The Best Pupusas In Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"It feels good just to be inside Cojutepeque, a blue roadside diner in Westlake where you can watch traffic zoom by, drink coffee, and tune into a poorly dubbed Turkish soap drama. But that feeling only multiplies when you eat minty, citrusy salpicón, pastelitos stuffed with chicken stew, and their spongy pupusas with milky, stretchy cheese. We usually go for the loroco and cheese combo, which has a good amount of crunch and mild vegetal sweetness. If you're looking for something punchier, the revuelta is about as subtle as a Boy Scout troop leader with a blow horn—in a great way." - Sylvio Martins, Brant Cox, Nikko Duren

Wow q bueno!!! There are so many saldavorean restaurants in the area, I had to take my time to scope out which new one to try. I don't even want to write the review because then it will get busier! Everything was perfect. The food, juice, music, vibe, friendliness. I was doing a happy dance in my seat the whole time. This spot is definitely saved in my phone for future visits to this side of town.

Google
Great & prompt service. Food was great. Coffee ☕ excellent all you can drink. Hillary our host was exceptional, polite and to the point !!! Very pleased 😀 to have dine in the patio area !!!.

Google
Food was great, but service is terrible and sooooooo slow. The place is tiny. They only had one other table when we arrive and quite a few people working, but it took forever to have our order taken and for the drinks and food to come out. It seems like they have a lot of to-go orders though, and maybe those take priority? I’m not sure what the situation is.

Google
Good food, good service.

Google
I’ve only had the papusas de chicharron y jalapeño con queso. But it’s affordable and very tasty. If you’re ordering takeout, make sure to order 30 minutes in advance.

Gisele Smith

Google
It is a comfortable, "homey" type of establishment. The food was very good and the service was excellent. It was my first time eating Salvadoran food, but it will not be my last. The main item on the menu is pupusas.

Nyle Darling

Google
Super cute place with large covered outside patio that’s dog friendly, they also have parking. I had the Bonanza and it was delicious. Highly recommend.

Google
This is the place to get authentic Salvadoran food in Los Angeles. The Salvadoran dish that most people are aware of are pupusas, a thick tortilla that is usually stuffed with cheese, beans, meat, or loroco, a vine with edible flowers. It was very good. The traditional foods consist of a mix of Native American cuisine from the indigenous groups Lenca, Pipil, Xinca, Poqomam, Maya Chʼortiʼ, Alaguilac, Mixe, Mangue, and Cacaopera; with later influences from Spanish cuisine after the Conquest of El Salvador.

Yelp
Was craving pupusas and decided to try this restaurant. Staff was friendly and promptly took our order. The pupusas were delicious. Would come back!

Jaritzi S.

Yelp
My partner and I came here for the first time we absolutely loved it. We lived here our entire lives and we would always pass by this restaurant. 10/10, service was perfect. For the food we got 2 pupusas revueltas, another one with cheese and shrimp and the last one with queso y frijoles. Lastly for our dessert we got plátanos Fritos, they were perfectly cooked and soft.

Yelp
Service was amazing. The lady was very sweet and she was the only one trying to serve 4 to 5 tables at a time, and she always had a smile. The Pupusas were deliciously However, the breakfast, the rice and beans was stale hard, and it wasn't fresh. The eggs were a lot of things going on. It did not look appetizing, and everything else was good. I will definitely return just for the Pupusas

Yelp
Everything I've eaten here was great! But they get busy sometimes so your Togo order might take longer than expected or even service inside the restaurant.

Cessia F.

Yelp
We went to have Breakfast to these place and the service is super slow. We asked for an order of tortillas and they never brought them to us. They were super slow. Not enough workers on a Thursday morning. The place was clean and nice but the services very slow.

Yelp
Updated review: I've ordered a few times through a delivery app and I've enjoyed the food. Pupusas are delicious. Horchata drink was also very delicious. My first phone order did not go through due to the fact that I was asked to prepay since it was the first time. I'll probably stick to ordering through a delivery app. Thank you

Yelp
The service here is friendly, the pupusas are delicious and the cheese ratio is good my favorite are the cheese and green squash, my little one loves the beans and cheese, place does get busy so come by early to get parking and a table inside...

Yelp

Sam C.

Yelp
Excellent pupusas!!! Really great beef soup too. I was very impressed with this spot and I will come back when I am back in LA.

Yelp

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, I wanted to find that fulfilling Salvadoran flavor we all know and love. For the location where this place is this restaurant should be rocking. The cashier had the poorest and slowest attitude ever it took her 5 mini for her to acknowledge me. I was carrying out my order so I had called it in 30 minutes prior. The Pupusas I got them revueltas and they put beans like crazzy. Honestly for the 40 dollars I wasted I would much rather go eat on the streets for cheaper better and faster service. I apologize for this review but by all means stay the hell away from this place.

