New York Restaurateur Mario Batali Is Listed as an Owner of a Bakery in Michigan | Eater NY

"A two-location bakery in Traverse City, Common Good Bakery — founded by Jason and Linda Gollan in 2017 — has reopened its original location after renovations, opened a second location this week at 1115 East Eighth Street, and is shifting to include dinner service. In a liquor-license application filed this month, Mario Batali is listed as an applicant; Jason Gollan confirmed Batali’s involvement, calling him “an owner, a minority investor, a neighbor, and a friend,” and said Batali is a regular who offered support. The Gollans wrote that they plan to leverage the partnership with Batali to launch a series of celebrity-chef events to tackle food insecurity in northern Michigan, with each event designed to raise tens of thousands of dollars." - Luke Fortney

🌟 A Truly Common Good Experience in Traverse City 🌟 My wife and I visited from Ohio, and from the moment we stepped into Common Good, we felt welcomed—not just as customers, but as part of something meaningful. We started with the chicken sandwich, stacked with vibrant heirloom tomatoes and tucked into perfectly toasted artisan bread. The house pickles added the perfect tang, and the chopped salad was crisp, refreshing, and full of flavor. I sipped on a smooth iced coffee that hit the spot. But it didn’t stop there. We enjoyed it so much, we came back for dinner—and let me tell you, the Amelia Pizza was incredible. Truly good for the soul. Every bite was layered with flavor, warmth, and care. We could feel the intention behind the food. Another favorite moment? Sitting with a hearty Caesar salad, anchovies and all, while soaking in the uplifting energy. One of the team members wore a shirt that said “Do Good, Every Day”—and that spirit echoed through the entire experience. Whether you’re a local or visiting like us, this place is a gem. The care, the craft, the community spirit—it’s all here. We’re already looking forward to seeing you again next year. From Ohio with love—keep up the excellence!! It was nice to meet own Jason, and our server Ella and staff members.

We visited Common Good Bakery for breakfast sandwiches before golf on Friday and went back on Sunday for more! The house breakfast sandwiches were wonderful! The egg patty thick and the bread homemade. The bread really made sandwich in my opinion. Both ham and bacon options were yummy, though I preferred the ham. The prices seemed too high to me, and I understand the area I was in and the time of year. Given that, that’s the only reason I am leaving a 4 star review

I stopped by Common Goods and tried their lattes. They were decent — great if you enjoy a medium roast with a slightly acidic finish, not my favorite. I also tried the chocolate flourless cake, it was good but small. However, the lemon raspberry tart was absolutely delicious — bright, fresh, and packed with flavor! Prices are a little on the higher side, but the quality and cozy atmosphere make it worth checking out.

Google
We were looking for a quick place to grab a breakfast sandwich and coffee from, this place has well exceeded our expectations. From their house made bread to their amazing service, I am so glad to have searched the best bakery near me!

We had an amazing breakfast experience at Common Good! My wife and I started with the ricotta egg croissant and the whipped ricotta toast—both were absolutely delicious. The flavors were fresh and well-balanced, and the coffee was excellent too. We couldn’t resist trying the cherry chocolate croissant and the cheesecake afterward, and they were both out of this world. Everything was made with care and tasted homemade in the best possible way. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a cozy, flavorful, and high-quality breakfast or brunch!

Google
This was such a surprise! The place looked like a cute little cafe/bakery. A place I’d hide away from a rainy day with a nice espresso. However, the dinner blew my mind! My family and I came by for a quick bite to eat which turned into a full experience starting with the amazing drinks and homemade sourdough bread. The salads were incredibly fresh, I had the heirloom tomato..followed by their world famous pesto pizza. It truly was world famous! Best pizza I’ve had in awhile. Not to mention their baked goods. My mom bought out their last tray of items consisting of chocolate croissants, cinnamon buns, almond croissants and more! We will be back tomorrow..no joke! Thank you to the entire staff to catered to our hungry appetite the whole time.

Google
Nice little spot to stop for breakfast. I really enjoyed the vegetarian breakfast sandwich, though my partner got the house breakfast sandwich with sausage and said it was a little bland. The prices seemed quite high for the portions ($16 for a breakfast sandwich with no sides) and they unfortunately only filled my coffee up about 2/3rds of the way which left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Google
Found this local bakery online. Pictures and reviews look so good so I had to come get some food. When you walk in you see big loafs of bread and croissant on the rack. Other pastries on the display and an open kitchen design. Food menu is kinda small and I should have choose vegetarian breakfast sandwich or other breakfast sandwich instead of the croissant wich. Not that it is bad but croissant with eggs is kinda lackluster. Next time. Ice coffee in a tall glass is so much better than in the plastic cup. Maybe because you can see the milk and coffee mixing translucent though the glass.

