Rooftop Restaurant and Cocktail Bar Communion Opens in Mission Hills - Eater San Diego

"The companion piece to Paradis, the sidewalk cafe by day and pintxos bar by night that opened earlier this month in Mission Hills, arrives this Thursday, November 21. Crowning the eye-catching Sasan building, Communion lands on the eighth-floor rooftop, spanning 120 seats across its glass-enclosed dining room and heated patio. Owner Jacquee Renna (La Quinta Cliffhouse, Pacifica Seafood) has entrusted executive chef Mike Moritz, a vet of foundational spots like Mille Fleurs and Mister A’s with its global dinner menu, which includes triple-cream brie baked in filo dough and served with lingonberry jam, seasonal fruits, and local sage flour honey, a roasted beet “filet” with vegan bordelaise sauce, and dry-aged duck breast in a cassis reduction with parsnip, broccolini, cippolini onion. And George’s at the Cove alum Aly Lyng does double duty as the executive pastry chef for both establishments, baking bread and pastries for Paradis while whipping up desserts at Communion like a vanilla bean Basque cheesecake with salted caramel and a warm flourless chocolate tart paired with espresso ice cream. The space also gives the neighborhood its own rooftop spot for cocktails, shaking up refreshing sippers like Yama’s Reign, made with Japanese gin, yuzu liqueur, kiwi cucumber syrup, furikake tincture, lime, and sesame, and more direct drinks including the Eternal Path, a mix of rye, vanilla and cherry-infused Campari, sweet vermouth, and cherry bark vanilla bitters." - Candice Woo

My husband was over the moon with the half-chicken cooked in spices in a sauce of corn and beans. I highly recommend the stone fruit (peaches & cherries) with stretchy burrata cheese in the center of the plate, and a good dose of black pepper. It is enough for 2 to share. I had the lamb lollipops. Sadly, it is 3 thin cuts of lamb loin chops with about 50% bone & fat. It is seasoned really well & grilled to perfection, medium-rare. Tasty, but it’s not going to make a meal on its own. Great views from this top floor restaurant of a new, pink condominium in Mission Hills.

San Diego continues to impress me with its culinary creativity and the spaces we are able to transform. Communion became an absolutely favorite right away during my visit. Breathtaking views the moment the elevator doors open then take you into an elevated space with a delicate blend of traditional gothic elements with contemporary materials and lighting. Service was on point and Daniel especially has a passion for the craft that ensured the experience was on point. The cocktails were delightful and the dishes were a sensation for the tastebuds. It’s a treat to be able to watch the city transition from sunset to the evening glow with downtown glittering in the distance and the planes coming in. Communion does not disappoint and I hope they become a community staple. Cheers!

Google
All around exceptional experience. We came for Easter brunch and had their pre-fix menu. The salmon crostini was delicious along with the French omelette, and berry tart. Sydnee was excellent with being on top of us having everything we needed and enjoying ourselves. The views were phenomenal and the interior design makes you want to do a photoshoot here. This is a great spot for girls night/ brunch or a cute dinner date.

Google
Good food, great creation with rice and watermelon, rice and octopus too. The beef good, not unforgettable. Nice view and original location. The waiters are pretty warm. They can improve the "mise en place", too easy. I should came back for a definitive judgement. The bill was correct around 70$ x pax, without wine

Upon entering from street, you’ll make your way to elevator to get to the rooftop where you’ll check in with the host. The view is stellar at this rooftop restaurant. I highly recommend securing a reservation around sunset. The service is warm and attentive. I really enjoyed my two cocktails, the Fleeting Flowers and Ay Dios Cyrus! The food was well seasoned and flavorful. The meal was great from start to finish. Their risotto is the best that I’ve had in San Diego. I left full and happy. Street parking was a bit of challenge, but not enough to deter me from returning again and again.

Google
The rooftop level space is beautiful, even on a chilly rainy night, good cocktails (most $18/each), for four people ($300 bill) they recommended 4 appetizers and 3 entrees to share, so I’d expect spending at least $75-$100/person after service charge 4% and tip. The focaccia is hard/crunchy on the outside which I havent had before. We didn’t love the octopus, wouldnt get again. Reservation recommended. Parking could be a challenge in this neighborhood. Brunch was okay, got the mushroom omelette which I wouldnt get again, came with potatoes which was not listed on the menu so we ordered a side of potatoes and the server did not clarify for us so we wasted some food. again go for the view.

Google
Beautiful views, excellent service, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! The only reason I gave 4 stars versus 5 was because they were out of 2 items on their menu (that I really wanted to try). Tip: parking can be a bit challenging in that area, so plan on arriving earlier than expected to ensure you find a spot. And I def recommend making a reservation.

Google
Perfect spot for a romantic date night! Hubby and I loved the communion. It’s a gorgeous restaurant with a perfect view anywhere you sit and every single space is perfectly designed (including the communion themed restrooms!). The food was spectacular, as well as the drinks. We loved the dessert and dessert wines. It was seriously a wonderful place to visit for our very rare date nights. We want to check out their brunch on Sundays as well!