Arturo M.

Yelp
The ladies working the front of house are nice. They were friendly. With that being said, the food, the operations of the staff and service itself was subpar to say the least. The food was oily, and bland. It was nice to look at, but it was nothing more than aesthetic. I was disappointed. When we sat down, about 7 minutes later, someone asked if someone had asked us for our drinks. We said no, and proceeded to order them. Then, 10 minutes later, a different lady came up to us and asked us if we were ready to order. At this point, we still didn't have our menus. She came back with them and said she would be back to take our order. Well, someone else came about 5 minutes after and asked if someone had taken our order. We told her no, but that we were ready to order. My husbands pupusa came back first. Our breakfast dishes did not come for another 7 or so minutes. Once the food was served, not one person ever came back to check up on us. I was really looking forward to it, but, I was disappointed and won't be coming back. To the establishment, please have more operational control of the restaurant and season your food. Also, reduce the amount of oil you use.

Yelp
Cojutepeque Restaurant is one of the few Authentic Restaurants there is in Los Angeles. Serving you cultural plates from El Salvador. I recommend you trying this little Gem near DTLA.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
The pollo guisado and pupusas were delicious. The lady who helped me was super nice with a beautiful smile. Great parking and clean area.
google avatar

Yelp
The best PUPUSAS hand down. I recommend this place for anyone looking for a good authentic Pupusa. I haven't tried any other dishes and they can also customize your Pupusa. I usually ask for laurel with cheese and you can pay $0.50 for extra lorroco or cheese. I ask for chicharrón with cheese. I asked one that had Laurel, cheese, chicharrón, beans, and chorizo it was wonderful.

Sharline H.

Yelp
The pupusas are delicious! Lots of flavor and a good size. It's not like other places which are big but only masa. I only order for pick up!

Eddie A.

Yelp
I ordered the pupusas revueltas de chicharron con queso and frijoles. Perfectly balanced, meaning that they were not greasy/oily at all but not dry either. I can't wait to go back and try other food from this place. Reasonable prices.

Erika C.

Yelp
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
UNREAL pupusas. You think you've had a good pupusas before? I'm sure you haven't until you've gone to Cojutepeque. I could eat the bean and cheese pupusa every day for the rest of my life. This place has a cozy, neighbor feel, and the food is simply unbeatable.
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
I neglected to mention in my last review that their pupusas and tamales de pollo are very good. I've had pupusas in LA, El Salvador, and my mom sells pupusas and these are in my top 10 in terms of favorites. I say all of these things as context that I have had a lot of pupusas in my years. I see quite a few reviews saying the staff are rude and unprofessional and that is not my experience at all. I have been there alone and spoken spanish and they have been nice to me. I have also been there with coworkers who don't speak spanish and only spoken in english and they are always nice to me. I also see them being nice to all the other patrons of which most sound like they are Salvadorians or latinos.

Marvin L.

Yelp
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place only has 3.5 stars but this is my favorite pupusa restaurant! It's a family owned business so the wait is a bit long but totally worth it! I usually get the pupusa de revueltas con chicharron and tamal de pollo. Their chicken tamale is soft and packed full of flavor while the pupusa has a great amount of filling.
google avatar

Martha V.

Yelp
My regret is not leaving. Waited 15 minutes just to order. Waited 50 minutes for our food with no drinks and when the food finally came, the buns were soggy and the pupusas were mostly masa. At some point I got up to ask about our food and the lady did not even know what to say. Additionally, I saw people that came in after my family and I get their items before we did. I'm aware Covid has affected small businesses but why cater to more people than you are able to efficiently manage.

Yelp
Going back from therapy we ran into this little really good restaurant. Great selection of comfort food the service outstanding, the food is really tasty all in all we have gone back twice again and planning to try everything on the menu.

Brian A.

Yelp
35 years and counting...bien chevere mi querido Cojutepeque restaurant. Biva los Belmont Sentinels.
google avatar

Haby B.

Yelp
I love this spot. It's my go to. It's always consistent and it's authentic El Salvadoran food. I always take it to go so I can't attest to the dine-in experience.

Vincent C.

Yelp
google avatar

José-Manuel G.

Yelp
Honestly the best pupusas in LA! There's tons of places to eat pupusas but this place in the corner is a gem of Los Angeles, they have the best pupusas in LA. Great service and good quality food. Excellent prices too. Don't miss out, try it. I highly recommend it. Ever since I found out about this place I always go , even for my bday. This restaurant has a lot of potential.
google avatar

Yelp
Came across the cojutepeque and ordered a coctel de camarones and i specifically asked less amount of vegies and more shrimps with that said this is the result : 7 shrimps in cup and 7/8 of veggies on cup Hello cojutepeque im paying for it not asking for free !!!

