Ice Cream Shops Open During the Pandemic in Minneapolis and St. Paul - Eater Twin Cities

"This fantastic little neighborhood shop on Hamline near the intersection of Randolph in St. Paul has moved online pints of cookie dough, Door County cherry, old school vanilla, and something appropriately called “Exhausted Parent Pint,” online. Throw in some locally roasted Bootstrap coffee, too." - Joy Summers

Google
Wow, such a delicious and fun place! We came for a fun little date, seeking ice cream and coffee, a cute atmosphere, and quality time. The coffee drink I had, the Flannel, was probably up there as one of my favorite coffee drinks of all time. Each sip was just perfection. We also split a banana split, a classic treat done right here, with the option to choose your own ice cream flavors for each scoop (we went with espresso and vanilla). I hope we can stop by again soon this summer! 🩷🩵

Google
Great service. My wife and I came here for our first time for some good ice-cream. But we got something else. Even better ice cream. We love the blueberry cheesecake! The sugar waffle cones are amazing. We brought our 2 year old over. They had the cutest step stool for them. Would highly recommend this place to anyone of all ages.

Google
My favorite right now is the Ice Cream Flight. Four little scoops and each one has a cute little cone. So fun and delicious!

Google
We stopped at Cold Front for a caffeine pick me-up before heading to a music festival. The espresso abbogato was so good!! It was absolutely perfect on a hot day. I only wish we had a place like this close to home.

Lori McCloud

Google
Under-rated coffee! They made me a hot mocha even though it wasn't on their menu. It was perfect! Not overly thick and sugary. Just what I was craving on a cool rainy evening. Very nice employees. I hadn't been there before, but I will return.

Google
Even during winter Cold Front is a must stop! We got the warm brownie sundae and it was fantastic. The vanilla ice cream was really good along with the nice chewy brownie in the bottom. Topped with Carmel sauce, waffle cone pieces and whipped cream, it was just the finishing touch to make it an amazing treat.

Google
It's our favourite and go-to ice cream spot all summer long! Kid and adult friendly! Would definitely recommend the sorbets and affogado specifically, but everything I have had has been great.

Google
ColdFront is my go-to ice cream place. Delicious cold and hot beverages too!! Kyle, Asia, and Liam are my favorite team members as they provide excellent customer service. Highly recommend ColdFront. :-)

Yelp
Yum! As an ice cream addict, I so appreciate having good spots like this around! Although it appears to be pre-bought ice cream based on my recognization of a couple common flavors that my restaurant orders as well, they offer a good variety of good quality ice creams. A slight bit more expensive than I like to pay for a scoop, but hey, I'm from a small town originally. Service and menu is where they really shine! I stopped in this week and had great, friendly and fast service from the person behind the counter. The menu is so huge with hot drinks, cold drinks, ice cream creations, and more! You can order just about anything you'd like or build your own creation. The inside is decorated cute as well and features a great window view at the front so you can watch the world go by while you enjoy your scoop. We will be back!

Yelp
Great location, open year-round, multi-functional serving coffee and ice cream, lovely service, unique - the list goes on. Sure, Saint Paul has an array of ice cream shops, but this one is special in the additional coffee component. My personal favorite is the bootstrap shake which comes with a shot of espresso blended in with a whip cream and cherry. There's a super cute bar to enjoy your dish, cone, shake, malt, sundae, coffee, etc. as well as a few smaller tables. Come try!

Yelp
Dessert: Cake Batter Ice Cream After dinner I popped into @coldfrontmsp for a refreshing dessert. This little shop is nestled in the St. Paul area between a few good business. Small in size but seems to pack an explosive bite. I opted for the for the cake batter and to my surprise it wasn't super sweet. It was just enough to balance for ice cream. My only suggestion would be to not add so much cake batter pieces. Overall 9/10 and the young men working the shop are super nice. #TheTravoodieLife #agirlandfood #foodie #foodielife #goodeats #travelfood #foodblogger #prayeattravel #worldfoodie #blackfoods #travoodie #blackfoodie #travelingfoodie #blackgirlswhoblog #travoodieeats ** Like, Share, & Follow Me @thetravoodie on IG, FB & TikTok DM or Email for Collab

Yelp
Great little ice cream shop with both traditional and more creative flavors. High quality with creamy texture and rich flavors. And since I can never decide, I love the flight that is also served on the most adorable mini ice cream cones.
google avatar

Yelp
Best ice cream store in the entire St. Paul area. While there's a competing ice cream store less than a mile away, that one serves grocery store ice cream and obscene amounts. The ice cream that you get a Cold Front is from the University of Wisconsin Madison's dairy barn and amazing. They have incredible flavors and generous servings for a single cone. Definitely worth supporting this local small business. While I've never joined Cold Front's $40 a month coffee club, they seem to make amazing fancy espresso drinks too. You're missing out if you stop by the Nook and don't come here for dessert.