Yelp
So I came down from Orange County to hang with a friend and found this listed as a great new place to try. Didn't know it was voted best SD for 2025. Had a great time and loved the food. Seating....book for the terrace. Heaters out there and is very comfortable. Indoor seating is nice if you cant get terrace. Its in the bar area and still nice. Drinks..really tasty! Had the white negroni. These are sorta rare right now. If you dont mind a little bitterness, its really fantastic. Lauren at the front desk is just a great young lady. Jade was our server and was so helpful .recommended the drinks and our food. We went with the potatoes appetizer. VERY good!! I had the sea bass special. Was a very nice sized portion of fish and overall surprisingly large meal. My friend had the seafood pasta. REALLY good and very light! For dessert I had the stone fruit sorbet..super light and flavorfil flavorful. If I lived here, I would be back. Especially since they are expanding happy hour from 4 to 6! So food, views, drinks and service...all FANTASTIC!!

Yelp
I was really hoping we would have a great experience and this would be my new favorite rooftop restaurant in San Diego.Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing visit last Friday. It was my dad's 75th birthday and we had a nice table with a gorgeous view, but customer service was off, to say the least. We ordered two appetizers and one of them, which was the Indian style potatoes came out with a wad of long black hair on it. Not one piece, but multiple pieces sprinkled in and around the food, which was gross. When I pointed it out to the waitress, she quietly took the plate away, but didn't apologize or even offer to replace it. She just proceeded to ask what we wanted for our main entrées. I told her we were in the middle of drinks and appetizers, and we would like to have the appetizers that we intended to have but without the hair. She was super weird about it & took a while to get back to us. At that point, we decided we were over the appetizers so we ordered our entrées. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was a very small portion for a $60 plate. There was barely any lobster in it. Nobody at my table was particularly happy with their dinner, but we were all trying to forget about it and focus on my dad's birthday & have a good time. At the very end, the waitress came out with the bill and there was an extra $50 charge on there. My husband asked her why it was on there, and she initially denied it was incorrect and proceeded to tell us that we were reading it wrong. Finally, it became apparent that the drinks from the table next to us were charged to our bill so she took it off, but was rude about it as if it was our fault. Not only did they charge us extra, but didn't compensate us for that gross hair incident. The waitress was cold and unapologetic, and I just found that she really made the whole experience kind of crappy. For a $300 plus dinner it was just a low brow experience. Disappointing for a beautiful place like this. In retrospect, I should've spoken to the manager, but it was my dad's birthday and I didn't want to focus too much on the disappointments...

Yelp
First off, the views from this place are spectacular. Loved the outdoor balcony area that has a view of downtown, the ocean, and the airport- perfect for plane spotting. Really cute central bar area and decor, great for date night, happy hour, or brunch. Service was wonderful- friendly, attentive, and the staff really work as a great team to provide a seamless service. Now let's get into the cocktails and food. **Cocktails** -Sadie Hawkins: I hit the ground running with their Old Fashion, with hints of Cherry Soda. Def a heavy hitter and a sipper. -Echo Chamber: Japanese Whiskey Highball; refreshing and easier to gulp down; could order a couple of these -Smoke in the Grass: Mezcal, Lemongrass and Calamansi with a bright green hue. Fun to look at as it is to drink -Ay Dios: Tequila and Hibiscus, raspberry and Aleppo salt **Food** Wanted to try a few things and meant to be shared. Place all the orders in and they course it out nicely for you. -Foccaccia: a rec from a friend, but thought it was alright. Lots of other good options, though. -Local Yellowfin Tuna: Tuna two ways- Poke and Spicy Tuna served with rice and fresh, crisp taro chips; would order again -Steak Tartare: delicious and served with fresh, well-seasoned chicharon (with audible crackling so you know it's fresh); would order again -Chaat Masala Potatoes: Thinly slides fingerlings with a delicious seasoning, reminiscent of Irish Nachos, balanced out with crisp jalapeno rings, cilantro, chopped shallots; great to share but could've had them crispier -Coconut Milk-poached catch of the day (Seabass that day): super savory and rich Tom Yum broth, Bokchoy, Tomatoes, and Mushrooms. Wanted a lighter entree and this was perfect. We also ordered a side of roasted Broccolini since we wanted more veggies. **Dessert** -Ritual: Perfect for the coffee lovers; Ritual coffee infused Espresso Ice cream atop a warm flourless chocolate tart with hazelnut praline; Great flavors and textures and def a rich dessert but not overpowering -Panna Cotta: Juxtaposition from the Ritual, light, airy, fruity, with fresh peach and almond shortcake Overall, a great dinner and see ourselves coming back for their Happy Hour from 4p-6pm at the bar. Mission Hills can be tough with parking but we actually found tons of options, both free and paid, within a 1-2 block radius so wasn't a pain at all. Great event space also with awesome views and def worth multiple visits and special gatherings.

Yelp
It pains me to have to post this review, but after a lack of response for several weeks from the restaurant owners after giving them a chance to privately address my concerns, I'm posting my full review here. My family was visiting from out of town and so I thought it would be nice to impress them with a place with a nice view and good food. We had dinner on July 6th (a Sunday evening) here. There are some serious issues with the food which other reviewers have already mentioned that need to be addressed quickly. First of all, the space is gorgeous, the decor and the ambiance are all top notch. We had reservations (which require up front deposit btw) and were seated almost immediately upon arrival and had a gorgeous view of downtown and beyond. The service was AMAZING and we were very happy with Daniel! He was very attentive to our needs and very friendly and on top of all the important details. The drinks were great and we commend the bartender on excellent mixology. I enjoyed a unique smoked mezcal drink and my brother enjoyed the mule, top notch! The appetizers were good, although the pork belly was a tad on the overcooked side but very flavorful. The barata was excellent. Unfortunately the food really missed the mark for us. While we can appreciate the creative multi cultural flair of the menu, there was just something off. The fresh catch of the day was overcooked/tough. The lack of including something like rice with the fish is a huge miss in my opinion. The lamb lollipops were cold and very tough to chew. The salad presented in the dish left a lot to be desired. The lobster risotto was over cooked and tough. The risotto had a crunch to it. When you are spending this much for dinner (it came to almost $500 with tip for 4 people with cocktails and apps), you expect a lot better quality Overall, I would recommend this place for cocktails and apps but not for meals. The unique flair of the menu does not appeal to the masses, and the quality of the food just isn't there.

