Sometimes I wake up and decide I want to paint. No reason behind it, sometimes, I just think of something I want to make, and I decide that I am going to make it. However, I really enjoy making functional art, things I can use when I am done. So, I really love going to Color Me Mine and making dishes for my home. A year or two ago, I discovered CMM on a long drive home from work. I found it to be a wonderful way to relax and be creative. I ended up making a whole set of various "tattoo themed" plates and mugs. Each one was an exciting project for me. I still use those plates and mugs.
This last Saturday, I woke up with an itch to make something, I want to make an entire set of Alice In Wonderland themed dishes. Dinner plates, salad plates, bowls and maybe even mugs. I will start with the dinner plates first though. Each one will have a different character featured on it. I will make a total of six. So I set off with my book of images in hand to begin working on my first plate, the White Rabbit.
I arrived around 12:30 and there were few people in the store. I quickly selected my pieces and got to work. I had been here so many times before, there was no need for instruction. However the staff there is very helpful and will explain everything to you. This specific store is my favorite, it is pretty large, has friendly staff and a good selection of paints. For those who are going here to do some really artwork, the lighting is much better in this store than the Santa Monica one and you can see much better.
I ended up spending almost 9 hours here painting (hey it takes a long time to paint everything THREE TIMES!) and the staff never made me feel bad about it. They let me bring in my lunch so that I could continue painting. Some tips when coming to this store, there is parking underneath as well as street parking, but watch out because you can only park there for two hours. There are several food selections around the area that you can try if you need to take a break. The do have special days during the week where the paint time is cheaper, and certain days when they are open until 12am. Paint time is $10 whether you are there for 20 minutes or 9 hours, so you might as well get your piece done all at one time.
If you are looking for a good way to relax and spend some time being creative, I suggest checking out Color Me Mine, as it is a great way to have fun making art AND you have something functional in the end.
