On the Grid : Collinge & Clark

"Probably the most interesting second hand bookshop, ever. A big statement but to anyone interested in design, and particular typography this is an absolute gem of a place. From independent private presses to first editions of artists such as William Morris it's a great place to browse and find inspiration. Interesting(ish) fact: The Shop Front was used in the comedy series 'Black Books'." - IYA Studio

A niche second-hand specialist in independent small-press publications, particularly Typography, Calligraphy Design et al. The rare, the recherché and the the-unfamiliar. Whether a dedicated collector or endemically curious, you’re likely to find a title here that’s eminently desirable. …… “the love of books is a charming eccentricity: it is respectable, it is innocent, it proves you have an honest soul, a contented mind.” Jules Janin.

Coming from a Black Books fan - it was truly amazing to visit the place. It's different on the inside, which I already knew, although I think the show took a lot of inspiration from the original book shop. It's quite small but cosy and you can look through the books for hours and still find new and interesting tomes as well as rare copies. Which brings me to my next point - that the books are all very specialised and quite expensive, which obviously will not be for everyone. I like antique books, but an average shopper won't have the interest or money to casually buy one of the many, many unique books. Fear not, as there was a small selection of more affordable titles. Long story short, I very much enjoyed my visit and the owner was friendly and someone to have a nice conversation with. I will be sure to pop by whenever I'm in London again and who knows maybe one day I'll be able to get one of the books. 😊

A bibliophile’s dream. Excellent selection of rare small press books, strong on poetry, plus some other hidden gems. I once purchased a fabulous sheet of marbled paper from the estate of an artist. The owner warms up quickly when one engages him.

my daughter is a bookworm, and she appreciated the books out front and wanted to go inside. we didn't because we have read reviews that weren't the best. we did get our giggle on because we LOVED BLACK BOOKS. Plan on returning and buying something for sure.

I stumbled on this shop on my way to Judd Books. Incredible that I did not even know if it’s existence and I have lived in London for almost 40 years. I must have been in there for 2 hours and Oliver Clark was patient and friendly and happy to share his knowledge with me. A scholar and a gentleman. The shop is just a book lovers dream. I was like a kid in a candy shop, was late for a meeting and keen to buy something. There was no pressure at all from Oliver. Prices are very reasonable too considering the rarity and beauty of many of the books and the specialism of the shop. Bought one book on Eric Gill inscriptions and another a bibliography of private publishers. This place is everything that makes traditional book buying such a pleasure. Can’t wait to return when I have time. If you love books and print you must visit this astonishing shop.

A really beautiful collection of short release and one-off handcrafted books that the owner took the time to describe their makers to me. Lovely shop.

Do not recommend at all. Book purchased online, never received this book (but money taken) after more than two weeks of waiting. Sent 5 emails + message from online form and messaged the mobile number.... No answers.

Went in and the owner was incredibly rude to me. This is also the exterior to the Black Books bookshop. I don't think these two things are a coincidence. Five stars.
