The Best Old-School Diners in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"First opened in 1952, Coffee Cup has held down the corner of Randolph Avenue for 71 years with with steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and, of course, hot coffee. It serves all the diner breakfast classics, but the real gems are found in the specialty section of the menu: delicate Belgian waffles topped with berries and cream, and breakfast burritos stuffed with sausage and smothered in a rich hollandaise." - Justine Jones

Super amazing! The servers went above and beyond! Food was *heavenly* I had been wanting to go for a long time and finally made time to, I highly recommend coming here! I got the Peaches & Cream Belgian waffles 😋

Breakfast burrito. Your diner is my spirit animal. You are the watchers of souls, who have witnessed and assimilated what satiates us. Your burrito satisfies something...old. Something ancient, within all of us. Your breakfast burrito isn't just a good burrito. Its not just a good meal. Its an homage to the past, and the present, of the profound significance of food. We do not wish to survive. We wish to thrive. Thats how I feel when I eat your entire, gigantic, breakfast burrito; refusing to share a morsel. Never change. And also always order the additional grilled onions and bell peppers.

I haven't been here in a while and have been aiming to go, but every time I think about it it is already 1:30 or 2 pm and they close at 3 everyday. So I decided to make it my mission to go here for Mother's Day. We still got here after 1, but there were plenty of seats available. Amongst 3 of us, we got a salad, an omelet, a burger and sodas for $57. The food was good and plenty; maybe not as much as they used to serve though. And the prices are higher than before, but that's to be expected; they are at a comparable rate. They serve breakfast and lunch and they have some specialty dishes. They also sell cake, pie, cookies, and fruit. So for your next outing, I'd suggest you try this place, if you haven't already.

Google
This is a super reliable local gem that does it right. We’ve been frequent guests since they opened on Randolph and have never been disappointed. Portions are huge, the food is great and the staff is delightfully fun.

Google
Ordered for takeout burritos and hash browns for me and my family portion size they are not shy taste good seriously filling about 25 $30 a person including tax That's for one drink and the meal sad part is if you like mushrooms they use mushrooms out of a can I was really disappointed in that ordered mushrooms on my hash browns with cheese and onions and peppers and everything was good but those mushrooms ruined it for me unfortunately 😞 if they switch over to fresh mushrooms I would give it 10 out of 10 but because of mushrooms are canned so it gives your food a weird filmy texture in your mouth 6/10

I was a regular at Coffee Cup for about 45 years. Always excellent 👍 food . But on 8/22/25 I was asked to leave by the owner who claims I made rude or inappropriate remarks about a specific server , red head who works the counter . Owner didn't want to hear my side of the story . I made no such remarks and do NOT like being falsely accused . Red head server at counter is a "one upper " , makes up stories, lies and interrupts peoples conversations. Another customer who shall remain nameless gossips , lies and makes up stories. Disgusting. I would NOT recommend Coffee Cup anymore. And I will not patronize their other restaurant either . Too many other restaurants that will appreciate my business. Good riddance to them !

Google
The food was delicious, scrambled eggs, bacon, 5 pieces! Toast and hash browns, coffee was also delicious. The server was a little slow, I think too many customers and not enough help, but food was worth waiting for, the only big thumbs 👎 would be the bathroom , it was discuting!! Don't think I'll be going back.

Google
What a lovely place to grab a late breakfast. We had been here numerous times when it was previously the Copperdome. The update to the room, opening it up, and the lightening up is an improvement. I'm glad they appear to have kept a lot of the old decor, too. The food was fantastic and the service was so kind and friendly. They appear to be doing a brisk takeout business also. Their portion sizes are huge, and we had enough leftover for dinner as well. They also have some spectacular garlic chive cheese curds, and being from Wisconsin, I'm definitely a connoisseur. We got the giant cinnamon roll, and it was as big as my head. The frosting is heavy on the cream cheese, so if you have a sweet tooth, just be ready for that. We got the chocolate chip three stack pancakes with whipped cream, sides of bacon, and sausage patties. The patties are huge, almost like a half pound burger, and taste delicious. An everything omelet and the ranchers breakfast consisting of two eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and an English muffin rounded out our meal. Coffee was refilled promptly, and everything was delivered hot and quickly. Strong recommendation on a visit. Sorry I didn't get a picture of the giant cinnamon roll!