Yelp
Late review.... Went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago. First of all, the views are AMAZING! You can see the entire SD skyline. The food was really good. I highly recommend the chicken dish. It was so flavorful!! I had the lobster risotto. It was good but just needed a dash of salt. The service was great! Daniel was AWESOME! I would definitely return here.

Yelp
Finally got to try hereafter it's been bookmarked in my Yelp forever! I did see mixed reviews of this place so I was on the fence. What I loved - Stunning Views Loved the pink palette of restaurant What we had: Pink Matter - Refreshing but also spirit forward. Has about 4oz of alcohol so sip slowly! Aurora Borealis Mocktail - Sweet & bitter. This was just okay. House made Focaccia - Chewy and soft! Half Chicken - Chicken was moist. Sauce was pretty good and probably would be better if it had a starch on the side to soak up more of the sauce. Good portion size. It was super salty on one side but got better as I continued to eat it. Seafood Pasta - This was a big entree with lots of seafood. Also was salty for me. 12 oz Ribeye - Overpriced imo and this was just okay. Burnt Cheesecake - This is rich and dense, recommend sharing. This was kinda eggy and was a little underwhelming for me. Berry Pavlova - This was just okay as well. Pretty presentation though. Tips: Recommend making a reservation since it can get busy. For the view, book the Terrace in advance! Overall, amazing view and venue but food was just okay for me. Service was great.

Yelp
We beat the rush with a 6pm reservation and a spot in the terrace! Wow! What a view! We ordered the Focaccia and loved it! We also shared the Baked Triple Cream which was surprisingly delicious especially with the leftover focaccia. My husband ordered the chicken since the pork chop wasn't available. He really liked the chicken. I ordered the BEET filet and it was a vegetarian delight! Their Moscow mule mocktails was good too! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
The views here are beautiful! Also you don't get interrupted by planes landing like in Little Italy and can see Cabrillo on a clear day. Our service was phenomenal for an earlier dinner and our server David made sure our bday celebration was a special one. Thank you David! The ambiance at the bar was light and airy with chic decor and they had Aesop in the bathroom (how you know it's bougie). They have a pink waiting area down below before you head up to the restaurant in the elevator. Street parking wasn't terrible on a weekday evening, but can imagine it's harder on weekends. Foodwise, the catch of the day with coconut tom yum broth was the highlight and the bread focaccia with the butter. We had sea bass and the broth was lighter in flavor not as traditional which our server told us in advance. You can skip the pork belly, way too fatty for what we got and the mushroom risotto was alright but not my favorite. Drinks were incredible, all the cocktails we got were good. I'd come back for the drinks for sure and of course the views and excellent service.

Yelp
We were visiting from out of town and stopped here for pre-dinner drinks. It had the absolute best ambiance and was so cute. So many little details to make it super stylish. I had a Fleeting Flower which was a butterfly pea tea and chamomile infused vodka, guava, cardamom, bitters, and prosecco. I thought it was very tasty! We also enjoyed the focaccia and that was great, along with the specialty butter. Definitely recommend stopping in!

Yelp
I came for brunch service this past weekend. Beautiful location, interior, and a lovely view of downtown (from the enclosed patio seating). I tried the matcha latte which was very pale green and tasted very weakly of tea, the waitress assured me it was the type of matcha they used - I prefer a richer grassy-green matcha so it wasn't for me, might be good for first-time drinkers though! She kindly swapped it for a regular latte and that was very good. The French omelette is classic and a safe choice, nice hefty portion as well. The Bitter Ritual cocktail is delicious and dangerous, I could have drunk 5!

Yelp
The view and the vibe from here are excellent. Great happy hour deals and there is an air of professionalism that runs throughout the dining experience. All the servicers and bartenders knew their menu and were friendly. The tuna appetizer was a cool take on a standard tower/curdo. Loved the pairing. The lamb was prepared well and the Indian spices mixed with some fresh salad and the fruit added a great balance. The lobster risotto was a little mushy for our liking. It had potential but came up a little short on seasoning.

Alejandro C.

Yelp
Lobster risotto: Lobster "chewy", risotto "pasty" Salad: Bland Pork belly " Good but Salty Lamb lollipop OK, nothing outstanding, and solid 6.0 Wine: Good Mezcal Drink, not good, not smoky and tasted like Cheap whisky . View OK. Decor: looks a lot better and a lot larger on Instagram. Server great service but oversold the taste of food. Not recommendable

Yelp
Sitting at the top floor overlooking the Mission Hills neighborhood with views of the SD skyline, Communion has a beautiful space that's modern, bright and beautiful. The host awaits you on the bottom floor. We had a reservation at 4:15, was checked in promptly and seated within 5 minutes. The elevator takes you to the top where their large bar takes center stage with table seating along the windows for a view. Our server came quickly and was great throughout. She explained that the idea of the restaurant is to share delicious foods nestled in the sky, surrounded with great company. Foodwise, we weren't super hungry as we had a late lunch so we got 3 dishes. 1. Hamachi crudo: 8/10. Beautiful presentation. Thick pieces of fish. Needed a hit of acid. 2. Spanish octopus: 10/10. Our fav dish of the night. The octopus had a nice char but was tender. It sat upon squid ink risotto that was so delicious. 3. Lamb lollipops: 7/10. These were just okay. It would have benefited from a better crust. The cook was perfectly mid rare. The seasoning was underwhelming. I fear I've been spoiled by the lamb at Callie. 4. Sticky toffee apple cake 10/10. This was a perfect dessert. A great mixture of textures and temperatures. Not overtly sweet and surprisingly light. A great end to our meal. Parking is tough in this neighborhood. You just gotta get lucky with street parking.

