Disgraced Chef Mario Batali Teases a Comeback on Instagram | Eater

"A Michigan bakery the chef invested in earlier in the year; the owners sought a liquor license and indicated plans to leverage the partnership with a series of events intended to raise money for hunger-relief charities, though those events have not yet materialized." - Amy McCarthy

New York Restaurateur Mario Batali Is Listed as an Owner of a Bakery in Michigan - Eater NY

"Mario Batali is returning to the industry he walked away from a half-decade ago, after allegations of sexual misconduct led him to divest from the Eataly empire and the Manhattan restaurant group he founded with restaurateurs Joe and Lidia Bastianich. In a liquor license application filed this month, Batali is listed as an applicant for Common Good Bakery, a two-location business located in Traverse City, Michigan. Jason Gollan, who founded the bakery with his wife Linda Gollan, confirmed Batali’s involvement, referring to the chef as “an owner, a minority investor, a neighbor, and a friend.”" - Luke Fortney

A Must-Visit Bakery Common Good Bakery is an absolute gem. Their pastries are phenomenal—flaky, buttery, and full of flavor. You can taste the care in every bite. But the real star? The Cheddar bread! Crusty outside, soft inside, and packed with rich, sharp cheddar. It’s seriously addictive. Friendly staff, cozy vibes, and consistently top-notch baked goods make this place a must-visit. I always leave with a smile—and a full bag!

Google
We were looking for a quick cup of coffee but couldn't resist the gorgeous pastries! We had two and bought two more to take with us. They were amazing. The coffee was great, too. The girls working were friendly and efficient. Great find!

Google
Pretty expensive but totally worth it. The sourdough all have labels with the fermentation time and percentage of grain. We are still going strong on our loaf from 4 days ago and it’s still fresh tasting and has not dried out.

Amanda Burger

Google
We came here for the first time and were completely blown away by how amazing everything tasted! We ordered 4 different panini sandwiches to try, and Joshua delivered! These sandwiches really hit the spot! We also purchased a variety of different pastries and cookies. We will be back for sure!

Google
Awesome local bakery! Their croissants are to die for. Highly recommend the pear almond danish and croissant ham and cheese sandwich. Lots of loaves to buy and great coffee/espresso drinks. Fav part was the incredibly kind staff!

Google
Lovely pastries that are worth every calorie. You'll want to visit every day you can. Really delightful flavors. My favorite is the lemon-blueberry danish.

Google
Excellent pastries and bread! Gem of a baked goods bakery. We bought an excellent cherry chocolate Danish, regular croissant and Cheddar Boule, all of which were excellent!

Yelp
What a gem! We had such a great experience at Common Good Bakery in Traverse City! We tried a mocha, americano, a Hamowich, and a breakfast sandwich, and everything was fantastic. The coffee was amazing perfectly brewed, smooth, and flavorful. The sandwiches? Absolutely delicious! The Hamowich was perfectly balanced, and the breakfast sandwich was hearty and satisfying, with fresh ingredients that really hit the spot. The best part, though? The staff. Super friendly and welcoming, they made the experience even better. And the ambiance was adorable; cozy, charming, and just the right vibe for a relaxed breakfast or coffee stop. Highly recommend this place if you're in Traverse City. Definitely a 5-star experience all around! Will be back for sure!

Yelp
High quality baked goods, decent coffee, doing good for the community is enough to earn my business. Service is fast and kinda sorta friendly, the shop smells delicious and the display case invites you to sample alllllll their wares. You can purchase swag too (t-shirts, hoodies, beanies, and a tiny canvas bag ) as well as not caffeinated beverages. Support small businesses and especially ones that give back.

Yelp
My friend and I were warmly greeted upon entering. I had the chocolate-filled almond croissant. It was a little harder than expected, as I could not cut it with a butter knife, but the flakes did fall off when eaten. My friend enjoyed his pastry and Caffè Americano. They have a nice assortment of breads and pastries, albeit on the pricy side. They have flat-top tables, are very clean, and provide excellent service. Small lot parking. Their support of Food Rescue and Tart Trails earned them five stars. I would recommend them.

