22 Neighborhood Dive Bars in Houston

"Bars in Midtown can be fast-paced and loud, but that certainly is not the case here. The vibe is set by comfy sofa seating and candlelights throughout. creating a down-home atmosphere. When the weather is good the patio makes for a great spot to perch down and have some beers with friends. Don’t expect loud music or having to yell to the bartender to make your order here, think of it as a friendly house party-type energy." - Sean Hekmat

The 16 Best Bars and Restaurants in MIdtown Houston | Eater Houston

"This dark little bar, set away from the bustle of other sections of Midtown, has a more of a Montrose-y neighborhood feel, with tons of regulars, super-friendly bartenders, and ‘80s dance music on the speakers. In addition to a specialty drink menu, the Gaucho Fries, topped with chorizo, chimichurri, and a fried egg, are a must-order." - Brittanie Shey

Google
Steak night was solid ! Price may be a little on the steep side for some people but overall quality is definitely there. Had a great whiskey recommendation and the steak was cooked absolutely perfect ! I will say the last few steak night places I went to were not as good as here, the seasoning on the steak was so good and again absolutely perfect medium temp. Service was on point it’s a nice vibe at this place definitely need to stop in and give it a try and get a steak on Tuesday ! $28 for a 12oz ribeye and 2 sides honestly for the quality it’s a solid deal ✅

A Hidden Gem in Houston - Community Bar Delivers an Unforgettable Experience If you're searching for a place that embodies the heart and soul of Houston, look no further than Community Bar. Google
I came to Community Bar expecting a laid-back local spot—and instead ended up staying way longer than I meant to. Thanks a lot, guys. JP is one of those bartenders who remembers your name, makes a solid drink every time, and is just a little too good at making you feel welcome. Not sure if he’s mixing cocktails or running for mayor, but either way, he’s got the charm down. Kevin isn’t just a bartender—he’s the kind of person who turns a regular night out into a memorable one. His personality is the perfect mix of funny, laid-back, and just the right amount of sarcastic to keep you laughing between sips. He knows how to read the room, makes everyone feel welcome (even the awkward folks), and somehow remembers your drink and your name like he’s got a secret superpower. Great balance of low-key energy and “accidentally stayed till last call” vibes. Great drinks, great crowd, and even better people behind the bar. Highly recommend. Just don’t blame me when you’re still there on a Tuesday night “just stopping by.”

I was hanging out with my brothers here. Food was AMAZING. I don’t drink but my brothers say the drinks were very good. It’s a cozy and quaint place to take a date. I plan on taking my wife there for date night.

Google
The people are nice. The food is average at best. We ordered the Med burger and fries. The burgers had no seasoning. The only flavor came from the toppings. I liked the goat cheese, chutney, and spinach. The fries served to me were cold and hard. I had to ask them to be remade. Perhaps other menu items are better? We had some type or punch for drinks. It was smooth and easy to drink. The interior decor is dated. I’m not in a rush to return. Parking is limited. They have maybe 4 spots in front of the building. Plan to park on the street. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Google
I had a great time with friends and family. The staff was friendly but it was very busy so it took a while to place an order. There was live music playing too. I plan to visit again soon. I want to check out steak night.

Google
Went on a Tuesday for Steak Night. This place does not disappoint. The atmosphere is nice. Great bartender, and amazing cook because that was THE BEST STEAK HANDS DOWN. You don't need steak sauce you don't even need a knife. Tender, juicy, and flavorful. I will definitely be returning without a doubt.

Google
I’ve been going to Community Bar for the past several weeks, and the service is the reason! J.P. is, absolutely, THE MAN! Cooper is always friendly and helpful! Rashawn is just a complete ball of joy! And Kevin is as cool as they come! I mostly frequent this spot on Tuesdays, STEAK NIGHT, BABY!!!!!!!!!

Raven S.

Yelp
The rib tips were awesome, drinks were great. The service was excellent. I will be back for Steak Night on Tuesdays.

Yelp
Just landed for Houston Cigar Week and when I tell you that the food, drinks and ambience here were EVERYTHING, I mean it! The ribeye steak dinner was seasoned to perfection and cooked just as well...melted in my mouth like butter. Literally the best steak I've ever had. I will definitely be back before heading back to Cali.