Yelp
Just added some photos lurking on my phone. Def try and stop by. Prices high-ish, but are reflected in quality goods. Tummy approved.

Yelp
Staff and cooks were wonderful as always. Brownies, chocolate croissants, breakfast sandwiches all very good. Had their bread on past vacation trips and that was yummy too.

Yelp
They have delicious pastries, staff were friendly, and I loved the cleanliness and warm environment. I reallllly recommend their morning buns! Just wish there was an icing or something to go with it. But they were amazing on their own!

Yelp
They have since put wood fired pizza on the menu on 8th street. So good! Crust is thin and crispy and the ingredients are first rate!

Yelp
Cute easy fast delicious. Wide selection of sandwiches, drinks pizza something for everyone. Cute 60s vine in the neighborhood. Counter service. Fast casual.

Yelp
WAY over priced and under performed. Breakfast sandwich i had wasn't worth $5. Let alone the $19 i paid. And a Breakfast place that doesn't have coffee ready to serve. . No need to go back after watching what others where paying

Yelp
Common Good had a steady stream of customers the whole time I was there, but the service kept up well. The tartine of the day (fig, bacon, and goat cheese) was fresh and flavorful, with a generous layer of greens that paired nicely with the crunchy bacon bits. And the fresh bread is always a winner. The Cubano was tasty too, though I would have preferred a lighter hand with the Dijon. The cherry chocolate Danish was good, but didn't quite stand out. Other pastries have been delicious when we've gotten them at Common Goods' other location. Overall, it has a comfortable atmosphere, and I'd be open to trying their pizzas of which there seems to be a nice mix of white and red sauce offerings.

Yelp
I hate to give a bad review after one interaction. But the service was almost hostile. I just wanted coffee & a sweet. It was late in the afternoon, but not closing time. She acted as if I was inconveniencing her. Maybe, I won't be a bother again. The coffee was mediocre but the pastry was good.

Yelp
A popular local spot turning out nice pizzas -- both the pesto pie (with a surprising combo of a mostly pesto layer, and dollops of tomato sauce on top) and the spicy pie (a cheese pizza with calabrian chili strips on top) are worth getting, and adding either the pepperoni or the sausage will improve them too. My one complaint is that the crust runs a little dry for my tastes, and I guess it's a bit expensive for what you get, but what you get is big-city-level pizza in the minor burg of Traverse City, Michigan, so my complaints are minor. Nice wine selection too.

Yelp
Oh my goodness locals run!!!! Don't walk , sprint!! call Usain Bolt ! get into a race car, and get as far away from this place as you possibly can! I've never experienced a more overcharged, basic facility in my life. Please the prices are not worth it and if they do charge so much because they want to give their employees a living wage and those employees need to live somewhere else because they are so rude.! so essentially I've been there multiple times and I feel comfortable enough now to give a horrible review. Essentially you will be ignored. It will take way too long to get basic items delivered and unless you're a very rich white woman in her late 60s do not expect to be treated with the tiniest shred of human decency. I'm talking. No one will even look you in the eye. It's places like these that genuinely ruin the town I grew up in. They only want to cater to the extremely wealthy. I can promise you that the food is subpar at best and yeah it was. It's just the most horrific experience. I can imagine please do not support this business. Get pretentious, subpar performers like this out of our community! I guess anyone else reading those who wants to overpriced basic foods in the town and make people feel genuinely disgusting for even walking in the door. Please continue to come here because you deserve it. You deserve to be disgusting.

Yelp
I love common good it's a great place to stop just for coffee highly recommend getting a meal there. The food is always delicious. The staff is always so friendly. I can't believe more people don't go here. It has a great atmosphere and the best music in town.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for lunch. They have a nice little lunch and breakfast menu. The service is really friendly and everything came out quickly. When I arrived, the guy walked me through the whole menu and was really excited about everything they had to offer. I ordered an iced tea. It was expensive, $6 for an iced tea without any ice. It was not a good iced tea. It tasted like it had been made in the same pot as coffee so it had a stale coffee aftertaste that was not good. The chicken pesto sandwich was good. I would give it a 6/10 stars. The pesto is excellent. The bread is delicious, but it was over toasted and the crust was very hard. The bread and butter pickles on the side are excellent. There is some room for improvement. I'd definitely come back to buy bread!