Yelp
Loved finding this little gem in downtown TC. I had the sweet cinnamon latte and it was absolutely perfect, I paired it with a sea salt peanut butter cookie. Staff was super friendly and everything looked so good.

Richard T.

Yelp
We had a lovely meal here. Everything looked and tasted delicious. Soup was amazing too. Would highly recommend and wish we were here longer to go back.

Yelp
I ordered a turkey panini carry out and the total was $21. You'd think it would be huge at that price, but it was average sized bread and was about 1/2" thick, so there's that. What really got to me though was the rude attitude the owner gave me over the phone when I politely asked about it the price. I asked to speak with him when I picked up my sandwich. I began by apologizing for "hitting a nerve" but that there was no reason for his rudeness. He continued to be really rude and launched into this tirade about how he chooses to pay his employees health insurance etc. and how he can't help his personality and on and on. I kept my cool, but honestly this man was a complete A-hole to me for no reason. What a jerk! Sandwich was very average btw.

Ligia H.

Yelp
Very expensive for mediocre baked goods. They say they overprice to pay their employees a livable wage of 17 dollars an hour but it's really so the owner can go on lavish vacations and buy expensive cars. Sad. Very disappointed in this place that I was looking forward to trying. The sandwich had one small slice of ham and they charge 18 dollars plus tip for it. It's simply not worth the money.

Yelp
It's a pretty small store with only a few stool seats next to the window. It seems like most people are getting things to go. They have a beautiful presentation of danish pastries, both sweet and savory. Their danish croissant is excellent for sure. The staff is very friendly too.

Yelp
The bakery and bread are delicious but if you have a choice I would go elsewhere. Owner is angry, rude and unpleasant. I felt like my family wasn't welcome and was bothering him with our business. Next time I'm going elsewhere.

Yelp
My friends and I kicked off our early morning here. Our food came out quick, and the bakery is a cozy spot to hang out will you eat and wait for your coffee. You can watch them bake bread in wood fire ovens and see their staff working in the kitchens. We went overboard when we saw the pastry display and had no regrets. The cookies were my favorite, they were chewy and soft. The breakfast sandwiches were very tasty as well. Locals were lining up for fresh baked bread and coffee. Our experience was pricey but delicious!

Yelp
Every time I visit Traverse City I make sure that Common Good is on my itinerary for at least one of the mornings I'm visiting. I have never had a "less than wonderful" baked item here and the staff is so sweet and extremely friendly. My favorite items are the tiles, although you do need to show up a bit early to get your hands on these because they sell out just about every morning. The spicy breakfast sando is so delicious and I highly recommend subbing the normal bread for a croissant. I'm so happy to see that they expanded to multiple locations so they can share their love of baking with more patrons. I can't wait to return on my next trip to Traverse City. Yelp
An interesting kind of place, we were looking for fresh pastries for breakfast and a cup of coffee. We picked it out because it was not too far away and had good ratings. When you walk in the place, you definitely have the smell of fresh breads, we ordered different pastries, and a cup of coffee. The coffee comes in a takeout cup that they hand you then you have to fix it with your own cream sugar and so forth at their coffee bar. You sit down and they bring your pastry to you in a few minutes. You have to be careful with your coffee because each cup is $3.50, no refills. They brought our pastries to us and they were delicious fresh baked, gooey wonderful pastries.

Yelp
A must stop when we're in town from Northern California. Terrific bread, pastries, quiche, and more!

A C.

Yelp
They use quality ingredients for their food and bakery options. Hours of operation is good as well
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious pastries and cookies. We also enjoy their cake pops and breads. Their prices are very affordable and the quality is superior to any large chain. Happy to support this small local business!