Yelp
I ordered Tamales did not come out Hot Also ordered Pupusa to go working staff was Unfriendly

Edwin A.

Yelp
First, we sat down and no one came to serve us. My girlfriend had to go and grab the menus and place our order with a cashier. Second, we had to wait almost 45 minutes to get our food. When the pupusas arrived they were not fully cooked. They fell apart and tasted bad. We also ordered plátanos and they were also not cooked, what a disappointment. And to top it off they still had the nerve to charge us because we got up and didn't eat any of the food.

Yelp
This little salvadorian spot is bomb!!!! The food was delicious!! The seven is great even through our pandemic period. The lady at cashier was so polite and cheerful! Gave us great customer services I ordered the chicken tamal it was awesome just like i wanted with veggies potato and shredded chicken wrapped with banana leaves. The empanadas de leche were so good and we tried this new dessert called chilate con nuegados so good! Will definitely be back again

Leonor C.

Yelp
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
I finally came back to this place after years of moving away from the neighborhood and I still think they are the best pupusas I've had!!! The lady attending customers was super nice over the phone when I ordered and in person when I arrived. Other customers around me just didn't listen about social distancing even after the employee kept telling them that only one person inside at a time to order , an elderly customer specifically wasn't listening , he didn't even have a mask on he was holding it in his hand and being rude to the employee. I know this is probably out of the restaurant's control just thought I'd mention it because it made me a little uncomfortable and the employees should be treated with respect and the ladies were so nice. Anyway, I'll be back soon for more pupusas!!!
google avatar

Gloria O.

Yelp
Mediocre food, terrible service, overly priced. Sums up this restaurant. Not to mention that the restaurant itself is very outdated.
google avatar

Alexis S.

Yelp
Cojutepeque is a wonderfully delicious authentic Salvadoran restaurant. Their Pupusas are the bomb!!! Everything here is so good with very generous portions. I had the San Vicente Kabobs and the meat was great quality, tender and wonderfully seasoned. Their coleslaw, refried rice and beans and salsa were all so good. I can't wait to go. back and try more dishes. They have a super cute outdoor dining patio with plenty of room to social distance. Everyone wore masks except when they were eating they wore smiles of delight!

Tony S.

Yelp
This used to be the spot mannn suck to see another good restaurant go... pupusas are not being cooked right cheese is either not cooked all the way or not enough at times as the neighborhood try's to change so have they this is not authentic Salvadorian food... Salvadorian restaurants don't make horchata with canela mannn it got worst and worst
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
Very disappointed to see they are doing construction or remodeling right next to the kitchen, construction worker not wearing a mask, walking in and out the kitchen talking to the cook who isn't wearing a mask either and they are holding useless conversations Right over the food they are preparing for others. If one of them have covid and are asymptomatic they are spreading it! Very irresponsible. Last time I ever eat at this place and you shouldn't either. We are in a pandemic should be taking more responsibility!!!!

Sarai R.

Yelp
The food was amazing but the service really need to improve. We waited 50 minutes for the food and drinks. Please tell me why. Somebody came in after us and got all their food and drinks before us. There needs to be somebody watching over these waitresses. Maybe more training or somebody Ontop of them to act right.
google avatar

Miko Alicia M.

Yelp
I've been coming here ever since I was small & I truly love how welcoming the employees are. Their menu is very delicious and I appreciate the employees recommendations the last time I went in. I picked up food from them over the phone & it took about 20 minutes and the food was amazing. I usually come there for their pupusas, but I tried their platanos fritos the last time I went & they look were some of the best I've had in a long time. With Covid they have done very well with providing outdoor dining in their cute patio and even provide their food thru different app services. I appreciate Cojutepeque very much & will continue to be a customer here. Thank you!
google avatar

Beatriz R.

Yelp
Love this spot always go when I'm craving a good salvi breakfast and pupusas. Never had a problem with the staff.

Lan L.

Yelp
This is not a great restaurant to order using grubhub or any other delivery app. Waited for my food for an hours - received messages from them that my food was on its way - 20 minutes later got message my order was cancelled! this restaurant really sucks!
google avatar

Alma J.

Yelp
google avatar

Lena B.

Yelp
Whoever is making the pupusas these days needs to go back and retake Pupusa Making 101....

Julie P.

Yelp
Authentic hometown pupusas from the motherland! Service was excellent and food was delicious.
