"The Proofing Room is a speakeasy-style basement bar from the people behind one of our favourite drinking spots, The Vault. You can now get a bunch of their cocktails delivered in batch, including a coconut butter old fashioned, their big highball, and a tequila and habanero fizz. Princes start at a tenner and if you happen to live within a three-mile radius of Commercial Street, same-day delivery is free." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing

Great pub's pub for drinks. Lovely interior and character. Good background choice of music, too. Only five minutes walk from Spitalfields market.

I was treated to a truly unique experience. Ordered a pint of IPA and, in an impressive display of foresight, the female bartender handed me a pint that had apparently been poured well before I even walked in. Talk about efficiency! To top it off, she and her colleague shared a good laugh as they served it, clearly enjoying their work. A masterclass in hospitality—just not the kind you’d hope for.

Top service and drinks. Nate made us some killer old fashioned cocktails. Great vibes lovely evenings 💖

Gorgeous interior and atmosphere both upstairs and down. Hired out the upstairs space for an event and had a great experience. The staff were friendly and helpful both on the night and during the organisation. Would definitely recommend if looking for a private space to host an event in London :)

Recently hired the room upstairs for a function and would highly recommend. Bright and spacious wrap around room , private bar and ability to play your own music. David and Seb kept us going all night with fantastic service behind the bar. We also pre ordered a bunch of pizza which went down very well !

What a boozer. The staff are friendly and the beer tastes like it's been milked from the teet of the goddess of divine pints. I'm definitely coming back

This is our favourite pub. The staff are friendly, music is awesome, drinks spot on, everything is clean. The atmosphere transports you to a historic east end icon. A mixture of Charles Dickens, shabby chic and artistic flare, what more could you ask for. Everybody is welcome. Thanks to all the staff!

I went out last Friday and had a brilliant night. The atmosphere was fantastic, the music was great, and the service was definitely top-notch. I have to thank Seb he was so friendly, full of energy, definitely what you need in a lively bar like this one. I'm definitely coming back here and would love to be served by Seb again he really went above and beyond superb service 👌

Yelp
Drinks: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 4/5 Decor & Style: 5/5 This is one of my favorite night life places in London! This whole pub looks like an old wealthy victorian house turned into a pub! Not only does it looks really "cool", but it probably has the best tasting pizza in London! Lol, what are the chances? The bartender was super efficient and friendly as well. It was easy to get a table and drink/eat all night long! Of all the places to see in London I would come back here again next time I visit.

Yelp
This place looks like another divey Sillverlake (LA) bar. From the mish mosh of wall decorations that ranged from old Intwerview magazine covers, Popeye and floral wallpaper you would find at your grandmother's house, to old lampshades, mirrors, and chandeliers on the ceilings. At first, I was just going to have a glass of wine, but I figured, why not have one of their specialty gin and tonics while I'm on holiday. My Juniper gun and tonic was generous in size, and was pretty mild in flavor. Our bartender, Borat's twin was pretty nice. Service was chill. This place was quirky, charming, the drinks are OK + decently priced, wouldn't mind stopping by again the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Great pizza, great drinks, great atmosphere, great bartenders. Will def be back!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Surprisingly decent and cheap pizza in a chill pub atmosphere. Popped by here this afternoon and was impressed with the relaxed vibe and eclectic interior design. I ordered the courgette pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, rocket and goat's cheese. I was pleasantly surprised at how much rocket and courgette was on the pizza and how good the sauce was. The sourdough base is not as chewy as I would like but for pub pizza it's a good value.

Yelp
The most charming feature of this pub is its decorative playfulness. It is a mixture of art-deco and kitsch, perhaps reminiscent of the Rococo era. There are beautiful tiles lining the walls, collections of flowered tea-cups and kettles, themed wallpaper, and other random yet fun items around. The upstairs holds a separate bar and a massive chandelier on top of a large dining table. It shows that any old pub can be freshened up with a bit of creativity. There is no long beer pump bar here which is perhaps a good thing since it doesn't seem to attract the after-work drinkers as much. They do serve some other more obscure beers and a standard collection of spirits. I also believe they make cocktails, although I have still not had one. In the summer they add some wooden picnic tables for a bit of outdoor seating.

