11 Best North Carolina Diners | Eater Carolinas

"A friend, neighbor, or co-worker might bring you here as this is not the type of place anyone would stumble upon by accident. This Glenwood neighborhood staple has slung plates for over 25 years. The entire menu reads like a love letter to every nook and cranny of the list of Southern comfort foods with a few unexpected surprises along the way. The list of ever-changing seasonal sides is just as impressive as the entrees: tomato pie, pineapple casserole, pinto beans, and mashed potatoes sit next to eight-ounce ribeye steaks, jumbo fried shrimp, and fried bologna sandwiches." - Sara Akhavan

Google
A classic old school dinner. They have American classics and unique specials, they rewrite the specials (breakfast and dinner) everyday so there is always something new on the menu. The prices are extremely fair and if it is a little more expensive you are gonna get a lot of food! I've been coming here for years and will continue to come! If you are looking for a spot to become a regular this is the one.

Google
Great place reasonable prices good service. Just good old comfort food one of my favorite dishes. Here is the clam chowder and order a side of shrimp in it. Been here dozens of time and never had a bad experience.

Google
Hmm, this was a tough one to rate. Personally I enjoyed the staff and down home country feel of the place. I'm a southern boy myself so good old fashion country I do well at times. The downside was the food was not impressive. It was okay but not much to talk about. There were dishes that I really enjoyed and other that I thought were more of something I'd find further north where taste isn't as important. Overall the food was good enough to go back for specific menu items but others just lacked in flavor. To be fair my son said that the cheesesteak was a close second for him. He has one in most every place that we try so I'd say he's trust worthy.

Google
Thank you to the waitress wearing pink today I think they called her Lauren, heard her saying where food is being brought in from can’t believe what I heard. She didn’t have a very pleasant attitude talking about hating Fridays. If I decide to go back hopefully I will get a better server. Sorry to inform you about your waitress but I know what I heard and seen. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with your business looking back at previous reviews.

Google
This is a hole in the wall diner. The food is good and reasonably priced.

Yelp
The food is usually pretty good here, at the Coliseum Country Cafe; especially if you're one of the regulars. For those of us that try to have a healthier diet, we visit once every 3-4 weeks. We usually don't get the same attention, or, speediness. To get a water refill, I had to take my cup to the checkout stand. I didn't mind- except the regulars had refills of coffee, tea, and water several times when the waitress passed our table with the multiple drink carafes. I think the servers and owners were born and raised at this cafe, as some things other than the price don't change. It is just an older diner that has seen thousands grace its tables. It is not dirty at all, just dingy with age. But, they are needing improvement, as the sanitation grade is only 91. But, if you forget about cholesterol, fats, sugars, carbs, sodium, and so forth, you can get a pretty decent, filling meal for a rather reasonable cost. Allergens are not listed, and, hard to ask about. If you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed. Order stuff that has to follow a recipe- pancakes, meat loaf, soups, and, the like. Other, simple items, seem like they just came out of a box to be served to you.

Yelp
A solid choice for true country cooking. Great food, reasonable prices and friendly service. Daily specials plus a full menu of regular items. They are open for breakfast which I understand is excellent. One of my favorites, and a constant on the menu, is the pimento cheese cornbread...it is delicious and unlike anything I ever had before. Coliseum cafe is one of only a few meat and three places that I know of in Greensboro and is a place worth your visit...but remember to bring cash!

Yelp
Excellent food & service. The best turkey club sandwich I've ever had. Food is all very fresh & tasty!! And a large serving for the price.

Yelp
Struggling with how many stars to give here. The atmosphere is inviting, clean and simple. The servers are friendly and efficient. The food is a mixed bag. I ordered the chopped sirloin with grilled onions with a side of mashed taters and gravy and a wedge salad with hard boiled egg slices. Nothing wowed me but it wasn't bad either. Just ok. The sirloin was nicely cooked but the onions had no flavor which is weird for onions. The mashed potatoes were homemade and creamy and the gravy was rich and savory, The salad was uninspired and the ranch bottled and not very good. You also get a bread of some sort and I went with the fried jalapeno cornbread, more of a pancake. If there was jalapeno in it, I couldn't detect it. It was served at room temp with cold butter. I hate it when I get served cold butter! I didn't eat most of it. I mostly enjoyed my meal but I'm not in a rush to go back. I may visit again for the flounder, that seems to be popular here. And don't forget CASH ONLY.