Yelp
Found this spot while walking back to the car after breakfast. Felt a little sheepish after asking how long the store had been there (thinking it was fairly new) and the very nice man helping says "8 years or so". Well dang. The menu was very inviting. Another place where the menu might seem a little short, but of you want it, they can make it. I got a London Fog, hubs had his standard hazelnut latte. Both were great. Grabbed a (giant) banana chocolate chip muffin to go and can't wait to enjoy it. Definitely will come back for some ice cream! That Chai affogato sounds delicious!

Yelp
So with the location and reviews Cold Front seemed promising, but it failed to live up to the hype. First, the ice cream is NOT made in house. It was okay ice cream, but it's not really worth my time if you don't make it yourself. Second, the place feels stale and lacks the personality of an ice cream shop. The presentation was very plain, selection was limited, and ultimately I just didn't feel like it was a place where you could hang out. Lastly, I also got an espresso, and I received it in a disposable cup to drink in house. When you don't compost inside city boundaries, I detested throwing the cup in the trash. Part of the reason I order an espresso is to drink it out of the small cup because the cup actually makes a difference. Overall, there were several misses here and I would not come back.

Yelp
Their ice cream is excellent with some standards and a few rotating flavors which have all been great. They even have good lactose free options, some of which are ice cream, not sorbet or Italian ice, though those are usually good too. I'm curious to try their coffee and soda stuff but haven't yet!

Yelp
We had a horrible meal next door and wanted to get the taste out of our mouths. Cold Front was perfect. Excellent ice cream and service. We tried several flavors: Superman, Chocolate, Oreo and Turtle. They were all excellent and we couldn't pick a favorite. Try 2 flavors in a bowl - you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Andy S.

Yelp
This place is a great old-school ice cream & coffee shop. I'm lactose intolerant, so the fact that they have multiple flavors outside of just fruit sorbet is a huge plus. They also have Superman, which checks the box for my son. The coffee is also excellent. Fun shops next door if you want to play pinball or go bowling.

Yelp
Can't say anything bad about this place, right next to a very awesome restaurant called Nook, decent prices, delicious flavors, local small business, very clean, friendly staff...I will go back again.

Cole T.

Yelp
Friendly staff, fun neighborhood location, but the prices are on the high, high end. Nearly $8 for 3 small scoops of ice cream puts Cold Front out of consideration for next time.
google avatar

Yelp
What a small, busy little shop. They have a decent variety of flavors, some routine and some unique (even funny). Staff was working hard to get things out, it was busy but we didn't wait long. Nice artwork for sale inside. Not a ton of space to sit, but if it's nice you can always stroll while you eat. Parking is available off the side street around the back side of the building. We parked there for free, it was an evening, but I'm not 100% sure on restrictions there so watch the signs. We walked through the alley to the front. Yum!
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
Okay, Cold Front-you has me at a good Bootstrap coffee affogato. THEN you totally change my world by offering a locally made Grey Duck Chai Affogato! The Chai Affogato was everything I had hoped it would be...lots of good spices mixing nicely with the old-fashioned vanilla ice cream in my cup. Thanks for the tasting of the not-your-usual ice cream choices!

Yelp
First time here. Saw an ad on Instagram for the summer ice cream tour through ExploreMN for their MN Scoop punch card. It was a perfect opportunity and night for ice cream per the requests of my daughters. Looked up the info on Explore MN website and found a few in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area ice cream shops that are participating. Didn't see any Minneapolis location near us so we ventured across the river to Cold Front in St. Paul. This was an easy drive from our house. Took 14 minutes so not too bad. They have on street parking. St. Paul's Mayor has recently lifted the mask mandate and it was awesome to see people still wearing masks inside even though there was no sign about masks being required. I didn't realized the shop was so close to The Nook! I've always wanted to try it out so will have to go to the Nook next time we are in the area. I also didn't realized that it's across from Cretin-Durham Hall high school. Prices are reasonable with the portions given. The ice cream texture is like a cross between MN Nice and Izzy's put together. It's creamy and smooth. I love the real peach chunks in my ice cream. The superman flavor is so different. I can't quite put my tongue on it to describe the taste. Overall, staff was friendly and big enough space for social distancing and I got my first punch out of six for the MN Scoop challenge. As we were leaving, I noticed their menu had a cone flight! There are four flavors in the flight for $5.25 serve in a cone and I wonder if it could be serve in a cup instead for those doing Keto or can't have too much carbs. They have a couple benches outside that you could sit to eat your cold treat and enjoy the beautiful weather or stay cool inside with AC. They have about a dozen tables inside for dining in.