Yelp
The Commercial Tavern had reached nearly mythical proportions to my friend. Nearly 2 years ago she met me in Shoreditch raving about a huge 2 story bar with wide windows and an outdoor section that she passed on her way. Despite living in the area I couldn't think of anything close to what she described... Until last night when we walked past Commercial Tavern and she went crazy. With decor looking a bit like a Victoria Boudoir gone Crazy Mad Hatter it's one of the more unique places to grab a drink! We arrived late on a Wednesday and snagged one of the tables next to the windows upstairs, mood lighting and all, surrounded by couples! I've seen the crowds spilling out onto the streets on a weekend when the sun's out, will definitely be adding the Tavern to my list of locals.

Derry N.

Yelp
The best thing about this refurbished old Shoreditch pub is the decor in the interior. It's a beautifully laid out artful affair, with just the right amount of tables surrounding a central curved bar. Lots of space to move and breathe without that restrictive, crowded feeling one can get in a typical old boozer, which this once was. The upstairs is even better. Sit by one of the window tables and gaze out across Commercial Road and down to Spitalfields. Its best on a long and warm summer evening, with a cocktail in hand and some friends in tow. A laid-back and thankfully un-self-concious addition to this part of town.

Qype User (inspir…)

Yelp
What a lovely place for an old friend's reunion, he'd been travelling across Europe freelance writing and selected this prime Shoreditch spot as the meeting place to convene, share anecdotes about Moldovan cuisine and examine bizarre 500 billion notes in foreign currencies. I was rather amused when I had to order a Black Sheep and Rosey Nosey from the bar, otherwise known as a complex, rich tasting beer with plenty of roast malt character and generous hop flavour. One of my favourite places to have a tipple, play some pool and dump heavy bags after window shopping at the nearby All Saints.

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
20 minutes waiting at the bar for a drink - granted it was Friday at 8pm - for them to then tell us the card machine wasn't working and we had to queue downstairs! Fair enough, some times that does happen but we had been waiting 20 minutes for the waitress to serve only 1 person, making 2 cocktails. She was so so slow. Appalling! Saying that there is a nice atmosphere and it is a quirky place with jazzy decor. Well located as well.

John C.

Yelp
This bar has a killer image going for them. The staff was extremely friendly, and attentive, The vibe was funky, and the decor was unique and refreshing. It had the feeling of hipster/grandma chic. I will definitely come back to this spot when I hit London again.

Yelp
This place is really damn cool. Between the kitschy granny wallpaper, deer antlers, antique mirrors on the ceiling and quite the collection of chandeliers - I was ready to go to third base with The Commercial Tavern the minute I walked in. They have a £10 minimum for paying with a credit/debit card, which is OK, as they let you buy multiple rounds at once, and then give you a note on your receipt to take to the bar when you're ready for your next drinks. As I visited here on a bustling Saturday night with the queue at the bar being about 4 people deep, I was thrilled to be served quickly, and by a very friendly staff. Amazing that a busy venue actually had enough staff members working the bar! What a concept! There are 2 reasons The Commercial Tavern gets only 3 stars. 1) There was only 1 stall in the ladies toilet that had toilet paper. Luckily, drunk women are happy to hand toilet paper under the door. (HYGENIC!) 2) Despite numerous people taking photos all night, when the lights came on at 11pm, a member of staff went and told my husband to stop taking photos of our friends, as they're afraid people will "copy their decor". Oh PLEASE. As if they're the only place that has old lady wallpaper or deer antlers. Overall, this place is a really fun venue for drinks with friends if you're planning on getting a bit drunk. There's just a few niggly things that make it less than perfect. (Also, I'm picky.)

Corinna H.

Yelp
The Commercial Tavern is a fun, quirky place to come and enjoy a drink and a catch up with friends. I first went because I couldn't resist the bohemian looking parasols at the tables outside with little gold disks and tassels hanging from them. Inside is just as fun, with pillars pasted with ephemera, twinkly chandeliers and elaborate imitation Rococo mirrors hanging by the bar. It's very eccentric, and it puts you in a mood that's as fun and whimsical as their interior. The charming atmosphere is a little oasis from all the shopping a girl just has to do in this area. I've had a few interesting chats with the owner whose traveling tales and exuberant outlook on life can never fail to give us a smile. It's small and cosy and great for a bit of a frolic before heading out for a dance to carry on the good mood that you will inevitably be in after you visit. Just a note, they don't serve food it's only drinking time in here:)

Craig M.

