On the Grid : Collingwood Children's Farm

"Want to take the kids somewhere? The Collingwood Children's Farm is your best bet. Cows, goats, pigs, chooks, guinea pigs – you name it, they have it. Fantastically close to the city and adjacent to the Yarra River bike trail it's pretty easy to get to. Makes for a fun day out with the family in which city kids can delight in the sound a sheep makes. There are many great opportunities like sheep feeding and guinea pig holding, as well as observing helicopter parents in their natural environment – each animal feeding opportunity containing more adults with iPhones trained on their children than the children themselves ;) There's also a really great cafe right by the entrance serving delicious sandwiches and great coffee for when you've just had a bit too much of staring at Bessie feeding on grass." - Studio Fellow

This place is a wonderful hands on country vibe sanctuary in the inner city area. There are so many animals roaming around for kids to observe and pat. The goats, chickens, guinea pigs, pigs and sheep were very popular with my daughter. The expansive vege garden is brilliant. I loved this place so much after my first visit that I bought an annual membership. An excellent activity for families or people trying to entertain little kids whilst also teaching them about the environment, animals and sustainability.

Loved the atmosphere - so close to the city yet feels like you could be miles away. A great way to connect to nature and the farm life. Would recommend this to all ages as well, not just children/ parents!

Not enough parking , crowded. No proper guidelines are provided , yet it’s a beautiful place to visit with kids . They have timings for animals to pet, better to leave early and if possible use public transport or find a secure parking on streets

Google
Best spot inner city to see farm animals, great and friendly staff interacting with the kids to feed the animals and explain how they do things.

We visited the farm after having breakfast at the convent next door, arrived around 12pm and the only activity seemed to be meeting the sheeps at 12:30. If visiting with kids especially, probably recommend arriving close to opening hours as they have several activities between 10 and 11:30 but after that it's minimal activities spread really far apart in terms of time, and because it's only a small farm with just a few animals, you're not motivated to wait around for it, especially on a hot summer day. Toddler area is actually quite nice, sheltered from the sun and rain, and we were very thankful for the powerful fan that helped with the heat. I think if we had arrived earlier it would have felt more worth it but it was basically an ok experience for us. Only paid parking available, at the convent parking next door (supports both the convent and the farm). Price guide (as of Jan 2025): Adult $17 Child (2-12 yo) $8 Student concessions $14 Parking: weekends first 90 mins $7.50 (a dollar less on weekdays), +$2 per hour after.

This is a city farm and is just a taste of a farm for city folks. Perfect for a relaxed cuppa under a shady tree on a sunny day. Perfect for kids 4 and under who live nearby. It’s not very big and there are limited animals. More suited to local families. The staff were lovely!

We visited on a weekday and found a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. The farm's café served delightful coffee, and the experience was made even more charming by the friendly animals - we enjoyed petting the chickens and goats. It's an accessible spot, with paths suitable for pram, making it perfect for a leisurely few hours. A lovely escape for families looking for a quiet day out."

Both of myself and child are having lovely time in the farm. I find that the length and flow of activities for the children are well planned as my child gets to participate in each of them without the need rushing around. The farm is small but I would say it is really just nice for those little legs and also friendly for the parent’s feet. We spent 4 hours in the farm inclusive of about 1 hour of meal time, my child is just so happy with this visit. I highly recommend this for those with young children to experience the very engaging activities and also learn a bit more from the experience and knowledgeable farmers. My apology I can’t remember the farmers’ name who were so patient with my child thank you so much! By the way the food there is also yummy and reasonable. Parents just be mindful of the birds (crows, seagulls, peacock, pigeons and some other species) that love to hanging around when you have food near the trees. Just be brave to keep them away from your child so you and your child can eat peacefully.

Yelp
A must visit when in Melbourne This kids farm is nestled in the inner suburbs just a stone's throw away from the city The animals here are so cute and approachable with sessions for feeding and interaction. Heaps of families out on a nice day being cute and that but it is a place really suitable for all ages The sheep goats and guinea pigs love being petted and the workers are happy to have a chat and talk about all things animals :) Perfect for a sunday day out. Finish your day out with a visit to lentil as anything next door !!

