The 7 Best New Bakeries in and Around Boston | Eater Boston

"French bakery Colette already has quite a following in Melrose and Medford, where its original bakery stands, but the team recently expanded into Boston proper with a third location inside the former home of the South End’s beloved Cafe Madeline. Stop in for croissants, cookies, and picturesque pastries like the glossy fruit tarts or the individual-sized Paris Brest filled with swirls of hazelnut praline cream." - Nathan Tavares

Went to the Medford (original?) location first since people said there was better. Happy to report that while the selection is smaller here, the quality is just as good. More convenient location so happy to have confirmed this. Stand outs are the chocolate croissant (pain Au chocolat, what they call the cho-Colette, NOT the pain Au Swiss which I didn’t like when I tried it from Medford), and the chocolate eclair. For the croissant, pop it in an air fryer for like 30s at 400F to reheat. Seems unnecessary, but trust me on this one. The result is incredible. I forgot to take pictures, but watch it so it doesn’t burn. lol. The chocolate eclair has really tasty filling, maybe has a dash of espresso powder or something and maybe hazelnut? It wasn’t overly sugary or heavy creamy. Ate it too quickly and the picture of the half eaten one was too ugly to post. The other things I wouldn’t go out of my way for. Notes below: Strawberry fraisier: meh. Cake layer is too sweet. Mousse layer is a bit heavy, and overall balance is a bit off. Friend said it reminded her of ice cream. It’s really small, so beware if it’s for sharing. Took a picture of it next to a box of Kleenex for scale. Macarons: varied in size? Texture was good, taste was okay ish. Chocolate was the best of the three. Lemon- quite lemony. Chocolate- a bit light and nutty. Matcha- light matcha taste, sweeter than the others. Also included a pic of the inside, some shells were slightly hollow.

Google
Has the potential to be one of the best bakeries in Boston, but fell short today. I’m still looking for the best almond croissant in Boston. Colette’s was next on my list. A very French name, so I had high hopes. The almond croissant was beautiful, and perfectly caramelised on the bottom giving it a great crunch and flavour. This is quite rare to find, so props to them. However the almond frangipane inside the croissant was a big let down. It was so bland. I was expecting a rich decadent paste, and theirs really missed the mark. On a side note, maybe people here seemed to enjoy the « Fraisier » cake so I think it’s probably a safer bet to try that instead. Might give them another chance soon, but will try another pastry instead.

Cute place for delicious French treats! The chocolate croissant was so picturesque and tasted just as good. All the flaky layers were perfect, so light and airy! Definitely one of the best croissants you can find in the Boston area, make sure to stop by!

A visit to Boston feels incomplete without stopping at Collette Bakery on Columbus Avenue. Every time we come, it is an experience to remember. Starting the day here with their fresh croissants and apple turnover is simply delightful, everything is baked to perfection and full of flavor. The quality and taste make us wish we had something similar back home in Dubai. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one of the best ways to begin the morning in Boston. Highly recommended!

Tasty French pastries and croissants. Very friendly people and good service. We came on a Sunday afternoon and were welcomed by smiling faces. We loved the raspberry tart, passion fruit meringue tart, Paris brest was my absolute favorite, and apple tart. Coffee and cappuccino were good too. We will be back for sure.

Blown away by how delicious everything was. My family and I stopped on the way home to New York from Cape Cod at the recommendation of my brother and sister-in-law. You did not disappoint. The croissants were top-tier and I will be dreaming about the peanut butter cookie.

Google
This little street corner bakery in Boston’s South End puts out some of the best pastries we have had. We tried the pecan tart, chocolate éclair and canelé. They all tasted amazing and were perfectly executed. Very few places produces a textbook canelé, with a crunchy exterior and custardy chewie interior with a hint of rum. This place nails them! We will definitely be back for more.

Google
Service excellent. Atmosphere really neat. Outdoor seating was cute. Pastries and treats looked amazing but all I stopped for was coffee. For a bakery or coffee shop first thing I look at is their offered size of a cappuccino. True cap sizing is 6oz. So if there are multiple sizes or large sizes of cap offered like 12 or 16 it’s a red flag. So I stuck with drip coffee, and unfortunately even this tasted very weak and had little flavor. I’d try this place again to get food but the coffee needs some work.