Yelp
I wish the Commercial Tavern was open longer at the weekends! It's quite a conundrum you're faced with. Either you ignore your instincts in wanting to stay in the Commercial for a little while longer (and why wouldn't you) to head off to your next location early to avoid the queues, or you stay until it closes and then stand outside in the cold at the next bar. And you know that as soon as a queue forms in Shoreditch/Hoxton that the door staff will immediately turn into egotistical twats. So it's a real dilemma for me. Because I really like the Commercial Tavern. I'm a fan of their beer on tap. I like the staff. I like the ridiculous décor. I like the location. All this means I usually end up staying way longer than I should and then have to deal with the aforementioned twatty door police elsewhere! Can't you just stay open all night?! Damn you Commercial Tavern! (Love you really).

Arabella G.

Yelp
The Commercial Tavern is a rare Shoreditch find: an aesthetically pleasing pub that actually serves cocktails. And this place isn't just well-presented, its interior is downright nuts in a fabulously eccentric kind of way. I've been to the Commercial Tavern for parties - not such a good idea as it gets so busy that temporary paralysis is most definitely assured - and for the occasional quiet drink and it never disappoints. The cocktail menu is great for what is ostensibly an upmarket and ever so idiosyncratic pub, with the apple martinis being particularly good. Hands down one of the best pubs in this neck of the woods. If you haven't been to The Commercial Tavern yet, go.

Linzi M.

Yelp
I'm a little confused, I could swear I reviewed this place... am I reviewing in my sleep now? Wevs, I LOVED IT. Sure, it was a sunny day and we were in exuberant spirits but I was still delighted to see how wonderfully it's decorated inside. I imagine this is what the inside of my head looks like, all colourful tiles, chandeliers and crazy wallpaper. They have the coolest cider too, with sexy pin up ladies on the bottle. Really I am just a frivolous child who likes kitschy fun decor. But I did order a grown up drink too, the Honey Bee and it was lovely. I'd definitely come back in the evening to see how the vibe changes.

Chieh T.

Yelp
Kitsch, cute, and warm. First time I came was on a first date -- upon entering, I knew the guy was going to be a cool dude. It's got a very interesting ambience, with a lot of antique/vintage/animal decor lining the walls, chandeliers, and oh, a cuckoo clock. The area upstairs is really nice, there's a big dining area which you can rent out, or just chill when it's not being rented out. Mixed drinks are fairly priced, bout £6 or so. Selection of beer and ciders are also good. You get a fairly mixed crowd. I work just around Liverpool station, and I hate going to City bars full of bankers and other professionals, so this spot is cool since it's got its share of regular folks going for a drink after work, shoreditch locals, and random people meandering from/to brick lane.

Liz E.

Yelp
OMG this place is adorable! I love love love the decor. I can't really explain how its cute, you just have to check out all the details of the place...buttons on the wall, cool light fixtures..etc. Its much better for a chill lets hang out and talk time than woo lets get rowdy. Also its kind of small, so not good for a big group.

Conan H.

Yelp
There were two things I noticed walking in on a Friday night: 1) Eye candy interior, with floral tiled bar counter. 2) Eye candy. Its not a pub full of bald fat suits. Hard to give a thorough review on just having a pint but the selection seemed good and the service friendly (once you get it). Will definitely keep it in mind for next time.

Pierre K.

Yelp
Big fan of this little gem! The ambiance and atmosphere is very welcoming and laid back. There is no pretension which I love. The decor is one of a kind... From the wallpapers, to the chandeliers it is all very well put together. Best way to put it is that it is kitsch. Whether with friends or on a date, this place will for sure do the occasion justice.

Laura C.

Yelp
Words I would use to describe the commercial tavern: pretty girly vintage relaxed date venue It looks like a regular pub from the outside. But inside its a pleasure todrink in. We visited in the afternoon on a weekend, an it was busy but not rammed. Lots of couples and groups of girls...It was beautifully sunny and all the light flooded in upstairs. Cocktails were not amazing and the list not extensive, the beers and wines seemed fine. I didn't check the prices, but I don't think it was extortionate. Would defiitley go back, I'd imagine it gets super busy at night though.

