The Best Local Drive-Thru Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"Local bakery Common Bond opened a drive-thru window in the middle of 2020, and the concept proved so successful that there are several scattered throughout Houston. Coined Common Bond On-The-Go, the outposts allow guests to score coffee and breakfast pastries, plus lunch sandwiches and salads, and colorful patisserie, all from the convenience of their cars." - Brittany Britto Garley

This location is pretty convenient for a quick drive through option that does also have indoor seating. The staff are anyways helpful, the place is always clean. Pastries are anyways a hit. The iced coffee could be a hit or miss being a bit watered down. I would be lying if I didn't say I was devastated when they rolled out flavors for the frozen bond because the drink became instant liquid with no frozen to speak of after that. They used to make it with the coffee added so it was frozen blended heaven, but now that there are flavors they just use the frozen base, then add hot coffee to it which melts the "frozen" away making it a basic cold coffee. 😢😢 - Food options are pretty good, just not the cheapest option out there.

Google
This location always runs out of things early in the morning, which doesn’t make sense considering the type of food they sell. Most recently, they were out of candied bacon (again) at 9:10am. I ordered the regular bacon instead, only to get home and discover that it was completely burnt and inedible. The cream cheese and scallion biscuits were undercooked with raw dough inside. I also had to throw those away. This location is under poor management, so I do not plan to revisit until they have improved.

Google
Exceptional service, Brigitte knows my order by heart and has it ready for me the second I get to the window. Kind and attentive employees, great pastries, and great coffee. This Common Bond has a homier and more welcoming vibe than most sit-down coffee shops—which is impressive considering it's a drive-thru!

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Out of all the Common Bond locations I’ve been to (and trust me, I’m a Common Bond crackhead 😂), Anthony is hands-down the best employee I’ve ever met. Every time I come in, he greets me with the biggest smile and the most positive attitude — it's like instant good vibes. He’s genuinely sweet, always gets my order right, and even remembers my name (which is rare these days!). We even have nicknames for each other — if you see this Ant, it’s Meme! 🫶🏽 Coming here just to see him makes my whole day. Y’all better hold on to him because he’s a gem 💎

I have frequented the garden oaks location several times. My last two visits were not good. Each time associates fail to put my food in a to go bag. I shouldn’t have to ask for that to be completed especially when I am not dining in. Also they don’t seem very friendly. I will not come back to this location. Hire ppl that actually have common sense and want to work.

Google
Bad customer service. Waited 15 minutes for one singular croissant in the drive thru. The girl didn't even say "wait a few minutes" just handed me my drink, showed me the screen that asks for a tip 🙄, closed the window when I declined the tip (because tipping culture is out of control. Why are we tipping at drive thrus?) then made me wait. I thought they forgot about me. The cook finally came out and handed me my overcooked croissant and closed the window. No "sorry for the wait." Nothing. First and last time visiting.

Google
Each time I visit this location I receive great service. All employees are nice and very welcoming. My orders are always ready without me having to wait long periods of time. I definitely recommend this location.

Google
Awful service and they were out of several menu items. We ordered a chai latte because that was the most comparable tea to English breakfast when they said they couldn’t make a London Fog. When I tried to order a cortado they said they couldn’t do that either, but they could make a flat white. I also ordered a butter croissant and there was no offer to warm it up. There is bar seating facing the window and only one table to seat a party of four. There is more seating outside, but with rain or too much sun this isn’t ideal. There is also very few parking spots. This is truly an on-the-go location where drive-thru is best. The employees seem mad to be there or service anyone in general. I thought all Common Bonds were the same, but I’ll return to my fave location in Montrose.

Yelp
I always come here for breakfast but get the ham and cheese. It's really good for something so simple. They always make my nitro order to my liking (I'm a bit specific) and the young ladies are always so sweet even thoughearly in the morning, unlike other places I've gone to. They don't mind correcting small mistakes. One of the few places I don't mind tipping!

