10 Best Breakfast Spots in Maui for a Fresh Start to the Day | Condé Nast Traveler

"At Colleen's at the Cannery, breakfasts are inspired, with options like tofu-veggie wraps and heartier dishes like Hawaiian sweet bread French toast and melt-in-your-mouth croissants stuffed with eggs, cheese, and local Maui tomato. The Hangover Cure—potatoes, jack cheese, ham, onion, and chilies, all fried together on a skillet—does exactly what it promises. The space can get a little boisterous during breakfast and lunch, but waitstaff juggle tables deftly." - Kris Fordham

This is the perfect spot to fuel your adventures off of the road to Hana. It provides good eats for breakfast (served until 11:30 AM) and lunch. I've had both. You can't go wrong with a breakfast sandwich or a hamburger. The portions are generous so it's a good way to energize either before or after hitting the trails or just exhausted after the winding road. Seating is limited and everything is made to order so you'll want to be patient. Enjoy an iced coffee and company while you wait.

It was my first time having lunch here, and we picked a good time. We got there at 1:00 and got a corner "booth". Sarah and Josie both helped us out with taking our food and drink orders and bringing them out to us. Miles made us a delicious grilled Mahi salad, the best chicken salad sandwich I can remember having, and a grilled chicken sandwich. Oh, and the ginger mint tea was absolutely refreshing. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and it was a very nice time.

Google
We stopped in to see the area and found this place. Very quaint and friendly. We ordered a tuna melt and the upcountry beef burger. Both were perfectly prepared and fresh. We shared an order of fries as the portion was very generous. Love the crispy battered fries. We picked up a couple of pastries for the road as they looked great and tasted just as great for breakfast the next day. Highly recommended.

Google
we had really poor service. took about 20 minutes to order than it took over an hour to get our food. the food was good, but by the time we got it our entire party was hangry. when we asked about our food we were told there were a lot of carryout orders. By the end of our meal nearly 2 hours after we arrived i ended up walking the check up to the cashier because I was tired of waiting.

Google
Fantastic! Portobello sandwich but beware it has blue cheese. Our server was wonderful and we enjoyed the atmosphere. Plus the cocktails and mocktails were fantastic as well.

MNicole

Google
Food was great! We got the turkey pesto and chicken salad sandwiches. They were both fantastic, and the fries were amazing. We arrived just before Happy Hour started, and it seemed like the staff was scrambling a bit trying to get the bar side of the restaurant open. Our server was kind, though quite busy.

Google
Roasted beet salad was amazing. The Ruben sandwich was the best I've ever had. Great food, friendly staff, beautiful decor.

Google
These burgers use local Maui cattle beef. The best burger I’ve ever had! I could smell and taste the freshness of the mahi-mani for their fish and chips. Fries are worth the $. They offer a nice selection of wines and spirits. Come for a drink or eat-in for delicious food. Casual ambiance. Attentive service. $$ Highly recommended. Will definitely revisit.

Yelp
My first time having lunch here and we picked a good time because it was easy to get a table right away. Our servers were Sarah and Josie and both were attentive, but not overbearing. We were a party of 3 and chose the Mahi salad, the Grilled chicken burger and the chicken salad sandwich. All of it was cooked by Miles and was super tasty. The chicken salad sandwich included dried cranberries and was the best I ever remember having. I also had the ginger mint iced tea which was perfect. I look forward to going again.

Yelp
While the food was good as usual our server seemed indifferent to our needs We initially experienced a delay with our drink order, which our server attributed to a lost ticket. However, another server delivered my partner's drink, indicating the ticket wasn't lost. The food arrived promptly, and we enjoyed our meal. However, when I asked a server for the check to expedite my departure for an appointment across the street, she seemed reluctant to process the payment. I gave her my credit card and asked her to run the check. She came to our table to ask my partner if she wanted anything else, despite my earlier indication I was ready to leave, and that my partner would stay for a couple of more minutes to finish her meal. I felt our server's behavior prioritized her needs over ours, which was disappointing. I've had many better experiences at this restaurant in the past and appreciate the its open, airy atmosphere. I understand that prices have increased over the years, but I hope my next visit to the restaurant will be a better experience overall Sincerely, [Your Name]"

Yelp
Colleen's at the Cannery is a wonderful place to stop for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. They have comfortable seating, and they serve everything from breakfast and fresh made pizzas to burgers and fish and chips!!! Portions are always generous and everything is delicious. I look forward to stopping by Colleen's next time we are on Maui!!

