26 Detroit Cafes Serving Great Cups of Coffee

"Located in a spot literally “down under” a building in downtown’s Financial District, Coffee Down Under is pouring coffee brewed with Australian roaster Proud Mary’s beans. Walter Pat’s Bakery supplies snacks including hand pies. In the evening, the cafe space is a false entrance to modern speakeasy Shelby." - Serena Maria Daniels

8 of the Best New Coffee Shops in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Coffee Down Under just happens to occupy a basement spot, but its name is a nod to the Down Under. This Australian-style coffee bar opened in the Financial District in a 400-square-foot space right before the pandemic hit, with espresso roasts from Proud Mary Cafe, a Melbourne-based company. There also are Australian refreshments, including the long black, which is created by pouring a double-shot of espresso or ristretto over hot water. From the coffee to cups and toilet paper, the cafe puts sustainability at the forefront." - Monica Williams

Cute concept and easy to find. As soon as you walk in, there is a sign and animal prints on the floor to show you it's downstairs. The person working was helpful in explaining the difference between the coffee options.

Coffee Down Under is a trendy, quaint gem run by Miranda that truly stands out. It’s the perfect spot to relax, dive into a book, and enjoy an excellent cup of coffee. The vibe is crafty and cozy, making it a great escape from the hustle and bustle. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend stopping by—this place has everything you need for a peaceful coffee break.

Google
The coffee section was good, the baristas were amazing but the one star is for the white lady with black hair that was at the vault door for the bar entrance. She was very cold, rude and off putting. I wanted to come back to experience the actual bar but I don’t want to see her again so bad that I’m not interested in returning. If I do she’s getting the same energy returned.

A tiny coffee place located in the basement of the building friendly server and decent coffee. Would recommend people try it instead of the Starbucks across the street.

I stopped in today because I stumbled upon this cute little spot. I was incredibly happy in all areas. The space is so perfect, it’s not very big inside at all but it doesn’t really need to be. Most people grabbing coffee in town are in and out with things to do. The person greeted us promptly and made a perfectly warmed hot chocolate for my son which he very much enjoyed. He loved the latte art so much. My mother and I had Carmel lattes and they were the best I’ve had honestly ever. They were very good conversation while making the drinks as well. My fiancé is jealous and we will be stopping in again very soon.

Miriam was so nice yesterday! The vegan muffin was delicious and the lemonade was just the refresher we needed. I love that they have chairs and tables outside (about 3) Thank you so much!

Google
Coffee down under is located inside the Michigan Bank Building, and it is down under. It is clearly labeled, and it is very tiny inside. There are a few tables and chairs at street level. The pumpkin chai tea was very good, they use real pumpkin. If you like your hot drinks hot you'll have to ask for it to be extra hot, mine was warm and cooled off very quickly. You can find the speak easy Shelby connected to this place. The batista (during the day) hostess (at night) was very friendly and positive.

Hidden gem in Detroit! I love the barista Ayana! She works with you on your drink choice. I got a Latte with vanilla, maple and a dash of cinnamon. Highly recommend this place and it's open late too

Yelp
Wow! What a cool little spot tucked away in a basement. After a meal in Greektown we took a walk through the city and decided to locate coffee. Unfortunately or in our case fortunately all the corporate opportunities were closed at 8pm on a Wednesday...so I googled and this spot popped up. So we strolled about 2 blocks to Shelby street and found the destination. The place is nicely decorated and comfy, the menu offers all the basic good stuff as well as some sweet pastries to accompany. We all grabbed a different beverage of choice and we were all completely satisfied. Well prepared, quality ingredients and efficient pleasant service. Definitely will be back for a Java fix real soon.

Yelp
We stopped in before heading to the Riverwalk to explore. I got the Rose latte... I thought it was great. Not too sweet but sweet enough. We chatted with the barista for a bit and she gave us some tips on where to go and check out. She was very nice. The place is located under the Hanah restaurant. It was very small and had maybe 6 seats if you wanted to hang out. We parked on the street - there was a few10-15 min pick up parking spots you could use.

Yelp
Quiet little nook, pretty easily to get at but always prefer a brighter space. I get the concept but it's a coffee shop in a basement.

Yelp
Came to Detroit for the draft, and this was the worst coffee shop someone could go to. The staff is rude and unprofessional. One staff member even punched a customer; sure hope he sues them. Please be aware of dealing with pompous staff who have no regards for their customers. You can spend your money somewhere better than this place.