Yelp
EXCELLENT !!!!!!!!! Wow love this place , we need one in Hallandale Beach, Florida Started off with the Ciabatta loaf bread that when sliced and toasted is perfect for breakfast. Also got the Parisian ham n cheese sandwich to save for lunch later , toasted in oven for 10 min and ur in Heaven !!! My daughter ordered the Ham n Cheese croissant , this beauty is amazing . The favorite of mine is the Flamenkuche :)))) this pastry is salty but yummy, bacon and creme fraiche, mozzarella cheese with caramelized grilled onion on viennois bread OMG !!!! This doesn't stop .....the finale is the Almondine Tart .... The best ever pouched pears on dough covered in almond cream ..

Yelp
My wife and I had a terrible experience at Colette Bakery South Boston store recently. When we walked in, we noticed three employees behind the counter. All were wearing gloves, but they weren't using them properly. One of the workers was touching her face with her gloves on, another was on her phone, and the third was cleaning. When we ordered, the worker who was cleaning took our order without changing her gloves. We asked her to change them, and she did, but then she used a dirty tray covered in stains and old food to put our pastries on. It was disgusting. Another worker, who was touching her face with her gloves when we came in, also handled our food without changing her gloves. When we asked her to change them, she got mad and walked away without saying sorry. The person at the register was polite but not helpful. We asked if she was the boss, but she didn't answer. Overall, the staff didn't seem to understand how to handle food properly, and they were rude too. I reached out to the owner via email to share our concerns but never heard back. We've been to your other Colette Bakery locations in Medford and Melrose many times and enjoyed them, but this experience was awful. If things don't change at the South Boston store, we won't be going back, and we won't recommend it to others.

Yelp
Pastries: Eclair was okay... not much cream inside and wasn't the best. Layers were not flaky enough personally. Pain Au chocolate had two strings of chocolate but felt like it's not enough to cover the whole pastry Environment: staffs were very courteous and nice. Recommended the pastries and they were super friendly. The cafe itself was small and cute.

Yelp
Amazing lattes, always fresh pastries, very cute and clean inside and they work super fast so the wait is never too long. I just wish they were open all week days because they're my go-to before work.

Yelp
The departure of this bakery space's previous tenant was a tragedy, but Colette's presence is such a joy! They have a wide variety of pastries and breads, and they also serve coffee and tea. There's a number of small tables along the wall, as well as seats by the windows. I came on a Saturday around 8am and it was already buzzing with people. The servers are friendly as well. I got a Kouing Amann, a Pecan Paris Brest, and an Iced Chai Latte, while my friend got a Quiche Lorraine and a Cappuccino. I thoroughly enjoyed all of my treats and would definitely come back.

Yelp
Just a happenstance encounter with Colette Bakery on way home from a hard day with my little one also requesting some pampering. Mommy merely needed the toilet but the courteous staff who very obviously spoke French recommended the Canele caramelized to perfection. My caloric intake drill sargent said no, my angry child desiring nourishment huffed yes. Glad my weaker side won out. So moist and crème like on the inside.. crusty like brûlée on the exterior. Such a little thing, but so satisfying. My nine yr old doesn't quite understand the concept of "savoring each bite" quite yet, but within the eight seconds before his chocolate croissant was decimated into speckles of crackle remains, I took a sigh from the aroma of my blueberry hibiscus tea, releasing my resentment for selecting the non caffeinated option. I don't think Yelp is what it used to be, which is why I don't review until given a substantial reason. Here's a gem bakery you might find worth your while regardless of your level of exhaustion/need for mini respite.

Yelp
Canele: small but perfect outer shell and custardy inside Macarons: just the right size with rich and flavorful cream. The hazelnut was particularly good. Added plus: plenty of seats to sit outside

Yelp
Came Saturday 8am and was even more impressed with the selection and vibes! So happy to have this in the neighborhood for a lil treat. Prices are standard and not outrageous while quality is still top notch.

Yelp
Back in for another round but with my husband. He really enjoyed the pain aux raisin. It was perfect! I had the pain aux chocolat - wonderful and even ordered another plain croissant. We did get the chausson aux pommes because it looked looked so beautiful but it was a little disappointing- not any filling - I sound have gone with the tarte aux pommes. Another plus...great coffee!

Yelp
The new location is where the old Cafe Madeleine used to be on Columbus. It's a small space but the decor is cute and there are a few little tables if you want to sit there. They have pastries, desserts quiches, cookies and breads plus they have a coffee bar. The staff was friendly and I thought the prices were really reasonable compared to other cafes and bakeries.

