Katy Asian Town’s Best Restaurants | Eater Houston

"The restaurateur who operates Com Tam Saigon once owned a place on Bellaire Boulevard, but sold it a few years ago, only to set up shop in Katy Asian Town. This means those beloved plates of com tam bi cha thit nuong (broken rice with shredded pork skin, steamed egg meatloaf, and grilled pork) are the real deal. If you’re hankering for something else, the menu also offers vermicelli bowls, golden fried rice, and stir-fries as well. As a bonus, this no-frills, family-friendly place is easy on the wallet: Most standard rice plates ring in under $10." - Minh Truong

Katy Asian Town’s First Restaurant Has Arrived - Eater Houston

"Yummy Pho & Bò Né debuted over the weekend, making it the first restaurant to open its doors in the brand new Katy Asian Town development off I-10. The Vietnamese spot at 23119 Colonial Parkway (inside the H-Mart) serves up traditional standbys pho and bò né, as its name would suggest. The restaurant’s take on pho comes with a short rib floating in clear broth noodle soup. Bò né, starts with diced filet mignon, topped with an egg over easy, a slice of spam, and accompanied by a baguette with pâté on the side. Early Yelp reviewers have given the new eatery a shining endorsement. For diners who have never tried bò né, Yummy has a instructions on how to eat the dish posted on its Facebook page, alongside a mouth-watering photo of the dish. Yummy Pho & Bò Né is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday." - Alaena Hostetter

I really enjoyed their banh beo but felt like the com tam was just okay. I ordered the com tam suon heo dac biet - the pork chop seemed a little dry. Restaurant looked clean and bright / service was okay. They tended to us when needed but the workers just seemed a bit sad or unhappy 🥹

We came to Houston for the day and when I come I like to eat vn food in Houston. We stopped in Katy Asian town and tried con tam Saigon for the first time. Although we did not order com tam I did order the egg rolls and the banh xeo. The egg rolls were typical nothing special but it bit the spot. The banh xeo was huge and was crunchy the whole time, it did. It get soft even when it cooled down and it came with a generous amount of fresh greens and the nuoc mam was on point. My bf ordered the bun Bo buying which had a good marinade and a hint of lemon grass which made it taste good but the meat was a tad dry but otherwise it was pretty good.

This used to be the place to go to when they first opened for my wife and I. Then they closed shop for a month for “renovations” then they came back with all new people who claimed they were part of the same family. Their pork chop and Korean bbq sauce marinade are exactly the same. Sometimes they forget to season the pork chops. Sometimes their egg cake and other garnishes aren’t fresh. It’s not the same anymore. We haven’t been back in half a year since.

First time dining here with my family and we all really enjoyed our dishes! The textures and flavors were really good and our favorite was the egg side dish served by the slice. Also, don’t forget that every rice platter should come with a bowl of soup on the side, so don’t forget to ask for it! The spring roll appetizer was another favorite with the crunchy texture and delicious meat, nem nhuong. We will definitely be back to try out other dishes!

Google
Summary: A nice new place worth a try! It was my first time here with my family. The food we ordered was good and the portions were generous. I believe it's a great place if you're looking to get a quick bite of Vietnamese food. The service was excellent and attentive to us.

Most of us know about Vietnamese broken rice dishes. No two places are alike.. Com Tam Saigon… been to a few already. This Asian Town location boasts a clean and bright interior. R I at the humble.. quieter hospitality amidst the hustle and bustle of happy diners tucking into their meal. One family member tucked into their broken rice grilled chicken dish- Com Tam Ga Nuong. This dish tasted natural and free of flavor enhancers. The nuoc mam was authentic and full of daikon radish, carrot slivers and chilli flecks. And it smelled so good like it should as you dip the grilled meat in. Now, the usual Vietnamese beef noodles 🍜soups we ordered has quality and soothes those who are feeling just under the weather for the day. Nourishment and love in a bowl of hot soup . The tendons, tripe and eye round steak slices were very tender and fresh. The highlight of our dining experience is Bun Mam. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea. However, for the food connoisseurs and foodie adventurers who are in search of wholesome, authentic flavors of a country .. ask around .. check out and try something out of the usual. BUN MAM would be one of those at Com Tam Saigon. There’s a warm fish and shrimp base note to the broth.. gotta squeeze some lime juice which will lift the flavors of the broth and all the ingredients in this one dish.. there’s eggplant, Chinese chives, shrimp, pork slices, squid.. bean sprouts, fresh mint leaves and shredded cabbage to garnish FANTASTIC!!👍🏽😋.. tender and delicious. Recommend you check this place out.. try the hot pot.. try the rice dishes.. come and a bellyful of the noodle soup.. Will be back!!😊😊