Yelp
Cute out of the way place under the stairs. Nothing lie any of the chain shops, so don't arrive expecting that. Chat with the barista and let them help you choose. This place isn't big but it does have some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. The cappuccino was top notch! If you're a local and never visited, why not? If you're a visitor, track this place down. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is hard to find but I realized it is a speakeasy where you can get into the bar called shelby. What a fun surprise and the place is really intimate and seems like a renovated vault bank! I enjoyed coming here with my coworkers and the server was really well versed with the different drinks they offer! I got the flower one called mademoiselle. The price is what you would expect at the bar and next time I will try the food :)

Yelp
Teeny tine basement coffee houses are the best!! If you find yourself hiking around Detroit in need of a quick pick me up I highly recommend dropping by the Coffee Down Under and have Tiara make you a smooth and delicious flat white! A work of art! For an extra adventure ask about Shelby the hidden speakeasy....

Yelp
I love coming here. It's in such a cool spot, hidden away. The coffee is good and there's usually no wait. The space is small but they also have a few seats at the bar.

Laura S.

Yelp
Amazing experience, the raspberry matcha was heaven. I still think about it. Also the atmosphere is cute and unique.

Yelp
Australian coffee culture is a bit different from US coffee culture and I love that we get a cuppa in the Mitt! Generally Oz coffee is a bit strong (as it's espresso-based) in smaller sizes - small but mighty and still packs a wallop! The flat white is probably the most popular "export" to the US and that's exactly what I got here! It didn't disappoint! The beans here are from Proud Mary, which is nice to switch it up. I saw that there were some pastries from Ochre as well. Cute space, a couple of bar stools for seating but it's more of a grab & go spot.
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
Coffee Down Under is a coffee on brand. They serve (strong) Australian coffee in the basement of a downtown building. It's coffee from down under down under. When you arrive at the address, open the glass door and go left down the stairs. The stairs run into the barista where you'll order your latte or flat white to go (most likely). There is a small wall table with a few stools, but the small space encourages most people to grab their coffee and go. The coffee itself was tasty and strong. A fun tidbit about this coffee shop is there's a speakeasy (The Shelby) in the back!

Yelp
Coffee down Under is a cool spot for a quick coffee, prices are relatively cheap and it's a no fuss spot. There is a small amount of seating, but not great to stop and study. The baristas are always sweet and are the hosts to the cool speakeasy (Shelby) just down the hallway. The cool thing about Coffee Down under is that it's open late, so you can get your caffeine fix at any time.

Yelp
Coffee was good... but too popular. Looking for somewhere more underground... Might move to NYC idk...

Yelp
Stopped by during Automate 2022 and this little gem was def worth the visit. They're located inside another building but just follow the signs and head "down under". Space/seating is a bit limited but everyone seemed to have a great vibe. This local joint offers your typical menu items, fair prices, and also coffee beans/merch to-go. I just ordered a couple of cold brews and they definitely hit the spot. The barista was very knowledgeable and friendly to offer suggestions since it was my first time. Highly recommend this coffee shop if you're around the area- support local!

Yelp
A newcomer to the coffee desert in this area of Downtown Detroit, this cute spot is partially hidden... You'll find Coffee Down Under by following the neon coffee sign once inside the double doors and heading down the stairs. Albeit small, this local joint serves up solid espresso (in biodegradable cups). They carry the usual alternative milks (including oat) and the baristas are friendly and super helpful. Near the Detroit Foundation Hotel, on the corner of Shelby and Congress, it's a very convenient location if you're in the area for a daily cup of joe.

Yelp
Sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, quick service. Coffee down under is a gem in Detroit. I got a ristretto mocha - very smooth and tasty. I 100% recommend stopping in. There's also 10 min parking in-front if tropical smoothie near the building.

Yelp
Cute little gem tucked away in the historic banking district of Detroit. Super clean and memorable aesthetic b&w with accents in a bright bold blue. Great coffee with tons of flavor and milk options as well as incredible service from the owner herself. Lots of street parking just right outside with blue tables in multiple areas to sit at when you walk closer to the building. We love that it is called Down Under because they have beans sourced from Australia! Such a great name for this place too as it is located in the lower level. Definitely worth trying because once you go, you will be back again! & that is a promise

Yelp
When I saw there was an Australian inspired coffee shop, I jumped at the opportunity to try it out. Especially since it was so close to my hotel. This place hits the spot in all the best ways. Great beans, a beautiful machine, and crafted with expert execution. The barista was super friendly, offering great suggestions and insight, and the shop is cute and inviting with a clean modern aesthetic. For those like me, they also have oat milk and what looked like very tasty salted chocolate chip cookies. Full disclosure: I've been twice already today and it's highly likely I'll be back first thing tomorrow.

Yelp
Friendly baristas, great coffee, a secret blue door to The Shelby. A light, airy vibe with fancy mugs and things for sale, top-notch coffee. It is a bit expensive, though it was perfect. $7 for a 12 oz latte with oat milk. I like that you can order on the app and it's ready when you arrive - I'm sure it can get crowded in the small space during peak times. No seating available inside, but there are a couple of blue tables and chairs outside if you'd like to sit and sip.

