In Colonial Williamsburg, Food Teaches Visitors About American History | Eater

"When I visited the Governor’s Palace kitchen in May I watched Dominek Marsh make jugged hare five times from an 18th-century recipe — butchered rabbit stewed in a sealed jug with clove-stuffed onions, shallots, herbs, spices, and red wine, cooked slowly in a water bath over the hearth — and learned the team reproduces rich, impressive 18th-century dishes for research rather than service because the kitchen fails modern health requirements; they use period tools supplied by other trades (blacksmith iron implements, coopers’ wooden tubs), grow ingredients in a period garden, and sometimes translate their work into public collaborations (beers with Williamsburg Alewerks, chocolate with Mars, bread with Anson Mills) and an official cookbook." - Nick Mancall-Bitel

What an absolute joy! The Kitchen was one of those unexpected experiences that just blew me away. Such a friendly and welcoming crew who didn’t mind our many, many questions. Beautiful prepared dishes prepared exactly the way they would have been prepared way back then. Online advanced ticket was the best deal.

A remarkable preservation of early American history. The Colonial Williamsburg Governor’s Palace is a very worthwhile stop on any visit to Williamsburg. The furnishings and art are amazing. I particularly enjoyed the kitchen tour. The staff is professional and engaged. This is was a highlight of a visit filled with highlights.

Adjacent to the Governor's Palace lies the kitchen, where meticulous attention is paid to every detail of attire, cooking utensils, and meal preparation. The dedication to authenticity truly allows one to immerse themselves in the daily life of this historical setting.

We walked around all the little out buildings, not sure if we had to be a part of a guided tour to go inside or not, so we didn't go inside.

Step back in time and check out this majestic property. The governor of the British Virginia colony. Truly a highly underappreciated gem of this nation

Yelp
You need a ticket to take the escorted tour inside the Palace. This is the only way to see what's inside. AnnMarie was our tour guide. She was knowledgeable, funny, and very nice. When we walked inside we sat in a room waiting for the tour to begin at noon. AnnMarie told us how it burned to the ground, and skeptics were not sure how to rebuild. But they found pictures of it outside and inside among papers in England and Thomas Jefferson's papers in America. This is truly a beautiful building inside and out. After l seeing the butler's pantry, the salon, the bedrooms, and the dining room, we walked the grounds before moving on to the next historical landmark.