Yelp
Imagine "Cheers" but with great food. This spot has become one of our faves. We love steak night (Tuesdays), their brisket nachos, and their snapper. And, their sides... brussel sprouts, collard greens, and asparagus arr wonderful.

Yelp
This perfectly sized bar is great for small gatherings and has a great vibe, delicious food, and the bartenders know what they're doing in real life! Shot out To my new favorite bartender BRITT!!!! She was so much fun, Knowledgeable and the Communication was on point. Even though she was busy she made eye contact and told everyone that she would be right with them. The chicken nachos and the wings were perfect. TV. 's on the patio for all of the games and everything. I went for a private party but definitely will be coming back!
google avatar

Tania M.

Yelp
I was between 4 and 5 stars solely because the service is so great... but the food was a little on the lacking side. You walk in, and the music automatically puts you in a groove. The bartenders are great and super creative. One of them is even a florist. The owner or manager is so attentive. The drinks are ok but I didn't really enjoy the hearty served meal. MY meat was a little dry, but my friends chimmichurri chicken was fabulous. On Fridays, they have live jazz on tye patio. Which is worth taking some time to experience. I absolutely felt comfortable and relaxed here. Will go back for live music and drinks not necessarily for the food.

Yelp

Yelp
We came to cost for cigar weekend from Oakland, California. We stopped at The Community Bar. Hands DOWN THE ONWERS are nothing short of amazing. Justin, Justin, Justin. The food was AMAZING!! I feel like AMAZING is an understatement. The drinks AMAZING! Staff AMAZING!! The Community Bar has my heart. Every time I come to Houston I'm coming to Community Bar, hands down!! If you're looking for good food, good drinks this is the spot! HANDS DOWN!

Ronni B.

Yelp
I love it here. Good vibes only. It's really small and cute. All my friends enjoyed their food and I really enjoyed the brisket nachos. The ambiance was great too.

Yelp
We stopped by The Community Bar on a Tuesday for a late dinner and some drinks while we were looking for a spot in the area on Yelp. After Ubering over, we walked in and grabbed some seats. The Community Bar is a casual yet trendy bar. After ordering some cocktails, we were impressed with their food menu. A lot of appetizing options, including some Argentinian food, which was a nice surprise. I wasn't terribly hungry so I went with the Argentinian sausage appetizer which was appetizing but a pretty small portion. The group's food looked good too. The cocktail delivered and I did like their list of creative cocktails. We finished things off with some green tea shots. If you're looking for a casual bar with better food than your standard bar fare, definitely check out The Community Bar!

Yelp
We visited this bar after a concert at the HOB. It was late but I was surprised the kitchen was still open and serving food. I ordered the beef empanadas and they were fresh, hot and delicious! Sadly I didn't drink some cannot comment on them but my hubby said his were good. It was barbecue night and we ordered some ribs. I really wanted to try the rib tips but they were out. The ribs were tender and full of flavor; no sauce needed. The service was great, the waitress was attentive and we never had to hunt for her when we needed anything. I would definitely visit again!

ronald m.

Yelp
They have THE best ribs I have ever tasted. Going back for the food. Servers were the bestalso!

Yelp
This was a staple in the community until new ownership. The new owners increased prices by 50% and clearly has no clue on how to run a bar or know the industry. The original food menu was great but now there's a new cook who can bbq only. Fish smells the whole bar and highly over seasoned and the roasted potatoes was hard as river rocker. The place is small which is cool but you don't know if it's a dive bar, sports bar, urban bar or smoke bar. The bar no longer has no identity. The new bar owner invites their friends and only hang with them. They are not personable and it shows they don't know the industry at all. The old community is gone never to return.

Yelp
Went solely for the food - This place left me speechless and full. The food was well seasoned and tender. Hats off to the chef - I have a new place to eat! The staff are huge Astros fans and will likely be watching the game with you! They were attentive and made sure we were well accommodated. They even wiped down the outdoor seating area after it rained. There's plenty of outdoor seating and fairly limited indoor seating. There's only ~7 parking spaces, so be prepared to look for parking on the weekend/busy hours. The moody lighting, incense smell, and chill vibes make it a great bar to hang out in. TUESDAY STEAK NIGHT: $16 The Hawaiian Marinated Ribeye (4.5/5) was soooo good - well seasoned, had crispy edges AND the fat melted in your mouth. The chimichurri sauce on the steak added a kick with its acidity. The roasted rosemary potatoes was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The bacon balsamic brussel sprouts surprised me the most. I normally don't like brussel sprouts but the way they made it toasty and soft got me hooked. It was surprisingly sweet too! My only complaint about the dish overall was it's slightly saltier than I'd prefer it to be. I'm glad I ordered the sautéed mushrooms, spinach onions and garlic to help neutralize the saltiness.