Yelp
Stopped here by chance tonight, sampled some delicious flavors then ordered some fantastic salted caramel ice cream with fudge swirls and cashews. The flavor I had was called "This sh*t just got serious." Creamy, flavorful, plenty of mixed in fudge/cashews for texture. Fantastic! Great service!! We will be back for sure!

Yelp
I'm so shocked that I haven't yelped about this place before as this is my second time going. The first time was when this place was on my summer bucket list in 2018. It's been two years and I got today what I got then. Delicious ice cream and wonderful service! I love everything about cold front. From the old ice cream parlor feel, to the fun flavor names. High quality ice cream and staff that make my children feel welcomed and like they can order anything. I've noticed talking through masks can be hard... especially for kids. Once again the staff was so patient. The bathrooms were clean, they had ample seating outside and we found street parking super quickly. I'll def be back!!

Yelp
A dear friend of mine had 2 pints of ice cream delivered to my door after a death in my family. Cold Front offers local delivery service! I received Strawberry and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. The strawberry ice cream is probably the best I've ever had. It's soft and has real strawberry chunks and the flavor is that of actual strawberries, not artificial fruit which I can't stand. It's a smooth and rich ice cream, I would definitely get this again. The chocolate chip cookie dough wasn't my favorite but I typically don't seek out this flavor anyway. I liked the chunks of cookie dough but the ice cream around it wasn't as rich and creamy as I'd have liked. I've lived close by for over 2 years now and never knew this place existed (not big on sweets!) but now that I do I will certainly go back and try their other flavors.

Joe N.

Yelp
Their Zanzibar Chocolate is among the best I've had anywhere in the country. Strawberry also quite good. Grandkids love this place too.

Yelp
I've never been much of an ice cream person, but when I realized that it was national ice cream day, I decided to make the drive from St. Louis Park. It was a very good choice, and I think I am now an ice cream person. I tried two flavors and couldn't decide, so I got a scoop of each (butter pecan and this amazing peanut butter ice cream with chocolate-covered pretzels that I am pretty sure came straight from heaven). It's a really cute shop reminiscent of a classic soda fountain, and the location, though a bit of a drive for me, offers ample street parking, nearby shady trees, and outdoor socially distanced seating. They offer a mix of classic and whimsical flavors, so it's good for kids, adults, and everyone in between! The people behind the counter are knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys ice cream or coffee.
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Yum. I almost walked past this gem! It's a cute lil shop with some generic flavors and some custom flavors. We walked in and got there just in time! We were a party of 7, by the time we were done ordering about 15 people came in! The guy behind the counter was so patient and helpful. He was only helping this location and did an amazing job! He was helpful, patient and kept his cool despite the crowd. The prices are super reasonable and the variety of flavors is perfect for a group!
google avatar

Jackie L.

Yelp
We stumbled across this place in St. Paul and aren't we glad we did! We always love finding locally owned places that offer a bit more than the traditional ice cream shop. We tried a little bit of everything - sundae, malt, shake, affogato, and a plain ice cream scoop in a waffle cone! Everyone enjoyed theirs and there was not one bit left! The location and bathrooms were clean and they were very quick to help us even being a bit busier. We will definitely be back to try more of their not-so-typical ice cream choices and to continue to support our local businesses :)
google avatar

Hnou V.

Yelp
My friends and I came on a Friday night. Luckily we beat the crowd by 5 minutes. This place is small and there's not a lot of room for groups larger than 4. Lots of people order their ice cream to go though so it's not a huge issue. I loved their idea of the ice cream flight. I got to try four different flavors without feeling too guilty. Also, their prices are super reasonable. I can't wait to visit again.
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
This unsuspecting ice cream shop is a Saint Paul gem! Each time I get ice cream from Cold Front I fall in love with this place a little more. Not only do they have a rotating, wide variety of ice creams, they also have coffee, soda, and ice cream drinks (root beer floats, etc.). The service has always been prompt and polite. Definitely one of my favorites in Saint Paul! Since I usually walk here, parking isn't an issue but there always seems to be plenty of street parking.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
This place is cute! Has espresso, speciality drinks and yummy ice cream. The seating is comfortable and the staff of friendly. Would definitely come again
google avatar

Kris W.