Yelp
The food was not good - Sausage, egg, and cheese croissant was mid at best no flavor or seasoning Ordered the hot honey biscuits and the biscuits were absolute rocks! when I asked the host for softer biscuits, She replied they are all hard like that. A biscuit shouldn't break like a cookie :/ annoyed to spend 24$ on a subpar breakfast Definitely wouldn't be back

Yelp
Terrible employees who can't properly cook bacon instead burning it to a crisp. They put milk instead of cream in your coffee when you're lactose intolerant. They don't secure lid of coffee and fill it to brim so it spills all over yourself. Even the phone number to this location is connected to a persons cell phone so basically there's no way to reach a manager or supervisor. This place is a lawsuit waiting to happen.....

Yelp
Coffee, drive thru, and scones?! YES PLEASE! Location: shepherd, corner making it convenient for coffee pick up. Staff: always friendly and patient Price: average Drink: lavender latte is my fave, I always order hot as it comforts me and lavender relaxes me. Eat: scones: healthy nut will always be my favorite, I usually ask to get it warm as it gives it more comfort and dipped in coffee just pure yummm.

Yelp
Decent coffee. Skip the food other than croissants and bakery items. The workers don't really seem to care about the food since it takes actual work outside of sticking something in the microwave. Got a caesar salad wrap, it's just chicken and 3 pieces of lettuce. Ridiculous and a waste of money. The lunch time employees sucked, I liked this place but this was a waste of 18 dollars and might not come back again bc of this.

Yelp
I remember when this place was some type of car maintenance place. If you look closely at the drive through, you can still see it. So leaning into that, and turning it into a CB was a nice little Easter egg. Can't complain about the coffee, a little overpriced, but that is the area. I would not be a hurry to eat their lunch menu, all prepackaged stuff. BUT I do want to buy a loaf of bread, it always looks good on the shelf.
google avatar

Suz W.

Yelp
I enjoy this location. They are no cash, cards only. You can order ahead for pick up via the Toast Tab app. You can dine in or use the drive through. Both options for your pick up if you ordered in advance. I like their coffee drinks. Not as varied in choices as national chains but it's good coffee and not half sugar. Sorry no huge "trifecta" or whatever size available, sorry. ;) Oh! And their bread! It's fantastic! So are the croissants, and they're huge! They'll slice your loaf on request. The staff has always been great too - they'll help you get what you want.

Yelp
Shoutout to Eden Thank you for being so nice!!! Great ambiance. I only went in for an ice tea but I'm sure their food is delicious.

Yelp
Ordered several things for an office goodbye party. Out of seven items three were wrong. Pretty awful performance and no restitution or problem solving on their end.

Yelp
I love Common Bond. I bought some blueberry muffins and they were very disappointing. Literally only 2 blueberries in it. I called this On-The-Go Common Bond Garden Oaks location, where the blueberry muffins were bought at. I spoke with Taylor, the supervisor, and he was super kind, helpful, and apologetic. He replaced my blueberry muffins and offered me a coffee for the inconvenience. Wow! The blueberry muffins I received were incredibly delicious, loaded with blueberries, topped with those tasty sugar crystals. The coffee was also out of this world! Highly recommend Common Bond and TAYLOR. Thank you for going above and beyond!!! I only want to go to this location from now on. Btw, get the Kouign Amann. You'll thank me later.

Yelp
I chose the chicken salad croissant on a staff member's recommendation. It's prepackaged and refrigerated behind the counter. The croissant is not too dry from being in the refrigerator. The chicken salad is tasty and very mushy like tuna salad. The romaine lettuce and cheese add an extra touch to the sandwich. I was a little leery of the ham and cheese due to past photos. It's pretty tasty and wrapped with paper and placed in a paper bag. The baguette is more like a grocery store version and less of a bakery version as it's plump, more dense than fluffy and not very crispy. The ham slices weren't too thick, a little sweet and salty and just enough in ratio to the bread. The Gruyère slices aren't too thin. The Dijon butter doesn't stand out as an ingredient. I was able to walk in one day, then the next day, only the drive-thru was available per Management. There's a large patio facing the road and plenty of parking behind the building. The staff was nice. After ordering in the "garage", turn left and wait at the black window for payment and pickup.