Huong N.

Yelp
Really pretty view of downtown on one side of the restaurant. However the tables on that side with the view are mainly single 2 people tables so if you're looking to get dinner with a view don't go with a party. We got the porter house steak and it was cooked to perfection so tender so good. The herb butter was amazing as well. Steak was more than enough for 2 people to share. We even had left overs. Side note: the reflections from all of the lights inside the restaurant reflects on the windows and it's hard to take photos of downtown
google avatar

William K.

Yelp
Communion was a trendy new restaurant with an elevated view in Mission Hills with an art deco vibe of soft pink hues and brass accents. The menu is sharable small plates of exotic asian fusion.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious, classy, rooftop restaurant/bar in Mission Hills. The food was really tasty and had lovely presentation. Nice for a sweet date night with a quiet, intimate vibe. We sat at the bar and the bartender was lovely, service was great. I can't wait to come back again and try more menu items!

Yelp
I had first learned about Communion by reading another person's review on Yelp. I had been unaware of it before that time. The restaurant is located in a new condominium building on University Avenue at Goldfinch Street, in Mission Hills district of San Diego. You enter into a leafy courtyard of the building then take an elevator up to the very top floor. The hostesses, who are all very kind, especially Nicole, will greet you. There is a large bar in the center of the room and tables positioned all around the perimeter. On the South side, there are views all the way to Downtown! There is also a large enclosed patio room, which is somewhat plain in its design. The Sole Meuniere was quite good. I also enjoyed two mocktails, both of which were made with care.

Kim L.

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance was the best! The steak melted in my mouth. The sea bass was tender and amazing.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of coming here for dinner this past weekend. Once you check in with the host, you take an elevator up to the rooftop. The restaurant sits on top of micro apartments. The waitress (wish I remembered her name) gave us a run down of the restaurants vision. She loves her job and that was obvious. She described the food very well. We had a few dishes but the most memorable was the potato! The sauce was so good. I would have licked that plate clean if I was home haha. I was a bit disappointed as they ran out of the carpaccio and I wanted to try it. I thought the drinks were okay... but I'lol be back to try again.

Yelp
Beautiful view, good food and nice atmosphere. Service is excellent. Cons: Had to wait about 15 minutes even though we had a reservation. Specifically told them we wanted to sit inside when I called to make reservation, but were seated outside. Cocktails are expensive for the amount you get in the glass. Pros: Beautiful view and upscale, edgy vibe with reasonable pricing. Excellent service and definitely friendly. The drinks tasted good. The food was pretty superb. Everything we had was flavorful, cooked correctly and came out in a timely manner. Free dessert for the birthday girl. I would absolutely try this place again.

Yelp
Stunning views; beautiful, classy, but light and fun ambiance. I went for a business dinner, and loved it so much I came back the next night for my family birthday dinner! So many great chefs and foodie folks involved: Owner Jacquee Renna (Pacifica), executive chef Mike Moritz (Mille Fleurs, Mister A's) and executive pastry chef Aly Lyng (George's at the Cove) But best of all, the food and drinks were unique and delicious. The first night, tried 3 dishes: (1) burrata and stone fruit wi/prosciutto which was wonderful; then (2) yellowfin poke - excellent, but the highlight of the night was (3) the pasta with shrimp, mussels and sea bass (they were out of clams). OMG; the seafood was incredible, pasta was so light and tender, and sauce was out of this world. For my birthday, we ordered 6 items to share: (1) focaccia - delicious; (2 ) poke again; (3) triple cream Brie wrapped in Philo, surrounded by berries and stone fruit, which was incredible; (4) Seafood pasta again, and this time it had clams and mussels - everyone loved iit; and (5) chicken - the sauce was out of this world. For dessert, had (6) the cheesecake with fabulous caramel sauce and then a complementary birthday Godino. The view on the Terrace was spectacular. The cocktails and wine were lovely too. I had the bubbly drink the first night, and the strawberry rhubarb on the second night. Had a glass of Chablis both nights - superb. My daughter had a mocktail which she said was very good as well. Overall, two amazing back-to-back evenings at Communuon.

Yelp
We had such a great time at Communion! The rooftop patio was the perfect spot for dinner and drinks, especially since we got there right at golden hour- the view was amazing. We had guests visiting from out of town. There were five of us, and we shared the lamb lollipops, hamachi crudo, Wagyu beef carpaccio & the Spanish Octopus. Everything was delicious! We also tried a few cocktails- the Ay Dios Cyrus, High Priestess, and both of their mocktails- and they were all really good. Our server was awesome, super friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. Getting in was a little tricky (we went through the coffee shop and took the elevator up). Can't wait to come back for a date night!

