The Best Restaurants and Bars to Visit in Astoria, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Charming to visitors and residents alike, Coffee Girl has one of the most scenic river views in town — perched out on Pier 39 in Astoria’s Uppertown district on the east side. Occupying a building that formerly housed the historic Bumble Bee cannery on the Columbia River, it’s open seven days a week with a menu of espresso drinks, pastries, and savory dishes like quiche and soups. It’s an ideal place to take family who are in town for a weekend (the complex has not only views of ships but also a cannery museum and fish market) or to work in a quiet corner. The long deck overlooking the river still functions as a dock, so occasionally you’ll see a boat pulling up." - Jennifer Burns Bright

Google
Recommended by a friend as the best views for a coffee lover- and they were pretty spot on. This is such a fun place to grab a hot coffee in the morning and overlook the river. The food (with the exception of the pastries) is made to order. I got myself a parfait and it was packed with various kinds of fruits and berries- perfect for a day of hiking. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside while you are waiting for your order to be ready. The staff were super kind and could tell were super busy. Even for how busy it was, it was still very peaceful and enjoyable. The coffee is delicious and made for the perfect start to our day. A go-to for people passing through Astoria.

Google
At the outside end of pier 39. You get to drive out onto the pier over rickety planks and everything. Very cool to visit. It's the old Bumblebee fish cannery and now has shops restaurants and some small local businesses inside. Great coffee shop with bagels and pastries etc. THE BEST right up front view of the river in Astoria. Small outside seating area where they used to unload fish. Nice inside area for the usual weather. Nice friendly staff!

Starting our mornings with Coffee Girl on the pier was amazing. Stop in for their friendly staff, tasty cappuccinos, and yummy baked goods (I want to take a toteful of their breakfast cookies home with me)! Best of all the soundtrack and views of the river, the barking sea lions, and the purring pigeons is endlessly entertaining.

The line moved quickly and the cashier (I wish I had gotten his name, but male/mid-late20s?) was super pleasant. Our food was excellent. I don’t drink coffee (gasp), but my husband did and said it was great. The atmosphere was perfect! If you love a good walk, park at the Riverwalk Trail trailhead! I mean, it would’ve been a lovely walk without seeing a bald eagle along the way, but that sure made it extra special! The cannery museum and the historical artifacts on river boats were amazing! We will definitely return on our next visit to the area!

Coffee Girl holds a very special place in my heart. It is by far my favorite coffee shop of all time. I go there every time I am on the north coast, not even specifically in Astoria, on the north coast in general. I ALWAYS end my trip with a coffee and treat from Coffee Girl. Their coffee, teas and Italian sodas are always excellent. The pastries and other treats are all home made and absolutely delicious. There is always something new! My all time favorite menu item is the Bagel and Carrot Lox. I have tried to recreate it at home, but it just isn’t the same. It so wonderful to grab your drink and treat and go sit out on the dock and watch all the boats and wildlife move by. It’s equally as relaxing to sit inside on a rainy day and enjoy the ambience. Wandering around Pier 39 in general is so much fun! Coffee Girl is an Absolute MUST if you are visiting Astoria!

Google
Friendliest people work here. They were greeting everyone by name and knew their drinks. Lattes were great. And the location can NOT be beat. On the water. We saw seals and bald eagles. Absolutely loved this spot!

Google
I love Coffee Girl! We love to sit outside and look out at the water while we drink our coffee. The service is always amazing and everyone is so nice and accommodating. The drinks and snacks are super good too.

Google
Awesome staff, fresh food, & great coffee. What more could one ask for? How about a dramatic view of the river mouth! We cannot wait to go back, so get there before we do as you will not be disappointed!!!

Yelp
Good coffee and service at a very reasonable price. Oh and it had a great view of the Columbia!

Yelp
Coffee Girl is in Astoria's Pier 39, by the original Bumblebee Cannery Museum. The coffee and drink selection is great and they make great tasting coffee . They also have a large selection of sweet and savory treats as well as breakfast sandwiches and paninis. There is ample room to sit/stay and enjoy your coffee/food... many of the tables have river view windows and weather permitting, there is outdoor seating as well. The service is very good, but be patient if you order sandwiches as they are made to order fresh and could take a little while.