Google
We had the com tam (broken rice) Special #1, which came with shredded pork, baked egg, grilled pork chop, grilled shrimp, fried stuffed bean curd skin, sausage, and veggies. The dish came with a small bowl of clear broth as a side and fish sauce for dripping over the main plate of food. The plating of the food was beautiful and enticing. Everything on this dish tasted great. We also had a bowl of bun bo hue noodle soup. The soup was delicious but a notch below other specialized bun bo hue restaurants around town. We would go back to try other items on their menu.

Google
I used to be a regular at Cơm Tấm Saigon. The food was always just okay—mediocre at best—but it was close by and convenient. What ultimately made me stop coming wasn’t the food, but the owner’s blatant greed. One day, I asked for extra fish sauce (nước mắm) and was shocked to see a $6 charge on my bill. SIX dollars—for fish sauce. It wasn’t even a large portion. Just a little plastic cup of something that typically comes free or at a minimal cost in any Vietnamese restaurant. When I asked about it, the owner acted like it was completely normal. Sorry, but that’s a rip-off. That moment told me everything I needed to know. They’re not about hospitality or building customer loyalty—they’re about squeezing every penny they can, even from long-time customers. I haven’t been back since, and I don’t plan to. Plenty of other Vietnamese spots in Houston serve better food and don’t nickel-and-dime their customers over condiments.

Yelp
Our first time visit, not sure what to expect with 3-star Yelp. Everything was delicious! Service was great. We came around noon on Sunday, not too busy. Below are the dishes we ordered & my rating 1. C2 broken-rice specials (Com tam dac biet) 9/10 2. CC1 beef cube fried rice (Bo Luc Lac) 8/10 3. CC2 house special fried rice 10/10 , the flavor was awesome! 4. A2 shrimp paste rolls (Chao tom cuon) 10/10 5. Clay pot caramelized catfish 10/10 ... soo good! We will definitely coming back!

Yelp
Wouldn't recommend, one of my worst com tám I've had. No flavor and lackluster quality. The meat was chewy, the rest of the toppings had no flavor. The chow mein didn't have flavor either. Wouldn't come back.

Yelp
If you are going to post a bad review for a restaurant at least put your name and own it. Not every restaurant is perfect. Even fine dining restaurants get bad reviews due to customer service, prices etc. Do not let some bad reviews deter you from dining here. We dined here last week and enjoyed some authentic Vietnamese food. The waitstaff were attentive and the food was good. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
What a great little restaurant where you can eat in or take out Viet foods. Authentic Viet with Saigon Cooking Style. We like their Bò Pía, Gỏi Cuốn and Nem Nướng Ninh Hoà cuốn. Great Pennyworth drink, Rau Má!
google avatar

Neko T.

Yelp
gotta say, place feels authentic when you walk in. ac must be set to 80 degrees. com tam itself was ordinary. i find it funny it cost $2 for an egg. will not come back here again.

Yelp
Great food. Great customer service and affordable prices. Portion is very large too. Very cleaned atmosphere. Will definitely come back

Yelp
Adding this viet restaurant into the rotation! Super fresh and soo good! I have been here when it first came to Katy Asian Town and I wasn't that impressed but now coming again recently it got a lot better! Everything we ordered- -Shrimp paste rolls -Chicken fried rice -C1: Com Tam Saigon Dac Biet -Claypot chicken with lemongrass and chili My dad got the rice plate and said it was really good! It has a little bit of everything and he finished the whole thing lol I just wanted to eat fried rice and a little bit of the claypot chicken and it was really good as well!! The fried rice was super simple but it tasted very homey. The lemongrass chicken was super tender, had good spice, and the sauce was so good just to eat on plain rice too! Now the shrimp paste rolls were the best thing we ate! I have never had this before but I will definitely be ordering this every time I come here! It was crunchy, very shrimpy, and packed with so much flavor just on its own. I also dipped it in the sauce that it comes with and added chili paste. I don't know what the sauce was but it went really well with the shrimp paste! Definitely come try this place whenever you are in Katy Asian Town! I am still dreaming about those Shrimp paste rolls!!