Andrew M.

Yelp
4.5 stars, rounding up to 5. Commercial tavern is a great boozer, dark downstairs, bright upstairs with amazing windows, light fixtures, and ambiance. The place does, to some extent, defy description; I want to say it's the Paradise (of Kensal Green) of East London, but much smaller and an earlier crowd. The place has style -- it's perhaps a bit feminine and ever so slightly kitschy-other-century, but it works. Also, it's across the street from Hawksmoor, so quality late night food is nearby.

Thomas A.

Yelp
It's like seeing someone you like on the train every morning for 4 years and never saying hello, but I finally got a message in my inbox saying 'want to go to Commercial Tavern?' Actually, yes I do. It's en route for anywhere I'd go around Shoreditch really and yet it's always been a familiar stranger to me. So I've finally gone in and it's a good one! Nice space upstairs, bit unexpected in a relaxing and sweet way. They've got Stoli Raspberry which is my tipple of choice in the summer and doubles are reasonable so hey-ho, I'm a fan. Check it out if you're in for something not too ridiculous but still unique around Spitalfields.

Laura Y.

Yelp
The Commercial Tavern definitely gets my vote. It really is a fabulous place and I love it. Indeed, it is occupied mostly by the trendy Shoreditch/Hoxton skinny jeans wearing clan but the atmosphere is great. Ideally situated between the nightlife of Shoreditch's funky Curtain Road and the happening Brick Lane, this place is a great little haunt and the perfect escape away from all the usual mainstream places that were cool a couple of years ago. This is the new found place where all the cool kids go. It also has a fantastic cocktail menu meaning that if supping ale all evening isn't your thing, you will be just fine sipping a cosmo whilst shooting some pool.

Kim N.

Yelp
I would go here again the pizza was pretty good and the place is quite and nice. If you want a place to hangout and want to hear each other than this place is for you

Glen S.

Yelp
I've found myself here a lot lately, and I can't really say why. It's not unpleasant - the decor is actually quite fantastic - but something about it feels a bit too put together, a bit too from a movie. I can just imagine the production designer's orders: you know, something sleek, urban, trendy, eclectic. I don't suppose it's Commercial Tavern's fault, and I know I'm just being fussy. It's a perfectly good watering hole, a step up from a standard pub and thus appropriate for a date, if that's your sort of thing. Thankfully the people who frequent it are not sent from Central Casting and are rather a more interesting cross-section of Brick Lane hipsters, Shoreditch tourists, and people who just happened to feel like a drink near Liverpool Station.

Ezara A.

Yelp
One of my favourite pubs in London, most suited to the early evening drinks. The decor never stops fascinating me here. I love the mish mash of the bar area, complete with walls of polaroids and The Face Magazine covers as wallpaper, aswell as the beautiful tiled bar. Downstairs is always very dark, which I quite like. Upstairs is airy and bright and my favourite part. Sitting there when the light is right on a sunny Sunday afternoon, well I don't think there is anywhere I would rather be. The staff are fun and friendly and the crowd always seems easy going. The only downside is they close on Mondays and I always seem to forget this!

Qype User (Sian…)

Yelp
Oh dear! I'm so shocked by the last review that I felt compelled to write my own! I love this pub. It looks like something in Alice in Wonderland. It's like a little cave of childishness and that's fun. The wallpaper has aeroplanes on it. It has a perfect little seating area outside and in summer there's a great vibe about the place. You'll find yourself chatting to some really nice and pretty cool people. I've only ever been here for the early part of the evening and I'm inclined to agree that it might not be as fun if it's too packed. But I do love it here. It's my favourite pub in Shoreditch and I'm happy whenever I come here. The staff can be a bit grumpy, but I get so excited by the decor and pretty things in here that I'm usually paying too much attention to that to notice.