Yelp
I was part of a group of 4 and we all were wowed by the food we had tonight to celebrate a birthday. We had a range of dishes from peri chicken to lamb chops to steak+frites to risotto. Everything was delicious and very well seasoned, with great sauces, and large portions. Prices were very reasonable considering the portions and quality. The wine and drink list were long with good choices of wine at reasonable prices. Mixed drinks were on the high side for some. We are all foodies and have been to most of the top restaurants in San Diego and thought Communion was up there with the best of them. Service was excellent and friendly and food was paced perfectly. We had great seats on their small enclosed patio. I would not have wanted to sit inside because the noise seemed deafening when we walked through the inside dining and bar area from the elevator. Overall a very strong 5. Looking forward to a return visit.

Yelp
Came here for a dinner date with my close friend. Ambiance is amazing you walk into a dim-light hallway to a really cute courtyard. You then take an elevator upstairs and is greeted with a pink lights decorated room. The floor is mainly glass so you can enjoy the view. We were lucky to face the downtown view which was amazing on a clear night. Service was good. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and were seated at the bar since we didn't make a reservation. The bartender made us some libel non acholic drinks in the menu. There are two to chose from. Both was really refreshing and price well. $10 For Food we ordered the PEAS AND ARTICHOKES for to share. Super good very refreshing salad. I ordered the COCONUT MILK POACHED LOCAL SEABASS. This dish had me very excited but I need a bit more flavor it was very light. Being a big fan of Tom yum I expected a bit more. The Spanish octopus I did not try but looks delicious. Parking was fairly easy since I went on a Wednesday around 7 so found a spot right up front. Street parking for the most part. Will definitely be back for date night to try other dishes.

Yelp
Great views, friendly server, tasty food. Lots of gluten free options, which I appreciate. We got the masala potatoes, tartare, pork belly, and lobster risotto. The tartare was a large portion and a little overwhelming for a party of two. Would order the other things again though!

Yelp
First time here and I have to tell you, I will definitely be back. When you enter the complex, there's a hostess in front of an elevator that takes you up to the roof.. when we got to the top we were greeted by the two most pleasant people and quickly got us to our seats, which had a beautiful view of downtown The ambience was beautiful, classy and clean. With not a bad seat in the house and there's even an outside option which I will try next time.. We started off our meal with the Crudo and the carpaccio which was to die for and I highly recommend recommended . We also shared the lamb lollipops that had a prayer of parsnips under it.. then we finished our meal with the H duck, which was probably the best duck I have ever had. We finished with a dessert. I can't even remember what it was called, but it said on this light fluffy cake with vanilla bean ice cream and topped with the most delicious salted plantain chips. I'm only sad. I didn't take more pictures of the food. . It's definitely quality food and the weights were very attentive. I'm a very happy customer

Yelp
Communion came up in my feed as a hot new restaurant, and as a Yelp Elite, of course I had to visit! We came for a special occasion so that made it even better, and the experience exceeded my expectations. I noted two unique things about this restaurant, the first being its location on the rooftop of The Sasan apartment building. There is a coffee shop on the bottom floor and you enter into the shared seating area that is a nice open-air space and check in at the host stand. From there you are escorted up the elevator into a lovely and lively space with a large central bar and seating around the sides along with an outside dining area. I say lively because it was a bit loud considering it was almost full and the space seems to trap sounds. I must also mention the views - excellent views of downtown and the water seen through the floor to ceiling windows. Note that some seating is right up against the window and probably isn't the best for those afraid of heights. The second is the decor and theme. As the name suggests, it makes you feel like you are in church about to take communion. There are subtle touches of a cathedral (definitely check out the bathrooms) along with the names of menu items, as you'll see from my list of dishes ordered: COCKTAILS Angel's redemption is probably the best bourbon and passion fruit drink I've ever had. It was so smooth and well-blended, highly recommend if you like bourbon. Supreme Sacrifice used mezcal, ancho reyes and a charred corn husk to give a fabulously smokey taste along with hints of pineapple. FOOD Spanish octopus arrived with one large tentacle on top and additional pieces below along with squid ink risotto. This was probably my favorite dish since the octopus was cooked just right with a perfectly crispy outside and went oh so well with the squid ink risotto. Linguini & Clams had a good flavor to the sauce however was slightly disappointed that there were only 4 clams. Coconut milk poached local seabass to round off the seafood feast. Besides the fact that I love seabass, it came in a tom yum broth with lots of other flavors that went so well together. The fish sat atop bok chow and had mushrooms and tomatoes in the broth. DESSERT Since it was a special occasion, the staff presented us with a complimentary dessert which I believe was The Ritual warm flourless chocolate tart. It was a nice ending to our meal. My last two notes are about their wonderful hospitality starting from the host stand to the wait staff. Our waiter in particular was very personable and really added to our experience. Lastly, there is only street parking available, however I saw quite a few spots in the adjacent neighborhood.

