Rooftop Restaurant and Cocktail Bar Communion Opens in Mission Hills | Eater San Diego

"Arriving Thursday, November 21, this eighth-floor rooftop atop the eye-catching Sasan building in Mission Hills spans 120 seats across a glass-enclosed dining room and heated patio and serves as the companion piece to Paradis, the sidewalk cafe by day and pintxos bar by night that opened earlier this month. Owner Jacquee Renna (La Quinta Cliffhouse, Pacifica Seafood) has entrusted executive chef Mike Moritz, a vet of foundational spots like Mille Fleurs and Mister A’s, with a global dinner menu that includes triple-cream brie baked in filo dough and served with lingonberry jam, seasonal fruits, and local sage flour honey; a roasted beet “filet” with vegan bordelaise sauce; and dry-aged duck breast in a cassis reduction with parsnip, broccolini, cippolini onion. George’s at the Cove alum Aly Lyng does double duty as the executive pastry chef for both establishments, baking bread and pastries for Paradis while whipping up desserts at the rooftop, such as a vanilla bean Basque cheesecake with salted caramel and a warm flourless chocolate tart paired with espresso ice cream. The bar program offers cocktails like Yama’s Reign, made with Japanese gin, yuzu liqueur, kiwi cucumber syrup, furikake tincture, lime, and sesame, and the Eternal Path, a mix of rye, vanilla and cherry-infused Campari, sweet vermouth, and cherry bark vanilla bitters." - Candice Woo

Enjoyed a beautiful sunset and view of downtown sitting on the terrace (watching the planes fly in was neat). Went for a special occasion for a birthday and the service, drinks and food were all great! Staff was friendly and attentive and since we got there at 5:15 my wine was very reasonably priced for happy hour. I am vegan and had no issue eating here. Delicious brussel sprouts and kale salad starters as well as the beet steak entree - I ate every bite! My partner enjoyed his chicken entree - said it was cooked perfectly. All ingredients were super fresh and healthy. We appreciated the happy birthday placard at our table and got some excellent sunset photos. Check them out!

Celebrated my 17th wedding anniversary on Saturday 11/15 and just wow! the view was gorgeous even though it was raining a bit. Daniel was our server and he was just so knowledgeable and great. He knew the answers to all our questions and recommended a few things on the menu for us to try. I made a mistake on a drink order and he was so accommodating and kind about it. Daniel you are amazing! you made our night perfect! My favorite server ever! Had the warm rosemary rolls and they were so good. Herby but not overwhelming and they just melt in your mouth with the butter they serve along side them. The oysters we got as an appetizer were fresh and delicious. Order the patatas bravas and you will not be disappointed. As for main dishes, my hubby got the ribeye with potatoes and vegetables and I ordered the coconut milk poached seabass. Both were made to perfection, nothing to critique there. Drink wise we got the Trouble in Paradise, Divine Garden and Fleeting Flowers. Strong but not overpowering in alcohol taste, they're meant to be be sipped and savored, so enjoy every drop. We received a complimentary dessert for our anniversary which was a sweet addition (pun totally intended ^_^). We also decided to order the Butterscotch mousse souflee and it was just the right amount of sweet and smooth texture you would expect from a mousse dessert. If you haven't came here it's a great place, yes a bit pricey, but worth every bit of it. Don't deny yourself this experience! We'll definitely be back! On a side note, the menu changes often so the menus you see here on Google are probably not what's on the menu for the day you decide to visit.

My friends and I came for HH on a Wednesday afternoon! We did make reservations and were seated right away. HH is only at the bar or outside standing area fyi. Surprisingly, I found parking fairly easy on the Main Street. The views are absolutely beautiful from the restaurant and the little patio is so cute when you first walk in. The service was fantastic and everyone was so welcoming and nice. The cocktails and appetizers were delicious! Definitely would come back again. Food/cocktail review: Dealers choice: (4/5) We tried two different variations and they were pretty tasty! The bartender made one with a mocha (made in house) that I wasn’t a huge fan of but it was still yummy! Gold rush: (5/5) I loved it! Super refreshing and balanced. Fried artichokes: (3.5/5) These were just OK. The batter was good but something was off with the artichoke, can’t put my finger on it. It wasn’t our favorite. Rosemary bread rolls: (5/5) YUMMM. They were so soft and flavorful. Delicious with the butter. We ended up ordering 2 of them. It only comes with 2 rolls. Chicken skewer: (3.5/5) These had potential but they were really dry. It is only a single skewer, so we ordered 2 to share among the 3 of us. Pork wings: (5/5) These were my favorite. They have great flavor and were tender! The sauce was delicious. Great portion for sharing. Pasta salad: (4/5) This dish was just OK. I’m not a huge fan of olives and I felt like it had olive juice flavor. But overall, refreshing and flavorful. French fries: (5/5) I really enjoyed these with the aioli. They were perfectly crisp and seasoned! I would order again.