Yelp
This new location of Colette Bakery is an absolute gem to have in the neighborhood. The team working there is friendly and their food is so delicious. I got a croissant (to compare to other neighborhood croissants) and it was perfectly flaky and buttery. I also got a viennois (which are hard to find at most other French bakeries in the US) and a lemon tart. They were both absolutely perfect and made me feel like I was back in France!! The prices here are also very appropriate... I've found that other bakeries will charge $7 for a croissant which I honestly just refuse to pay, but here everything is so delicious and the right price! The vibes are very bright and airy and I can't wait make this bakery a regular stop. Would highly recommend everyone to go here!

Yelp
There used to be a different bakery here that I loved but since they closed I haven't been by here in a while. I walked in because I thought it was a new dog bakery!!! There's a BIG picture of a DOG so wouldn't that make sense? Wanted to get treats for my pup but they don't have any. Tried the eclair, almost no filling. Staff is indifferent and rude. Also the girl did not know how to pronounce a lot of French pastries. Croissant was dry and soft at the same time - weird, not authentic. They made the pain au chocolat into some kind of pun which is also weird - the French usually prize authenticity but I guess not these guys.

Yelp
My husband and I got breakfast and afternoon snacks the other day. First of all, the employees are very friendly and it was not busy at 8:30 on a Sunday. I got a chouquette (crunchy eggy and barely sweet how I like it), flan Parisienne (which I loved with flecks of vanilla bean and not too sweet), Le Boston (almond topped slice of brioche that I feel I would like more if the brioche was soft like the caramel filled ones), and I wasn't a huge fan of the drip coffee. I also got Canele (awesome crunchy exterior and custardy inside), chocolate chip brioche (yummy), chocolate lava cake (excellent heated up in the microwave), pecan financier (I was surprised how much I didn't like it), and pain suisse (my husband really liked). Despite missing the bakery that was formerly here, it is very cute and feels like an authentic Parisian bakery.

Yelp
The best bread you can find in Boston area! Friendly and helpful employees, tasty desserts and drinks. Love this place! Fantastic addition to the South End neighborhood.

Remy R.

Yelp
One of the worst bakeries I've ever been to. They leave the door open so there are always massive flies landing on all the pastries, the environment is extremely unwelcoming to anyone who isn't white, and they treat their employees with blatant disrespect right in front of customers. The pastries are good but definitely not worth it for all the bad vibes and food safety violations.

Yelp
Exquisite. Go early, Buy everything that tantalizes your taste buds. It's all phenomenal. The quiche.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my experience at Colette Bakery. I had their pepper quiche and hibiscus blueberry tea - the quiche was so creamy and delicious, and the tea was great too. The bakery itself is so beautiful - the decor is so aesthetic, and the seating area is so cute. I really love that I got my tea in an elegant mug - it added to the chic vibe of the place. Also, the variety of pastries is amazing, and they all look so fresh - I wanted to try everything! And the prices are so good as well, which is a major plus. I know that I'll be returning to Colette soon to try their other pastries - I really like it and would 100% recommend it!

Yelp
Food is a little pricy but so delicious! The drinks were a little too light for my taste but maybe it's because I like things to be on the sweet side. I'm indecisive and the staff were so friendly and patient. It was so awesome they were speaking French! We definitely got there at a good time before it got so busy and confusing. The place is cute and clean, just a lovely place.

Yelp
I was excited to try this French style bakery but it left me disappointed. The croissant was such a disappointment. It felt like one of those croissants you get at a breakfast buffet at a Hampton inn. The curry chicken croissant was an interesting thing on the menu but it did not blow my mind. The sweet stuff they had was good. Got the crookie, which was good so if sweet pastries are you think this is the place to go.

Yelp
First time for me so giving 4 stars for now. I had the Quiche Lorraine (delicious, generous serving, I could have asked for it to be heated a bit more but didn't ) and a small English Breakfast tea (served in a proper cup so it stayed hot!). Service was very good: welcoming, cheerful, efficient. Ambiance was good: it was a rainy day and it was nice to step into a warm, comfortable, well-lit, well-laid out, clean establishment.

E L.

Yelp
Love everything at this bakery. Super excited that there is a Boston outpost. Classic French bakery and Viennoiserie.

Yelp
The best French bakery around, authentic and delicious pastries, friendly and kind staff. I recommend it to all my friends and people who ask for a recommendation for the best French pastries. the best !