Yelp
I came here for to celebrate my friend's birthday and all I have to say is we were impressed! Every dish we had was a solid 10/10. Even the dessert that I keep thinking about days later, was the best dessert I've had. We like to do family style when we order and we ordered the chaat masala potatoes, sage hill tomato and strawberry salad, dolmeh eggplant, & steak frites. Everything we ordered was truly amazing. I would say my top favorites were the chaat masala potatoes and the steak frites. In addition to our main dishes, The three of us ordered the Aurora Borealis mocktail that was delicious! For dessert we had the sticky apple cake and I believe the complimentary birthday dessert was the ritual. Both were flavorful and different than any dessert I've had, but, if you love apple pie...you HAVE to get the sticky apple cake. I honestly asked for a dessert refill jokingly, but would have taken it in a heartbeat if that was possible. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We had to move back our reservation by an hour since our party was running late and they were so kind to make the changes for us. They also called to mention concerns of the cold outside since it was starting to get windy and rainy, but they have heaters and rolling blinds that kept us wam and dry. The views are truly amazing from their patio dining. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I am looking forward to dining here again! :)

Yelp
I came here for my birthday after seeing beautiful pictures on Yelp and it was such a great choice to make! The restaurant is beautifully set up for inside and outside. The views are everywhere so anywhere you sit will be fine! We ordered the steak and frites, eggplant dish, potatoes dish. For dessert we ordered the sticky apple cake and for my birthday they brought out a chocolate dessert. Everything was soooo good! I would absolutely order every dish again! The service was so kind and delightful! The food came out fast and fresh. Sydney did a great job helping us choose our plates and was so nice turning off and on the heater for us because we sat outside. Jackie the owner came up and checked in on us too! It was so nice talking to her. It was a successful birthday and can't wait to tell more people about Communion!

Yelp
Yummy food and drinks, cool views, vibey ambiance. Kind friendly service. Almost a speakeasy feel cuz it's up the elevator. The downstairs courtyard is a fun entrance. The whole building is a huge vibe. It's definitely pleasant to behold. The views around the city, from the top floor where the restaurant is, are really satisfying. A great date night!

Yelp
I'm not sure what the hype is but we felt our food was mediocre. Street parking so arrive a little early to find parking. The ambiance is beautiful. The elevator ride up is interesting. It's very dimly lit but each table has its own portable lamp. It's very loud so I wouldn't come here on a first date because you'll barely be able to hear each other speak. There are heat lamps on the outside patio that if it had been turned down just one notch, would've been the perfect temperature. The view was okay. We received complimentary champagne and dessert for our anniversary which were delicious and a nice touch. Our waters were refilled often. Cocktails were unique and delicious. Our server Sydney was very nice and knowledgeable of the menu. We had the hamachi crudo which was just okay. It was missing something for that extra kick of flavor but I liked the grapefruit served on top. The focaccia bread was crispy and fluffy. It had a great texture, but it lacked flavor. The steak frites were good but we're not a fan of pre-sliced steaks. However, the cook and flavor were perfect! The fries had a nice flavor but it was a little over seasoned. The chocolate dessert was surprisingly really good and the perfect and ending to our meal, but it could've been without the olive oil. Overall, a nice dining experience but nothing wow'd us. We won't be returning but if you're in the area, definitely stop by for some cocktails!

Yelp
So good! Such a good experience. Most of the drinks were good. I loved how this place was decorated. My chicken was cooked perfectly. Loved the peri peri cream sauce. Loved the pork belly.

Yelp
Amazing spot for dinner with friends or date night. The view is great and so is the food. I recently went for a birthday celebration and everything was amazing. The drinks, the food and the service. The steak was cooler to perfection, the focaccia bread delightful, and the cocktails were refreshing and delicious.

Yelp
The food was amazing! My favorite was the Bree, it had a nice crispy outside and a gooey inside. The lamb chops were also good, with an extraordinary flavor. The Service was good. Attentive was pretty good, they filled our water fast. The ambiance is was amazing! It had a very nice view. Although, it was very loud inside.

Yelp
Communion is the other half of the two new establishments that have recently debuted inside The Sasan in Mission Hills. It's located on the eighth floor of the pink building with a beautiful rooftop view of the area. I do hope they can expand their hours beyond dinner because unless you show up between 4 and 5 pm, the scenery is greatly diminished due to the early sunset at this time of the year. I found parking to be challenging because there were not enough nearby curbside spaces to support all of the businesses close to this busy intersection of the neighborhood. There was a check-in stand at the ground level near the elevator. The host would then communicate to their counterpart upstairs that a party would be arriving. As soon as you exited the elevator, the pink and purple lighting around the central bar was immediately in front of you. The entire floor was enclosed with ground to ceiling windows so I can only imagine how illuminated it gets during the daytime. Behind the bar area was another dining room with tables that could seat larger groups and a patio. I sat at the bar where there were close to two dozen spots. The menu was made up of about sixteen different small plates and entrees featuring a range of global offerings. My two choices were the Colorado Lamb Lollipops and the Dry Aged Duck Breast. The former came as two Frenched lamb chops crusted with zaatar and served with curry yogurt, figs, grapes, and frisee. The medium rare cooked meat was beautifully plated. The yogurt provided a cool contrast to the lamb flavor. The duck breast was thinly sliced into at least a dozen pieces and was served with a cassis reduction, broccolini, cippolini onion, and parsnip. It was the most generous serving of duck I have ever received for the price I paid. The dry aged meat was cooked perfectly, and the sweetness of the blackcurrant sauce paired nicely. I would certainly order this entree again, especially when there are upscale eateries that charge 50% more for duck breast and provide a smaller portion size. If Communion would open for brunch/lunch and find a way to improve the parking situation, then this place could be a five-star experience.