Yelp
Came here for lunch with a friend. It is located in the Haiku Cannery and there is plenty of parking. It's a casual, airy restaurant with lots of natural light. The service is fast and friendly. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries. Not only was this the best burger I've had on Maui, it's one of the best burgers I've ever had! First it is big, I could only finish half of it. The beef patty is cooked perfectly, tender and juicy. Lots of toppings sends this burger over the top!

Yelp
My party and I went zip lining nearby and were referred to Colleen's. We all came here to lunch and in SOOO glad we did. We had a rather large party, which filled half the restaurant, but they accommodated us very easily. The waitress was so friendly, and constantly kept our drinks full. As far as food, I ended up ordering the venison burger (which is not on the menu , and is made from the local deer on the island). It was extremely good. The meat had a rich flavor that I haven't experienced before. I also ordered sweet potato fries, and no joke they were the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. The "crunch to fluff" ratio was perfect (the regular fries were equally as good). This restaurant is a little out of the way of where most tourists are going to be, but it's soooo worth coming out to Haiku, even if it's just to eat here. This meal was a major highlight of the whole vacation

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by the grocery store in the same complex when we were looking for hot food. It was around 4pm and it was pretty busy in there. What we swallowed: *FISH AND CHIPS: This dish was delicious. The batter on the fish was tarty and crispy, the fish inside was piping hot and moist. The chips were cooked to perfection. This was an awesome dish and the portion was so HUGE it could easily be split by two adults. *BUTTER PASTA: Both my kids said this was one of the better butter pastas they have had and truly enjoyed it. *BACON BLUE BURGER: Hubby likes his burgers well done and they cooked this one perfectly: well done but still juicy! This was really tasty and the portions were huge! We really liked this place. There was no air con but a warm cross breeze and that was the only downfall (we were sweating bullets). The server was really nice and we even grabbed two big cookies to share later on our way out (which were both yummy btw).

Yelp
Best kale Cesar! The Kale was massaged & the dressing was really good! I got it with grilled chicken and the chicken was really moist. Definitely will come back here when I'm in Haiku!

Yelp
Came here after zip lining on a Monday afternoon. One of the instructors recommended this place. It was a bit odd as there were no signs to seat ourselves or wait to be seated. After asking the cashier at the front she said to seat ourselves. We waited not a single person acknowledged us or anything. After about 5 minutes I finally had to go up and ask the cashier for menus. Thats when we finally got some attention. Not off to a great start..... We ordered the portobello mushroom veggie burger, Bacon Cheddar burger, bacon avocado turkey wrap and Reuben Sandwich. Fries are an additional charge of $2.75 so we just got one order to share. The fires were pretty salty. Luckily we only got one order. The burgers and wrap were pretty dry. Like. The burger patty was not juicy and lacked flavor. The portobello burger was also under seasoned. We didn't say anything cause we were just hungry and just wanted to finish and leave. Not very impressed with this place. I wouldn't recommend coming here.

Yelp
Colleen's is a local Haiki fun restaurant, food is good! I work at a fancy restaurant in Wailea and your Beet salad kills it!

Yelp
I was very surprised by this restaurant! I usually prioritize the appearance, atmosphere, music, and, of course, the food when dining out. Initially, I wasn't impressed with those aspects, but I was proven wrong because the food was delicious! This place has definitely become one of my favorites in Maui. The staff greeted me warmly with smiles, and the meals were fresh, and clearly cooked to order. While the menu may not be anything special, they made the overall experience remarkable! I didn't get to try their cocktails or desserts, but I'm looking forward to another opportunity to go and enjoy their extensive menu.