Yelp
What a find. The croissant veggie breakfast sandwich was amazing. The cappuccino was excellent and the cherry cheese Danish was to die for. Forget everywhere else and come here for amazing French pastries.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
The place was packed both days I stopped in. The selection of treats and options for our vegan friend was amazing. Everything was so good. Would absolutely try again
google avatar

Aminah K.

Yelp
I always stop here when in the area! My favorite is the vegetarian breakfast sandwich which is on the most delicious foccacia bread. The croissants are so flaky and delicious. The fig jam and pistachio danish is a must try! It is mostly a to go spot but they do have few counter seats. We ordered online to go and everything was packaged perfectly. The service was friendly.
google avatar

Luke H.

Yelp
Don't let the exterior strip mall give deter you! This is one good spot! We came for breakfast and will again. They have a counter if you are there to eat, but it's mostly a take-away establishment. The array of pastries and breads is overwhelming at 6am but we did our best to get a sampling. We had a croissant sandwich and a chorizo Panini with a chocolate/almond croissant for our sweet treat. I dipped it in an oat latte. Can recommend all of those items with one caveat. The almond/chocolate croissant was super sweet and I'd probably elect for something else next time. The inside was cute and comfortable. There was a little patio too. The staff working there was excited and helpful made some good suggestions and had lots to offer.
google avatar

Sabra Chicki D.

Yelp
The pastry is unbelievable. Close your eyes and you'd think you were somewhere in Europe. The lattes and cappuccinos are excellent as well. I want to try the wood fired pizza!
google avatar

Ruby D.

Yelp
Common Good's quiche is incredibly tasty. But, it is the smallest piece of quiche ever! For $12, the piece should be more than 3 bites. And this isn't a once off. We regularly order 2 pieces of quiche and they are tiny. You can dress it up with greens to hide it, but it's still tinier than reasonable.
google avatar

Lucy G.

Yelp
4 stars just because of the curbside service. I understand people are still "afraid" to open up their businesses for in dining options but why can't we just order inside and take our food to go? If it was raining I don't think I would of waiting in the cold rain for someone to come out and take my order, then wait for more for them to bring your order...all that aside the croissants were good, very flaky and they didn't skip on the filling. $15 for 3 almond croissants not bad. Would recommend the place, just go when it's nice out, they have a couple of tables outside but again at 8:30am and 47 degrees not pleasant to sit out and eat.
google avatar

Bernadette B.

Yelp
Wow. If you're in Traverse City, without a doubt, you should make a stop here. Due to COVID precautions, all available bakery items were placed in the window along with a way to order the items online. I never needed to pull out my phone since a masked employee popped out of the store ready to take my order. She was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The pastries were amazing. Honestly, they were so delicious and didn't feel heavy at all. I especially loved the peanut butter chocolate pastry. I'm always a sucker for that combination, and they hit it out of the park for me. We came for a lighter breakfast but also tried a breakfast sandwich. Another winner! Everything about it from the bread to the eggs to the bacon was just cooked absolutely right. I wish I had ordered one for myself instead of stealing a bite from someone else. These are the kinds of places that a community can really embrace and protect for years to come. I'm happy to bring them my business whenever I'm in the area.

Yelp
Stopped by Common Good Bakery on a whim before heading out of town. Couldn't have been more pleased. Just wished we'd discovered the bakery earlier on in our trip. The variety of breads and pastries will take your breath away. I got the Morning Bun, which was a bit crunchy on the cinnamon sugar outside and tender on the inside. My husband got a Chocolate Croissant. Both were delicious and went well with coffee. The bakery offers a variety of beautiful artisan bread making it difficult to choose. We bought a loaf of Sesame French Peasant bread, which makes incredible toast. This bakery will definitely be a regular stop on our trips to Traverse City. Residents of TC, consider yourselves lucky.