Yelp
Coffie Cup is one of the best breakfast diners that you will ever eat at great price great quantity and quality of food and amazing people that work there been going there since I was a child and I'm almost 40 years old today. Amazing food.

Yelp
This was a great small town diner in the heart of the city. Breakfast and lunch place. There was a ton of food, (GOOD food) and my husband and I could have shared a plate. We didn't though and it was worth it. The service was friendly, and we got to know another couple of guys sitting across the counter from us. Made me remember how it was back in the day at diners.

Yelp
This is a classic breakfast joint! The food is good and comes out quickly. The service is very friendly and quick. The vibe is very family/friends/ kids friendly. Sometimes on the weekends you can find a pretty long line but it moves quickly.

Yelp
An old school diner which is sort of a cross of old and new. There is a cramped look but the place was busy on a weekday morning. There is no wall menu but all I wanted was coffee and perhaps an easy to take pastry. There is a basket filled with cookies of various types. If you are a picky person and not necessarily a baking aficionado there is no label on the goods. Some people need to know what type of nuts may be used..just saying. People entering seem to know each other and chat with the staff so this is a real neighborhood gathering spot. The coffee was standard restaurant brew but it tasted freshly made and was as hot as it should be. The large cookie was crunchy and a great late morning lift to go with the brew.

Yelp
I don't know who's keeping this place in business, but it won't be me. First and last time ordering. Cajun breakfast came with raw white flavorless hash browns, egg undercooked with whites so disgustingly runny, and CANNED MUSHROOMS. Burnt side of sausages. Embarassing, really. Who the heck is out there using canned mushrooms thinking that's ok? Wtf. Learn how to cook eggs. I don't need to see runny egg whites.

Yelp
Classic old school diner with some updated food options Going in it's a diner. Chrome and Formica, big counter space if you are alone and lots of tables Of course, classic service with coffee cups set at every seat and the staff out with the coffee. Polite and nice staff also Food varies from the classic eggs, hashbowns, sausage, and toast to the more current waffles and chicken I had only 20 minutes so went with the classic eggs toast and sausage. Fast and my eggs were perfect We are looking at homes in the neighborhood and if we do, this will likely be a once a week visit

Yelp
Amazing diner! Once you step into Coffee Cup the ambiance of the diner sucks you back into the 50s. The service is great and the waitress and waiters never let your needs go unserved. The food is outstanding. Everything is reasonably priced and you will need a box before you leave because you get so much food. They have such a diverse menu and I wish I could try every item. I personally love the breakfast burrito because it has so many different flavors and delicious hollandaise sauce. The buttermilk pancakes are nice and fluffy and go great with their maple syrup. I would recommend Coffee Cup to anyone, and will always be on my list of one of the best breakfast diners in the Twin Cities!

John And Rose C.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is great. I have been there many times and my only complaint is the cagin breakfast never has any cagin spice in the hash brown, only a small dash of something red on one egg. There are 5 restaurants within 3 miles of the Coffee Cup that put cagin spice in their meal so you can taste the spice. The servers are friendly and give great service. And a very clean restaurant.

Yelp
A great spot for breakfast in St. Paul! The wait staff is friendly, hard-working and attentive. You'll never be out of coffee unless you want to be! (The downside is that the coffee is very weak and has no taste.) The food is very good and portions are large. Seating ranges from booths to tables to counter. It's definitely a local favorite! We have been here a couple times and will be back!