Yelp
Hole in the Hawaii for Hawaii locals ! Stumbled upon this place. Great food very laid back which included the service which is fine if you're not on a timeline (or with a toddler) :) delicious food! A great spot for someone looking to get outside of tourist town or on the road to Hana.

Yelp
I was excited to try this restaurant as the first food stop in Maui! I read an article hyping it up, so we added it to the itinerary. Inside has a small diner-like arrangement where you have free seating, and a server will soon come to grab your order. We got the fish and chips, house salad with ahi, and mahi mahi burger. Fish and Chips (4/5) The fish was extremely crispy without being too greasy. We really liked the breading, and the fish itself was very fluffy. The fries were also really crispy, but I think it was a little too oily for my liking. We also wished the fish was more seasoned, but when doused in the tartar sauce, it was delicious. House Salad with Ahi (3.5/5) The ahi was amazing. We got it cooked rare, and it was seasoned and seared nicely. However, the salad itself was dressed too heavily with the vinaigrette, so it masked the freshness of the salad. Mahi Mahi Burger (3/5) This was the most light dish we got. The burger had onion, tomato, lettuce, and tartar sauce. I liked the fish, but do think it could be seasoned more. The burger was a good bite to contrast the heaviness of the other dishes though. The serving size was massive! Lots of food served on each plate. And service was also amazing. We were frequently checked in, and all of our requests were answered quickly. We had a good time here overall!

Yelp
The best breakfast!!! Every time we come to Maui and do/see the beautiful Haleakalā sunrise we come here first breakfast afterwards. They have the freshest and best breakfast. From their omelettes, pancakes, speciality items, you cannot go wrong. Local, low-key restaurant, great customer service with the best breakfast!

Yelp
We like Colleen's place. We drove to Haiku to see a friend's oil painting. It was raining so we had a late lunch of Roasted Beet Salad with Grilled Chicken, and an Upcountry Beef Burger with a Guinness and a Mango Scone for dessert. Excellent table service in an airy room.

Ellen D.

Yelp
Great food in a nice, casual atmosphere. Don't skip the fries! The service was great as well.
google avatar

Yelp
No wait for seating. Service was friendly, quick and concise. Food was amazing. I've tried the tuna melt, Reuben and the beef burger. The tuna melt was delicious, and came in homemade bread. The Reuben was best Reuben I've ever had by far, with homemade corned beef. The burger was simple, with local island raised beef. This burger proves that burgers don't need to be complicated if they're made with quality ingredients and love. All in all, wonderful atmosphere, service and food. Looking forward to dining here again!

Yelp
Colleens is a great casual place to eat and drink. Ample parking. Offers a plethora of options for whatever you're craving. They have breakfast, lunch, a popular happy hour and dinner. Casual vibes. Repeat customer, can't go wrong here!
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
Didn't feel too welcome - they cater to locals and don't care too much for you if you are visiting the area. We started at the bar for happy hour - not all that happy. At first, the bartender was inquiring into our drinks but mostly left us alone. She seemed more interested in singing along to the music and chatting with others. We don't need to be friends but it would've been nice if she were at least a bit more friendly with us. We got a few beers and a slice of pizza as an app. We moved over to the other side for dinner since they don't start serving dinner until 5:30pm. Our server over there was very nice and quickly took orders for dinner. We got the mahi mahi fish and chips and a pizza. Both were good sized portions and came out hot. The pizza was a little greasy and heavy from the toppings so you kind of had to fork and knife it. It wasn't as good as our slice of pepperoni at the bar. All in all, food wasn't bad but nothing to go out of your way for. Given the overall vibe, we do not plan on going back. We'd rather try somewhere else.
google avatar

Rhona C.