Yelp
Support your local coffee shop! Got a delicious maple cold brew from this cute little spot. Totally recommend this place over the overrated big chains nearby!

Yelp
Found this place while parking in Downtown Detroit. Seems pretty cool that it's a coffee shop down stairs of the building it's in. Supposedly, this is named after an Australian term but it's amazing that it also happens to be 'down under' physically. I tried their iced mocha latte and was pleased. Great owner/worker as the barista. The flavor was good, and the prices are fair.

Yelp
A very cool little Australian cafe located in the basement of a historic building in downtown Detroit. The coffee is top notch and their teas are also awesome. The stock a limited range of fresh-roasted coffee beans to take home and Keep Cups as well. Service was not amazing, nor is the food selection (cakes and breads only) but will forgive that. Definitely worth checking it out.

Yelp
I used Yelp to find a late nite coffee shop. Not only did I find a great tasting decaffeinated latte I had excellent friendly service. Marian provided the best tasting latte I have ever had. My only disappointment is that it is geared more to take out because there is very limited seating. Also, would really appreciate if they would offer almond milk as an option. It has less sugar

Yelp
The coffee was Phenomenal! The barista knew how to make coffee and was very friendly! Definitely in the top 5 coffee shops in detroit! Very impressed
google avatar

Yelp
Had a wonderful coffee here! The only downside was limited seating, but the coffee (latte) was great. This is a cute place.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good coffee in a quaint little space. I ordered a half caf vanilla iced latte and it was delicious. The barista was friendly and the place was very clean and had minimalist vibes.

Yelp
Looking for wonderfully strong coffee? This might be the place for you. When I started working in the area, I knew I had to find a coffee shop as an occasional treat and upgrade from office coffee. Coffee Down Under is perfect. It's a small space, but that's okay because I always grab my drink to go. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I haven't treated myself to any of the baked goods, but they always look quite tempting.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool little coffee shop. Was looking for a good coffee after dinner with friends visiting from over seas. Flat white was excellent. Price was very fair. Barista was very pleasant. Also cool things to see when you stop by even though the place is small. If you're in the area you should check it out for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee and great atmosphere. Was visiting from out of town and was super happy they stay open late. When I go back I'll def be sure to visit again

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Scrumptious pastries. Great staff. Highly recommend this place, and be sure to get a pastry!

Yelp
Best Coffee ever! Stopped in with 20 people, took some time, but we'll worth it! Coffee and espressos were top notch
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee Down Under is a chic spot to quickly snag your cup o' Joe for the day. It's so easy to run in and out if you've can't linger, but there are cute bar stools if you are hoping to stay. The menu is not overwhelming and the barista was very informative about each item if you ask questions. We learned that there is a speakeasy attached to this cute niche too. So cool!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot, love to see proud Mary in Detroit. But I do have to say the service was pretty shitty. The guy had no interest in serving me anything but an Americano, anything he could do to not work hard at all. Pretty much started to shut down the shop two hours before closing and shut down the bathroom as well. It sucks that cooler shops like this have crappy personnel working them.

Michelle E.

Yelp
Worst customer service ever. Came in with no reservations on a Friday at 6pm. There were 4 of us so we expected a wait. We were told it would take 30-45 minutes but the hostess. Great no problem we go to the waiting area upstairs. At the time there was a party of 3 in front of us. After 45 minutes 2 people from our party went to check on how much longer after seeing at least 30 parties of 2 enter the bar and be seated. We were told "another 30- 45 minutes" which ok we will wait but this time we waiting in front of your face just waiting. By 7:50 we asked to speak with manager after the main HOSTESS WHO STARED US IN THE FACE HAD NOTHING TO SAY. After waiting for hours with no text or anything the manager decided to say "sorry we usually don't take walk-ins on the weekend." So why let us wait for 2 hours when there was no line? The customer service is abysmal. How do you expect to keep any customer happy when you let them wait for hours with NO COMMUNICATION?? Make it make sense. As someone who worked as a hostess telling customers what the situation is KEY!! The hostess had unique glasses with half a frame and the manager was no help. As 4 gainfully employed nurses with disposable income ON VACATION I hope they knows their decision to act like we don't matter cost them a nice bill. 10 out of 10 DO NOT recommend!

Yelp
Perfect. In and out. Great coffee. Nice and helpful guy behind the bar. Place serves the purpose: great espresso drinks (didn't try the drip), modern fresh and simple look, and spotless. Early on a Sat am, (with interesting music that embraces that hour) so happy they are open.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Great spot! Drinks are awesome. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and inviting. The environment is very cool. I would highly recommend.

Will M.

Yelp
I'm not a coffee drinker but have loved every other drink they've had on the menu. Matcha, Chai, and Hot Chocolate are all amazing. Awesome location and fun staff to hang out with. And every friend I go with says it's some of the best coffee they've had in the city!