Yelp
First of all, Taylor is the tits. Sometimes I don't feel like talking to humans but I have no hesitation popping over to CoBo bc I know Tay is going to be a welcoming, smiling and considerate soul. Plus, 8/10 times, the coffee is perfection. I say "8" because the matchas as of late have been wanting...a bit shakey to say the least. And still we return. Tl;Dr: Tay makes this place feel like the Cheers of Garden Oaks but for coffee.

Yelp
Love y'all are here in GO. Small drive way but worth the convenience of not having to go fight the Heights traffic.

Yelp
Two days in a row I have come for the delicious Frozen Bond coffee-A treat in this heat. I've tried the chicken salad sandwich and a ham and Gruyère and the bread they have is amazing-Soft and chewy not hard as a rock. I appreciate the fresh selections of pastries and juices and options for kiddos that are in the garbage french fries. Staff has been extremely friendly. Support Local!
google avatar

Yelp
Two stars for the amazing staff, but none for the food. Got snack boxes for the kids (1 cracker ham and cheese and one PBJ) and a chicken salad sandwich for myself and nothing tasted fresh. My kids didn't want either box, and I ended up tossing my sandwich as well. Too much money to spend for low quality food. I would not visit this to-go location again, will definitely stick to the regular dine-in store front.
google avatar

Ronnie H.

Yelp
-1 star for walking in and seeing the ship the macaroons in and don't make them in house, and the bakery items are a little expensive. -1 star for being a drive thru breakfast place and not offering free treats for your 4 legged friend or even a simple whipped cream cup -1 star for false advertising. As seen in the photos the sandwich they post looks absolutely beautiful but what you yet is a hockey puck on some bread. +1 star because the food tasted pretty good but not mind blowing +1 star for quick service (but from the puck I clearly understand why)

Yelp
This is my second review. This place is a disaster. I ordered 6 packs of the rolls 3 days ago. I show up to pick up and do not have my order. No bread period. And the girl proceeds to tell me she can do refund my money because something is wrong with their system. She called the manager who never said the word SORRY and just told me that they don't have it they have lots of issues. And I said did you see my order 3 days ago and she said no. And proceed to yell at me did you hear what I just said????? Long story short no bread and no money back yet. This place is horrid. I don't think the owner cares. Never ever again. This place stinks.

Lona R.

Yelp
This quickly became my FAVORITE coffee shop when I moved to Houston. I tried a couple other locations but I'm partial to this one!! The manager and all her staff are incredibly friendly and bubbly, but not over the top.. just a nice greeting any time of day. I'm moving out of state and I'll miss my visits to Common Bond, you were a bright spot in the city. Great coffee - butter croissants - Club sandwiches...everything I tried really :)

Morgan C.

Yelp
Good coffee, every common bond I go to the drive through person either gets the order wrong or it takes way too long to re-explain the simple latte I want
google avatar

J. Antonio H.

Yelp
Igo to bakery in Garden Oaks. The drive thy is so convent the bakery great always fresh, always good. I have not tried the cafe. I go there not to leave my car. A first choice quality bakery and convince. Apple Pay touch free payments
google avatar

Juvie C.

Yelp
Three stars from the jump just because I love Common Bond period. However, this location is particularly disappointing. We were so excited to have one so close to us, but every time we go it is closed, closing, drive-thru is closed, or selection is slim to none. We have given up on this location and instead drive to the Heights full cafe location.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
The common bond "on-the go" is a different animal than the brasserie. I was hoping for better and cleaner based on my experiences at the brasserie.
google avatar

Patricia Z.