Karen J.

Yelp
I have to agree with previous reviewers. This place is way over priced. Husband and I came in for breakfast and both ordered the "tartine", $15 each, which come to find out, is nothing but a piece of toast with a tiny little poached egg on top sprinkled with a few bacon bits and about a tablespoon of some skinny little shoestring potato chips. Maybe it's the fancy name that allows them to charge so much. With two cups of eight ounce coffee, the bill came out to $39.43 and we left feeling hungry and robbed. This is our second time trying this place and we won't be back.

Yelp
Just popping in to share my two cents. Stopped into local spot Common Good on 14th with an appetite and good intentions. Upon entry, the vibes were there and the menu items intrigued. I ordered the French onion grilled cheese, hoping for a fusion of my favorite soup and my comfort food of choice. When presented with my order, it was as if the record scratched and time stood still. My French onion grilled CHEESE did not contain CHEESE (see included photo). In conclusion, the vibes: present; and the cheese: nonexistent.

Yelp
Went here on Saturday night. Surprised to see they had Roman pasta dishes. I ordered the cacio e pepe but was kind of disappointed. The bucatini noodles themselves were great but the sauce was lacking. It is a simple sauce of pasta water, pecorino and pepper but it was bland. From other ppl that have dined here, I'd say - stay away from the pasta - the pizza looked pretty good besides its price.

Yelp
I have a particular pretense that you can judge a city's food scene by whether it has any good bakeries. I'm not talking about cake shops, mind you, I'm talking about real bakeries-- the ones that bake real bread every morning, whose demise James Baldwin lamented in 1963 as emblematic of the decline of a society's self-respect, as Americans shifted to mass-produced Wonderbread. Common Good delivers in this regard. I can't speak to any of the prepared food (sandwiches, etc.) but we did pick up a couple of loaves of bread and some pastries and they were all next level. The morning bun, which is kind of a cinnamon bun that just has cinnamon sugar instead of cinnamon goo, was out of this world. And we got a whole grain loaf that I'm still daydreaming about, days later. Also, almond and chocolate croissants, brittanys, and what not. The new space (I guess they moved from 14th St.?) is bright and comfortable, with a positively Nordic vibe, in spite of being located in a sort of classic midcentury strip mall setup. The staff were great and I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Nice to see a lively establishment brightening up the neighborhood! The chicken pesto sandwich was good but not for the price and the bread made the sandwich hard to eat. We also tried the Egg sandwich and it also was underwhelming. They need someone to oversee what the kitchen is sending out!
google avatar

Yelp
Holy so expensive but really good iced oat latte and pretty good croissantz, but maybbb not good enough to warrant the price imho

Carol B.

Yelp
Stopped in to get a bite and a coffee. Ending up getting the house breakfast sandwich. It was good but I was disappointed nothing came with it. Something (1/2 avocado, fruit) would have been nice even to just dress it up. Instead of coffee I order a vanilla cappuccino which was luke warm and too sweet. I felt it was overpriced for what I got. I do want to say the danishes looked incredible, I wish I would have gotten one of them and coffee.

Yelp
Was looking for breakfast place to eat when I found this bakery. And let me just say so very yummy have tried a lot from there and not had a thing I haven't liked.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Common Good's pastries so I was exited to try their second location and new dinner spot. Unfortunately it just didn't do it for me. I felt like the food was just okay and very overpriced. The white bean mash was eh, the tomato pasta wasn't very good, the pizza was great, but for $30 I'm not sure I'd come back.

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with my daughter and grandkids and we all loved it! Everyone was very nice and helpful! The restaurant was clean and comfortable. The kids shared a pizza and they both loved it! They also loved watching it be prepared and bake. I had the chicken pesto panini and my daughter had the turkey pear. Both were incredible. We also had well-prepared lattes and the kids had their homemade lemonade. We will be back!

Heather B.