Qype User (leasim…)

Yelp
Hoorah for this gorgeous tavern of loveliness. So what if it's full of Hoxditch types with their ironic sunglasses and 'just-pooped-in-my-skinny-jeans' look - trendoids are people too y'know. Nestled between the nightlife of Shoreditch's slightly predictable Curtain Road and the delicous but probably filthy garlicness of Brick Lane, this place is a great little haunt. I like drinking buckets of ale here and sucking at pool. Wayhay.

amanda g.

Yelp
very, very cool. super great decor. awesome atmosphere. nice crowd. good service. two drinking thumbs up.

Qype User (rashbr…)

Yelp
Shoreditch has many bars and pubs and a penchant for night time interiors which seem to work throughout the day as well. Commercial Tavern is a case in point and has an imposing Victorian facade close to the Shoreditch traffic lights in Commercial Street. The outsdie has traces of purple and lilac and as one walks in its -er - dark. Of course, thats the point, with candles, chandeliers and swirly lighting paraphernalia creating a shadowy Edie Sedgwick meets Sweeney Todd atmosphere. Helena would feel most at home. There's some real ales on the board too; Speckledy Hen was my choice of beverage, served in a 'southerners' pint mug with a handle. Less common nowadays in the era of designer lagers from the bottle. Despite the outside's aspect, the interior can feel a little cramped, but I suppose thats part of the image. People are here as a staging post before moving on to another venue for the next part of the evening. There's more room to settle upstairs, but I guess you have to decide whether to stick or twist. In our case, we were heading for Brick Lane and stumbled from night-time back into early evening light.

Qype User (Doirea…)

Yelp
I really like this place. From the outside, it just looks like your garden variety trendy-ish after work pub. Well, in a sense it is. But it's just a little cooler really. I think it's mainly the decor. It's just fantastic. They've got all this sort of strange wallpaper - like what you'd find in kid's bedrooms in the 1980's and lots of kitsch ornaments on the walls made out of household objects. Just a bit different really. It tends to get crowded on Thurs, Fri and Sat evenings, but there's a couple of floors to filter out the crowd. Cosy corners to sit. Although, to get to the bog, you have to brave passing the somewhat danegrous happenings of the pool table. They serve beer too.

Steve P.

Yelp
Amazing venue with a great interior full of funky decorations. Probably one of the best pub in the area because of that, and their fun picnic bench type seating upstairs. Two floors, great music and great environment

Zoe K.

Yelp
Stunning yet quirky interior decoration, eccentric music selections, stylish owners that hang out at the end of the bar and filthy cheap booze make this bar simply marvelous. I don't really need to say much more... just go there and enjoy.

Raneta V.

Yelp
this place has a good look. i swing by for a drink and end up having several. the next thing you know the kooky owner lady joins in at your table and shortly after kicks you out because the pub closes at something stupid like 11pm. i tend to bring out of towners here mainly because of the decor. the seating upstairs by the windows is ideal for summer nights. check out the hypnotizing lighting fixture above the dining table. its craaaaayyyzaayyyyy.

Robert C.

Yelp
What a find! Wandered in after exploring Shoreditch and Brick Lane. Interior was amazing...old mirrors on the ceiling, puzzle pieces above the fireplace, the framed crushed bmx bike. Great place to take in the decor and enjoy a pint.

Steve B.

Yelp
What an evening. We had a good time, the bar staff were friendly, the beer was good and the toilets were clean (!). All was well until the landlord came to collect our empties: "Can I take these?" My friend: "Yes, help yourself." "Don't you dare talk to me like that..." ...and so it began. The landlord (we confirmed this with the bar staff) launched into a tirade of personal abuse. We insisted he had misunderstood, but he wasn't interested. "We don't want your sort round here..."; "F*ck off you fat c*unt..." He even removed a friend's glasses as a threat! You get the picture. Other drinkers around us were as baffled as we were. A real shame: it's a nice place, but I certainly won't be going back, in fact: I'd love it if a truck ran through the front window and crushed the stupid sod!!! BEST AVOIDED!!!

May K.

Yelp
Something about this place was really depressing. It smelled like a swimming pool, and was sort of moist. It's not like a ton of sweaty people were in there either. Actually, there was available seating all over it. The interior was sort of weird... it looked nice, but it almost looked like the walls were made of cardboard. The downstairs is depressingly dark and the upstairs was more like a tea room. Maybe it's because I went when the light was still out (around 3 in the afternoon). Drinks were alright, but even for the middle of the day, the music was about as loud as you'd imagine it would be at night. Meh.