Cheryl B.

Yelp
OMG, this was the best steak prepared by the owner. I must admit I didn't expect it to taste as good as it did, the entire meal had me wanting more. The community bar outdid itself from the service to the meal! I will definitely be back!!

Yelp
I would've loved to experience the food it inside ambiance at this bar. However, right at this moment.. a random encounter by an employee who's literal name was 'Karen' ruined the experience for me. While talking with my friend over the phone, I stood outside at the front walkway entrance. I was saying oh this looks like a cute bar to experience. Then out of the blue 'Karen' came to me rudely yelling 'my car is gonna be towed and gone.. if u don't move from their parking lot.' Confused at this verbal response.. I said excuse me .. she says ' yea you heard me.. bla blah bla... I responded not to speak to me that way. And asked why she was speaking that way.. She then said she can talk yo em any way she pleases.. Umm no ma'am you cannot.. get out of my face.. is what you can do.. She walks by in. , throws me a finger sign, which I captured. What in the what...: houston we have a real problem, Afterwards, a manager gentleman walked out and apologized in her behalf and welcomed me in.., which was nice but the vibe was already off ... I wish I was able to provide a positive review but the experience pre entering was already a 0.

Yelp
alex and will are the best!!!....these two make the party happen!!! always a great vibe when these two are bartending!!!

Yelp
Excellent food and very laid back environment. This bar lives up to its name. It's a bar for the local community that is diverse and a more professional mature crowd

Yelp
My favorite place to hang out downtown. It's a lounge feel. The music is always good and it has a mix of everything. I use to come here often. I haven't been in a few years until last weekend. The bathrooms are always clean and the food is good. The bartender is friendly and a cutie. The drinks and food came out quickly. I believe you have to order by 1am. I will be back.
google avatar

Darrell B.

Yelp
Great drinks and good food. But not sure y management loves cigarettes on the patio but has banned cigars. Has anyone ever heard "I love cigarette smoke?" But we've all heard that "your cigar smoke is awesome and reminds me of..."?
google avatar

Jason A.

Yelp
Great drinks and food . Even on the late night . Top notch service . I love the intimate look of the place . Really lax feeling

Yelp
Soooo, Midtown in Houston tends to be full of full-blown douchebag joints. The reverse is true of Community Bar. It reminds me of Old Absinthe House or Jean Lafitte's in New Orleans. Karen, the owner, is fun and sassy and has created a wonderful food menu. If you are looking for a place in midtown with no A-holes and cool people who are unpretentious and don't "uptalk" in baby voices like the Kardashians, this is your place.
google avatar

Yelp
Place is small and parking is difficult. Menu is only outside??? Inside is very dark for ambiance but food was amazing! We just couldnt see it lol

Yelp
First visit! Met a friend for a drink after work. It's quite and cozy! Great drinks! Love the lemon pepper garlic Parmesan wings. Would visit again.

Yelp
Fair warning, I'm writing slightly tipsy and borderline drunk. What can I say, had a good night? Which also featured a delicious, succulent steak-- their special every Tuesday night which consists of a juicy, crispy on the edges ribeye, creamed corn and homemade mashed potatoes. Lawd. Lemme tell you, the steak was crispy around the edges, the best part was the fat that rendered and melted in your mouth. Not to mention it was well seasoned. Very slightly sweet and perfectly tart chimichurri sauced drizzled over, who needs Heinz A1 anyways? Makes you cry tears of joy after your last bite because why do good things never last? It's inevitable isn't it? And the creamed corn was the best complimentary side and my personal fave. Mashed potatoes was creamy with bits of skin as a little bite of texture here and there, you can tell it's made in house. Not much seasoning, it's more of a texture appeal and if we're being honest here, it's hard to go wrong with mashed potatoes. The plate was clean after I was done. Compliments to the chef! It was game night, and entertaining to see the bartender so enthusiastic about the Astros. Every time they went above and beyond, he reached for the literal tambourine and cheered. Loved the energy here. Inside seating is limited, and the patio is much more chill and calm. Recommend it for those nights you want to feel a breeze. OH! Forgot to mention, some of the best mojitos. Not too sweet, tart with a refreshing "ah" quality induced by citrus. Pretty sure they get other drinks down right, give them a try! They deserve your $$$.