Yelp
Staff were nice. French fries were fresh and delicious. The mahi mahi fish and chips was the best meal of all our orders. Burgers with bacon were also good. The rest of the food was ok. They don't serve ranch but their Caesar dressing/sauce definitely makes up for the ranch. Bathroom could use a bit better cleaning maybe some air freshener. Came in 10min before 11a, but can't order lunch menu not until 11. We decided to stay. But they did take our order not til 11 for lunch entree/menu. They brought out food around 11:25a. Would not mind coming back, but probably would try other place as well. Overall, the place was ok.

Yelp
Despite having a wealth of fresh fish, plate lunch, local eatery options, sometimes you just succumb to being a mainland gremlin and yearn for good ol'-fashioned American cuisine... My bf and I were suddenly hit with a pasta craving and, unfortunately, relented... Colleens is classic American comfort food, kind of evokes a homier/better Olive Garden :') Located next to Haiku Market, plenty of parking in the supermarket plaza. Service was a little slow (15-20 mins between each dish). AHI POKE: This is drowning in sesame oil LOL. Actual components, like the fish, avo, and veg were good portions, but this was almost inedible bc of the sheer amount of grease VODKA PENNE PASTA: Pretty much what it is. Creamy sauce + al dente noodles + shredded cheese. Portions are b i g TRUFFLE MUSHROOM PIZZA (small): This is also... Big... For a supposed "small". Cheese is baked right into the dough, & mushrooms are crispy/flavorful. We picked up two pastries from their display for breakfast-- the Lilikoi Pocket & Blueberry Muffin-- both of which were resoundingly average. Sort of dry. This place is probably good if you just love American food. NOTE: Bathrooms are really dirty here... Idk what that says about the general sanitation of the staff

Erin D.

Yelp
We've been eating at Colleen's for many years. Her food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the wait help is mostly . The ambiance isn't that great, but at least you get to sit down and be waited on.

Cheryl V.

Yelp
I'm a Haiku resident who orders pizzas a lot Last one was not good quality, huge doughy Crust, and a $7.00 increase , not impressed Probably not going to order here again :(( Thumbs down
google avatar

Yelp
We came here for dinner last night & I was disappointed that our server Stephanie didn't offer us the pizza menu. Today after golfing we came here for their happy hour special & asked if they had a pizza menu & yes they did! Now let's start with the drinks they are good however you do get glass that is over the top with ice..not a fan of that! I do have to point out out they have an upcountry burger that cost less on the dinner menu then the happy hour menu..I'm not sure who thought of that incredible idea.. lol! I hope the pizza we ordered delivers in taste since I'm sure we're getting a surcharge for takeout. This is really the only restaurant in Haiku so it is a gathering place for locals & visitors.

Yelp
If you are a person of color watch out for this place we wanted to just stop in & try it ... the customer was very rude in front of us slamming a door in our face making a comment along with very very rude cashier that would not seat us asked an impolite question ... but our time spent in there was very uncomfortable towards us sort of reeking of slight racism won't be back to this small part of Maui

Yelp
I highly recommend the fish and chips and the chicken salad sandwich. BAM. Flavor explosion. The fish is beer battered but not puffy and full of air. The fries were done to perfections. The chicken salad sandwich is very well done and seasoned perfectly. Service is, I am still here, great. And a good atmosphere also. Skip the high prices over booked touristy spots and eat well. Good food, good prices, good people.! GET SOME!!!!

Yelp
Great food at a decent price! I would highly recommend this place for the yummy burgers, beet salad & the Rueben sandwich. Great service & nice people!

Yelp
Stopped here today for a late lunch. The restaurant is highly recommended by Trev at Northshore Zipline Company. Interesting ambience, the accent wall has this cool oversized wallpaper type of stencil. There are large oversized classic framed mirrors. The decor is creative and I enjoyed taking it in. The food was homemade and quality. I had the bacon cheeseburger, my wife split a chicken salad sandwich with a friend. Zero complaints. The bread and my bun was freshly baked. The burger had a large generous patty, pretty sure it was hand formed.( I don't get too excited about burgers, this one was good) My wife had the sweet potato fries, I had the regular fries. They were crispy and perfect. I like tartar sauce to dip my fries. The server indulged me, with no looks or comments of WHY? Local craft beers are available, and I tried the Pau Hana Pilsner. Good. After zip lining, my wife and her friend cheered with a cocktail. Also good. The server was great, quick with suggestions and options. They were out of quite a few things, our fault for being late for lunch. It is proof of their freshly prepared food. The prices are Maui reasonable. Colleen's is worth the beautiful drive. Next time I'm in Maui, I'll be back.