Yelp
Love local coffee places. I have been to Astoria as a teen many times and as an adult every year for the past 5 years, I did not even know this place was here. Asked the barista how long they have been at Pier 39 and she said going on 15 years. When you say hidden local gem this is what they mean. Stayed at the Hampton Inn next door and only when I was going to dinner did I see the sign by the road. Walked there in the morning when they opened up to get a coffee and scone. I got a drink of the month "A Silent Discovery" and it was really good. I wanted to go back and get " Red, White & Royal Blue l" but my first patient came early. Also got a peaches & cream and Apricot lemon scone. My doctor picked out the apricot so I ate the peach. It was so good and I found a little surprise in the white chocolate chips in the scones. Or was a nice touch as I love white chocolate. The glaze on top of the scone was not too sweet like most and added a nice texture to the scone. Perfect hidden gem you must try if you are in or going through Astoria OR and need a pick me up or jump start to your day.

Yelp
My family and I were visiting Astoria, Oregon. This coffee shop was our destination as we all got our preferred drinks and sat by the Columbia river and just watched the ships go by. It was a beautiful day and the drinks were wonderful and I highly recommend this place for a coffee break.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Cute place. Long line. Great coffee. Amazing location (and views). Worth a pop-in if you have a few extra minutes to get your morning coffee fix.
google avatar

Cindee E.

Yelp
The best scone we ever had had this trip! Maple/bacon heated up a bit. It was buttery and so good. Had a dirty chai to go along with it. Fast service. We sat outside and watched the ships go by.

Yelp
Any chance I get, I stop by this amazing coffee shop- which has become my fave coffee shop in quite possibly the whole world lol! Their coffee concoctions are flawless, breakfast sandwiches delicious, service and staff friendly and warm, and vibe and views just awesome! Not to mention historical - this coffee shop has been serving coffee from the same counter all the way back to the cannery workers on their breaks over 100 years ago! I almost always find an irresistible coffee creation on their monthly specialty menu - and July was no different!! Their "Mountain Hike" latte was so good I got it twice! It's chocolate and huckleberry and wow - so much huckleberry!! Excellent flavor combo and balance of each. And the coffee art is very skilled and always a treat. I almost always get some version of their "breakfast" bagel or panini...which has cheddar, egg, ham, and CREAM CHEESE yessss! It's rich but ohhh so good - on vacay you go big or go home right?? This sandwich is over the top decadent and delicious. I've also tried several of their sweet treats and all are excellent as well - especially the brown sugar coconut chocolate bars - heaven! And massive - took me three days to finish it off. Inside the shop is cozy any time of year, with bucolic color schemes, cute windows and a fireplace. But outside is what you're really here for - those expansive views of the Columbia River and huge ships coming and going with all sorts of birds swirling around - what better way to enjoy starting your day?! The issue is that I get lulled into spending more time here than I intend so be warned LOL! The shop is located at the end of a historic pier with other interesting shops, restaurants and a museum. Coffee Girl also has lots of historic photos and info signs itself. They also offer a great variety of merch - on this visit I got a hoodie and hat - both are fantastic quality and made for some awesome souvenirs. As if you couldn't tell, I love it here and will definitely visit anytime I get a chance!

Yelp
Very cute spot in Astoria. Great location to order some coffee, breakfast, and sit back and enjoy the water views. We came on a Saturday morning around 10:30am (probably waited 10-15 mins to order and another 25-30 mins for our food). If you're in a hurry look for another spot but if you have the time I would highly recommend. Coffee was tasty and so were the pastries and breakfast panini.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't wait to visit Coffee Girl the next time I'll be in Astoria! Beautiful ocean view at the deck. The oat milk latte was delicious and affordable compared to prices. $5.50 for a 16oz latte. The pastries and desserts looked delicious. Love how the special drinks in June were dedicated to transformative leaders.
google avatar

Yelp
Driving over the scary, but sturdy, wooden pier was quite the experience but way worth it. Great coffee, pastries, and bagels. Staff was friendly and personable. Laidback vibe that I sat and enjoyed for probably too long but didn't feel any pressure to finish me coffee and leave. If you sit outside, keep and eye on the pigeons. They're pretty fearless and will fly up on your table to get your food.