Casey M.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! Great service, ambience, and quality food. There is even a delicious bakery section.
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Service was excellent and she was very attentive! Make sure you bring a thin jacket or long sleeve because the AC is very strong inside so it can get really cold! Cinnamon roll is huge! It's as big as a plate but their homemade frosting is not as sweet as your typical cinnamon roll. For me it was great since I don't like it as sweet. Churo waffle smells great but only taste ok. The frosting they drizzle on is the same frosting as the one on the cinnamon roll. French toast was more bland so I wished they would sprinkle a bit more cinnamon. Country fried steak I didn't try but I was told it was great and tasted delicious.

Ezra Y.

Yelp
Service is always fast and staff are friendly! I always get a sandwich to go for my lunch and the food is great.

Crissy M.

Yelp
The diner was very clean, the food was amazing and the portions were huge!!! Waitress very nice and never had to wait or ask for anything! Highly recommend this place! Best food we have had since home!

R T.

Yelp
This place used to be great when it was the Randolph griddle. But it went through a remodel which severely decreased the seating. The ambience is very stark and cold. It used to be warm at homey. And the menu got much more expensive. Quality has gone down. Can't recommend anymore.

Barry M.

Yelp
Old school neighborhood Coffee Shop... Great food, large portions. i've had a few of the different breakfast entrées now and they've all been great.

Brandon M.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was good. Nice old school atmosphere. Can't ask for much more. A bit expensive, but what are you gonna do nowadays. One of the better places we have been to for breakfast in the past few years.
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
This is the type of dinner I grew up with. The decor has a little touch of the past. The wait staff is amazing. The food portions are very large and taste fantastic. I came here at the recommendation of a Freind and keep coming back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
You want food that feels like a home cooked meal?? This is the place. New to Minnesota and found this little gem. Service is outstanding, and welcoming. Food is fresh and the servings are filling. This was my second visit and they do not disappoint. The staff is very attentive even with a full house. My coffee cup was always full and hot!

Pauline Y.

Yelp
Came here for a quick bite with my grandson! We had the cream cheese stuffed French toast with berries! Grandson who "doesn't like food" ate every last bite!!

The MargaretEllen S.

Yelp
Best Club Sandwich ever! The waitresses are pleasant and the coffee is nonstop refills throughout the meal! Great restaurant!

Yelp
Coffee Cup is a wonderful "mom & pop" breakfast/lunch restaurant, located on the corner of Randolph and Hamline. Seating ranges from booths to tables to quite a few padded stools ringing the counter. The servers are very attentive and you'll find your coffee cup is never empty! The decor includes dozens and dozens of various signs with memes with hilarious sayings - exactly what you'd expect to find in a place like this. On this particular visit, our three orders included the Everything Omelette, the Denver Omelette, and Strawberry and Cream Cheese Belgian Waffle. This was the second or third time I've ordered the Everything Omelette. It's quite large and stuffed with bacon, sausage, peppers, onions and a side of crispy hash browns and an English muffin. The Denver omelette was equally large and also served with hash browns and a side of toast. My wife's Waffles was crowned with whipped cream and she rated it top notch. I just made me pass that there is a parking lot adjacent to the building and on this particular occasion we found it easy to spot an empty space but other times when it's busy, street parking would be the only other option. We have never been disappointed in the quality of our food, the speed of service, or the value that we paid for our meals when we've been here. Coffee Cup is one of our top choices, especially for breakfast!

Yelp
This place offers a standard diner menu, enormous portions, and very reasonable prices. The service was quick, the restaurant itself is very clean and has plenty of seating. My coffee was perpetually full. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which were delicious. And my kids totally demolished their giant waffles. Minor note: The kids menu pricing needs to be updated on their menus, and the teen cashiers just kinda shrugged when I mentioned the discrepancy between menu and bill.