Yelp
I'm Vietnamese so I'm familiar with our culture foods. But I wouldn't recommend this to any Vietnamese. 1-10: 1 being worst & 10 best. - food: negative 1 - service: Zero We had to keep on asking for service since they didn't check up on us at all. Three of us ordered Banh Xeo / Vietnamese Crepe, which comes with Shrimp & Pork, but no pork at all. Also suppose to come with Rice Paper, but here it was an extra $2 charge. Also each plate gets its own veggies but they gave us one plate for all three. We asked for more peanut and fish sauce, it would of costed an extra $1.50 each. One ordered Chicken Fried Rice for the kid, surely you can't get that wrong, unless you order it here. Lastly there was a total of 6 of us, and we were charged gratuity, definitely not a true Vietnamese tradition of hard workers. Also gratuity needs to be stated on the menu, table to by the server that gratuity is being added before you order. I worked at many restaurants, and gratuity is normally set for 8 or more people.

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing! I love coming here for authentic Vietnamese food. I've had their spring roll with nem nuong and it tastes amazing! I can't wait to come back to try more food here! They have a great selection/variety on their menu and their service is great!

Yelp
Food was decent. I enjoy having a Vietnamese pho and rice restaurant nearby that is fair on food quality. Some other Vietnamese rice dish restaurants (Com Tam stores) in the Katy and Cypress area do their own take and it's definitely not original so I'm glad this one is consistent like the stores on Bellaire. Pho tastes fine, rice plates taste good with fair ingredients (I.e fish sauce used is the correct sweet fish sauce and not dipping fish sauce). I like having them around as a decent option choice.

Yelp
I could be wrong but someone told me this place have new owner ship , either way the food still is bad Got the slice grill pork rice plate and the meat have a Sour taste of it. Everything looks like it was sitting out . Now good one bit . And the girl taking order can't understand me when I'm trying to get something . It's just all bad
google avatar

Mike N.

Yelp
I decided to give this establishment a second try. I got the Nem Nuong Rolls and Combo B. Nem nuong was actually really good! However, for the rice combo. The meats tasted old (been sitting out), especially the Chao Tom.
google avatar

Vonny W.

Yelp
Very good food. The banh xau was so crunchy and full of shrimp and pork. It comes with tons of fresh Vietnamese veggies. I also got the banh boa with crushed shrimp on top. Danang style Then we had the ca kho to. Sweet with a little umami flavor and lots of tender catfish fillet. The service was great too.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you want to have a traditional Vietnamese broken rice plate. Good food, typical solid serve you'd expect
google avatar

Chelle N.

Yelp
Food lacks flavor and needs some TLC I ordered: Bun rieu: only had one rieu and no other meats. The broth did not have any depth. I kept adding mam nem and lime but it just wasn't happening. Banh beo: the banh is very thick, toppings are sad.
google avatar

Kristine N.

Yelp
Used to enjoy coming here when they first opened, but sadly, their quality has declines. The thit nướng on their rice plates tastes old, dry, and overly salty. Still, I respect and support a family owned business and have ordered other dishes many times. I had my last straw this last order though. We ordered salt and pepper calamari to take home and found that it was melted through the box once we got home. The stir fried egg noodles with sauce was also packed so loosely that it spilled out into the bag. When contacted, they said that they were sure to pack it correctly and it was probably my own fault for putting it in the trunk. They said they'd return the calamari though so there's that. Probably will not come back after this.
google avatar

Ngoc T.