We came here to try their San Diego restaurant week menu. The view from this place is nice, but it was busy and even out on the varanda it was very loud. Though the decor was nice. The staff was friendly but didn't stop by very often. The food was hot or miss. The tomato salad was very small and was quite simple. Though the tomatoes themselves were good flavor. The charcuterie was missing several ingredients that were listed on the menu like avocado, prosciutto and cherries. They ran out of the chicken dish one of my friends wrote and apologized, offering us complimentary bread to compensate for our trouble. This was a nice gesture except they didn't actually bring it until we asked about it much later. I had the fresh catch (which was sea bass) in Tom Tom broth. It was pretty bland with the fish not really adding much to the meal. The truffle pasta however was rich and delicious. And my friends had good things to say about the yellow fun like appetizer. The desserts were also great. I had a mango Panna Cotta and my wife had basque cheesecake. Of the two the cheesecake was the star and in not really a big cheesecake lover. Overall, a fun evening but probably wouldn't come back here given the price to value we had. Though perhaps on a less busy night the experience would have been better

Google
This place is top notch all the way! From the incredible staff (everyone) to the epic dishes, because to say delicious doesn't do them justice. We spent our anniversary here this evening and were treated like GOLD! WoW, just WoW!!! I HIGHLY recommend. I give them a 10 across the board!!!

Google
My husband was over the moon with the half-chicken cooked in spices in a sauce of corn and beans. I highly recommend the stone fruit (peaches & cherries) with stretchy burrata cheese in the center of the plate, and a good dose of black pepper. It is enough for 2 to share. I had the lamb lollipops. Sadly, it is 3 thin cuts of lamb loin chops with about 50% bone & fat. It is seasoned really well & grilled to perfection, medium-rare. Tasty, but it’s not going to make a meal on its own. Great views from this top floor restaurant of a new, pink condominium in Mission Hills.

Google
Such an upscale atmosphere with stellar service! We loved the lamb lollipops, lobster risotto (out-of-this-world amazing!!), and coconut milk sea bass. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience with friendly, attentive service and beautiful views of San Diego!

Google
Communion has not relied solely on the fantastic view to create a special place. My husband and I came for brunch on Sunday to check out the view we had heard so much about, and found the food to be reasonably priced and thoughtfully prepared and the service very attentive. The unique decor creates a special ambiance. What a treasure! Our next goal it to check out happy hour!

Yelp
First time patron. On a Wednesday night. Very trendy atmosphere. However I don't think I would go back. Our party of 5 with a reservation was sat at a small 4 person table. There were many empty tables when we arrived and when we left so it was possible to give us a little more room. We had a table of 4 loud women to our right and a table of 6 loud women to our left. Too noisy overall. Service was slow. Food was slow. No one asked if we wanted another drink. The only positive was the food was good. Everyone in our party enjoyed their entree. I doubt I will go back.

Yelp
Dined here on Saturday evening during restaurant week. The restaurant in is gorgeous and the views are great. I could only get a reservation for the main dining room but would have preferred the terrace for the quieter atmosphere. I started with the burrata and stone fruit salad. It was tasty and I liked the freshness the mint provided. While I did really enjoy this, this was probably the least special course of the meal and considering I left very, very full would probably skip this next time. My husband ordered th crudo and enjoyed it (I don't eat seafood so can't comment). For mains I had the filet which was an upcharge but worth it. It was flavorful and tender and served with delicious mashed potatoes. I asked for medium well and it was a bit under so if you are torn between temps I might suggest picking the higher of the two. I generally like my filet between medium and medium well so it worked out well for me. My husband ordered the tom yum sea bass and was a bit disappointed that the fish was so soupy but the fish was well prepared. We also added on the yeast rolls with butter which were divine! Desserts were smaller portions which we were thankful for because we were so full. I had the guava panna cotta while my husband had the cheesecake . Both were delicious. In an ideal world I would have had the panna cotta with a side of the sailted caramel sauce from the cheesecake. Three courses each was a bit much, if we had to do it again we probably would have done 2-3 appetizers, split a main, and 1-2 desserts. Service was friendly and attentive., a great spot to celebrate a special occasion.

Yelp
I had been looking forward to dining at Communion for several weeks. After reading so many glowing online reviews, I was genuinely excited to experience the food for myself. The venue is beautiful--the views of the city are fantastic, and the service was attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired. Our group followed the server's recommendation to order several dishes for sharing. While portion sizes were fair, the flavors and execution were disappointingly average. Below are my ratings for each item (on a 1-5 scale, with 2.5 being average--meaning the dish reflects what I could reasonably make myself at home). Dinner rolls and butter -- 2/5 The rolls seemed prepackaged and weren't served warm. The chive butter was tasty, but overall, the rolls reminded me of a ready-to-eat package from Ralph's. Kale salad -- 2/5 Most of the kale leaves still had long stems, and the salad was lightly dressed with vinaigrette and tiny red pepper slices. It tasted almost identical to a grocery store prepackaged salad. Truffle pasta -- 5/5 Outstanding. Generous with the truffle and served piping hot--the only truly hot dish of the night. I loved it. Stuffed eggplant entrée -- 3/5 Creative and flavorful. A solid dish with good balance and presentation. Lamb lollipops - 4/5 Tasty. I ordered medium well and it came out very medium. It was warm not hot. There was a small amount of sauce and I wish I asked for an extra side Brussels sprouts -- 2/5 These felt like something I'd make on a weeknight--simply tossed in oil, charred, and served with bits of lard. They arrived warm, not hot. A creamy base, sprinkle of cheese, or toasted breadcrumbs could have elevated the dish. Baked Brie We ordered it, but unfortunately, they had run out. Final thoughts: Go for the ambiance--it's lovely. Stay for the views and atmosphere. But if you're seeking memorable food, you might want to eat elsewhere.