Yelp
Let me just get down to the bottom line: the Coliseum Country Cafe offers excellent southern style cooking that is second only to Mary B's Southern Kitchen. I am going with five stars even though 4.5 stars is probably more correct. I have been a couple of times over the last few weeks and have tried an array of items. Steak tips over rice: excellent flavor, especially in the gravy. I think there should be a little more meat for the price paid, however. Salisbury steak: also excellent, one of the best I've had in years. I have had quite a few of the veggies (I usually order an extra): pole beans, blackeyed peas and corn, squash casserole, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, greens, and green beans. All are very good. I'm fairly certain most are canned (not the casserole or mashed potatoes, which are both fresh), but they add a little to them that give them that little boost.  Corn bread: this is served in a much less common form: pancake form. And I like it. For one thing, it ensures freshness. A lot of places leave corn bread sitting around for hours, and it gets dry and stale. This appears to be made with each order and is fresh and tasty if a little mild. Sweet tea: well above average. The service here is friendly and accommodating. They work hard and take pride in what they do. There is one additional thing worth noting here: In looking at the photographs of the inside, I noticed a sign on the wall that would be considered by most to be racially insensitive. That sign is no longer on the wall, so if you saw that photo and it deterred you from eating here, it need not be so.  I am not saying the Coliseum Country Cafe is fully woke--I have no idea-- but they had the good sense to take that sign down. And I have enjoyed my lunches here amidst a racially diverse group of people.

Yelp
The Coliseum Country Cafe is located on the corner of Florida St. and Coliseum Bvld. Greensboro in an older strip mall. There is plenty of private lot parking. From the outside, the sign is well weathered and the building is showing its age all around. I didn't actually come here for the food, but an old tale involving a classic muscle car, and a pair of blue leather boots. But that's another story for another time entirely! Of course I checked the reviews before I came here (shout out to Karl K for his outstanding review) and found it was a mixed bag. Even after my friend and I sat in the parking lot we were going back and forth on actually going in. Finally the decision was made and we went in. Truth is, I'm really glad that we did. Inside it is your typical old school diner feel. Classic meat and 3 kind of place. Truly a gem from a bygone era. The menu was a single piece with sandwiches and salads on one side, and the specials of the day on the other. The menu changes daily, which I thought was a really cool thing. I went with the chicken fried steak and gravy, mashed potato's, mustard greens, and pimento cheese cornbread. A classic southern country lineup if ever there was one. The food was out in no time, nice and warm, and looked good. With only one bite of mashed potato and gravy I knew I had made the right choice. Everything was cooked properly and had a nice taste. The portion sizes were just right. The gravy had a nice pepper taste to it, and went well with the entire meal. The cornbread was certainly my favorite, and was cooked to order! I cant say I've had cornbread like this ever! It was made up like a pancake and was absolutely delicious! There were some grilled onion bits in it along with the pimento and cheese. Wow. Other items that patrons near by were getting looked great, and I overheard several people comment on how they enjoyed their lunch. I know I certainly did. They have deserts too, and they did look great, but I was too full to get one today. They seem to have a regular local following. Over all I'd say this is a solid 4.5 stars for a down home country cooking diner. The service was great, my glass stayed full, and I even got a drink to go. The waitress kept a check on us throughout the meal. The only real down side to this place is its location, and the fact that they only take cash. So be sure to bring cash if you come here. Other than that I'd gladly come back here any time, and definitely plan to.

Yelp
They are a fairly good diner but they only take cash. The employees are all friendly and you can tell that they've been doing this for a while as everyone is constantly moving and no motion is wasted. The meals are priced reasonably with mine costing $9 and came with a drink, two sides and a choice of bread. Because of their cash only policy I was unable to get dessert. There's always next time.

Michael W.