Yelp
It feels like a dream that a place like this exists in the middle of the city. Amazing location on the Yarra, great cafe with quality food options and a lovely farm for the kids (but not only) to roam around!

Yelp
What a great day out for big and small kids alike! Get up close with the animals, chase a chicken, pat a guinea pig and watch cows being milked just minutes from the city. There's loads of room to run around and plenty of space to spread out a picnic blanket if you're wanting to bring your own lunch. Or, take the easy way out and order food from the cafe on site. Pro tip: Bring $6 in change for parking!

Yelp
A cheap-ish way to entertain mini-me while being able to make ridiculous animal noises with little judgement from the public ;) We visited on an overcast weekday so it wasn't very busy. There are chickens, peacocks, chickens, ducks and chickens roaming the grounds (yes, there are a LOT of chickens), but it's also nice to go point at pigs, goats, horses and sheep. You can cuddle up to guinea pigs if that takes your fancy, or watch some of the other animals getting fed throughout the day for no extra cost. My mini-me is a little too young to truly appreciate it, but toddlers and above would have a ball running around. There's a café on site but we decided to pop over to the Convent for a coffee and cake hit. I love that this place exists so close to the city.

Yelp
Can you believe this place exists? It's a bloody farm in the middle of Collingwood. For a small donation ($16 for the whole family) you can walk around this giant farm and pat horses, roll around in the mud with the pigs, feed the ducks and even learn how to milk a cow. This is the perfect destination for parents and babysitters alike! You can entertain the kids all day at the Collingwood Childrens Farm. I'm 25 and was entertained all day... The first Sunday of every month is Family Day, where the kids can have free pony and tractor rides, plus there is a Farmers Market on the second Saturday of every month - which was recently voted Australia's favourite farmer market. The Collingwood Children's farm is fun for people of all ages. Be sure to check out the cafe while your there!

Yelp
After being here more times that I can recall, I have to say you need to go and check this place out! For $16 for a family you get Ducks, Chickens, Cows, Horses, Pigs, Goats, Peacocks and more! On your way in, make sure you pick up some hay for the Sheep (or you will find yourself heading back there when your little one notice that they don't have anything to feed the animals) For the adults, there is a great coffee shop and you might feel left out if you arn't walking around with a coffee! If you are just riding by on the Capital City Trail, you can access the Cafe from the trail!! Be sure to check your dates however as there is a Farmers Market on the second Saturday of each month and it can get a bit crazy. Parking is on St Heliers Street and there is a fairly big car park ($6 per day) but you will want to get in early, it can get full, or better still get on your bike and ride over!

Yelp
Attended a wedding here on the weekend. The ceremony was under a big old tree by the Yarra, followed by bubbly. More bubbly & finger food in the paddock (average, but we were hungry). However, the chefs redeemed themselves with a hearty dinner inside the barn. It wouldn't be compete without the smell of cow, but it was fantastic! Such a fun wedding!

Yelp
I love this place. A farm in the middle of the city, amazing. It is cheap, 16 dollars for a family. You get to see and touch different farm animals, help milk a cow, chase a chicken, and get some fresh air. The cafe has some nice stuff, all ingredients come from the farm but it can be pricey. I felt that having this in the middle of Melbourne was worth so much more that the 16 bucks, that I didn't mind spending the money at the cafe. You can even arrange to have a birthday party at the farm. They have a nice car park too that is cheap too. All in all worth the money and an amazing day seeing something you would expect in the country.

Yelp
The Collingwood Children's farm is the best place in Melbourne to take kids to on a sunny day. It's super cheap, and payment is on an honesty basis. The farm is on the grounds of the old Abbotsford Convent, so it's quite beautiful, between the old heritage building and the luscious natural surroundings. It's great for kids, because they're able to get up close and feed and pet several of the animals. The farm has goats, pigs, cows, horses and a whole range of bizarre looking birds. There's also quite a nice outdoor café to break at. The farm is all uncovered, so avoid it if the weather is bad, but on a sunny day, it's beautiful (and genuinely enjoyable for both adults and kids).

Yelp
Great day out with young kids. We have 3 under 5 and all had a good time checking out this little farm oasis in the middle of the city. Good coffee from the farm cafe and finished off with lunch at the Convent next door.