Yelp
Another visit to Astoria means another visit to my favorite coffee house. Yes, the outdoor deck is right on the water. With the sea lions barking away from the next pier over, the ambiance can't be beat. Never had their lunch menu items but their baked goods and pastries are just so good! Today's choice was the tropical cake. With my dirty chai, it was perfect to spend a few moments in peace. Till the next visit.

Yelp
Stunning views of the Columbia from pier 39. Coffee Girl is a perfect coffeehouse with charming ambiance, good merchandise, and outstanding coffee with stellar service. The line can be long but it's worth the wait. We just had coffee--which was delicious. The food looked and smelled great. We'll be back when we're in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun location on the water. You drive onto the dock via a one-lane wooden bridge (you can see if a car is on it going the opposite direction, if so you have to wait). It reminded me of the coffee houses that were ubiquitous in the late 90's grunge era. Same buzzy energy. It had quite the selection of pastries and sweets available, along with some sandwich options. My chai was amazing, perfectly spiced and sweetened and topped with an amazing tight milk foam. The quiche was very good as well. Lemon and Coconut bars were a bit heavy on the shortbread and the filling/toppings were a bit too dry and mild for my liking but the German Chocolate cake was very moist and delicious.
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
Wonderful latte and wonderful staff! So friendly and a great place to sit next to the water and relax in the morning. They do a lot of different seasonal specials and you can order from other months. I got a drink called "The Mountain Hike" which is a huckleberry mocha. You can't get more Oregon than that!
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Such a cute place, and one infused with history! I loved the old picture on the wall. Service was quick and friendly even though it was busy. I ordered a slice of mango bread on our first visit, and it was really good. Moist and flavorful, I was disappointed when they didn't have it on our second visit. However, they did have a strawberry lemon loaf, which was even better. Deliciously tart and sweet at the same time. I ordered a ham, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. It was good, except for the ham. It seemed like packaged lunch meat. I ordered the ham and cheese quiche the next day, and it was my least favorite of everything I tried at the Coffee Girl. It was dry and crumbly.

Yelp
Located in the old Bumble Bee Tuna Cannery building on Pier 39, Coffee Girl is an amazing place to enjoy your morning coffee, a tasty treat, and watch the barges wait to port in the Columbia River. The shop is inviting with cute little plants lining the windowsills, bright orange walls, an unparalleled view of the Columbia River, and friendly service. Grab yourself a cup of coffee and a tasty treat. They have scones, breads, dessert bars, quiches, paninis, and even Fruit Loops for the kids. There is seating inside and outside on the pier overlooking the river. If you sit outside, just watch out for the bird scavengers! One little guy helped himself to part of my cherry pie bar! Coffee Girl is one of my favorite places to have coffee on the coast!

Yelp
What a cute little coffee shop in Astoria. We found this on Yelp but it was also recommended by a friend who is local. The coffee and pastries were delicious, employees were friendly. What gets you here js the view. You can sit on the dock outside and drink your coffee and watch the boats and water. The pigeons here have no manners though, they have clearly been fed a lot. :)
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
This place is great. Set in the back of former cannery. Counter service was a bit slow but worth the wait. Lox on an everything bagel was decadent. We are used to capers but they give you marinated cucumbers instead and they hit the spot. So good! Veggie quiche was light and filling at the same time. Vanilla bean scone was the best we've ever had. Also got a delicious snickerdoodle for our road trip to Portland and that too was soft chewy goodness. Grab your coffee and breakfast and sit on the edge of the river, it was the perfect simple breakfast. Side note: There's a small museum to walk through about the cannery. A few stores for gifts. Great way to start the morning in Astoria.
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
Yes, you drive ON the pier to get here. Parking and turning around can be tight. You can also park on land and walk up or ride the Astoria trolley and skip parking altogether. Coffee Girl is a magical place where your latte still comes in a big white cup and saucer. Indoor seating area has eclectic tables and chairs. Large windows give beautiful natural light and a great view of the water. Outdoor seating is available right over the water. The food is delicious and the baristas are friendly and, best of all, on point with the drinks. Everyone is always so sweet and they all seem genuinely happy to be there. You will find locals and visitors alike in this beloved cafe.

