Pay-What-You-Can Markets Provide Food for the Common Good | Eater

"A half-acre nonprofit farm in LeDroit Park that deliberately sits between a high-poverty housing project to the north and wealthier neighborhoods to the south, using a sliding-scale, pay-what-you-can farm stand to bridge local income gaps. Shoppers are shown full prices and can choose to pay 25, 50, 75, or 100 percent (with up to $30 off), and roughly 35–40 percent of customers now take a discount — about twice the share from the program’s first season. Managers have juggled weekly pricing as inflation and SNAP cuts hit, growing about 3,800 pounds of produce last season but still spending more than $40,000 on outside purchases and relying on large foundation and government grants as well as donated goods to keep the stand stocked. Staff and volunteers frequently pick up donated produce and accept community support to keep access to fresh fruits and vegetables for neighbors who otherwise might go without." - Gabriel Pietrorazio

Went out to support a wonderful new author, Janis Evans, at her book signing & sale in this beautiful, tucked away, DC gem!

Great community garden. I go to their weekly market. They have fresh produce and fruit, some of which they grow indie on-site. They often have dairy, meat, quiches, pies, pasta, mustard, honey, and other things I can't remember! Staff and volunteers are very friendly They offer triple match for food stamps and pay what you want (pay less if you need, more of you can) options. They also have classes Next to a playground, water spray area, outside exercise area, easy street parking.

My initial exposure to Common Good City Farm was as a volunteer. The day's projects involved trenching and soil rotation.

Love the opportunity to volunteer here, learning more about gardening and serving the community. Staff is very helpful directing and teaching. They also offer classes, related to gardening and herbs, etc.

This is such a wonderful community organization. We take our middle school students here each year as part of a unit on food justice and they staff are great and explaining issues like food deserts to our students.

What amazes me is that I never see any rats in the garden YET the surrounding community is infested. Whatever they know, I need to find out.

Friendly staff and good general information. Space is still a work-in-progress; orchard section recently pruned back.