Yelp
Fish & Chips are amazing, & you get a huge portion!! Probably my favorite pizza on the island, as well. Staff is always courteous & attentive. Go get yourself some very reasonably priced, excellent tasting, high quality food @ Colleen's, you won't be disappointed!!

Yelp
Food was great! We got the turkey pesto and chicken salad sandwiches. They were both fantastic, and the fries were amazing. Yelp
Colleen's is our local go-to when we wanna stay close to home near Haiku town. Probably the best consistently good fish and chips- IMHO better than Paia Fish House. Honestly I've heard it said there are 2 chefs and I have experienced the difference when it comes to this menu item. The good news is we've apparently only had that happen once in 10 or 12 orders. It's simply my favorite. Colleen's serves a huge portion of Ono, a great Hawaiian white fish. I haven't weighed it, but it must be at least 16 ounces- 4 big pieces of beer battered goodness with a large portion of batter style fries. I've always loved tartar sauces and theirs is very good- order an extra. This is easily a meal to split! Just to combine it with a counter balance of freshness, I like to order one of their fish tacos-actually more like a fish taco salad. If I could make a recommendation to Colleen's, I'd say consider adding a small bit of salad or Cole slaw just to add that fresh bit to this large entree. Hey! Other winners: Local venison burger; Reuben Sandwich; Maui Beef Burger; seafood noodle dishes are awesome- not sure if they might only be specials or not, but the one we had once was awesome! Essentially, if you're staying upcountry, or as the end of a Road to Hana day, it's a good stop- a place locals call home for food.

Yelp
I love Colleens for so many reasons. 1st: There's always a surf contest playing in the background. 2nd: The happy hour is top notch. The mai tai is a solid well-balanced drink. But be weary it has as much alcohol as a long island ice tea. 3rd: You can't go wrong with any of their fantastic pizzas. My favorite is their pesto and bbq chicken pizza. Yes, that's all on one pizza. Mind blown. 4th: It is a great place to relax among beautiful tropical-themed decorations with friendly people around.

Yelp
We stopped in to snag a drink while waiting for dinner across the street at Nuka. Our drinks were absolutely phenomenal- made with fresh juices, crafted with intention- and gorgeous to admire. Our server was quite kind, and very knowledgeable about the menu; she also created a few special drinks for the evening. Although we just stopped in for one drink, we left knowing that we would be back for more in the future.

Yelp
Went for breakfast and had an amazing meal. Service was friendly and attentive. They make a great body mary! Everyone loved their food. Check out the pics.

Yelp
This was a real laid back, friendly, home-like restaurant. It reminded me a lot of the food that mom used to make. The restaurant offered home grown, farm fresh, organic food. It was seriously delicious. I did not know organic bacon could taste so good, but it was thick, semi-sweet, fresh, and juicy and made my favorite sandwich of all time, the BLT better than Ive ever tasted. My husband, had the International breakfast that looked delicious, and very filling. WE will definitely be back to try their pizza on Friday.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a great meal at Colleen's. Caesar salad first followed by Steak, fish and shrimp. Dessert was delicious too.

Yelp
Service here has always been terrible and the food is overpriced . Every time I'm here I always remember why I don't like this place bad service

Elle B.