Mackenzie L.

Yelp
Absolutely love the location and food at coffee girl. The staff are absolutely incredible and always kind. My husband got the yogurt plate and I ended up getting the breakfast quiche and it was incredible. The espresso tasted a little burnt but I assumed it was the bean- so if that's the flavor you go for that's what they had. This was also one of the first places I've been in that knew exactly how to make a true cappuccino.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy to have found this place. The drive over the pier was worth it alone. The whole vibe and atmosphere was great, friendly staff, outdoor seating, and the food was very reasonably priced and delicious! -Greek Panini: 5/5, simple ingredients but this was cooked to perfection. So good, highly recommend. We also got a two different scones which were also really delicious. The view is unbeatable and you'll see plenty of sea lions swimming by. Great spot and we'll be back before our departure!
google avatar

Denise A.

Yelp
History, great coffee, outstanding cranberry lemon scone and ham quiche. Sit inside or out on the dock.
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
Was so good that we went back and ordered about the same things. I had the everything bagel with cream cheese and lox. We agreed that the lox was the best we ever had. It was sliced thin and smoked just enough. It was not slimy or had any lateral line. The restaurant is located right on the Columbia river with a nice view. The building was an old cannery where Bumblebee Tuna started. There is a small cannery museum and fishing boats that you can view for free. The restaurant is located across the river from the city of Chinook whence came the name of the tasty chinook salmon. I asked what kind of salmon the lox was made from. The server said she didn't know, but they buy it from Costco!

Yelp
This is my new favorite coffee spot when visiting Astoria. So few places make a coffee this good and go to the trouble of using porcelain instead of paper cups even when having it there. Makes a difference. The view is outstanding, business is spotless, service is top notch.

V C.

Yelp
Great spot to have breakfast or coffee with the view. They also have teas and sweet treats. Very unique coffee shop in historic location.
google avatar

Ricky R.

Yelp
This was an awesome surprise. First we have never been to this part in Astoria. Its shocking considering the size of the town, but we end up in the main part of town more often than not. Second it was amazing. We had a plethora of food. It was all really good and I think well priced. The views were great. The history of the building was awesome. The service was super friendly. I was happy from beginning to end of our visit. It was a beautiful way to start the day. Super chill. Super nice relaxing morning. Plus there was a little flea market and shops around there as well worth visiting. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Marguerite P.

Yelp
What a cool place. Coffee girl use to be an old cannery and the term "coffee girl" was used for the ladies that served coffee. I loved the feel of this place, the history and the view of the water. Food was delicious and I got a dirty chia which I thought was very good. My husband got a brew coffee and he thought that the taste was great as well. Definitely a must see if you are in the area.
google avatar

Shweta T.

Yelp
What a wonderful little place! We stopped here on a sunny day coming back from Cannon Beach, and so glad we did. I ordered an eggnog cheesecake, some lox bagel, and one of their specialty lattes. The latte was delightful! Ambiance was really special as it's on a little island in the middle of the water, in a historical cannery. A few small cute shops surrounding. The cheesecake was good as well - light texture and good flavor.
google avatar

Kristin G.

Yelp
We enjoyed the atmosphere. Parking was rough (I'd probably recommend parking by the hotels and walking down the pier) and my coffee was good, not exceptional. It was pretty busy but wait times weren't bad at all.
google avatar

Jesse G.