Jenny W.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite bar/pubs. Decorations are unbeatable and keep you entertained for hours. Staff is always friendly, drink selection is great (Old Rosy's cider on tap!), and siting outside in the summer is the best! Only complaints are that the music can be really loud and drinks are a slightly pricey.

Bree W.

Yelp
Great vibe in here! Fun, quirky decor throughout! Tends to get quite busy but try to snag a spot on the benches outside (in the sun) or upstairs at one of the mismatched tables.

Qype User (izagui…)

Yelp
commercial tavern is a fairly big pub in two floors in commercial street, close the old street side of it. the decor is daring and shocking with whites all over the place. behind the bar, pints and cocktails are all yours in this sound place. there is some magic in this bar, but when is so packed that puts you off. a good option is fight for a table and leave the time go by. the only problem is that they don't do pints upstairs. commercial tavern is a good option for a swift one when hanging around spitafields or planning to go old street at night. it gets busy on saturdays and spoil the feeling, so try to turn up in another occasion

John S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere is pretty easy to come by in London, and the Commercial upon first inspection seems to do it right. The downstairs is nice and the upstairs is kind of beautiful. Friendly staff and seemingly nice patrons also work in its advantage. Good tunes that skipped and hiccuped every once in awhile lent a nice organic playlist feel.

Melanie H.

Yelp
Stumbled across this pub and so glad we did! The quirky decor makes for a really cool and cosy atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It's quite pricey compared to other similar pubs in town but it's a nice place to drink.

Qype User (fuerte…)

Yelp
I really love the weird fairy tale/ Marie Antionette/ romantical decor in here, it's super pretty. I could sit and look at the walls and light fittings all day. Apart from that this perpetually busy pub is lovely to have a good catch up with friends in. People usually congregate on the pavement outside so the upstairs is usually pretty empty to settle down in. Last but least pretty much every time I've been here they've been playing Disney tunes, which unless i was hallucinating each time, is a win.

Qype User (Hampst…)

Yelp
Great pub in the heart of the Shoreditch area. The tunes in here are great you might here something new and indie or you might here something really off the wall. The decor here is great as well a bit of quirkiness in design. The staff here are very attentive and quick. Great place for meeting up with a few friends but can be a bit too much when a large group walks in. Not full of city types, more the artsy, fun type. They have a few tables outside for the few sunny days we get.

Qype User (JujWal…)

Yelp
This is a really funky little place. The decor is what makes it - old fashioned wallpaper and funny collections of plates, light shades, chandeliers etc. There are two levels, with lots of cosy corners to huddle up in, plus a few tables outside for a warm evening. Great location as well, right near Brick Lane. Well worth a look.

Qype User (duncan…)

Yelp
Great pub halfway between Liverpool Street station and Brick Lane. The decor really makes it stand out. Blue sky-effect walls, glitsy chandeliers and funky sofas inside, plenty of space to stand on the street if you're a smoker. Painfully trendy patrons though.

Qype User (Squill…)

Yelp
Love the bicycles (or is it modern art disappearing up it's own orifice but double ironically with a splash of Hoxton cooler-than-thou Nathan Barley-esque-ness?) behind the bar, the porn table upstairs and the various little DIY artlet installations, nice subdued atmosphere with friendly staff and better than average selection of booze. A little oasis of pseudo-strangeness. Can never get a seat though, which proves that it really is as cool as it is (?)

Daniel L.

Yelp
Stopped here for a few beers, Saturday evening. The decor is funky; I love the lamp shade chandelier. A decent selection of draft and bottles is available. However, I'm not a fan of semi-cold beer. The place was full of fashionable, young Hoxton locals sipping beer listening to old rock. I had a great time just people-watching.

Qype User (aindri…)

Yelp
What caught my attention here was the decor. It's quite ecclectic. Definitely a convenient place to hang out for a couple of drinks post work. But be wary of the bartenders. The women behind the bar aren't definitely the best bartenders I've seen and some of them are surprisingly quite rude. But if you're with friends, having a good time, don't pay too much attention to that!