Yelp
First time here and had a wonderful experience. The atmosphere was nice, our server was a sweetheart. Our coffee mugs were never allowed to empty, always topped off. We shared the chicken & waffles with a side of hash browns. The chipotle syrup that accompanied the chicken & waffles was really nice. The hash browns were a huge portion. Huge. Portion. Like a meal in itself if you love hash browns. I recommend this cute neighborhood cafe/diner to anyone, even those who have to drive nearly 30 min to get there, like I do.
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
Huge portions, fast service & delicious food! Took my little brother here for some breakfast. We shared the Eggs Bennie & Everything Omelette. Also Shared a pancake. Had a lot of leftovers. Almost 1/2 of each of our meals left. Would definitely go here again.

Yelp
I decided on some breakfast take out today from the Coffee Cup on Randolph. First time at this location although I've been going to the original on Rice and Arlington my whole life. My grandparents lived a few blocks away and my BFF growing up, her step dad was an investor in the place in the early 80's for a spell, I'm not sure if he's still involved because he's no longer her stepdad. Anyways, the food is so classic "diner." Everything is really good, from the hot turkey, to the pork chop, turkey and Swiss omelette (which for some reason works), a patty melt, liver and onions for those like it, to my favorite, the Greek omelette. The photo doesn't do it justice, it was huge and beautiful! The bag weighed about five pounds. And it's tasty! Just as good as I remember it. The egg fluffy and just the combo of the gyro meat, the Tzatziki sauce and the feta is such a pleasant tartness, I forget how much I love those flavors. I'll be back, there are some new things on the menu! The Greek and veggie burgers, along with eggs Benedict, cream cheese stuffed French toast, and I really want to try the Cajun breakfast! Check it out! Made with love for the neighborhood

Yelp
Hands down my favorite spot in the twin cities; my dad had been going here since before I was born! I usually get the breakfast sampler which fills me all day! I have not found a single thing I don't like; the ladies are super helpful and have been super attentive to clean up my table which is nice change to other places! Old school diner with amazing food!
google avatar

Joanne P.

Yelp
This was a good spot to check out breakfast. We had a ranch meal and the turkey and swiss omelet. The portions are huge. The food needed more seasoning, the eggs were overcooked. They had plenty of seating, a seat yourself vibe. I believe there was aomw training going on during our visit which made sense. There is side and street parking. They have two unisex restrooms, a litte outdated but clean. The service was ok.
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Super cute little diner. The service was super fast and the portions were insanely large. I thought it was very reasonably priced. I always get country fried steak when I see it on the menu so I was stoked to see that here. The flavors didn't knock my socks off and the orange juice was from one of those concentrate machines so it was super sugary.
google avatar

Yelp
The only restaurant I've visited 2x's in a week since moving into the neighborhood. Breakfast is the Coffee Cup's sweet spot. A huge choice of offerings and something to fit anyone's tastes. The classic breakfast of eggs, potatoes, and side of breakfast meat is available in so many iterations that it could make your head spin. They also have pancakes, waffles and more. The portions are generous, service is friendly, and the food is very tasty. Expect it to be busy, especially at breakfast but know that food arrives promptly and dirty tables are turned quickly. I also ordered a takeout Reuben from the Coffee Cup and it was delicious. I had to eat half of it at their outside tables because I was so excited to give it a try. One bonus, the person taking my order let me know of the variety of sides available with the sandwich and when she said hash browns I was thrilled. All in all, the Reuben was a great example of the sandwich in a neighborhood with the bar set very high by Cecils.

Gaea G.

Yelp
Ordered vegetarian omelet. Ticket says no meats... got home and full of meat. Called in and they can't do anything. Do not recommend for vegetarian diners at all
google avatar

Yelp
I think we found our regular lazy weekend morning breakfast place! There was a good mix of clientele here early on a Sunday. Seemed like a lot of regulars that have been going here for some time, some young high school kids, some people finishing up the night shift, and even some newbies like us! :) The wait staff were kind and attentive. The food is plentiful and not overpriced. Oh how I wish the cheese was something other than American slices! That would be the icing on the cake. Really enjoyed breakfast here and love the variety of breakfast staples and elevated takes on the classics.
google avatar

Michele H.