Yelp
The ambience is everything in this place. It's on the end of a wooden pier you drive down to get to and has an absolutely beautiful outside deck. I sat outside even though it was a bit misty and damp and had a great breakfast with the sea lions providing background noise. Inside is also super cute, with friendly and competent baristas. I had an americano which was really nice and a breakfast panini which I didn't love as much. The ham was kind of fatty and there was a lot of butter or mayo (I somehow couldn't tell which?). The bread was great, though and it was huge, and it came with fresh fruit with a lot of variety.
google avatar

D D.

Yelp
Wood floors, gorgeous view of the water, amazing smoked salmon on fresh bagels. Staff is friendly. I'll be back!
google avatar

Frank J.

Yelp
Spent the weekend at the funky Atomic motel so naturally a cuppa joe at the similarly funky Coffee Girl was in order. Nice place, nice people, good coffee. Lovely view of the Columbia from the back pier patio. This shop is located on pier 39 along with the bumble bee museum and a very good restaurant. Very limited parking but you can always park at the motel and make the short walk to the pier. Back in the day not a lot of people even knew that this pier was here. It's become quite the tourist magnet in recent years. The waterfront trolley tracks (which has been mostly absent since the zombie apocalypse) end at the per but I don't know if the trolley actually runs that far down river these days. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Pretty much the last activity if you're heading east back to Portland.
google avatar

George R.

Yelp
I had the Lox Bagel with an amazing coffee Wife had just a nice Americana The staff was friendly and professional The food was well prepared and delicious
google avatar

Kirk F.

Yelp
Why did it take me so long to find Coffee Girl? I love the location on a working pier on the edge of the Columbia. Solid house coffee, don't need to do a fancy coffee drink (unless you want to, of course). I appreciate good house brew. I liked the breakfast panini a lot! And the people there were friendly and nice. Thumbs up (I wish I'd been going here for years).
google avatar

Mel W.

Yelp
Do not miss out! This coffee shop is awesome and is right on the dock, beautiful views while enjoying the morning breeze over the water. Two words: "lox and bagel!" Simply delectable! The Shot in the Dark coffee, cappuccino, macchiato, all the pastries, and especially the mango coconut scones se soooo yummy! Shout out too all the kind, patient, and friendly staff.
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
Super cute place. It was foggy outside so couldn't appreciate the view but looks like a gorgeous spot. Inside is spacious to eat, work and meet with friends. Food and coffee list is generous. Considering I didnt see a lot of parking i was shocked to see soo many people inside. Drink I got was fine - not too sweet (ordered my roaring 20s latte half sweet ) but wish I could taste the coffee. The pacific champ breakfast toast was yummy though. Vinaigrette was on point and love the bread it came on! Would love to come back agaim on a clear day and enjoy the view!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
A quintessential coffee shop to visit while in Astoria. It's slightly north east of downtown and is accessible both by car and a walk along the river path - I recommend the latter if it's a nice day. Food is typical cafe food, like sandwiches and pastries. Drinks are typically coffee shop drinks - with monthly specialty drinks. The service is a bit slow so you'll probably have to wait in line for a bit since it's often busy. They have ample indoor seating but the real draw is the fact that it is located on the pier. So outdoor seating is facing the river where you can watch boats go by.
google avatar

Sartha M.

Yelp
A beautiful view of the bay, friendly staff, and a very tasty matcha latte. Perfect place to study or just relax!

Madi B.

Yelp
I LOVED this coffee shop. Adorable place and great pastries. The coffee was so good, view was beautiful, service was friendly, and surroundings of this place are fun to explore as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Holly A.

Yelp
Short and sweet review. Ordered a vanilla latte which was brewed perfectly. It was not overly sweet. The decor is super cute and they have many logo items for purchase. I even bought a baseball cap. They have the cutest outdoor seating area right on the river. The seals barking was something to experience as well. I really enjoyed every single place we went to in Astoria and can't wait to spend more time there in the future.
google avatar

Jeannie D.

Yelp
Cute spot with outdoor seating on the River. They don't have much for the gluten free pescatarian. The coffee though!! Not too sweet as a lot of mochas are. Really nice ladies, fun mismatched plate settings. Historical spot also. Stopped in on a sunny Sunday morning & there was live music on the patio. I would go again for the delicious coffee, but can't really eat there. (I don't knock stars for MY dietary restrictions)
google avatar

Cathi S.

