfortable, relaxing. Dropping in for a latte and an oat bar is so comforting, so homey, it's my go to for coffee in Gainesville.

Kristen G.

Yelp
I love coffee culture! Their coffee is SO good and cheaper than the big chains in the area. I love their flavors of the month and look forward to checking them out. The vibes are incredible inside and I've always been treated with respect and kindness by the employees. The drive thru is a great option and is always very fast, even with a long line. I like studying here, but the WiFi can be a little spotty. Overall awesome!
google avatar

Yelp
When it comes to coffee on this side of town, you've got Starbucks and Coffee Culture within a quarter of a mile from each other. Now I may be biased but I'm going with local anytime I can! Here's the thing Starbucks will almost always have a super long line, but coffee culture just a few feet away provides an excellent alternative for some delicious coffee. They've been around for several years and while they might not have the big brand power of a Starbucks they do have what I need... good coffee that I can order from my car!
google avatar

Benjamin G.

Yelp
I live right next to this coffee shop so it's super convenient. I love the special coffees they have and they switch them often so I get to try new things! The staff is always so nice and quick too. They have lounge chairs or more dining-type chairs a and tables depending on if you're reading or working!!

Lindsey D.

Yelp
Huge disappointment. I went with my husband this morning for a hot chai latte and a slice of banana bread, and both didn't hit the mark. For starters, the chai doesn't taste anything like chai. Rather, a warm glass of milk. As for the banana bread, it tasted like the plastic it's wrapped in and almost had a sour taste to it. We couldn't even finish the food or drink. I remember loving this place as a teen, but unfortunately, it's not what it use to be. Update: my husband and I definitely didn't have any sinus congestion / problems.

Yelp
Review from a new-ish coffee enthusiast: did drive-thru and ordered a cappuccino. Drive-thru line took between 5-10 minutes. Cappuccino tastes great. Flavors of chocolate, sweet (didn't add sugar), no strong bitterness. ~$4.00 for a medium. Only just started trying local coffee shops and so far this cappuccino was the best. Staff was quick and positive, no fuss. In and out. The building itself has a nice cozy classic Gainesville vibe. Will definitely be back to sit inside and enjoy the coffee atmosphere and try something new.

Yelp
So goooood, and fun!!! I had the black and blue gluten-free bar, and the Halloween trick-or-treat surprise drink which was amazing. I think it was toffee!
google avatar

Mayra B.

Yelp
It had been a long time since I had been to Coffee Culture, but today I was close and I really needed a good coffee, so I stopped by the car service and asked for a Cappuccino with almond milk, the employee was very attentive and friendly. Don't wait long for the coffee. Also the prices are acceptable. The coffee was hot, but when I took it I was disappointed, it was not like other times, I did not feel the aftertaste of coffee; I only felt that I was drinking hot milk, it did not have any coffee flavor and that made me very sad. I don't think I'll come back and I'm very sorry, but if you don't give me a good coffee, don't expect me to come back.

Yelp
Ready o enjoy a loca brewed latte May specials: Toasted marshmallows and almond latte And nutty bar DELICIOUSLY ADDICTIVE Ambiance is retro and cozy A breeze of gypsy Love it A great finding

Yelp
Coffee Culture is a cute hidden gem! It's 2 minutes away from Starbucks but after going here, I'd rather much support local and get tastier coffee! I've had a dark roast with cream and sugar and it was absolutely delicious! The iced vanilla latte had much of a coffee taste than a syrup flavor! The prices can't be beat! Also let's talk about their muffins! They were insanely moist, filled with their true flavor! Best muffins ever! All their staff is sweet, wearing masks and they closed off the indoor seating! Not that much outdoor seating, but the drive thru is wonderful! I love coffee culture and it's definitely one of top 5 coffee shops!

Yelp
drinks were okay but expensive, food was extremely expensive and just inedible (cold, hard, extremely salty). it was very loud even in the quiet working area in the back

Mariah H.

Yelp
The place is quaint and it's nice that they have a separate room for studying for high schoolers vs. college students. I ordered one thing but was given/rung up for a different drink- I'm sure it was mine because I was the only one at the counter.

Brad F.

Yelp
Pros- Coffee was good Served with a smile Cons- A little expensive Not my favorite place, but I'd go there again if convenient.
google avatar

Diana E.

Yelp
This place is - interesting. I had two flavored coffees while I was there, I went twice. Coffee was very good and well priced. I highly enjoyed my lattes. Cheaper than the Starbucks that is right down the street from them. Good service. First time I went thru the drive thru which was fine, nothing different than your average drive thru. Second time I went inside. The inside is definitely "vintage". Feels like you just time traveled to the 60's/70's. The inside was just ok.
google avatar

Scott A.

Yelp
The best espresso drinks in Gainesville. Nice atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in while visiting my Senior UF and found yet another delicious concoction: Super Bowl Sunday (almond, vanilla, and chocolate). I ordered hot and half sweet. I've never been disappointed when trying a new coffee and I always repeat my favs.

Yelp
In town for 4 days and got coffee and snacks everyday. Nice staff, quick service good coffee...Not much more to say!
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
We needed a place for a meeting and they accommodated us! They were soooo kind via Facebook and in the store! All of my members in the meeting got coffee AND LOVED IT!! We are thankful for this sweet little shop and their kindness.
google avatar

Minji K.