Yelp
It's your standard meat and 3 type place. The staff seem to be very experienced- I'm guessing they've all worked there for years. I get a vegetable plate every time. Pretty sure they are real mashed potatoes- not instant. Gravy is good. I always get vegetables, turnip greens, pintos, field peas and corn- the standard country cooking stuff. A standout is the jalapeño corn bread. It's a cornbread pancake with jalapeño's in it. Good stuff!

Yelp
We have eaten here for years! Might be my favorite restaurant in the Triad. Not your typical diner, the food is a notch above. Standouts include many of the entrees, fried cornbread, fish and shrimp (on Fridays!), and since the portions are big, take a dessert home for later. The staff and feel of his place are old school and between the great food, all of the regulars and our favorite waitress, Tammy, nothing comes close to the charm of Coliseum Cafe.

Yelp
Another excellent lunch here Tuesday, this one including one of my favorite dishes at this neat little country cafe, Chicken Fried Steak with perfect White Gravy, well seasoned with salt and plenty of ground black pepper. Throw in an order of the house made Sloppy Joe (damn, I still love these things). several nice side dishes, including mashed potatoes with more of the White Gravy, and their well sized Iceberg Wedge with Russian Dressing, and it probably don't get much better.

J N.

Yelp
This was the worst food and experience. The food was bland no flavor the greens are pre-frozen no flavor, even the fries were tasteless. The Philly cheese tasted like cafeteria food, the belt was dry and flavorless and there was hair in my sons burger and someone else's drink. NO. NO. NO. NEVER again. I had to walk out.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
The food was wonderful! Bring cash, they don't take card. ATM across the street. I got fried whitefish, Italian green beans, baked potato and fried cornbread. I really wanted to eat every morsel but my belly had no more room. Probably the best fried fish I've ever had. The service was great too. I came during non peak hours (3pm). If you've got a hankering for home cooking then this is the place.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in Greensboro I always stop in to get the best blueberry pancakes I've ever had! Today while I was paying for my to go order there was a huge, loud commotion coming from the back of your restaurant. I could hear a man yelling at someone. I felt bad for whoever was on the receiving end of his ugly, angry temper issue. He must be a cook, as I didn't enjoy my pancakes today. I could almost taste the hate he has for his own existence. I can only assume they were cooked by the screaming asshole in the back, but who knows, it could have just been a bad day for your kitchen staff. When I left there was a couple standing outside so I asked them if they were trying to get away from the yelling too. They informed me they were regulars and it's normal to hear yelling and arguing in this establishment. The owner needs to know how the staff behave while they are not around. I will not be back after learning this is normal behavior from your staff. Good luck, you have a good thing that a bad apple will definitely destroy if not addressed.

Yelp
Coliseum Cafe is open again with inside dining. Carolyn has updated the look inside and it looks really nice. Still has the same great food and sides. I'm glad they survived the political shut down. Thanks Carolyn and staff

Yelp
Smile, say "Hey", and sit with a stranger. David introduced me to this spot about a year ago (Thanks Dave). This is a cash only diner that the locals love. I did notice as in other reviews its not the most choice side of town BUT the customers during lunch usually are wearing business suits or are proud AARP card carriers. if you show up in the middle of lunch hours, you will have a wait UNLESS you follow my initial advice above. the decor is old and dated while the wall are dressed with old favorites like pics of Andy, Opie, and Shirley Temple to name a few. The menu is printed on plain white paper in document protectors. which indicates a constant changing menu (A++). Fish Fridays are my favorite; flounder w/ shrimp option and a good selection of sides that include greens, beans, soups, basic salads, and a sweet treat like Watergate salad, yum (Thanks Dap)! About $10 gets you an entree, 2 sides and choice of bread. the jalapeno cornbread is pan fried and I like even though it could use a dash of something. If you like good simple food put this place on your list of 3D's to try. BTW, the staff is friendly and they hustle their butts off, so don't be skeerd to compliment and tip :) Keep your expectations low and you will be blown away!