Yelp
Cranberry orange scone iced oat milk latte were a nice break from sight seeing and exploring. We walked in across the wooden pier instead taking a chance on parking near here. Great place with friendly service.
google avatar

Kathie H.

Yelp
Great Ambiance...good baristas... I've only had the lemon bar to eat...a lot of people seem to enjoy the food which is made there from what I can tell. A favorite place in Astoria.
google avatar

Sherri J.

Yelp
Such a surprise to see this coffee place tucked around the corner of the dock. You could miss it, if you weren't looking for it. Staff was very kind and courteous. Our coffee was awesome, and we had wonderful breakfast. Sat outside on the dock, where they have sweet bistro tables set up.
google avatar

Nawal r.

Yelp
My first time in this cute cafe , I picked 3 bakery items Chocolate nectarines muffin Cream cheese brownies, I was disappointed with the taste...my son had a bagel with lox and was okay.. My daughter had a vegetarian quiche, Ali's was okay.. I liked the cappuccino drink I had
google avatar

Betty E.

Yelp
I love this place, the food appears to be made on the premises and it's delicious. They make a berry bran muffin that I love. The coffee is delicious and they have sugar free carmel so I can have my carmel macchiato. It gets crowded like Sunday mornings but we usually go at unusually go at odd times and we get right in. They also have delicious soups now that winter is on it's way.
google avatar

Ed B.

Yelp
The pastries are right on house is the coffee. Love the location right on the river. Service is always friendly.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Huge fan of the decor, location, and food. You can enjoy good coffee and sandwiches right by the water on the old cannery. The Big Champ was spot on for me. Fresh veggies atop delicious lox and cream cheese on a well-toasted slice of seeded bread. Yum!

Not T.

Yelp
This place has the best fresh air in Astoria. Be careful not to get swept away by the wind and the waves and the melodies of the sea lions. The location is probably why I gave this shop such a great rating. After going through the Hanthorn Cannery Museum, and looking at all the happy faces of the contented workers, I was in a great mood. The coffee was incredible and the pastry was perfect and the smiling faces of the workers made my morning a special one.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
What are you really coming for when you come to Coffee Girl? Sitting outside on the pier and enjoying that insane river view, listening to the sea lions bark over brunch and coffee. Strip away the ambience of the outdoor seating on the pier and this is really just a basic cafe with decent food and over-roasted, forgettable coffee. The service was friendly enough, but absolutely no measures taken to maintain social distancing in a small indoor space, staff not wearing masks, and I didn't see one table get wiped or sanitized the entire hour or so we were there! Service is slow and awkward due to self-inflicted inefficiencies. At this point most businesses are using some sort of electronic contactless point of sale like Square. Not these guys. Using an old-school cash register and swiping cards on a credit card terminal like it's still 2003 is a barrier to expeditious service. The cashier then has to take the time to hand-write drinks and food orders on sticky notes and deliver them to the barista and kitchen, while a long line of customers snakes out the door. Wow. Memo to the owner: time to up your game with a legit POS to make it not so obvious that you're a cheapskate that's nickel-and-diming your service. Which begs the question of what else is being neglected. Once you order, instead of them running the food to tables, you have to stand inside and wait for 20ish minutes for them to call your name as they hand your food to you on plates for you to take to your table. Just weird. I've never seen any cafe with eat-in dining do this, especially during COVID where maskless folks are just lingering around the counter waiting for their food. Have customers take a number to their table and then the food expedited to their table. It was dumbfounding. On to the food...the $12 lox bagel I ordered was delicious. The best part was the marinated cucumbers on the side that were absolutely scrumptious. My wife's $12 breakfast panini was decent. Ingredients were fresh except for the pre-cooked egg patty on my wife's panini. None of the pastries in the case looked particularly appetizing so we passed. If you like really dark roasted coffee, you might find it palatable here. It's a worthwhile breakfast stop, especially in the warmer months when you can enjoy the view off the pier outdoors, so long as you know what you're really paying for.