Yelp
We came to meet friends who were already seated at the bar while waiting for our table. The hostess encouraged us to go join them, but when we got there, there weren't enough seats, so we stood behind them as we waited for service. We stood there for quite some time without any acknowledgment. When the female bartender finally approached, instead of asking how she could help, she rudely told our friends to close out their tab, refused to let us order drinks to take to our table, and reminded us there was "no standing room" -even though no one was behind us. Her tone was dismissive and unprofessional-not what you'd expect from a restaurant at this price point. Once seated, the service didn't improve much. It was slow and impersonal, and the food was hit or miss. We started with the crusted watermelon salad, steak tartare, pork belly, and patatas bravas-the tartare was the only standout. For entrees, we had the short rib, shrimp pasta, lobster risotto, and lamb lollipops. The short rib was flavorful but salty, the pasta was drowning in sauce and way overcooked, the risotto was just okay, and the lamb was a bit tough. Cocktails were good, but overall, the experience didn't justify the price. This feels like a place that relies heavily on its view and atmosphere to draw people in rather than its food or service to bring them back. Hard to say if I'd return.

Yelp
This is an interesting review. I gave it a 4 stars not because anything in particular was fantastic. I think it's a four star because everything was just good. Nothing wowed me but nothing about the experience be it the food, drinks, view, wait staff, elevator ride, energy in the place etc. was terrible. Because they did nothing wrong. I feel like it's four stars for me. We came during restaurant week. When you enter, you pass by a coffee shop and a patio. Look for the elevator to your right to go up to the restaurant. You're immediately greeted with the front of house staff. We didn't have reservations so we had to sit at the bar. The bartenders were semi busy. It was a full house but they weren't necessarily running around fulfilling orders left and right. Bar seating was super comfy. It was a U shape. I ordered off the regular menu and they ordered from the pre set menu. We ordered the following: Lamb lollipop which had a zaatar crust, vadouvan curry yogurt, frisee, and mustard vinaigrette. It cost 36 dollars. It was beautifully presented. Flavor was somewhat there. You can taste it was well salted but I was searching for more than just salt and I couldn't quite name what seasoning was used if any. The crust was nice. But dont expect a crunch. About 5 lollipops came in it. Coconut Milk Poached Fresh Catch which was served in tom yum broth, with tomatos, mushrooms, chili oil, and coriander. It's gluten free. It was light and easy on the stomach. If you're a hungry person, it won't fill you up but you'll be delighted with the broth and the mushrooms. Visually its a pretty dish. Lots of color. Teriyaki Glazed Pork Belly as an appetizer with pickled zucchini & red onion, and topped with sesame seeds for 26 bucks. You have a sweet and savory dish here. If it's one way or the other, you have the pickled zucchini to help cut the taste for you. Its a tasting rather than a small plate in my opinion. But probably my fav dish of the night. POG Panna Cotta (passionfruit, orange, guava) was served in a cute little dish. The combo of tart with sweet with creamy was a refreshing end to the meal. Mussels Escabeche was a super pleasant dish. The aromas was intoxicating. The basil, tomato, and confit garlic were great. For 28 dollars it was a little steep but for good dishes, you have to pay a good price. Its served with toasted focaccia bread. Escabeche is a broth / marinade. No parking lot so we parked on the street. It was late Sunday evening so we found one right in front of the place. Cocktails are grouped together between refreshing (light, crisp, citrusy) and direct (spirit forward, strong, bold).

Yelp
I came here with a large group and we had a fun dining experience. It's located on top of a building which offers great views of the San Diego coast facing west and on the east side you have the hills in the distance. The venue is festive and friendly. They are known for excellent cocktails and food options. We had a great time and highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Place has been on our list for some time now and boy am I glad we finally made it here! Amazing views from this rooftop spot! Cool modern bar area and lots of nice patio seating as well. Standouts were probably all of the delicious cocktails, the steak tartare, and the sea bass. Dessert was quite delicious as well. Definitely a bit pricier and a tougher area for parking but overall a great date night spot with great service. Solid cocktail offerings and seemingly a solid happy hour selection as well which we'll definitely be back to check out!

Yelp
Vibes and views are 5/5 but the food was very, very disappointing. We went their for our anniversary on a Tues. When we got their they had a little table marker to let our servers know it was our anniversary which was nice. We reserved on the terrace and the view was sooo nice. Highly recommend. For food we got the heirloom tomato salad, the chaat potatoes, the tom yum soup and the POG panna Cotta for dessert. The tomatoes were not good. All different levels of ripeness. The flavor was so mild for being heirloom. And the sauce they had with it tasted fishy to me. If you've had chaat before from Indian restaurants, don't order it here. This was a super sad interpretation. The potatoes were nice and crispy and thinly sliced which was different. But all the flavors paled in comparison to what you would expect for chaat. They had a chutney which had good flavor. But it felt like the dish had just chutney and yogurt. The yogurt was like a thick, plain Greek yogurt that was on the bottom of the dish. The tom yum soup was also a much more toned down version of the original Thai version. They also had it with Opa instead of sea bass which we didn't like since the fish ended up being much firmer and didn't soak up the sauce as much. They also put a sweet coconut cream on top of the fish that felt weird to me. Dessert was fine but nothing to write home about. At the end of our meal they gave us small, complimentary champagne which was a nice touch. Overall we would not go back for food. Maybe for happy hour or drinks.