Yelp
deserves 0 star rather than 1 star. When I called to order, I asked for an extra onion because I thought it was free. And what I got was a small cup of onions like this for $2. It is very expensive. I am Vietnamese and I am very knowledgeable about Vietnamese food Never come back.
google avatar

Nhi V.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the spring rolls, nem nuong roll, and bo bia here but sadly the entrees are just mediocre. The com tam is decent if you're starving and wants something cheap and filling, but there are much better options in Bellaire. However, with the price increase, I'm not sure if it's worth it anymore. The noodles soup, specifically bun mam and canh bun, are saturated with MSG. I gave in countless times and come here to eat instead of driving to Bellaire but I'm always suffering from severe dehydration after eating their noodle soups. One time, it was so bad that my throat closed up in the middle of grocery shopping right after eating here. I haven't returned since.

Yelp
Extremely slow, ordered on doordash and my delivery guy waited 30 minutes there. Can't even believe it.
google avatar

Selina W.

Yelp
First and foremost, I really enjoyed the customer service here! The lady was eager (almost to the point where it felt rushed) to grab our order. I ordered the Bun Rieu. Not a lot of Vietnamese places make this dish, and it can often come out bland, but it was it was flavorful! My brother ordered the bun noodle dish that has meat and veggies, he said the noodles had a soapy flavor to it :( We also got the A1- grilled meat spring rolls and we both thought it was really good. Overall 4 stars!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so happy there's a Vietnamese spot in Katy with a lot of diversity in the menu. Everything was absolutely delicious.

Yelp
We are an office with a big order and have been ordered here couple times already. So far everything seems good, no missed items or wrong orders. Customer service when I got there was great. Helping me carry out a big order as well. The only thing that our office would recommend are the meat. Needs to be more fresh and juicy. It's quite dry every time we ordered. The color also too much as well (noticed the same review in couple people about color of the meat). Another down side, I'm unsure if everyone there speak English well but we have a slight difficulty with communication over the phone when placing the order.
google avatar

Patricia J.

Yelp
This is a good choice if you want a quick, and casual spot to grab rice and protein. Their specialty based on the menu is the Vietnamese dish, cracked / broken rice! Although they do have soup dishes on the menu, I'd definitely recommend to stray away from those or going to a neighboring restaurant if this is what you're looking for! I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in the area, the grilled pork is worth a repeat order.

Yelp
I've been here once before but I believe it was last year or the beginning of this year. To say the least, it's been a little while since I've had the Bánh Khot and I wanted to try it again. It didn't disappoint that's for sure. It was sweet from the coconut flour but also soft and eggy on the bottom. Having all the accoutrements (lettuce, mint, cucumber, etc) is what makes all the difference and it's one of the few places that will serve the dish with its aforementioned sides. I really like them and they are very filling. The Shrimp paste spring rolls were also an interesting dish. Inside the roll is a rolled piece of fried wrapper so there's a nice crunch when you bite into them. The dipping sauce was rather interesting and different and I'm not sure if it's good or bad. It's a mix of shrimp and pork I was told but there's egg as well but I can't pinpoint anything else. It's an odd flavor and I'm not sure if it really works that well with the shrimp roll. If that sauce is traditional then I'm just not used to it. If not, I think they could serve it with Nuoc Cham and it'd be great. Service was ok but I think it was because it was just the one guy. I didn't see anyone else from the kitchen come out. He never refilled my glass but it worked out cause I was finished eating by the time I finished my water. I'll definitely come back.

Yelp
Legit tasty broken rice plate in the heart of the new Katy Asiatown district. Everything was traditionally flavorful and I highly recommend everything we had from the banh khot appetizer to the com tam saigon dac biet plate. If I had any gripe, it would be that the banh xeo had a little too much bean sprout to meat/seafood ratio for our liking, but everything else we really enjoyed.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
The food here is good, to be honest you can't really mess up com tam. However 2 stars off due to service, serving size, and the fact that we were fighting flies the whole time we were there. Although we did show up 30-40 mins before closing, we didn't plan to take long and we finished before closing time anyways while there were other tables there, so i do understand the servers frustration, however, he was not pleasant at all. Com tam should be served with a side bowl of soup and we didn't even bother asking him about it because he was rude every time we asked him about anything. For the price, i feel like we should've gotten a little more food. I believe each plate was about $14. Overall, i would come back here during the day and see if service is different and to see if they've done something about the fly situation.