Yelp
I would have never known about this place if it weren't for my friend bringing me here for one of their flounder fridays. It is in the middle of a fairly rough part of Greensboro, in an old run-down shopping center. Despite the location, Coliseum Country Cafe is a great little place to grab some lunch. It has a small town atmosphere, but everyone is very welcoming. There are families, construction workers, and business men all grabbing lunch at the same time. The walls of the place are plastered with old movie posters and advertisements that bring a nice sense of nostalgia to the place. As I said above, I went for their Flounder Friday. This is a choice that I'm very glad that I made. You can order the flounder either fried or grilled. I went for the grilled option, because I was trying to be a little healthier than I had in the last couple of days. The flounder took up most of the plate. It was a huge portion about the size of a football, and it was just as good as it was big. The fish was very moist and didn't even need any sauce. The meal came with two sides. I chose the mashed potatoes and gravy and the baked apples. Both were very good. The service was good as well. Every time that I finished my sweet tea, it was refilled right away. This is one of my only complaints: the sweet tea could have been a little bit sweeter, but I'm very particular about my sweet tea, so take that as you will. Overall a nice little gem hidden away in a downtrodden area. Definitely worth supporting local and grabbing some lunch there. Tip: CASH ONLY

Yelp
I drove past this place and decided to stop in and have breakfast. They stop serving at 11 and it was just past 11. They still took my order for eggs and bacon. That was awesome. They staff was very friendly and eggs were cooked perfectly. This place is outdated and needs some major renovations. Seemed to be pretty busy and the server stated that they have a lot of regulars that eat there multiple times a week. Next time I'm in town I will try their lunch and give another review.

Yelp
Me and the girlfriend love this place when we get the chance to go! They don't really keep hours that give us a chance to go often. Wish they where open weekends. But the food is really good home cooking like a little old southern grandma would make....well it's what I imagine anyways my grandmothers where both Michigan ladies. You won't leave hungry that's for sure and the prices don't hurt your wallet either!
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
To say that this plae is off the beaten path is perhaps an uderstatement. You will not find it unless a friend drags you in, but once the food starts appearing you'll be thanking them. Long list of veggies and meat and sandwich options. Love the boomerang formica tables and retro graphic art. True down-home feel here. Lunch was packed with folks waiting for seats on this Friday afternoon. I had a Hawaiian baked chicken with tomatoes & greens and fried cornbread. See the pictures. Only two words. Yum yum. The fried flounder platter I saw at another table looked HUGE and mighty tasty. Too much for me a this visit, but I'll be back. I live in Atlanta but visit once a month. This is just one more reason to make the trip. (along with Stameys & Country BBQ and Neeses sausage American Legion hot dogs and ....) I'll have to check on breakfast. I'll betcha they do it well too

Yelp
Fish Friday!

Yelp
Wonderful homemade desserts. Try to get there when they have banana pudding. Friday night flounder special is great. You can get it fried or grilled. Very tasty and a generous portion. Comes with 2 sides and a beverage. What a deal!

Yelp
Just had Carolyn's homemade Chow Chow and it puts commercial made Chow to shame. It is great

Yelp
Amazing home cooking!! Great value. If they have the tomato pie on the menu the day you go GET IT!. And remember, they only take cash

Yelp
This is a great restaurant, good food good atmosphere, friendly people. Despite the location, Coliseum Country Cafe is a great place to eat.

Jan L.

Yelp
This is an old school southern diner with the sweetest wait staff in Greensboro. As local diners go, the food is exceptional - expertly cooked and seasoned, with a wide variety of entrees, vegetable sides, and deserts. The prices are also the lowest in the area for local diner fare, which is probably a reflection of their location in a run down shopping center in the Glenwood neighborhood. It's good to know that they do not take credit cards, and they are closed on weekends. Their most popular meal is Friday lunch, when they serve up flounder portions that are so large they literally hang off the sides of the large serving plates. This is a great choice for those who love southern comfort food, but maybe not a good one for those who are watching their waistlines, or blood sugar and cholesterol levels. We eat there a couple times a week.

Mike B.

Yelp
Great food. Good service. Staff is consistently friendly. Specials each day are worth the trip. Payment options are limited but that's the only down side. I strongly recommend the fried chicken and/or field peas.

Roger H.

Yelp
Love the crunchy and fresh fried chicken it is much better than commercial chicken places. The squash casserole is another favorite of mine.

Keith S.