Yelp
Unassuming storefront - walk in and you can see what the buzz is about! Brilliant name for an ice cream shoppe that doubles as a fantastic full-service coffee shop, too. Was in the area, always looking for new locally owned joints to patronize and found ourselves here. Grabbed an iced miel and had a great chat with owner, Kyle. The shop uses locally roasted coffee from Bootstrap roasters - based in St. Paul. Parking is all street but wasn't too difficult to grab a spot right out front, making it even more convenient. We will be making the jaunt across the river to visit this place many more times!
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, very friendly and they serve Chocolate Shoppe ice cream! Highly recommend for adults and kids.
google avatar

Xia Y.

Yelp
Love the variety of flavors that they serve. My favorite part is the ice cream flight. BEST IDEA EVER! Very small space but cute concept and colors. Great for kids or a sweet date.
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
This place makes the whole neighborhood fun. The kids love going there with friends. It's a good pit stop if you are out walking the dog. I guess I'm the only one who orders an egg creme that's younger than 70. Who would have known.

Shannon M.

Yelp
Love Love LOVE! Staff are nice and courtesy. Went here 3 days in a row and I live an hour away. They also have pints to bring home.
google avatar

Kamrin D.

Yelp
The best part of cold front is getting the mini ice cream flight. It is perfect for sampling all the different flavors. Cold Front is a fairly small shop with limited seating indoor and out. They don't have the biggest selection of flavors, but what they do offer are some very creative flavors and creations. Prices are great for the amount of ice cream you get and the quality. I tried a couple different flavors and enjoyed them all. My only complaint was the ice cream melted very quickly and got really messy. I would definitely go again and can't wait to try other flavors.
google avatar

Jamielyn V.

Yelp
Found a locally owned ice cream shop and just had to try them after our meal at "the nook". Gentleman there was very kind and helpful as our indecisive selfs could not decide. Lovely shop, great ambiance and awesome staff. Ice cream was homemade and delicious!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I really like the variety of flavors and the reasonably priced items at this ice cream shop! I got the snowball flight (which is basically 4 smaller scoops of ice cream in flavors of your choice). You're also able to taste any flavor before buying. There's no parking lot but street parking is available nearby.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
After I saw friend review Cold afront on Yelp I immediately added it to one of my bookmarks. The idea of an ice cream flight seemed magical to me. Sometimes I feel extremely indecisive and having four different types of ice cream would definitely help. A group of four of us stopped in on a Sunday night about 15 minutes before closing. Most of the ice cream flavors were still available but there are a couple that were out. Staff was extremely friendly and willing to give samples. I probably talked about going to this place 12 times before we arrived and I have to met I was a little let down. I feel like the ice cream flavors were all things I could find inside the local grocery store. Nothing stood out to me and nothing wow'd me. Instead of getting a flight up ice cream we all decided to get individual cups of ice cream. One issue we experienced was the ice cream containing coconut. Although staff was super helpful by pulling out a nutritional guide and looking up the ice cream I was surprised that everything was marked with coconut. This is definitely something they should be notifying guess of. Especially considering the ice cream was dairy, the use of coconut seemed unnecessary. We had a hard time coming to a decision on how to raise our visit. While the ice cream was good, it was nothing that we would drive across town for. There are several different ice cream shops that offer a larger variety. However; we would all stop back in to the shop if we were in the area. None of us would ever turn down the opportunity to go. My suggestion is, if you were looking for an average ice cream you'll find it here. If you are looking for something more unique you'll want to look elsewhere.
google avatar

Kate H.

Yelp
We were looking for ice cream Memorial Day & found Cold Front. Great ice cream, fun flavors, super nice staff -- highly recommend!!
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
Cold Front was just your regular ice cream spot. With your basics but a few fun flavors nothing too crazy though. I just got 1 scoop with the mint chocolate ice cream. They give you a lot for 1 scoop I could not finish it all. However, the flavor was nothing special. Pretty average at best. But, if you are in the area I think it's a nice ice cream spot if you don't want to just go to dairy queen. The prices were similar to other specialty ice cream shops not too cheap but not crazy expensive.
google avatar

Emily Z.