Yelp
Communion, rooftop restaurant and bar, is serving elevated, seasonal, coastal-region cuisine in an elevated setting. AMBIANCE An eight-story elevator ride from the Sasan building atrium courtyard to the rooftop leads to a warm candle-lit entrance that opens to a high-top bar, draped overhead with ceiling fabrics, between expansive floor to ceiling glazing, and backlit in shades of pink and purple mirroring the pink tiled sassan building it's situated in. The exterior covered patio a breath of fresh air and is just past the shadow boxes filled with an artistic array of blue, red, and yellow monarch butterflies. Aesop soap and lotion amenities elevates the restroom sink. SERVICE Staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. DIRECT COCKTAILS 5/5 SHAKI: bimini coconut gin (extra virgin coconut oil infusion is delightfully pronounced with a tinge of alpine from the juniper gin), dolin blanc vermouth (sweet, floral), cocchi americano (fruity, floral, bittersweet), luxardo Dittel bianco (bittersweet citrusy herbal aperitif - wormwood/absinthe like), pandan and coconut infusion (tropical), lime leaf tincture™ (aromatic citrus) 4/5 ETERNAL PATH: storyhouse rye, vanilla cherry infused campari, carpano antica sweet vermouth, cherry vanilla bark bitters. Like an old fashioned but sweeter and more bitter. FOOD 5/5 ESCONDIDO OYSTER MUSHROOMS: Parmesan polenta whipped fromage blanc - this is an irresistibly cheesy, creamy polenta with crunchy bits. The oyster mushrooms are savory, flavorful, with perfectly pan-seared crisp edges - the chef's technique is on point. 4.5/5 COLORADO LAMB LOLLIPOPS: Smoky flavorful zaatar crust, creamy and aromatic vadouvan curry yogurt, figs (server noted they'd bring a side of figs after I noted it's missing, but it wasn't fruitful), fresh grapes, fresh crisp frisee

Yelp
We dined on the terrace which had beautiful city views. Our friend who is a little scared of heights sat in the chair furthest from the edge. They offer a wide variety of pates using different ingredients with a nice selection of vegetarian options. Our server Daniel was very hospitable and we enjoyed our delicious visit.

Yelp
Saw photos of Communion on instagram and made reservations for rooftop dining at sunset so we can enjoy the view. Love the colors and clean aesthetics of the restaurant and the swirling fabric ceiling design. The views can be seen from both sides of the restaurant with a large bar in the middle. The covered patio provides views of downtown and Point Loma but sunscreen and sunglasses may be needed. Andrew was our server, and he did an excellent job explaining the menu and accommodating our special requests. The octopus on squid ink risotto was very flavorful, but it was smaller than expected. The roasted pork was generously proportioned. The Seabass in Tom Yum broth was light and delicious. But other Yelp reviewers are correct that dishes and drinks are pricey. Nice place for special occasions.

Yelp
Beautiful decor, wonderful views of the city skyline and phenomenal dishes! Super friendly service. We loved all our dishes and the dessert were both unique and exceptional in taste, texture and flavors. We already have another reservation!

Yelp
On a random Wednesday night, we really wanted to grab a cocktail, so we headed to Paradis since it's been on our radar to check out. However, upon arrival, we realized that it was closed for a special event.. and that special event happened to be the grand opening of their newest fine dining restaurant, Communion!! When driving to the building, we also noticed a stunning rooftop area that looked to be new, which already intrigued us. We quickly found out from the hostess that the rooftop was in fact where Communion was, so that got us really excited (especially because from my knowledge, I don't think there's any rooftop restaurants or bars in Mission Hills.. so this might be the first?). The restaurant's interior is beautiful (love the intricate ceiling art) and there's outside seating, as well as inside seating. We sat at the bar and I love how spacious the bar table tops are. You also get a direct view of Downtown SD from the rooftop establishment, which is wonderful. Loved that the grand opening had a live harp player too - it definitely enhanced the experience! The dishes & cocktails here are seriously on point! Although a bit on the pricier end, it is a rooftop restaurant/bar after all, so you gotta remember you're paying not only for the high quality food & beverages, you are also paying for the great service & views. We thought the cocktails were crafty & well done, & I really enjoyed the Yama's Reign & the Shakiti! I am a fan of the little details incorporated into the presentation of the cocktails. Foodwise, we got the Olive Oil Focaccia Bread, Local Yellowtail, Spanish Octopus, the Linguini & Clams, & the Quince Vacherin dessert. Okay, I'm a simple gal, so wow that bread honestly really impressed me. It was so good & a great start to the meal! Octopus dishes are either a hit or miss for me usually, but I thought it was delicious & really rich in flavor, as it packed the punch with the squid ink risotto. I liked how for the yellowtail dish, the tomatoes were cold too, which helped balance the more hearty linguini & clams dish (that linguini sauce is crazy in a good way by the way). The dessert had a lot of textures & flavors too, which I am a big fan of. Here I go, accidentally writing yet another novel about a restaurant I really enjoyed, but it's hard not to when the experience was a great one! Love the new addition to the neighborhood & thank you to Randy for being a really great server & bartender as well :)

Yelp
I had very high hopes and very low expectations for this beautiful space on top of the "pink building." Time to set that bar higher because everything was better than I imagined. The views were spectacular. The wine list great. The food fresh. The service attentive. To start, we had the yellowtail, the pea and artichoke salad and the octopus. The yellow tail, while fresh, lacked flavor. It was the only miss of the night. A little citrus would have freshened it up. The octopus and the squid ink risotto were also great. But the star of the whole night was the artichoke salad. That pea humus is to die for. For our mains, we had the sea bass in coconut sauce, the pork rack and the lamb lollipops. All were delicious. But the lamb at $25 for two pieces was the best. I would have liked to grab a piece of the carrot cake downstairs but it was closed. I'll be back to this neighborhood gem soon!