Yelp
YES!! I have officially found the best turkey club sandwich in the Twin Cities. It is one of my favorite things to order and they got it just right. The order arrived on time and correct through Door Dash. The sandwich had the perfect ratio of fillings to bread and the bread was lightly toasted. So tasty and I will absolutely be ordering it again. The onion rings on the side were good too! Fresh and hand battered and portion size was huge.
google avatar

Susan K W.

Yelp
Great to see this neighborhood place remodeled and busy. The staff are very friendly and efficient and definitely keep the coffee coming. The portions are huge. The downside: the food is just fair. American cheese in a mostly onions and green peppers omelet; needed seasoning. Biscuits were doughy and fairly tasteless. And not the place for 'good' (eg Starbucks, espresso) coffee . But you'll enjoy yourself and wont complain that your portion was too small.

Ettica M.

Yelp
The coffee cup was a staple of Saint Paul it started on Rice st. unfortunately a fire hit them. Now they have relocated to Randolph and Hamline Ave. so far things work great we got exactly what we were looking for and if you look at the first page of their website generous portions is what they stood by. This last Friday.10/25 I ordered my husband his breakfast burrito that weighed about 5 lbs in my order of hashbrowns because I am a semi-vegetarian which weighed 2lbs. this am I semi vegetarian, I picked up my order in the box felt super light. Upon further inspection, they gave me 1/4 of my normal order so when I went back in the first thing, I noticed there was no Mi gente working. It was a whole different crew which I would thought since it's a Sunday and probably everybody went to church.. These people were rude they Spoke Arabic over me like I did not understand their words, even though I have family from Palestine. The manager came out and said that this is the new portions because of e you I just ordered Friday today is Sunday.. I they think we have money up here but we don't have it like they think we do asked for my money back. I went home and made my own a coffee cup is changing ppl of St. Paul. I don't know if they think they're up in Highland Park/ Mac grove area
google avatar

Shelbie C.

Yelp
Waitress was amazing and sweet. We couldn't bring our dog to the outside seating bc she was alone but she gave us a piece of bacon for him small line at 6am! This is a quantity first type place. Huge portions. Omelets are stuffed full even with gyro meat so they don't skimp on that and if you are a hash brown person you get a giant portion. Pancakes are the size of your head. However one star off bc the oil tasted very stale and old. I couldn't eat my hash browns bc of that. Coffee is endless for 2.75. Breakfast for 4 with three coffees and tip was 73$. Not cheap but we are coming home with half our omlets and half the pancakes.
google avatar

Ralph M.

Yelp
With this new peak in COVID cases it's looking like a lot more curbside and delivery in our future. This can make it easy to start hitting up more fast food chains, drive thru lines, etc. Fight the urge! Plenty of places you can support local by checking their websites for their curbside protocols. Or simply calling them and placing a to-go order like I did this morning. Not all of them have the luxury of online ordering. This mom and pop staple in St Paul is offering up the best in diner style grub. They don't have an Instagram page so check them out at coffeecupstpaul.com What I ordered: Sausage, Egg, and Cheese breakfast sammie on TX toast w/ extra crispy hash browns. They are currently offering safe, distanced dine-in service and call to order to-go.
google avatar

Kira S.

Yelp
Food was very good! The waitstaff was also very friendly and had good recommendations. The inside is newly renovated it seems so everything looks nice. They are popular for their French toast which is amazing. The prices are also super reasonable for the amount/quality of food you get!
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
While I truly miss the Copper Dome of years past, the Coffee Cup is a good replacement. I always enjoyed going to the original Coffee Cup on Rice and Arlington, but this one is a bit more modern and maybe not as greasy (which I don't mind). Portions are very generous. Today, I had the turkey and Swiss omelet. I could have easily split it with the hubs. Lucky for me, I have enough left for a second breakfast (note: the omelet also came with a hefty portion of hashbrowns and 4 slices of toast). Hubs had a roast beef eggs Benedict and he loved it. The eggs were poached perfectly and he enjoyed the beef. His only complaint was that the English muffin was a little soggy, but he got over it. Would highly recommend coming hungry and/or be prepared to take a bit home.