Yelp
Service seems to have suffered lately. Maybe they cut back on personal to save money. I got tired of waiting on my meal and left. They were not very busy but the food never came. A place like this won't be around if they don't food on the table.

Ace T.

Yelp
From outside, it doesn't look like much. That really doesn't matter, though. Delicious Southern-style food is served quickly by a courteous staff. The prices can't be beat either.

Tracey T.

Yelp
We love the food here. Veggie omelet is made with fresh veggies and is highly recommended. All the food is good and the service is great. Shannon is very friendly and we look forward to seeing her every time we visit.

Evon M.

Yelp
Tribute to the Owner and Staff first... I am not a veteran reviewer but I have read all the reviews and I want to capitalize on the statement made by Carolina Trekkers, Greensboro; "Sixteen years ago this restaurant was acquired by a lady who wants to be sure her customers have a good meal for a fair price." And I would like to take that statement to the next level of what she has provided to the community in the form of generosity, humanity, and kinship by persevering merely by *not* changing the tradition of Coliseum Country Café. I saw words used to describe the spot as, 'gem', 'jewel', and 'cult following'. I am reminded of the movie, 'It's a Wonderful Life' where without the life of George Bailey and what he brought in the way of his savings and loan business to the people of Bedford Falls that those lives would have been altered and possibly displaced. She has given unselfishly to the business of making people happy through the meals and dishes she and her staff create to deliver an experience that I can see by the number of recent reviews is having a lasting effect. There are lots of special places in the world and this is one of them for sure. Not only is there great food which just about all the reviews show are raving about 'Fish Friday', but this mix of happy eaters have a place behind the curtain of mainstream food haunts to go to for the familiar. I had one meal so far on 'Fish Friday'. The flounder filet was big and flakey and grilled using a brush of butter with just the right amount of smoke. The collard greens were steamed with a bacon flavor which I really liked and the jalapeno cornbread pancake was light using fine-milled cornmeal and just the right amount of 'hot' from the jalapeno. But I want to point out the clam chowder. It was chock-full of clams, bite-sized red potatoes in a broth, not thickened, with some mild herbs. I saw many review comments about 'not healthy' food in general and I will refrain from disagreeing but if one is conscientious of eating healthy then the choices on the menu I see lend themselves to less fat and carbohydrates. So pick those instead of the chicken-fried steak and country gravy! I plan on trying the salmon cakes and salads next.

Yelp
fantastic. clean, and fresh on the inside. service was friendly and attententive. menu printed daily with specials but also a vast selection available . burger was nice and simple. pimento cheese a bit "mayonnaisey", but not inedible. turkey was fine, dressing was wonderful, collard greens were neat, mashed potatoes were simple and flavorful enough, gravy was present and satiating, just as my grammatical errors are. highly recommended, a place I look forward to returning to frequently in order to try out new things. they care about you here. and that, my friends, at most restaurants, often gets 86'd quickly like the flounder on Fridays at Coliseum Cafe.

KC C.

Yelp
This was my first visit to the cafe, not sure why I have not tried it out before. It is the older style of cafe, no fancy frills but the food was very good. The portion size was amazing. I could have split a plate with my mom and when we ordered sweet potato pie...the slice was HUGE. I highly recommend this place, though check the hours, not open on weekend...(which is sad) and it only takes CASH...

A B.

Yelp
I must agree with Randy B. below....unless someone local drags you to this place, you'd most likely never find it...but darn it's good if you're craving simple home-cooking and plenty of it. I have a weakness for meatloaf and mash with accompanying veggies...their meatloaf is spiffy -- I can honestly say I've never met one I haven't enjoyed in any location -- it's just a matter of tweaking the differences. The servings are huge and most often appears the next day for my breakfast or lunch. I love their jalapeno cornbread, different than I've ever had before because it's more like a cornbread pancake (which means fried vs a slice of cake), but I love it. A clean place with friendly, quick waitstaff. Lots of "antique" signage on the walls in the vein of Andy Griffith, Elvis, etc. The place does fill up fast, so if you're going for lunch be there before 11:30. Cash only as best I recall -- no debit cards.

Felisha S.

Yelp
i love country cooking & definitely got my fix here!! everyone was so nice & the "regulars" made you feel at home.