Yelp
Cold Front is a cute spot for a sweet treat. They have all the flavors oh would want from an ice cream place and a few more unique ones. I loved how you could get a "flight" of mini ice cream cones (4 flavors in 4 mini cones). Perfect for an indecisive kid (or grownup). I got the lemon cream and the peanut butter ice cream. Both were good but not my favorite ice cream ever. The lemon was definitely unexpected though (in a good way). They have minimal seating on the inside and a couple tables outside.
google avatar

Seth F.

Yelp
Simply the best. Better than all the rest. And the owner is a SUPERSTAR, donating all that delicious Wi Ice Cream Shoppe product profit MN Recovery Connection. We are so #blessed to have Cold Front in our neighborhood. Hoping summer doesn't pass them or us by
google avatar

Jodi G.

Yelp
Just love this place. Inventive ice cream flavors, always tasty and satisfying. A bright spot for takeout during COVID lockdown, and we're still fans! Hope they're around forever!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
The place is pretty tiny, so I would avoid it during busy hours. The ice cream was good but nothing original. There was only a small selection of flavors to choose from. The whipped cream on my boyfriend's sundae was super runny when he got it, which was kind of gross. The girl working wasn't very friendly, even though there were no other customers in the place. Overall, it was a very mediocre ice cream place, and I probably won't be back.
google avatar

Kelsey R.

Yelp
We enjoyed stopping by for ice cream and coffee. Although there isn't tons of seating it is still a cozy historic interior and I look forward to going back.
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
It's a very small ice cream joint. The people and service is great here. However in terms of the ice cream, it's alright. Not bad, but not anything special. It's cool that you can do a flight of ice cream. It's more pricey, but you can try different flavors. I can't quite remember the flavors we tried, but I remember it as not being that special and it was just A-OK. Seemed like flavors you can get at the super market. Probably wouldn't come back, but it was a A-OK experience.
google avatar

Carissa E.

Yelp
Awesome spot to bring the kids! Or even indecisive adults because you can order the "ice cream flights" 4 small cones with different flavors to satisfy your different cravings. They also serve coffee now! It's super cute inside.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
They had me at "Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream." And that's all I needed to tell my family to convince them to roll out of Casper's and Runyon's Nook and continue to stuff ourselves with the best foods the Upper Midwest has to offer. While Chocolate Shoppe in Madison has dozens of flavors, including more caffeinated flavors, non-dairy, and other specialty ice creams, Cold Front has some of the best of the best. I was in heaven scarfing down my Fat Elvis, while my family members enjoyed Zanzibar Chocolate and This $&@! Just Got Serious (a name which I hate, as if my opinion on that issue matters). The shop is super cute, and while we were happy just having scoops of ice cream, if I lived closed by I'd make good use of their sodas and coffee bar. So why just 4-stars? Customer service left much to be desired. Sure, we were a bunch of weirdos coming in and ooh-ing and aah-ing over buckets of ice cream, but humor us here! One staff member dutifully, though with not much expression, doled out our ice cream while another person continued cleaning and stocking, which is fine--it's just they didn't seem to care that we were sooo happy to get our ice cream here. Hopefully it was an off-day, and even if it wasn't, if we lived closed by we'd be regulars. If you serve Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream you could basically do anything short of poking my kids in the eyes and still get my approval.
google avatar

V M.

Yelp
Went in for the flight but they were out of cones, so inside they placed the scoops onto a plate. It was a disappointing experience.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
Love the mini cones! Delicious flavors, very reasonably priced. Great cute neighborhood shop!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
I recently moved to the neighborhood and have become a huge fan of Cold Front! The ice cream selection is limited compared to other places, but the flavors are super high quality and delicious. Their brewed coffee is flavorful without being too strong. The hot chocolates are amazing. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The owner is often around and you can tell this is very much a labor of love for him - he is often inventing new drinks and sundaes. I am so glad to have Cold Front in my neighborhood!
google avatar

Casey Jo J.

Yelp
Great Ice cream, better service. I would come back here just for the customer service & conversation alone. The guy who helped me & my dad tonight was so nice & genuine & took the time to talk to us with a great attitude and made our day better.
google avatar

Hannah P.

Yelp
The staff is friendly and the ice cream is great quality. They have both unique and classic flavors. I had the banana split with 3 scoops of chocolate, butterscotch and cappuccino, which was absolutely amazing.