Yelp
My wife and I visited this rooftop restraint in mission hills last week. We were glad we did. The service was excellent, the ambiance is excellent, the food slightly elevated but as flavorful as we hoped. We had the following items. HOUSEMADE FOCCACIA LOCAL YELLOWTAIL CRUDO WAYGU BEEF CARPACCIO COCONUT MILK POACHED LOCAL SEABASS THE RITUAL DESSERT All items were as expected but the Tom Yum broth that the sea bass comes with was excellent! They missed mark (in our opinion) on the sea bass itself. It was overcooked and under seasoned. The wine selection is varied but limited. We will definitely be back to explore more items on this exciting menu.

Yelp
So glad we tried this new restaurant. It is on the roof of the pink Sasan building. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. The decor is very neutral and the dishes were eclectic. We sat outside so we could enjoy the view. It is only 8 stories but you could see everything. Our server was great. He was attentive and always made sure we had water. Seems so simple but not every place does this. The food was good. I liked some items more than others but the presentation was great on all dishes. It is a sharing menu which I love cuz we like trying lots of different things. I put our order below. Focaccia- light and tasty. The soft butter was so good too. Yellowtail- very fresh and nice portion though lacked a bit of flavor. Mushrooms and polenta- favorite dish. The polenta was creamy and the mushrooms were buttery and tasty. Beef tartar- very good and flavorful. The pieces of gerkin gave it such a tart yummy profile. The 4 big pieces of bread were toasted and buttery too. Sea bass- the broth was our favorite! I could have eaten a huge bowl of it! The sea bass was good but may have been a bit over cooked as it was chewy. Flavor was good though. We will totally return. If you want great views, a nice vibe, good food (reasonable prices) and great service, make a reservation.

Yelp
From exiting the elevator (to stunning views) all the way to dessert, this experience was amazing. Our server, Elvija, was so friendly and helpful. Fancy cocktails to start. I had the Maine Lobster risotto, and my girlfriend had the catch of the day (Sea Bass). All the flavors were out of this world. We finished off with the sticky apple cake (I may have that name wrong). Absolutely delightful. I can't wait to go back on a non-cloudy day to take in more of the views.

Yelp
The atmosphere is lovely and the food very good. The menu is diverse and the views are spectacular. They weren't busy on Wednesday evening and yet the service was slow and not especially hospitable. There were minor inaccuracies in our orders. OK, let's continue our conversation about surcharges. Communion's is 5% to rent their table. Let me be clear: I will gladly pay 5% more to order food and drink but it is not my responsibility as your patron to pay your server's and staff's wages. THAT'S YOURS, if you own a restaurant. If you can't take full responsibility for doing that, you need not own a restaurant. I will no longer be subsidizing your cost of doing business. It's your responsibility to pay livable wages. As a result, I will be having conversations with on-duty managers about this issue and requesting that surcharges be removed. There's no service or product associated with the surcharges. If the charges are not removed, I will deduct them from my tip. I won't include them in my bill's total and tip on an amount that includes nothing I received.

Yelp
Came here a couple weeks back with a friend I haven't seen in a while without a reservation early on a Friday night and were able to be seated at the bar right away. The staff was more than friendly, helped up pick out drinks and gave us plenty of time to order. The restaurant itself is gorgeous! The decor, the seating, the views! All of it was so well done and thought out perfectly. Now the food on the other hand--- both of us found it lack luster. We ordered a steak tartare which both of us have had our fair shares of at many restaurants around the city. We found it flavorless and could have done without. I showed it to another friend of mine who was a head chef for many years in Chicago and moved to San Diego as a General Manager for a Consortium Holdings restaurant and she immediately asked why did the meat look oxidized. We split an entree which I can't remember what it was exactly-whatever the eggplant dish was with ground beef and chickpeas. While the chickpeas, beef and sauce tasted great- the eggplant which is suppose to be the start of the dish was undercooked and difficult to chew. For something named after the ingredient I at least expected the eggplant to be the star of the show. We decided to skip on desert as the price of everything was already up there in the mid hundred realm for our couple of drinks and food. All in all- a beautiful restaurant but poor food. Much like my thoughts about all of consortiums properties- this seems like another restaurant group which spends lots of money on the interior design and the food is just an after thought. If you're coming for drinks, you'll love it. If yoye here for aesthetics, this is your place. If you're a foodie coming for a good meal you should check another restaurant.

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing and I already can't wait wit to go back. The food is so good!! My friends and I wanted to try a little bit everything. We had the peach burrata, yellowfin tuna, truffle pasta and teriyaki pork belly as appetizers. I'm not joking- everything was good. I especially loved the fresh peaches and the pork belly. For entrees, we tried the lanolin lollipops, ribeye and lobster risotto. Wow! I want to go back to enjoy some of those dishes again before they change the menu. My only complaint is their way of taking orders. They want you to order everything at once. That doesn't typically work for my friends and I. We like to enjoy our time together and get caught talking. I like to keep ordering as I go. I know that they're not the only place that does this. Our waiter let us split up the order because we had been waiting a while for our champagne. The only problem was it took him forever to come back and take our order for entrees. I think it's because they're supposed to take our order all at once, but also the poor guy had 90% of the tables inside! The only reason I took a star off because it seems like a management problem. Nonetheless I will be back!

Yelp
Had a great dinner at communion. Menu is interesting and at first it is hard to decide but Everything we chose was delicious, great wine selection. Decorations is nicely done, I really liked the inside. Outside is simple but the view is gorgeous. Services could be better. I think they were too busy and hard to keep up with all tables.