Yelp
3 stars for friendly and fast service. Staff admitting they messed up on not ordering particular bread which I honestly didn't understand and felt sorry about because she seemed so truly in despair about it. I ordered a salad so this didn't matter too much because I was trying not to order a sandwich. For those who remember what the first common bond was like - you will not be happy with the baked goods from this place. It is indeed overpriced because the baked goods aren't as fresh as I would want them to be. It's a bit too much for just ok stuff. They do make a good oat milk latte however.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
So glad Common Bond finally opened in Garden Oaks/Oak Forest a year or so ago!! Their hazelnut latte is the best in town and my kids love getting a macaron treat. I had such a delightful experience this morning that I had to write a review. They even gave my dog a free, freshly baked treat!! Thanks for being my favorite neighborhood spot :)
google avatar

Cinthia W.

Yelp
I love me some Common Bond! Happy to have one in my neighborhood. Quick and easy drive thru. Appreciate all of the options. Staff is always friendly.
google avatar

Jane T.

Yelp
I love it that Common Bond has a presence in my old neighborhood, Garden Oaks. I've stopped by two or three times and I've always been pretty happy with what I've gotten. Today I got the Texas club sandwich and I was really disappointed that the lettuce was wilted, the tomatoes seem slimy, the bacon was limp and certainly not crisp, not fresh. So I'm wondering, do they make the sandwiches in the shop? Because mine seemed old. I know the larger shops have more variety, but this is the only one I've been to. I also got a chicken salad sandwich, which was good but could've used more chicken salad, I like their recipe for chicken salad. The London fog was good and the almond croissant was also very good.
google avatar

Ronni M.

Yelp
The reason for my rating three star is not the food but the service. The young lady who served me/took my order seemed very disinterested in answering my questions and was borderline rude in answering the ones that she did. She was a very pretty light skinned African-American and appeared to be training a new young man. I visited this location on Monday, September 26 at around 1:15 PM. As for the sandwich, it was a generous size and decent. I had the turkey bacon Swiss on a croissant. Honestly, I would not go out of my way to go here again.

Petrika M.

Yelp
I have to say that the employees at the Common Bond Garden Oaks are the best . I always look forward to going and getting my coffee everyday. I have been to a few other Common Bond locations and was not happy with the employees.
google avatar

Alexandria C.

Yelp
Taylor not only puts a smile on my face and a giggle in soul , he also makes the best batches of Frozen Bond Coffee drinks. Let me tell you something, if there's such a thing as Frozen Craft Coffee this is it ! THANK YOU TAYLOR. Other frozen coffees are too sweet. Yours are just rite !
google avatar

Madeline C.

Yelp
Another good trip! Great coffees and breakfast. Bites were the perfect meal for my 1 year old. Nutella croissant was good, but cold which I didn't expect.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped here on my way home to grab some coffee. The service was quick and the staff was very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Taylor is always such a pleasure when stopping in on my way to work in the mornings. Always in such a great mood. Makes my mornings. The bacon egg & cheese croissant is always delicious. Stop in and try it!!
google avatar

R. P.

Yelp
The crew is super sweet at this location but the drive thru in the morning is SOOO slow. Does not matter if you are first in line and that's only if they open the garage door on time. Once you're in the drive you are stuck so all you can do is sit. The treats are yummy but pricey so I feel like the service should be more consistent. Today at least four of the items I wanted to order they were out of......been in line for over 10 minutes and I am still not at the window. Ugh......
google avatar

Lia A.

Yelp
Great food, and fast service. I do recommend trying the chicken salad sandwich. It will fill you up. I was honestly expecting your typical cold chicken sandwich that barely has any flavor but let me tell youuuuu, this is BOMB.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Great space to be in. I love where I can work and drink good coffee and feel good energy

sheri s.

Yelp
Coffee is good but pastries are sooo bad. Just got the pumpkin croissant and its hard and dry with gross vanilla extract in ut
google avatar

AJ G.