Yelp
Dinner is spectacular. The portions are on the lighter side but you can order a few items and share. The ambiance makes you feel like you're somewhere special. It's a perfect place for date night. You'd be able to get an amazing view of the sunset. Getting reservations around that time can be difficult so keep that in mind.

Yelp
What an amazing place! From the views to the vibes, communion cannot be beat! Sitting at the bar, you get the most incredible views of all of San Diego, but you also get views of your bartenders making specialty cocktails. I had Angel as my Mixology master and he was incredible. I can't say enough about him. The gimlet was delicious and the pork wings were to die for!
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
The views are gorgeous. The drinks during happy hour are decent. The fries perfectly crispy and the sioli simply delicious. Cauliflower bites crispy and flavorful. The pork wings were really tender and flavorful. The parker rolls with that butter simply amazing.

Yelp
Wow! Can we start with the service first?! We were greeted so warmly (and we didn't have a reservation for a Saturday night.) I have a service dog and they were over-the-moon accumulating for us. This has never happened before and we are so grateful for their heartfelt hospitality. Our server, Sydney, was top tier. Just lived her. The food? Omg. It was so good I forgot to take photographs! I had the potatoes. Get the potatoes. I would go there just for the potatoes. They are so savory, covered in all sorts of magic and tamarind sauce and jalapenos and cilantro. I'm craving them right now. I also got the crusted watermelon that had a Japanese flavor fest. And it looked gorgeous. My friend Han the lamb chops and left nothing in his plate. We had the Cherry dessert ... beyond delicious. The view. I mean, I'd come here just for the service and the food! But add the view?! This is a perfect place to fine for any reason or no reason at all. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This place is so cute and has amazing of views of SD! There are options to sit inside or on the patio, no matter where you sit there will be a great view of the city. The restaurant takes walk ins, but it's advisable to make reservations as the venue gets packed quickly. My friend and I arrived at open, and the restaurant was packed within thirty minutes. My friend and I had a celebratory dinner and ordered multiple dishes. All the food was great except for the dessert which I wasn't a fan of, but at least I tried it! We had the local yellowfin tuna (poke), seafood campanelle, and a complimentary birthday dessert made of chocolate breadcrumbs (?) and topped with whipped cream. The star of the meal was the seafood campanelle. The seafood in the dish was so fresh it tasted as if it was just caught in the last few minutes! Overall, great vibe here and definitely a great place to chill with good company.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour & I was amazed by the beautiful rooftop decor and views. The hostess was so friendly and sweet, she was able to accommodate my friend and me as a walk-in during happy hour. I had the dealers choice and the fried Spanish artichokes. Both were delicious, and enjoying them with the view was even better. Parking was tricky since I came on a weekend during peak dinner time, but it was a manageable hassle, & totally worth the experience.

Yelp
Loved trying this place out in Mission Hills! Parking is street only, so give yourself time to park before your reservation. The views were lovely and the decor was cute and elegant. The seating hostess was dismissive, but our waiter was amazing! Our waiter was attentive and great at explaining the menu since it was our first time. We enjoyed everything we ordered, except the complimentary birthday dessert; it tasted like dirt. The bathrooms were also nice, loved the theme! I would recommend coming here for date night or girls night, very cute!

Yelp
First off, the views from this place are spectacular. Loved the outdoor balcony area that has a view of downtown, the ocean, and the airport- perfect for plane spotting. Really cute central bar area and decor, great for date night, happy hour, or brunch. Service was wonderful- friendly, attentive, and the staff really work as a great team to provide a seamless service. Now let's get into the cocktails and food. **Cocktails** -Sadie Hawkins: I hit the ground running with their Old Fashion, with hints of Cherry Soda. Def a heavy hitter and a sipper. -Echo Chamber: Japanese Whiskey Highball; refreshing and easier to gulp down; could order a couple of these -Smoke in the Grass: Mezcal, Lemongrass and Calamansi with a bright green hue. Fun to look at as it is to drink -Ay Dios: Tequila and Hibiscus, raspberry and Aleppo salt **Food** Wanted to try a few things and meant to be shared. Place all the orders in and they course it out nicely for you. -Foccaccia: a rec from a friend, but thought it was alright. Lots of other good options, though. -Local Yellowfin Tuna: Tuna two ways- Poke and Spicy Tuna served with rice and fresh, crisp taro chips; would order again -Steak Tartare: delicious and served with fresh, well-seasoned chicharon (with audible crackling so you know it's fresh); would order again -Chaat Masala Potatoes: Thinly slides fingerlings with a delicious seasoning, reminiscent of Irish Nachos, balanced out with crisp jalapeno rings, cilantro, chopped shallots; great to share but could've had them crispier -Coconut Milk-poached catch of the day (Seabass that day): super savory and rich Tom Yum broth, Bokchoy, Tomatoes, and Mushrooms. Wanted a lighter entree and this was perfect. We also ordered a side of roasted Broccolini since we wanted more veggies. **Dessert** -Ritual: Perfect for the coffee lovers; Ritual coffee infused Espresso Ice cream atop a warm flourless chocolate tart with hazelnut praline; Great flavors and textures and def a rich dessert but not overpowering -Panna Cotta: Juxtaposition from the Ritual, light, airy, fruity, with fresh peach and almond shortcake Overall, a great dinner and see ourselves coming back for their Happy Hour from 4p-6pm at the bar. Mission Hills can be tough with parking but we actually found tons of options, both free and paid, within a 1-2 block radius so wasn't a pain at all. Great event space also with awesome views and def worth multiple visits and special gatherings.