Yelp
My favorite taco night place. Steaks are also very good here. Beer is really good here. I really like this place. Good place to watch sports. Really great staff and nice ambiance

Yelp
This place is nothing shy of majestic. It's like Argentina and the Caribbean made a bar in the humid night sky, a. It's hidden away by day, but pop in at night. Food is quality, drinks superb. Ask for Will. Will is the man. Huge fan of Will, and you will be too.
google avatar

Diana A.

Yelp
Nachos with chicken were good. Bangkok ravioli/dumplings were out favorite. Spicy, cooked with lime and other good seasonings. We struggled for a bit to find parking and snagged a spot near restaurant. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Private area was also available. Dark and stormy was excellent however it was a little overpriced. My skinny maragarita was a bit week and tiny for price. Service was great. Great way to wind your day down after bike riding 35 miles. Quiet laid back with fantastic music with ability to still have a conversation.
google avatar

Shelby L.

Yelp
I freaking. love. this. place. It's such an easy gem to miss. The outside definitely looks sketch and I'm always nervous to leave my car out there. What awaits inside is completely worth it. Inside, it's tiny and dark in all the right ways. The craft cocktails are solid, although the menu isn't that extensive. They do make a mean moscow mule, their ginger beer isn't too sweet like a lot of places. All of their food is fantastic. I particularly love their Wednesday $2 taco night. I've also heard amazing things about their steak night, which is dumb that I haven't had yet.
google avatar

Farrah A.

Yelp
Wait wait. What? I never reviewed Community Bar? That place is my jam. Tuesday steak night offers one of the best in town. A ribeye on the grill - sometimes bone-in ribeye - with a side of Merlot mushrooms, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, jalapeño pineapple ... And the Community Nachos are a must. And the funnel cake with Blue Bell ice cream. Music playlist is good. Barkeep friendly. Chill patio. If you find street parking, watch out. I have a few friends that've gotten their cars broken into. NOT the bar's fault, obvi, but just a warning.
google avatar

Yelp
True hole in the wall establishment on Smith street. Very casual place to hang out. there is some parking around it but the rest is street parking. Went yesterday for Tuesday steak night, not sure what the compliments in previous reviews were for. We walked in and we were hit with a wave of cigarette smoke. Bar door left open and smokers might as well smoke inside. Walked up to the bar and was looking for a menu. Bartender said order here, no menu. No price list. So I predict that cost of alcohol can vary from one day to another & one person to another. Did I mention this place was casual? We ordered the steak and it comes with fixed sides, we saw the grill near the back and two guys were running around to cook & serve people. We wanted a seat inside but it was so dark we probably not able to see the food. We sat out and no one comes and asks if you need anything. This is a leanly loose run operation. The money they can make with a few touches of improved service and efficiency..but why use brain power. Anyhow. We got our steaks and they were both cooked medium rare. It was ok for the price, mine was greasy & salty. I didn't care much for the cheesy mash. I won't come back again.. But now I can cross this one off my list :) This a 2.5 star hole in the wall, poorly lit place to smoke & eat greasy salty steaks on tuesday night. Thumbs down..

Emeka M.

Yelp
This bar is so great. The bar staff is so great and the vibe is so great. Ask for Will. He is so great and he'll take care of you. Please believe me. This bar is great. Whenever you're in Houston. Please make sure you come to community bar.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
This bar for steak night specials tops any other place in Houston. I love Hideaway, but I will pay a few more dollars for this perfectly cooked steak. In comparison to Hideaway, their service is really fast and their sides trumps Hideaway's baked potato and side salad. Also you won't have to yell at the top of your lungs as you do at Hideaway because of the live bands. Seriously you are in for an extremely flavorful ribeye steak topped with chimichurri, and a side of corn and mashed potatoes. You HAVE TO TRY IT!! **Tuesday night is their steak night special! Also a tip is that you have to order your steaks at the bar.