Brett D.

Yelp
I really liked the menu as a family restaurant because there were plenty of options for everyone to find something they like. However the food itself seems to be quantity over quality. The serving sizes are huge, but the taste is pretty average. It's a great atmosphere for a family diner. It feels like Sunday dinner and the area is kept very clean. We've had good experiences with the servers here and the staff has always been nice.
google avatar

Brett C.

Yelp
A great place to wind up for breakfast! As soon as you look in you see it's busy! Servers are flying around and food is getting out! The service is a little slow but that's mainly a factor of how busy this place is and not an issue at all! Furthermore the food is delicious and the portions are heaping. First place I've been to in a while where I feel like I'm getting a great price on some great food. The entire restaurant is clean as can be with the faintest smell of cleanliness coming from the kitchen, but never overpowering the smell of fresh baked biscuits! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
So happy to have discovered this new-to-me breakfast spot! It perfectly scratches the itch for a casual but still nice diner, and the food was delicious. Good spot to bring kids too, my 2 year old was happy with the crayons and coloring pages they provide! Docked a star for service, but they did seem shorthanded. Either way, we'll be back!
google avatar

Kevin H.

Yelp
Best breakfast and awesome service every time. I had the gyros breakfast sandwich. So so good.
google avatar

Rhonda G.

Yelp
I love the omelets, especially mushroom cheese. They always have holiday specials. Next up is corned beef and cabbage that I always get for St. Patrick's day.

Grace H.

Yelp
Run don't walk to get the chili omelette. Seriously changed my life. I would eat this chili on anything.

Yelp
Dipped into St. Paul from LA to see my folks. Walked in to the joint, greeted quickly, sat down, ordered, food came quick. Lots of food. The waitress was attentive. I forgot to take pictures of the before and of the menu. Will be back. I love this place. Thanks Kuz
google avatar

Yelp
Cute yummy little local spot. It used to be the old copper dome they've revamped it to be very kitschy. Great every thing. Waitress friendly, food came out quick and was very tasty. Cute little must try spot!

Yelp
I'll update this ASAP but opening morning was a 2 for service and a 4.5 for both food and bringing the neighborhood together on a Wednesday morning. My personal opinion is that other early Yelper could have a tad more patience and grace for a literally day-old neighborhood small business. The diner looks amazing. The chairs and booths are comfortable. The coffee is terrific. I had a Greek omelette and bialy- superb. Portions are huge and the food was all fresh. My date had sausage, eggs and browns. Really good, too. One way to look at the delays on day 1 is that there's room for improvement. In fact that is just what the cashier told us they'd be focused on when they thanked us for our patience and support. The first50 gift card (as promised) and complimentary coffee (surprise!) didn't hurt either. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Randy K.

Yelp
My wife and I had a terrific breakfast at The Coffee Cup this morning. Eggs made exactly as we ordered, 5 pieces of nicely done bacon, and the best hash-browns around. Service from Sarah B was also great -- friendly, attentive, very welcoming. The menu was very extensive. The only reason we didn't rate this place a "5" was the freezing air-conditioning. We've been coming here for years, and this is the first time we froze. We will come back, but sit outside.

Yelp
Stopped today after a Dr appt and was pleasantly surprised by the complete redo of the space. What an upgrade from when it was the Copper Dome! I guess the customers agree, because the place was full. Anyway, great menu, excellent breakfast and a wonderful waitress - Emily V. This is quite a distance from our neighborhood, but worth the trip, as far as I am concerned.