Yelp
Finally got to try hereafter it's been bookmarked in my Yelp forever! I did see mixed reviews of this place so I was on the fence. What I loved - Stunning Views Loved the pink palette of restaurant What we had: Pink Matter - Refreshing but also spirit forward. Has about 4oz of alcohol so sip slowly! Aurora Borealis Mocktail - Sweet & bitter. This was just okay. House made Focaccia - Chewy and soft! Half Chicken - Chicken was moist. Sauce was pretty good and probably would be better if it had a starch on the side to soak up more of the sauce. Good portion size. It was super salty on one side but got better as I continued to eat it. Seafood Pasta - This was a big entree with lots of seafood. Also was salty for me. 12 oz Ribeye - Overpriced imo and this was just okay. Burnt Cheesecake - This is rich and dense, recommend sharing. This was kinda eggy and was a little underwhelming for me. Berry Pavlova - This was just okay as well. Pretty presentation though. Tips: Recommend making a reservation since it can get busy. For the view, book the Terrace in advance! Overall, amazing view and venue but food was just okay for me. Service was great.

Yelp
Late review.... Went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago. First of all, the views are AMAZING! You can see the entire SD skyline. The food was really good. I highly recommend the chicken dish. It was so flavorful!! I had the lobster risotto. It was good but just needed a dash of salt. The service was great! Daniel was AWESOME! I would definitely return here.

Yelp
Now the place is fancy pansy. The view is beautiful, but I was very disappointed in our seafood pasta. The clams literally had dirt and sand in it and unfortunately, because it has a darker ambience inside the restaurant. I couldn't see it so I put my phone light on after I had already took a bite. That's just kind of unknown no for me especially when you're going to a place Where it is quite expensive and your bills end up being $230. I expect better. The drinks are very strong. I feel like they were delicious. The appetizers were very good, but all in all I was sadly disappointed by that main entree, the waitress was really great. She even took it off our bill, knowing that she confirmed it was sand in our clams if you're looking for a place just to have appetizers and some drinks very good spot, but like I say you try then decide.

Yelp
The food was over salted to the point that it wasn't edible. The service was good. The view was beautiful. The booth was OK.

Yelp
This restaurant features a beautiful view of the city of San Diego from the balcony. The service and food were top notch. The interior is gorgeous and the silverware was conversation worthy. I highly recommend the Stone Fruits and Buffalo Mozzarella Salad. My friends also raved about the rolls and butter. Every bite was delicious as the ingredients in every were fresh. The Beet "Filet" is a vegan's dream. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
The views here are beautiful! Also you don't get interrupted by planes landing like in Little Italy and can see Cabrillo on a clear day. Our service was phenomenal for an earlier dinner and our server David made sure our bday celebration was a special one. Thank you David! The ambiance at the bar was light and airy with chic decor and they had Aesop in the bathroom (how you know it's bougie). They have a pink waiting area down below before you head up to the restaurant in the elevator. Street parking wasn't terrible on a weekday evening, but can imagine it's harder on weekends. Foodwise, the catch of the day with coconut tom yum broth was the highlight and the bread focaccia with the butter. We had sea bass and the broth was lighter in flavor not as traditional which our server told us in advance. You can skip the pork belly, way too fatty for what we got and the mushroom risotto was alright but not my favorite. Drinks were incredible, all the cocktails we got were good. I'd come back for the drinks for sure and of course the views and excellent service.

Yelp
We were visiting from out of town and stopped here for pre-dinner drinks. It had the absolute best ambiance and was so cute. So many little details to make it super stylish. I had a Fleeting Flower which was a butterfly pea tea and chamomile infused vodka, guava, cardamom, bitters, and prosecco. I thought it was very tasty! We also enjoyed the focaccia and that was great, along with the specialty butter. Definitely recommend stopping in!

Yelp
I came for brunch service this past weekend. Beautiful location, interior, and a lovely view of downtown (from the enclosed patio seating). I tried the matcha latte which was very pale green and tasted very weakly of tea, the waitress assured me it was the type of matcha they used - I prefer a richer grassy-green matcha so it wasn't for me, might be good for first-time drinkers though! She kindly swapped it for a regular latte and that was very good. The French omelette is classic and a safe choice, nice hefty portion as well. The Bitter Ritual cocktail is delicious and dangerous, I could have drunk 5!

Yelp
This place was cool. The food was really solid. Service was great. We went in for restaurant week and it was an excellent prix fixed of their offerings. The view is what makes this place more than just a good restaurant. We are planning a future brunch.

Yelp
We can't say enough good things about our dinner tonight. Each dish wowed us, and the drinks were delicious and not overly sweet. We shared the pork belly, eggplant dolmeh, tom yum sea bass, and lamb lollipops. We ended our tasty meal with a flourless cake (the ritual)! I would say 80% of the menu is gluten free. Vegetarian dishes are also clearly labeled. We made reservations ahead of time and were seated right away. The decor was instagram worthy and beautiful. It's a candlelight dinner once the sun sets (sorry, no photos to share in this review!). The service was excellent. Street parking only. Thank you to the staff at Communion for an enjoyable evening! Looking forward to coming back to enjoy the food and drinks with the daytime views of SD!