Yelp
I have never had a worse dining experience. From service, cleanliness to food. From the moment we walked in until we left the restaurant we were treated as though we were an inconvenience. Server barely acknowledged us. We sat in a booth, the seats were wet and covered with sand. Only positive is that the waiter did not mess up our order. All three breakfasts were disgusting. Nothing was seasoned correctly, either no salt or drowning in it. Food was either grossly over cooked or undercooked. Black coffee was ok if that means anything. No refills. The waiter could not of been more rude. By the way, in life it's way easier to be kind than arrogant. Especially when you get paid in gratuity. Back in the day Colleen's was our go to breakfast spot. It used to have very friendly service (waiters who smiled and used basic polite words like thank you and your welcome) the food used to be things like homemade from scratch hollandaise/dressings and fresh produce and fish. Bring back the aloha both in your service and food, at least wipe down the seats to sit in. Absolutely a complete waste of $100.
google avatar

Mikey S.

Yelp
Old school diner vibe, mostly locals, friendly staff, good food. Service can be slow sometimes, be patient.
google avatar

Christi W.

Yelp
Great breakfast!!!! Traditional eggs over easy, bacon, potatoes and amazing Rye bread toast!!! Yummy Bloody Mary also
google avatar

Angelita S.

Yelp
I am not sure why the haters marked this closed. We just ate there 8.20.23. That being said, I almost skipped this place because of all the ugly reviews and I am so glad I didn't. We did not feel unwelcome. Matter of fact everyone was smiling and the place was jammed packed. Not to mention, this was the best Eggs Benedict I have had in a long time. Perfectly poached eggs and the homemade hollandaise sauce was delicious. We did not eat out often, but after we volunteered next door for the fire victims relief, the locals told us to try this place. Best on the island they said, and we agree. Wish we were there. Beautiful eatery in a repurposed cannery.

Naai K.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast on our way in from Hana before heading to Kahului. We were seated once we walked in but no service of water or even a hello as we sat at our table for over 10min. I understand it was a little busy atm but we waited. After our waitress finally came to take our order which she was not too friendly... we waited for a while to get our meals as we watched the tables next to us who walked in after us get their food before us. The food was ok, service not too good.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
I haven't been to Colleen's in years, but I was in the area so I decided to give it a go. My mother and I split a chicken salad wrap and a grilled ono and avocado wrap. While neither of the wraps came with any sides, they were both pretty filling and tasty. My mom thought the ono pulled a little in the dry side, but i thought the pesto and mango chili dressing on it disguised that pretty well. I've never had a bad meal here, everything's pretty tasty. Until next time, Colleen's!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best fish I have ever had ANYWHERE! And I am a seafood lover from the Pacific Northwest and have eaten in some of the most famous seafood places in parts of the world. The mahi mahi fish and chips are the absolute best. The fish is firm but juicy and flaky. The batter is super crispy and perfectly seasoned. Not oily at all. Their fries are the PERFECT vessel for malt vinegar and pepper. Oh and their tartar sauce! So zingy! I love the amount of capers in it. The mahi mahi sandwich is dang near as good. A great brown to the outside and a perfect cook throughout. Others at the table raved about their beet salads with chicken and with mahi. Just about a perfect lunch spot.
google avatar

Nani S.

Yelp
We drive 35-40 minutes for our multi-generational breakfast at Colleen's because the food is just that great! Pastries, espresso, organic options, FRESH fruits and hearty entrees that exhibit culinary flair. Colleen's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and have a daily happy hour. Dish options include Filet Mignon, fresh island fish, pizza and hormone free Maui Cattle Company beef. My breakfast faves are the eggs Benedict and Hangover Cure. Very reasonably priced with friendly and prompt service!

Eats Too Much F.

Yelp
Great little out of the way place tucked away in an old strip mall. The staff is friendly and the parking is easy. The burgers are bomb and the fish is solid. The seared tuna salad is really tasty and very healthy. The garlic shrimp and fries are wildly tasty and very unhealthy If you're up in Haiku and looking for a place, this is it.

Yelp
this spot is one of 3 places that i could recommend on maui. thank you Colleen for ensuring that the food and service is always great! i am constantly disappointed with the food situation in the islands. thank you for raising the bar.

Yelp
Incredible food. Accommodating to my gluten free dairy free diet. Nice little spot to eat.

Yelp
I love everything about Colleen's but I mostly order their beet salad ....always friendly ...great decor and comfortable.