Yelp
Eeeeeeeeee. This bakery brings me all the joy. It's a carby wonderland of loaves, baguettes, pastries and bars, and the only hard part is trying to narrow down what to get! On my most recent visit I went for the grapefruit pastry, because lemon is all over the bakery scene but grapefruit?! It was, of course, buttery and sweet and perfect, with a perfect slice of actual grapefruit for good measure. At this point I may have tried all the loaf varieties, and I'd be hard pressed to recommend one over another. Everything is perfect. A testament to how much I love this basketry AND how cool it is: the T-shirt in their window display says "the butter in me acknowledges the butter in you" and depicts two croissants high fiving. I now own this tshirt.

Yelp
Dropped in for some baked goods based off of Yelp reviews. The workers were all very friendly and helpful. They had a counter full of baked goods and a nice selection. We liked everything we picked up (chocolate chip cookie, salted caramel something (can't recall the name), a chorizo ricotta and red pepper tile, croissant and a fig and pistachio pasty. The texture of the pistachio pastry, croissant, tile and salted caramel pastry all had a great buttery flavor with a flaky goodness. I'm so glad we looked it up as it would have been hard to spot from the road (in the corner of a strip mall). If I'm back in TC, I'll be sure to drop by!

Yelp
The barista made our stop extra worth it! Not only did she help us make great choices when we had a little analysis paralysis faced with so many delicious possibilities, she also gave us some invaluable local tips for things to do since my son broke his elbow snowboarding! Chill environment, really enjoyable place to sit and sip a capuchino and snack on a mouthwatering pastry or breakfast sandwich. We took a boule home, and the bread was also great!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed a stop at Common Good Bakery on a quick stop to Traverse City recently. The pasties were awesome. The danishes were great, but especially the fig and honey. My breakfast sandwich with spicy chorizo was fantastic as well.
google avatar

Yelp
It's our amazing neighborhood bakery! They are so nice and the bread and pastries are incredible!

Yelp
I waited too long to find this bakery, but happy to know about it now! Sooo good. I've heard a new location will be opening soon? Tell me it's true : )

Yelp
This bakery is amazing! After reading a bunch of yelp reviews I knew we had to stop here when we came to Traverse City a few weeks ago. Glad we did. We came here and ordered a bunch of pastries & goodies to take to our hotel for the weekend and munch on. Everything was delicious! And of course we ordered egg ham and cheese croissants warm to eat in the car of the bakery parking lot. Had to enjoy those fresh. So yummy! Will definitely come back when we are in town again!

Tristan H.

Yelp
Cold brew was just ok. Quite pricy for what you get honestly. Bread and bakery items looked great but didn't purchase any so maybe next time
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
A Traverse City local recommended Common Good Bakery as making "the best croissant in America." I wouldn't go that far, but it is worth a visit. Located in a small strip mall, Common Good Bakery is pick-up only during the pandemic. Order online or outside their shop and in a few minutes, your pastries will be ready. For $5 each, my family got two chocolate croissants and an almond croissant. All were tasty, but the dough and texture was a little off. (We went on a rainy day and weather can affect pastries.) Despite that, it was worth the visit!

A H.

Yelp
Stopped in to get lunch--but couldn't resist getting other stuff too! I got the chicken basil pesto sandwich--delicious!!!!!! Grilled and warm with crispy bread, chicken and melted cheese with pesto... very satisfying sandwich. I also got the almond chocolate croissant, which has some sort of a creamy filling along with the chocolate. I brought home rolls for supper, also fabulous (lovely crunchy crust with a cloud inside) and a chocolate croissant which was large and beautiful and I didn't get to try. Definitely saved in my favorites for next time in Traverse City!