Yelp
This is a great local spot for coffee, tea, and studying! It does get pretty crowded in the afternoons and parking is the biggest issue (they need a bigger lot) but when I came here on a Saturday night, it was quiet (perfect for studying on a weekend night if you, like me unfortunately, have to). The coffee is very good and I recommend the freezers (frozen drinks) which are perfect for the sunny Florida weather. The mocha freezer is like drinking coffee and chocolate ice cream! I especially like the chill vibe here, the baristas are super nice, and there is a separate room for quiet studying if you need a more secluded place to burrow into your books! One note is that the chairs are wooden and pretty uncomfortable, if you're planning on sitting for a while.
google avatar

Lorraine n.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop! I got the iced vanilla latte and it was so yummy. They have tables WITH outlets inside as well as a drive-thru option.
google avatar

Mia W.

Yelp
excellent coffee and the people are very nice, excellent service. i love the stickers on the drive thru. :)
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop. It really reminds me of a local coffee shop in Ocala -- Chelsea coffee. A cool bonus is that they have a drive thru if you don't want to get out of your car or are in a rush. Prices are directly comparable with Starbucks, but you're supporting a local business when you go here. The espresso tastes great and they have lots of flavor and milk options. Employees are very kind and quick. I only waited a minute for my latte. While I did not eat anything on this visit, they had a lot of tempting vegan and non-vegan pastries to choose from.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
The most unpretentious, basic coffee shop ever. Has a drive thru, most of the staff have queer and punk vibes. Lots of people studying here, if not you could play their piano. Some kid dropped by for a cold brew early this morning and played Claire de Lune. Seems like they did open mics before the Covid times.
google avatar

Sasha A.

Yelp
Amazing place. The drive through is so convenient and much quicker then some others I've gone to. The monthly specials are conveniently placed on the speaker and I have never been disappointed trying something new. I recently tried the caramel mocha and was blown away, so delicious and might be my new go to. Their baked goods are great and the staff is always helpful to tell you what they have and what their favorites are. Gainesville is lucky to have Coffee Culture.
google avatar

Ana K.

Yelp
Drive-thru looked pretty busy when I pulled up but I wasn't in line for longer than 10 minutes. I didn't notice their speaker box worked but they were very nice about it and made my coffee on the fly. The coffee itself is really good (I got an iced oat milk extra sweet white choc caramel latte and a s'mores rice crispy treat). Definitely fairly priced for the speed and quality
google avatar

Sharon C.

Yelp
I'm a loyal black coffee drinker, but I will say I'll switch it up for Coffee Culture. My friend and I came by 2 days in a row and it was so great both times. She introduced me to the Iced Vanilla Latte with oat milk and oh wow serious gamechanger!! The second time I went I got the Iced Caramel Latte with oat milk and it was seriously just as good as the vanilla. Gotta go and gotta get oat milk!
google avatar

Brianna K.

Yelp
Coffee Culture - Gainesville, FL - 0/10 - absolutely terrible, they mixed up our drinks, the caramel flavoring was outrageously bad (like was there even coffee in there?), i'm pretty sure i was depressed when i came out and yes it was so bad we threw away our coffee and we weren't even halfway done with them SMH
google avatar

Horse H.

Yelp
Ehhhhh id skip this place. First off students aren't allowed in the back eating room (found this odd and rather discriminatory) but beyond this the price was insane for what you got (with a lot of stuff not having clearly labeled prices) and the tables were sticky. I don't really see myself ever coming here again. It's not like i stormed out angry but i feel this store is passable

Suzanne K.

Yelp
The staff is always nice and welcoming. The coffee tastes good, too. I am a nurse and, to my surprise, they have given me free hot or iced coffee. That's very kind of them. It's nice to go somewhere and feel appreciated as a customer (and I don't mean because they have given me free coffee).
google avatar

Naji W.

Yelp
Amazing. Got an iced vanilla latte and a banana nut muffin only 7$ and it was solid. Similar to other reviews the coffee did not just taste like straight vanilla syrup it actually had a nice flavor of coffee accompanying it. And the muffin was so flavorful you just have to try it yourself.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
They had a great variety of flavors and coffee options. They advertised having many gluten-free options, yet only macaroons were available when we went. Nobody greeted us or even turned around when we walked inside and had to wait for someone to come out from the back. The coffee was simple and customer service really affected my experience. I'm hoping to try to visit again soon and experience a different atmosphere.
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
I always try and support local coffee shops when I travel, not least because they tend to be better than big brands, and Coffee Culture is no exception to this. They made one of the best oat milk cappuccinos I've had in a long time. Great tasting espresso and the silkiest foam, which a lot of places can't do with oat milk. Oh, and the staff are funky and kind. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Katie P.

Yelp
My favorite Gainesville coffee spot! They have lots of different milk options for the vegan and dairy sensitive pals! I don't usually recommend coffee culture if you're looking for a huge variety of tea. However, their baked goods and coffees are so so so good. they have lots of gluten-free options in the bakery as well! My go-to order is a caramel latte with soy milk and an Elvis muffin (peanut butter, chocolate, and banana gluten-free muffin).

Lexi M.

Yelp
First off I'd like to say the coffee is great and reasonably priced. I live and work very close by, and the nearby Starbucks always has a ridiculously long line so I'll usually come here instead. The employees are unfriendly and come off rude and/or moody though so it kind of takes away from the experience. Also wish there was better food options.. I prefer savory over sweet and all they have on the menu is sugary pastries that never taste fresh. I've tried the muffins and bars and various other pastry items, but can never get past a few bites. It's also displeasing receiving food that's tightly squished in saran wrap.
google avatar

Toni T.

Yelp
Great low key study and/or date spot! They have a quiet room in the back for those who want to read or study. Coffee is great and they have a various selection. There's a fair amount of outlets along the perimeter. Only reason I did 4 stars was because parking can be a bit tight but with the location they are doing the best they can with it. Definitely a more hip and chill vibe of all the coffee shops in Gainesville. WiFi password is on the receipt. I come here a lot to study because I usually have better luck finding a spot when rush hour hits in the afternoon!
