My friend and I visited Comfort Café because I originally saw them featured on Ksat12's "Texas Eats." I was excited to try it because my friend wanted to treat me to brunch for my birthday. I had already studied this place because I knew they were by donations only and a minimum of $15 per meal was suggested. Perfectly fine with me. As we approached the restaurant, the entry way is rather tight space but once we got to the host to add our name to the waitlist, you can see the restaurant was packed. We came on a Sunday after church. We added our name to the waitlist for 2, and he told us it would be a 20-30 min wait. He also told us they only take "Cash Only" for they had the signs posted. They have an ATM machine upstairs as you wait that charges a $3 service fee. Come prepared with cash if you visit here.
As we went upstairs to wait, a friendly guy greeted us and told us how pretty we looked today. That was so sweet of him, and we thanked him. (Remember that guy in this story for I'll revisit him in a minute). We waited for maybe 20 minutes then our table was ready. The same guy who complimented us escorted us to our table. I hate I forgot our waitress's name (She was maybe a middle age, Caucasian, woman with dirty brown hair) She greeted us and asked for our drink orders. The exchange started out subtle, for we were still checking out the menu. Then when it was time to order, the waitress's energy got weird and awkward. As I was giving my order, she suggested I order something similar to my needs. It was cool until my friend ordered the same thing I wanted, and it was like the waitress couldn't hear her say she wanted the mixed berry waffles. My friend also asked her about the potatoes and if she could get them fresh and crispy. The waitress said "well they're made out of the bag and not fresh" insinuating the food we get is pre-made. It was her tone as if we were a bother for asking her specific questions to our liking for our food. So, once my friend finished ordering. We waited for about 15 mins. A couple next to us sat down at the table and they received what looked like our waffles. My friend noticed it and said to me "those are our waffles!" So, when Karen the waitress came back, we mentioned if those were mistakenly given to them for those look like our waffles? She had a funky attitude and said, "Those are complementary waffles for our guest" and then walked away. First of all, y'all are a donation-based restaurant. How are y'all giving complimentary waffles out to folks especially ones that just sat down at the table?
My friend called the manager immediately. What do you know, the guy that was so nice who complimented us and was accommodating to us when we walked in, was the manager named Chris. He was all ears as he listened to our grievances on how we were being talked to by the waitress. He said it was unacceptable and that they don't run their business like that, and he was apologetic on her behave. He left quickly to help a customer, but he swiftly came back to explain to us how sorry he was for her tone and that those waffles were NOT complimentary waffles. They mistakenly sat them at the wrong table, and she didn't have the guts to just tell us that. She walked over to us to try and clean up her lie, but the damage was done. I don't want to believe she was treating us that way because we were black women but sometimes it's hard especially when she had a tone with us like we were peasants.
All in all, if Chris the manager is there, report any issues you have to him for he was nice to us. However, the waitress made my friend and I's appetite go away. I couldn't even finish my food. My friend didn't even want to take it home. I told Chris i would still make a review for I'm big on customer service. I totally understand there are people who work here that are in a recovery program, but we didn't deserve that just because you're struggling in life for we could have connected with her. Instead, she was just rude to us. Chris knows her name for i forgot it.
I don't think I'll come back here again. The waffle was too thick, the fruit was good, but the sausages and potatoes were disgusting. No seasoning or taste. The establishment itself and its purpose is beautiful but the service is definitely hit or miss which is unfortunately when you can make a better breakfast at home.