Yelp
My boyfriend surprised me with a date night at Communion, and I was immediately taken in by the beautiful décor. We walked through the bakery and then headed upstairs, where we were seated by the window with a gorgeous view of downtown San Diego. Our waiter, David, was amazing -- attentive, friendly, and made the whole evening feel special. Drinks kept flowing while we waited for our food, and the timing couldn't have been more perfect with the red moon glowing that night. We shared the chicken dish and the ribeye, both beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. My boyfriend especially loved the food and his cocktails. We ended the night with their chocolate dessert and espresso martinis, which were the perfect finish. Overall, Communion completely exceeded our expectations. We'll definitely be coming back -- and when we do, we'll be requesting David!

Yelp
Wow wow wow, I almost didn't want to write this review to keep a bit of a secret spot. Yet many already know so you should as well. I went on a Monday, hands down a top choice for happy hour. I showed up at 4pm, smart choice. Cocktails premium and small plates on the happy hour menu creative and quite tasty. The decor, design, quality of service and THE VIEW, amazing. If you want to impress someone or treat yourself like we all deserve, try it out, you will be impressed as well. As a mixologist and holistic arts entrepreneur my standards are high, Communion sets a standard for delight and surpasses many. Next time I'll come for dinner.

Yelp
Sitting at the top floor overlooking the Mission Hills neighborhood with views of the SD skyline, Communion has a beautiful space that's modern, bright and beautiful. The host awaits you on the bottom floor. We had a reservation at 4:15, was checked in promptly and seated within 5 minutes. The elevator takes you to the top where their large bar takes center stage with table seating along the windows for a view. Our server came quickly and was great throughout. She explained that the idea of the restaurant is to share delicious foods nestled in the sky, surrounded with great company. Foodwise, we weren't super hungry as we had a late lunch so we got 3 dishes. 1. Hamachi crudo: 8/10. Beautiful presentation. Thick pieces of fish. Needed a hit of acid. 2. Spanish octopus: 10/10. Our fav dish of the night. The octopus had a nice char but was tender. It sat upon squid ink risotto that was so delicious. 3. Lamb lollipops: 7/10. These were just okay. It would have benefited from a better crust. The cook was perfectly mid rare. The seasoning was underwhelming. I fear I've been spoiled by the lamb at Callie. 4. Sticky toffee apple cake 10/10. This was a perfect dessert. A great mixture of textures and temperatures. Not overtly sweet and surprisingly light. A great end to our meal. Parking is tough in this neighborhood. You just gotta get lucky with street parking.

Yelp
I had first learned about Communion by reading another person's review on Yelp. I had been unaware of it before that time. The restaurant is located in a new condominium building on University Avenue at Goldfinch Street, in Mission Hills district of San Diego. You enter into a leafy courtyard of the building then take an elevator up to the very top floor. The hostesses, who are all very kind, especially Nicole, will greet you. There is a large bar in the center of the room and tables positioned all around the perimeter. On the South side, there are views all the way to Downtown! There is also a large enclosed patio room, which is somewhat plain in its design. The Sole Meuniere was quite good. I also enjoyed two mocktails, both of which were made with care.

Yelp
Really pretty view of downtown on one side of the restaurant. However the tables on that side with the view are mainly single 2 people tables so if you're looking to get dinner with a view don't go with a party. We got the porter house steak and it was cooked to perfection so tender so good. The herb butter was amazing as well. Steak was more than enough for 2 people to share. We even had left overs. Side note: the reflections from all of the lights inside the restaurant reflects on the windows and it's hard to take photos of downtown

Yelp
Had the pleasure of coming here for dinner this past weekend. Once you check in with the host, you take an elevator up to the rooftop. The restaurant sits on top of micro apartments. The waitress (wish I remembered her name) gave us a run down of the restaurants vision. She loves her job and that was obvious. She described the food very well. We had a few dishes but the most memorable was the potato! The sauce was so good. I would have licked that plate clean if I was home haha. I was a bit disappointed as they ran out of the carpaccio and I wanted to try it. I thought the drinks were okay... but I'lol be back to try again.

Yelp
Beautiful view, good food and nice atmosphere. Service is excellent. Cons: Had to wait about 15 minutes even though we had a reservation. Specifically told them we wanted to sit inside when I called to make reservation, but were seated outside. Cocktails are expensive for the amount you get in the glass. Pros: Beautiful view and upscale, edgy vibe with reasonable pricing. Excellent service and definitely friendly. The drinks tasted good. The food was pretty superb. Everything we had was flavorful, cooked correctly and came out in a timely manner. Free dessert for the birthday girl. I would absolutely try this place again.