Kelsey V.

Yelp
This bar is NOT for the community at all. Manager was rude, no punctual, and only liked regulars.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
I absolutely love the steak nights here! I've been twice, and I have to say this is one of the best steak nights in Houston. They've got a tender, moist steak with a chimichurri sauce on top. I'm not sure what it is, but the steak has a great sweetness to it. It's garnished with some mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and pineapple, which complements everything perfectly. Only down-side I'd say is it's kind of dark and small - too dark for my tastes at least. If you're not at the bar, it's kind of hard to see the person right in front of you if you're there to sit and talk.
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
So far the best steak night my out of town coworkers and I have had while in Houston on various trips. The staff were very accommodating for us and allowed us to order our steaks Pittsburg style although they had plenty of other steak orders to bring out. The bartenders Erin/Alan were also very awesome as they chilled our drink glasses so our IPAs wouldn't warm quickly. Great customer service and food. Will definitely be back when in town.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Tuesday steak night is a go. The place was almost empty, service was fast, and the steak was good, especially considering it's a bar. It's a dark ambience that won't suit everyone. I personally think it's cool.

Sherri H.

Yelp
OMG. What happened? I guess you can blame it on COVID - but this place is a dump! Dark, stinky and terrible drinks from a bartender that acted like we were boring him. Hard pass until some drastic changes are made. Avoid
google avatar

Yelp
This is a review of just the amazing service I've continued to have here... although I've only checked in here just once, I've been here several times and I'll only stay and visit if my favorite Bartender Will is working, he never disappoints! There was one bartender there that I absolutely did not like and feel as though she was a bit racist, anyway, Will is amazing, it's as though he read my mind in what I wanted, he knew I wanted water, he knew I was hungry and he knew I wanted a shot and didn't have to ask!! They serve food til 1:30 am guys and his taste in music is impeccable!! He knows how to spin on the 80s and also new age synth pop! I had the gaucho fries and they were very very tasty with a mix of regular and sweet potato fries and loved the chimicuri however, they could turn down the vinegar a notch on this dish but overall very tasty! I didn't get the hours of my fave bartender but if you go there during his shift you will not regret it!! AND he loves BANKS!! I'll be going more often now!!!
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
So when arriving i really can't say anything bad because bartender was quick, funny and made a kickass drink. Not only was the alcohol on point, but the food was killer. Omgeezy!! This place is a definite spot to return too.

Yelp
I was scrolling through my check in's and just realized i've never written a review for Community! For shame. I love so many things about this place. The bartender is awesome. He can make you anything your little heart desires. They do have beer but not a huge selection. They lean more towards cocktails made with fresh ingredients and fruit infused vodka's. Their cheeseburgers are stupid good. Like don't even go anywhere else y'all. Now, let's talk about what made me fall in love with this place: Goat. Cheese. Eggrolls. Shut. UP. The first time I experienced them I was with Rachel B. and Mike W. drunker than shit. I needed fried food and that is what I ordered. I woke up the next morning thinking about these egg rolls, but i didn't know if I was just super wasted or if they were really just that good.....I'm happy to report that I have ordered them 3-4 times since then and wasted or not, they are gooooooood. If you like goat cheese and unconventional ingredients, order them. I swear to christ you will not regret it.

Yelp
So walking up to Community Bar I wasn't expecting much. However, after making it to the bar we were nicely greeted by "Dani" the bartender. FIrst off she was cute and a lot of fun. They ran out of crown so we had jack and cokes instead. I was already knocking off the stars, but we decided to at least finish our drinks and give it a shot. As we stood at the bar we noticed they were playing WANTED on the tv in the background, thought that was kinda cool. Then I noticed the music, first I heard your basic top 40s, then a country song, then some chopped and screwed rap, then some latino, and ended with some rock music. I made a comment and Dani told us that's what you get here. It's just a crapshoot. She said especially with the food. Sometimes its good sometimes its terrible. We kept Dani company for awhile and I saw this odd bottle on the backshelf labeled belvedere IX. I asked her what that was? Since it looked like a halloween version of belvedere. She was like you wanna try it? It's a promotional bottle so it's free. I never turn down free drinks. OMG this thing is terrible. It contains items such as ginger, almond, and cinnamon. But at least she gave it to us for free. I will be back for another random night at a very odd spot.