Yelp
Ordered online one Saturday morning. Grabbed a few chocolate croissants, ham and cheese sandwiches, and macarons. Very easy process. Took about 30 minutes for the pickup to be packaged. Staff was friendly. Very busy shop in the morning.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
Best coffee on the planet. The service you ask? The service was spectacular. This lady named Christina seemed to be a great manager and appeared to mentor her staff. Amazing, simply the best. Thanks, Christina and staff. We'll be back.

Christopher B.

Yelp
Great food, horrible service. I absolutely LOVE the full service location in the Heights but the On The Go spots unfortunately fall short. Here are a few of the issues I've had in the last 2 months: can't hear the drive thru worker through the speaker, boxes piled up in the drive thru line so you can't drive thru, wrong orders (twice), not having the best selling Nutella croissant upon opening (twice), REALLY slow service (compared to Starbucks across the street) and routinely not opening on time. It's a shame too because the location is good and the food/coffee is great. The service just falls woefully short. If you're looking for a quick coffee (and more) on your way to work, skip this place and go to Starbucks instead.

Mel P.

Yelp
Should have read the reviews before trying this place. I have to agree the management is horrible. This location will not last long as neighbors share their experiences on the localFacebook site as I plan to do. Decided to give it a try and ordered a bacon and egg croissant. When I got to work I opened the bag to find three little smashed egg bites...no croissant sandwich. I called to let them know and they already knew about the mistake. They said I could either come back for the sandwich or they would refund my order...only needed the last 4 digits of my card. I opted for my refund since I was already at work. Four days later and still no refund on my account. I stopped by to let them know and I thought I'll give them another try. The young girl working said she would ask the manager about the refund. Next thing I know, there is a long voice saying "she will have to wait until later, I don't have time right now, and she'll have to show her receipt!". I explained they didn't give me a receipt and the young girl was unsure what to suggest. I asked her to have the manager call me....four hours later still no call.

Audrey M.

Yelp
The people working are always so sweet here, especially Christina and the young man with heavy highlights that often works the drive through. They're fast, and it's a great way to get your week's bread without risking the lines at the main stores.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries. Love the location right in the neighborhood. Sandwiches leave something to be desired though. I wanted the salmon on rye and they were out of it at 11am. So I got the ham and cheese. When I got home and ate it there were lots of full chunks of butter all over the bread. It didn't make sense unless they were supposed to heat it up and forgot to? Nothing like biting into chunks of butter on ham and cheese... not good at all. Will definitely be back for coffee and desserts!
google avatar

Chaun R.

Yelp
Food is good. I love all the pastries. I have tried most of them. The service is good and the lattes are fabulous especially with a little caramel. I go at least once a week.8
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Tried the breakfast bun, macaroons and chocolate croissant. All were great, but the breakfast bun and lavender macaroon were our favorite!

Mattie L.

Yelp
Christina and the team are the best! As a customer who frequents the drive thru every single weekday, I've never waited over 5 minutes. Starbucks could never. The coffee is out of this world but the people are the real stars!

Julian R.

Yelp
As per usual, the foods and beverages are amazing. Particularly I'm a constant at this location because of their friendly and welcoming staff team. This team goes beyond to ensure you feel welcomed and enjoy your service experience just as much as the delicious bites.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Love coming here for their Frozen Bond when I have a break. Very efficient, I'm in and out of the drive thru in under 5 minutes TOPS. Super friendly manager and staff always brighten my day!

Ashley T.

Yelp
Love common bond but the service is horribly slow. It took over 20 minutes to get a coffee in the drive thru line. The line was not horribly long either so I did not anticipate it to be so bad. After waiting over 20 minutes I got to the window and my coffee still was not ready and I had to wait. I will not be coming back to this location.

Julia A.

Yelp
So many yummy treats and the service is outstanding!!! I have visited several times and will be back! Many thanks to the wonderful staff who really go the extra mile to make sure your food and drinks are just how you like them. Definitely go for the oatmeal cream pie - so good!

Nicholas H.

Yelp
This is our go to on the weekends for fast, friendly service and straightforward tasty baked goods!