Yelp
We beat the rush with a 6pm reservation and a spot in the terrace! Wow! What a view! We ordered the Focaccia and loved it! We also shared the Baked Triple Cream which was surprisingly delicious especially with the leftover focaccia. My husband ordered the chicken since the pork chop wasn't available. He really liked the chicken. I ordered the BEET filet and it was a vegetarian delight! Their Moscow mule mocktails was good too! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Came here for a dinner date with my close friend. Ambiance is amazing you walk into a dim-light hallway to a really cute courtyard. You then take an elevator upstairs and is greeted with a pink lights decorated room. The floor is mainly glass so you can enjoy the view. We were lucky to face the downtown view which was amazing on a clear night. Service was good. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and were seated at the bar since we didn't make a reservation. The bartender made us some libel non acholic drinks in the menu. There are two to chose from. Both was really refreshing and price well. $10 For Food we ordered the PEAS AND ARTICHOKES for to share. Super good very refreshing salad. I ordered the COCONUT MILK POACHED LOCAL SEABASS. This dish had me very excited but I need a bit more flavor it was very light. Being a big fan of Tom yum I expected a bit more. The Spanish octopus I did not try but looks delicious. Parking was fairly easy since I went on a Wednesday around 7 so found a spot right up front. Street parking for the most part. Will definitely be back for date night to try other dishes.

Yelp
We had such a great time at Communion! The rooftop patio was the perfect spot for dinner and drinks, especially since we got there right at golden hour- the view was amazing. We had guests visiting from out of town. There were five of us, and we shared the lamb lollipops, hamachi crudo, Wagyu beef carpaccio & the Spanish Octopus. Everything was delicious! We also tried a few cocktails- the Ay Dios Cyrus, High Priestess, and both of their mocktails- and they were all really good. Our server was awesome, super friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. Getting in was a little tricky (we went through the coffee shop and took the elevator up). Can't wait to come back for a date night!

Yelp
The view and the vibe from here are excellent. Great happy hour deals and there is an air of professionalism that runs throughout the dining experience. All the servicers and bartenders knew their menu and were friendly. The tuna appetizer was a cool take on a standard tower/curdo. Loved the pairing. The lamb was prepared well and the Indian spices mixed with some fresh salad and the fruit added a great balance. The lobster risotto was a little mushy for our liking. It had potential but came up a little short on seasoning.

Yelp
First time here and I have to tell you, I will definitely be back. When you enter the complex, there's a hostess in front of an elevator that takes you up to the roof.. when we got to the top we were greeted by the two most pleasant people and quickly got us to our seats, which had a beautiful view of downtown The ambience was beautiful, classy and clean. With not a bad seat in the house and there's even an outside option which I will try next time.. We started off our meal with the Crudo and the carpaccio which was to die for and I highly recommend recommended . We also shared the lamb lollipops that had a prayer of parsnips under it.. then we finished our meal with the H duck, which was probably the best duck I have ever had. We finished with a dessert. I can't even remember what it was called, but it said on this light fluffy cake with vanilla bean ice cream and topped with the most delicious salted plantain chips. I'm only sad. I didn't take more pictures of the food. . It's definitely quality food and the weights were very attentive. I'm a very happy customer

Yelp
The place is very nice and service was fine. The caviar is a waste. There's too much cream and that's all you taste, might as well not put the caviar on it. The poached sea bass was missing a little something with more umami, which is something considering it should have been in tom yum broth which is usually packed with fish sauce. The mocktail were tasty. I'd go again to try the next seasonal menu but if the experience is the same then that will be it for this place. Fort Oak was much better.

Yelp
Communion came up in my feed as a hot new restaurant, and as a Yelp Elite, of course I had to visit! We came for a special occasion so that made it even better, and the experience exceeded my expectations. I noted two unique things about this restaurant, the first being its location on the rooftop of The Sasan apartment building. There is a coffee shop on the bottom floor and you enter into the shared seating area that is a nice open-air space and check in at the host stand. From there you are escorted up the elevator into a lovely and lively space with a large central bar and seating around the sides along with an outside dining area. I say lively because it was a bit loud considering it was almost full and the space seems to trap sounds. I must also mention the views - excellent views of downtown and the water seen through the floor to ceiling windows. Note that some seating is right up against the window and probably isn't the best for those afraid of heights. The second is the decor and theme. As the name suggests, it makes you feel like you are in church about to take communion. There are subtle touches of a cathedral (definitely check out the bathrooms) along with the names of menu items, as you'll see from my list of dishes ordered: COCKTAILS Angel's redemption is probably the best bourbon and passion fruit drink I've ever had. It was so smooth and well-blended, highly recommend if you like bourbon. Supreme Sacrifice used mezcal, ancho reyes and a charred corn husk to give a fabulously smokey taste along with hints of pineapple. FOOD Spanish octopus arrived with one large tentacle on top and additional pieces below along with squid ink risotto. This was probably my favorite dish since the octopus was cooked just right with a perfectly crispy outside and went oh so well with the squid ink risotto. Linguini & Clams had a good flavor to the sauce however was slightly disappointed that there were only 4 clams. Coconut milk poached local seabass to round off the seafood feast. Besides the fact that I love seabass, it came in a tom yum broth with lots of other flavors that went so well together. The fish sat atop bok chow and had mushrooms and tomatoes in the broth. DESSERT Since it was a special occasion, the staff presented us with a complimentary dessert which I believe was The Ritual warm flourless chocolate tart. It was a nice ending to our meal. My last two notes are about their wonderful hospitality starting from the host stand to the wait staff. Our waiter in particular was very personable and really added to our experience. Lastly, there is only street parking available, however I saw quite a few spots in the adjacent neighborhood.