Yelp
I've been hankering to check this place out since it's so highly regarded on Yelp. I'm always on the hunt to expand my horizons as I'm always finding myself in the same ole Montrose dive bars. We came here on a Wednesday so there wasn't much of a crowd. There were possibly a dozen or so people lingering around the front porch seating area and then maybe six of us, tops, hanging on inside. We somehow made the best of it and grabbed a couple of drinks and a booth. The bartender was extremely friendly and offered her opinions on what to drink when I inquired about any signature drinks. The patrons kept mostly to themselves and seemed to comprise of late-twenties to thirties locals - the majority having that "I'm a regular here" quality. This feels like a well-maintained dim dive bar. I think I really much enjoyed it just because of its simplicity. The couple of hours spent there were pretty darn uneventful, but I was rather pleased at how friendly and pleasant everyone seemed. I would not hesitate to stop by here again, but next time it'll be on a more hectic day so that I can better assess whether this bar deserves all its high ratings.

Yelp
This place is small with a very friendly vibe. I really like the decor which is shabby chic done to perfection. Great food specials.

Yelp
I've been living 3 blocks away from this place for three years and never knew it existed. Good: The two bartenders working last night were very attentive and did a great job keeping up with the busy bar. Nice cocktail list with some creative drinks which despite their 9$ price point and 80% ice content were pretty tasty. Good & Bad: Stopped by since google said they were having a steak night. The steak we ordered was 18$ which I think is a little pricey for a discount cut with some mashed potatoes and corn. That being said it was cooked like we ordered and was about at par for a steak night steak. Bad: Their seating arrangement is probably one of the dumbest thing I've ever seen. They have these awkward height bar stools at the 5-6 small tables inside (your knees are literally at the same level of the table top). For a hole in the wall kind of bar 9$ for a cocktail seems a little out of place. Conclusion: Mixed feelings ^^ clearly

Yelp
We had a great time here Sat nite, listening to 80's and 90's oldies (music is different every nite). Impressed with the menu, not your typical bar food, with healthier items to choose from. We had the ravioli appetizer and two pizzas- Green Fairy and John Deere- delicious! We ordered after midnight too so kitchen stays open late. Drinks were on point as well. To top it off, Wil & Alejandro are awesome bartenders/servers, A+ customer service all around. We will definitely be back for drinks & food, and Tuesday night steak, and the nice deck in front when cooler weather comes around.

Yelp
I have mixed emotions while I'm writing this review, I'll explain. I walk in to Community Bar and walk up to the bar. The bar was not very busy but I still had to wait 15 min to get a beer. No exaggeration on the time! No, "I'll be right with you." or "how ya doing" at all. I order a Budweiser only to be informed they don't sell Bud. For real??? I thought it was a law if an establishment in Texas sold alcohol they HAD to carry Budweiser! Well there was two strikes already and I didn't want to wait for the third so I left. I was persuaded to return that same evening by grand tales of the best steak night in Houston. I'm glad I did! After a wait of around an hour I had the best looking, smelling, and tasting steak in Houston in front of me. Everything on the plate was perfect. Hats off to the master chef that prepares these plates! I went back the following Tuesday for a repeat of all the above. VERY slow service, a longer wait this time for the steak (about an hour and a half) and another perfectly cooked steak! So..... If you have plenty of time and you're very patient and don't drink Bud and want the best steak in town, Community Bar is the place for you. I'll probably be back for more steak nights here but it'll be a night when I have all evening to burn. Fix the service and I'll be a regular for sure.

Yelp
Please do not go here. Why? Because I like its low key & laid back atmosphere. The one thing it does not need is to be packed! Chef Bob makes great food and there's an amazing assortment of dishes to choose from. Bartender Dani serves awesome drinks with a smile. My friends and I are "regulars" at this place and it's those two individuals that keep us coming back for a night out. Yeah they don't have many TVs, the bar is kind of small...but that's actually an awesome thing at this spot. Order the Crimson Mule when you are here.