Jenny H.

Yelp
We ordered two rice plates with grilled chicken and the other one with grilled pork. Let me tell you something. The veggies are fresh and tasty but the meat,...omg the driest and tasteless meat ever! I don't know if you can see it in the picture. The meat is very orange. Too much food coloring jeeZz
google avatar

Mystri D.

Yelp
Over priced mediocre food. Service is poor, don't expect them to come around to refill or check up on your table. The busboy responds better, in fact they drop off Some of the food and then clean tables-my tip was handed to him. Won't be back.

An B.

Yelp
I can be a snob when it comes to Vietnamese food, so I was pleasantly surprised at the amazing meal that we had! We ordered a variety of dishes to eat family style. The caramelized catfish cooked in a clay pot (ca kho to) was absolutely delicious, hitting all the right notes when it came to being both sweet and salty. It was paired perfectly with the white rice and water spinach stir fried with garlic (rau moung xao toi). We also got the sweet and sour soup with catfish (canh chua ca bong lau), which came in a large pot over a single burner(?) that kept the soup boiling as you slowly savored the sour liquid and accompanying ingredients (including bean sprouts and bac ha). Friendly tip: try drenching your rice with the broth and slurping it down. Thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes that we got and highly recommend going here for legit Viet food!
google avatar

Lysa N.

Yelp
I placed a Togo order for two com tam plates and ended up with a fish dish. Contacted the store and the lady told me to bring back the order and that I didn't specify what I ordered before paying, which was incorrect. The lady asked me what I ordered and that's how she charged me. She had the nerves to tell me that it's too busy, I can't get a refund and that I can get a replacement order the next time without asking me any of my information.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
where to start.. The Nem Nuong Goi Cuon was pretty good and the sauce had decent flavor. No complaints there. The Pho Tai was a huge bowl. Lots of noodles, but the Tai meat was cut pretty thick. Broth was okay, similar to the flavor you'd find on Bellaire. I didn't try the Banh Xeo but Esposo devoured it so I'm assuming it was satisfying. The shrimps and pork meat were a good size. I had the Com Tam Dac Biet #2 (I think, the one with thit nuong) Not too shabby. The egg cake was meh, though...So that was a little disappointing. The meat was flavorful but also a thicker cut and I didn't have a knife. Everything else in the plate was good. Service was...okay. I don't think our server wanted to be working that night. ‍ All in all, I'd go back to try the banh khot and Banh beo, maybe the mi xao.

Khang N.

Yelp
I dont really know how they done my food like this. I ordered 2 grill beef rib rices and it only rice and eggs. WHERE MY MEAT AT????? They charge me $28 for 2 orders and it not worth like that.
google avatar

Vanesa V.

Yelp
Good Viet food in Katy Chinatown. We had the banh khot, broken rice with chicken, banh xeo and combination stir fried noddles. The veggies they served with the banh xeo and banh khot were really fresh and clean. All the dishes we got were good. Similar to Viet food you would find in Chinatown.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
**PSA** I'm not sure how the management is, but I'm positive that this is the same owner as Com Tam Thanh Kieu in China town bellaire!! Quality is amazing and the menu items are the same, with a few tiny exceptions! This menu is authentic as it is for the amazing quality! Highly recommend, especially those who want to try a variety of authentic Vietnamese food!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Their banh xeo is freaking delicious - so crispy and I like the hint of coconut flavor in their batter, different from other banh xeo I've had, or maybe I just need to broaden my banh xeo horizons. My husband tried their bun mam which was okay, though not bad considering this is a com tam place. I got their combo com tam which was decent, but they didn't devein their shrimp so that was a little off putting.
google avatar

Mi P.

Yelp
Food was ok ,the porkchop is smaller than on the menu. One thing really disappointed they did not let me split the bill, the cashier said it needs to be more than $15.... I guess my check was 80 cents less?! And what kind of policy is this? I work in restaurant industry my whole life never heard of anything like this... ridiculous!

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Terrible service. Unfriendly, server did not bring food in timely manner, hair was in our food, and they did get anything right in our order. Not to mention the food was not very good. And we were the only people in the restaurant. As a black man, war veteran, and fellow business owner, I found this place to be horribly run, especially after voicing my concerns with service patiently, the manager/owner was argumentative and condescending. We will not be returning and strongly discourage anyone from patronizing.
google avatar

Nathan N.