Yelp
:: discreetly shaking crumbs out of my bra:: I love laminated pastries. They're easy to mess up, and hard to get right. This is why a single pastry can range between $4 to $8. When I find a skillfully made croissant or pain au chocolat it transports me straight to the kind of food bliss that forces me to close my eyes so I can taste in higher definition. Sort of like when I'm driving in weather and turn off the radio so I can see better. Common Good does a riff on a Kouign Amann called a "Salted Brittany." They are my hands down my favorite pastry. Crazy good. My husband knows romance isn't a dozen roses. Real romance is a bag of these just for me. Laminated pastries are labor intensive. They have humble, but high quality ingredients... flour, butter, sugar, salt, and yeast. Careful control of time, temperature, structure, and consideration of humidity and water hardness is required. It's the sort of thing you apprentice to learn. Like a master sushi chef. It takes years. Masters have been doing it for decades. ***Somebody is rocking out at Common Good Bakery. That somebody is crafting consistently beautiful, perfect, blissful laminated pastries.*** Thank you.
google avatar

Dion T.

Yelp
The danishes (cheese, raspberry-lemon) were great, the peanut butter cookies were excellent, and my family enjoyed the peanut butter tart, croissants, and mochas. We'll definitely return, it's a must-visit for our future vacations.
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
Un-Commonly Good! One complaint, they need a Bigger place with indoor dining....
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
This place was amazing. I didn't read ahead to know that the store itself is closed - according to the sign they're moving to a bigger spot and they've outgrown the current location. Whatever give them a break on that! The pastries, baked goods, and coffee we got was amazing. Not the least expensive roll ever but one of the best. So good.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Simply the best bread in the area! Now they also have beer and wine and in house dining at their 8th st location!
google avatar

Rita I.

Yelp
So so so good! Can you guys please open an outpost in metro Detroit?! From the bread to the sandwiches to the pastries and cookies this place is 5 stars! Also the coffee! Yum!

Sue L.

Yelp
I chose this place for coffee and a bite for breakfast after reading all the positive comments. The venue is very nice and the staff was very friendly. I selected a brewed coffee which was mild and smooth- - a little too mild for my taste. I also ordered a breakfast sandwich and have it give it a thumbs down.. The egg had a funny taste and I removed it in order to eat the sandwich. The place is definitely too pricey for the product...close to $20 with tip. I normally would not leave a review, but since I selected Common Good based upon reviews, I felt I needed to share my experience for others seeking tge experience of others.

Roger B.

Yelp
Outstanding baked goods. Have yet to try their pizza however. Definitely planning to in the future.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
The pastries are delicious! Well laminated & an interesting assortment. We got the fig jam & pistachio danish, chocolate almond croissant, & salted caramel Brittany. All were excellent. This place is easy to miss, tucked into the corner of an outlet building but worth the trip! The only negative I have is their chai - truly disappointing. It tasted like ginger water. This was the first time I haven't been able to finish a chai.
google avatar

Pat L.

Yelp
If you are after Traverse City's BEST artisan bread, you must stop here. You can't go in though. Order from outside. I have never beat the sourdough anywhere! Yumm!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Try everything! Go to both locations! One has delicious dinner and both have amazing pastries.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
OMG! THE BEST BAKERY AROUND!!! I have baked artisan breads at home for three decades. These folks are true masters of the craft. They are so far above me that I nearly stopped. Croissants, breads, sandwiches, baked goods... You can't go wrong here!
google avatar

Marin C.

Yelp
Carryout only currently, what's available can be seen from the window. I tried an almond and chocolate croissant. It was not bad. I will have to try the plain next time. Almond paste and chocolate together felt like too much for me, but I love them both so I had to try it. I had a latte too, just cause I'm extra like that. Hazelnut. Mmmm. That was some smooth espresso and it made me happy. Merci beaucoup.
google avatar

Patches O.

Yelp
This bakery rocks, these danishes are so good. They only offer curbside and had one lady running back and forth placing and delivering the orders. If I lved here (which I will in 10 years, at least that's the plan) I would be eating here everyday. Everything taste wonderful, a little pricey but it's good and I'm on vacation so doesn't matter.
google avatar

Jake B.

Yelp
The aged cheddar sourdough was amazing and in my photo a coffee and savory croissant with jam/bacon. It was wonderful. The staff was also very nice and helpful. So glad I stumbled upon this place!