Yelp
I came here for to celebrate my friend's birthday and all I have to say is we were impressed! Every dish we had was a solid 10/10. Even the dessert that I keep thinking about days later, was the best dessert I've had. We like to do family style when we order and we ordered the chaat masala potatoes, sage hill tomato and strawberry salad, dolmeh eggplant, & steak frites. Everything we ordered was truly amazing. I would say my top favorites were the chaat masala potatoes and the steak frites. In addition to our main dishes, The three of us ordered the Aurora Borealis mocktail that was delicious! For dessert we had the sticky apple cake and I believe the complimentary birthday dessert was the ritual. Both were flavorful and different than any dessert I've had, but, if you love apple pie...you HAVE to get the sticky apple cake. I honestly asked for a dessert refill jokingly, but would have taken it in a heartbeat if that was possible. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We had to move back our reservation by an hour since our party was running late and they were so kind to make the changes for us. They also called to mention concerns of the cold outside since it was starting to get windy and rainy, but they have heaters and rolling blinds that kept us wam and dry. The views are truly amazing from their patio dining. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I am looking forward to dining here again! :)

Yelp
I came here for my birthday after seeing beautiful pictures on Yelp and it was such a great choice to make! The restaurant is beautifully set up for inside and outside. The views are everywhere so anywhere you sit will be fine! We ordered the steak and frites, eggplant dish, potatoes dish. For dessert we ordered the sticky apple cake and for my birthday they brought out a chocolate dessert. Everything was soooo good! I would absolutely order every dish again! The service was so kind and delightful! The food came out fast and fresh. Sydney did a great job helping us choose our plates and was so nice turning off and on the heater for us because we sat outside. Jackie the owner came up and checked in on us too! It was so nice talking to her. It was a successful birthday and can't wait to tell more people about Communion!

Yelp
I'm not sure what the hype is but we felt our food was mediocre. Street parking so arrive a little early to find parking. The ambiance is beautiful. The elevator ride up is interesting. It's very dimly lit but each table has its own portable lamp. It's very loud so I wouldn't come here on a first date because you'll barely be able to hear each other speak. There are heat lamps on the outside patio that if it had been turned down just one notch, would've been the perfect temperature. The view was okay. We received complimentary champagne and dessert for our anniversary which were delicious and a nice touch. Our waters were refilled often. Cocktails were unique and delicious. Our server Sydney was very nice and knowledgeable of the menu. We had the hamachi crudo which was just okay. It was missing something for that extra kick of flavor but I liked the grapefruit served on top. The focaccia bread was crispy and fluffy. It had a great texture, but it lacked flavor. The steak frites were good but we're not a fan of pre-sliced steaks. However, the cook and flavor were perfect! The fries had a nice flavor but it was a little over seasoned. The chocolate dessert was surprisingly really good and the perfect and ending to our meal, but it could've been without the olive oil. Overall, a nice dining experience but nothing wow'd us. We won't be returning but if you're in the area, definitely stop by for some cocktails!

Yelp
Amazing spot for dinner with friends or date night. The view is great and so is the food. I recently went for a birthday celebration and everything was amazing. The drinks, the food and the service. The steak was cooler to perfection, the focaccia bread delightful, and the cocktails were refreshing and delicious.

Yelp
The food was amazing! My favorite was the Bree, it had a nice crispy outside and a gooey inside. The lamb chops were also good, with an extraordinary flavor. The Service was good. Attentive was pretty good, they filled our water fast. The ambiance is was amazing! It had a very nice view. Although, it was very loud inside.

Yelp
Communion is the other half of the two new establishments that have recently debuted inside The Sasan in Mission Hills. It's located on the eighth floor of the pink building with a beautiful rooftop view of the area. I do hope they can expand their hours beyond dinner because unless you show up between 4 and 5 pm, the scenery is greatly diminished due to the early sunset at this time of the year. I found parking to be challenging because there were not enough nearby curbside spaces to support all of the businesses close to this busy intersection of the neighborhood. There was a check-in stand at the ground level near the elevator. The host would then communicate to their counterpart upstairs that a party would be arriving. As soon as you exited the elevator, the pink and purple lighting around the central bar was immediately in front of you. The entire floor was enclosed with ground to ceiling windows so I can only imagine how illuminated it gets during the daytime. Behind the bar area was another dining room with tables that could seat larger groups and a patio. I sat at the bar where there were close to two dozen spots. The menu was made up of about sixteen different small plates and entrees featuring a range of global offerings. My two choices were the Colorado Lamb Lollipops and the Dry Aged Duck Breast. The former came as two Frenched lamb chops crusted with zaatar and served with curry yogurt, figs, grapes, and frisee. The medium rare cooked meat was beautifully plated. The yogurt provided a cool contrast to the lamb flavor. The duck breast was thinly sliced into at least a dozen pieces and was served with a cassis reduction, broccolini, cippolini onion, and parsnip. It was the most generous serving of duck I have ever received for the price I paid. The dry aged meat was cooked perfectly, and the sweetness of the blackcurrant sauce paired nicely. I would certainly order this entree again, especially when there are upscale eateries that charge 50% more for duck breast and provide a smaller portion size. If Communion would open for brunch/lunch and find a way to improve the parking situation, then this place could be a five-star experience.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! We went for brunch & our first interaction was with the host, Lauren, she greeted us with a big warm smile and her energy was so kind and bubbly. The food was delicious, the service is great, and the restaurant is beautiful. Highly recommend!
