Cơm Tấm Nguyễn Văn Cừ – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - Gastro Obscura

"While Vietnamese food debates usually revolve around whose pho is best, there’s also a fair amount of polarizing discourse surrounding cơm tấm, or broken rice, as everyone feels strongly about their favorite rendition. Perhaps best described as an everyday meal of the people, this culturally significant dish is centered around its most humble ingredient, the rice. During the brutal French colonial period, a time of hunger in Vietnamese history, people began cooking with the rice that had been broken during the milling process. As such, it’s become a symbol of Vietnamese resilience and resourcefulness. This is the origin of cơm tấm, which is the namesake dish at Cơm Tấm Nguyễn Văn Cừ, a beloved institution that’s been selling it since 1968. The rendition here is traditional: a couple scoops of the broken rice along with sides of sườn nướng (marinated pork chop), bì (shredded pork skin), chả trứng (egg and meat loaf) along with pickled vegetables. Fish sauce, with or without birdseye chili, is poured over the top and adds depth of flavor. The big differentiator here is the larger-than-typical size of pork chop, which is prepared on the grill out in front of the nondescript storefront. It comes with a higher price tag (a little less than $7), of course, and while that’s earned it some detractors, it nevertheless remains packed for lunch daily with a mostly local audience. Know Before You Go Cơm tấm is more of a lunchtime food, so if you go around noon, it will be hard to grab a table. On one hand, the meat, which is the star of the dish, is best at this time since it won’t have been sitting too long on the grill. On the other, you’ll probably have to wait. If you’re in a rush, try dropping in around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m." - Dan Q Dao

We went at 9am in the morning and it was pretty quiet. They had already cooked the pork chops and had them on the side of the bbq keeping warm. It was still good but would have been even better if we were able to get them freshly made. As we were finishing up they started to get busy and cooked another batch, so I guess it’s just about timing. It is a bit more expensive than other com tam places, but the portions are big. Would recommend and will be coming back

Are you looking for a delicious com tam? If so, you should visit this local restaurant. You won't regret it! It is a dish you will love, especially if you are familiar with soy sauce. Don't forget to order an egg or two. The yolk of the egg is so fresh that it will add flavor to the dish!

AN AVERAGE COM TAM - PRICEY CHARGE. My friend and I went here during lunchtime and the place was so messy and noisy. Very pricey Cơm Tấm, I paid 406k vnd for 2 dishes cơm tấm, which looks like the photo below, and 2 iced tea. I think this place wanna say a BIG NO to the local customers because with that price you can get 5-6 portions in the other places that even have better food quality and service. Plus: you have to share the table with strangers during busy times cause of the small place. The parking lot is small too.

The food is why you are here. The atmosphere is very down to earth local. The service staff are all working to their max. A group did cut the queue but since I was there alone I did get in earlier. There was a wait for the food and the wait is worth it. 2nd time here and will come again when I do visit HCM again.

This is one of the most expensive broken rice with pork chop dish I've ever eaten in Vietnam. The broken rice wirh pork chop cost 180k (12 aud) vnd where as most place cost around 90k vnd. Cost you 10k vnd more to order extra like fried egg / small piece meat loaf etc. The pork chop is decent and that is bascially it. This place is full of tourists. I guess social media plays a big part.

com tam suong tastes good, charcoal grilled pork with traditional method marinated. However, you can find similar taste with 1/3 price of this place. Com Tam is available everywhere so do a little research. Stay away this place at all cost, they are overpriced with tiny portion. All 5 stars reviews are from tourists which they don't know the local price.

I wouldn’t pay that much for an average com tam. Meat was a bit dried because of the thickness. The seasoning didn’t get a chance to flavor the meat as well because of it. The bi(shredded pork skin) way too soggy. Fish sauce was average and couldn’t save the meal. The soup was good. I had better com tam for 1/4 of the price.

Crowded messy noisy place with a lot of smoke and smell coming from the barbecue outside. Tables are shared unless you are a group of at least 4ppl. Enough to try once because it's said to have the best broken rice and pork... Imao, nothing special here apart from the rough experience. In any case, avoid lunch hours: after 2pm it is fine.