Yelp
So here's the thing. I'm all about supporting local and I am very willing to pay more for local, artisan food. But not when it's an obvious rip-off. I'm sorry, but $6 for an orange juice????? $4 for a 2 oz cookie?? $2 for the tiniest, thinnest chocolate brownie square less than 1-inch by 1-inch by 1 cm? I get it, you say you pay excellent wages and benefits. But I checked out your job listings and your wages are below or at industry average. I've kept my mouth shut about this for awhile. I'm a local. I really really want to like you. When you first opened on 14th St, I was a regular. But over time, I've seen your prices skyrocket while your portions and quality have plummeted. Your markups are insane and take advantage of your customers. That feels terrible as a consumer. You need to know that. Do better.

Kris W.

Yelp
The interior is beautiful and calm. The service is friendly and prompt. But best of all the food is amazingly good. I had the tartine of the day, my partner the quiche Lorraine. We both were more than satisfied, and though I was full when I finished, I was sorry not to have more time to enjoy the food. Coffees were also excellent. We are here in Traverse City tomorrow, and I'm already looking forward to tomorrows breakfast here.

B H.

Yelp
I've always loved Common Good's bread - it's hands down my favorite in town. When this new location was announced I was thrilled. The positives? Great service! The pasta dishes are fantastic. They definitely need something additional with them, like a bread item or something. I can't in good faith recommend the chicken cutlet given the enormous upcharge. Far more negatives for me, though. Like their bread and other baked items? They...just don't really exist at dinner time? At all? The white bean mash is the most disappointing appetizer I've ever received at a restaurant. Flavorless doesn't even begin to cover it - along with incredibly flavorless crackers. It's a baffling item and doesn't make you excited for the main course. When they first started offering pizzas at their original location a few years ago I was excited - and the price was a hard pill to swallow but the pizzas were massive. But $30ish for the current pizza sizes is truly absurd. They taste fine, but at that price there are far far far better options all over town. $4 to add 10 thin slices of pepperoni? The profit margins must be enormous. No pepperoni pie and requiring it as an add on felt like a seedy business choice. I hope they improve and find a groove. It's been incredibly dead at dinner time when we've went, which was surprising as it's a newer restaurant and it was well into the tourist season. Its a nice looking place with promise, but there are more exciting options in town to dine at the moment.

Joshua R.

Yelp
Had 4 different pizzas for takeout. 3 of them were mediocre and one (the mushroom) was just not very good. There are a lot of much better and less expensive (each of ours was $30 or more) places for pizza.
google avatar

Deb D.

Yelp
I'm so excited to have Common Good as an option for elegantly fresh dining. My friend and I had dinner there, and both of us were pleased with our entrees...exceptional service from the entire team - They are a dedicated crew who assure a great experience. Good wine selection, too.
google avatar

Erica W.

Yelp
Great service and we ordered the almond croissant and breakfast sandwich. The almond croissant was one of the best I have had. We also ordered lattes which were super tasty.

JT D.

Yelp
Absolutely the best bakery in TC Go and enjoy! Pizzas are awesome. Pricy but worth it.

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Had the chicken pesto sandwich, which was served on stale, burned, (or maybe both) bread. I opted to add $2.00 to my bill for what turned out to be a handful of potato chip crumbs. The really sad part of this is that I remember a time when Common Good cared about the quality of the food they served.

Wanda L.

Yelp
Best pastries in Traverse City, but I wasn't impressed with the food. My pizza tasted like the crust that people leave on their plate after they've eaten the good part! Maybe just a bad choice on my part. I think they need to reevaluate their menu. Only pastries for me!

Danielle W.

Yelp
Unbelievable! My family got several different items and all were excellent - croissant, breakfast sandwich, pastry. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Luke H.

Yelp
Really good food. Very odd and poor service. For some reason they have two different sales platforms? On both of most recent visits they did not have my order or even a record of it. Until I showed them. Then...nothing. No apology. Either time. Too bad, really...

Nate P.

Yelp
Came in today, the red headed man who was working the register acted like we didn't exist. Felt uncomfortable and like we weren't welcomed. This is not my first time at the new location and I have no issues with food or product, in fact the pizza is fantastic. However, this is one of those experiences that I'm going to share when people ask if I've been. Keep doing what your doing. Well maybe have a conversation with staff about customer service. I get it, everyone has bad days but to make me and my family feel unwelcome or not important or even present is harsh. We came in around 1pm and my wife and I are still talking about it.

Carol N.

Yelp
Wonderful addition to Traverse City food and dining venues. Delicious breads and baked goods. Tried the savory pastries and they were delicious. Has a menu for in-house dining but did not try