Yelp
Ever accidentally eaten some chalk? Well this is what it tastes like. Dry, tasteless, no seasoning. All the meats have artificial coloring and just liquid smoke. They literally don't taste like anything. How are people rating this so high??? Have you not had Pho Saigon? This can't even compare to how good Pho Saigon is. We had the Bo Nuong, Suon Nuong, Ga Nuong and Bo Dai Han. They all "tasted" the same. Just char and liquid smoke. If you want some good rice combos, look elsewhere cause this place ain't it. To end, why must there be color added to the meats? That doesn't make sense to me.
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
Service was great, very attentive. We had banh khot for our appetizer. He had the C2 com tam combo (he said it was ok) I had bun mam and I enjoyed it. Our intention was to try Phat Eatery but they had a long wait.
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
Vietnamese cuisine in Katy is much cleaner than Bellaire. Food is great and authentic, reminds me of home. The only complaint I have, BIG DISCLAIMER, they use A LOT of MSG. I'm allergic and I know plenty of people that are. A little bit won't give me side effects, but after eating here I know there is a lot in each dish. I felt very lightheaded, numb in my arms, and overall horrible. This is my experience after eating here. If you are not allergic to MSG, I recommend trying this place out because food taste superb!
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
This place is a gem and definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Houston. You should definitely get the chargrilled ground pork rolls (A1) and the catfish clay pot (MK2). You won't regret it. The rolls have such a nice, unexpected bite to it that goes wonderfully w the sauce. As for the catfish clay pot, heavenly, enough said. Runner-up would be the salt and pepper calamari (MX2). Chefs kiss*

Yelp
Great Vietnamese food! One of our go to spots for good quality Vietnamese food around the Katy area. I bought from them many times (like 50) and they never disappointed me. Keep it up, thanks!
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
I came here after a trip to hmart for a quick bite, but seems like they were low staff. Yes, they were social distancing, but there was about 3 tables at the restaurant and plenty of tables and seats for us, but a 20-25 min wait. Instead, I got the combination rice plate to go. 15 minutes later I picked it back up and ate in my car. I will say, that it's lacking. Meats were tough and dry, the rice wasn't as fluffy as standard com tam places, there was only 3 small veggies in my plate. Fish sauce was good. I thought staff could've done better in explaining why there was such a long wait for 2 people when there was only 3 tables at the restaurant seated. I also think that there needs to be someone who will actually supervise the cooks for consistency. Overall, not great, but place and menu are clean and organized. Sad because it's the only com tam place near me. Guess I gotta go to the Vietnamese restaurants a few miles further
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way back to Austin! We got: catfish, bun rieu, ban xeo, salt and pepper squid - would recommend all of it and sharing everything family style :)
google avatar

Tina N.

Yelp
So excited to see a vietnamese restaurant open up in Katy that isn't just serving pho. I ordered Bun Mam and banh beo. Both hit the spot. They have the Pennyworth drink that i love. It's so hard to find in Katy. I also ordered sugarcane drink to-go. Definitely give it a try.
google avatar

Michee K.

Yelp
Been to this places several times but never experience good customer service here. We gave this business too many chances but seems like they do not want their customers at all! Never say thank you or you're welcome to customers. Never ask what we need. The attitude of the employees are terrible, they only focus on serving the big family and ignore small tables. The prices have been increased, but the quality and the customer service have been decreased. Very disappointed!
google avatar

Henry D.

Yelp
I think they have a new owner. Food doesn't taste good anymore. Bad service. Forced me buy more food to get more fish sauce. Disappointed and never come back

Amey N.

Yelp
I wish I took the time to take a picture of my food before I dug in. But it looked too good (and tasted even better) to help myself! Large portions for reasonable price, as well as, excellent service that deserves to be raves about!
google avatar

Yelp
First of all they have a 15$ minimum. I'm sure some credit card companies would like to know that their customers can't use their cards as they please. When you call to place an order the lady answering would rather not take a customer and make exception and give up the sale.
