Venezuelan Brunch Bistro Origen Opens in Bywater | Eater New Orleans

"I opened Como Arepas as my first Venezuelan restaurant — a casual, counter-service spot where I sling arepas stuffed with asado negro and avocado chicken salad; business has been good and I’m already looking for a bigger location." - Justine Jones

Following Mucho Más Departure, Chef Julio Machado to Open Arepas Restaurant | Eater New Orleans

"I’m looking forward to Como Arepas, opening soon at 7712 Maple Street from Venezuelan-born chef Julio Machado: a fast-casual, counter-service spot in the former Zo’ Jo’ Cafe that will be mostly takeout with countertop seating for eight and two sidewalk tables. One of Venezuela’s most important dishes, the arepa, will be presented with close to 50 filling combinations — including traditional options like arepa dominó (black beans and cheese), asado negro, and reina pepiada (avocado and chicken salad, listed as “the Queen” on the menu) — plus vegan and vegetarian choices; arepas are made with Harina PAN so they’re gluten-free. Machado promises to bring the flavors of Venezuela made with local ingredients, and there will be fillings tailored to New Orleans tastes such as crawfish, boiled shrimp, and fried chicken (the latter was the biggest seller at two recent pop-ups at Wrong Iron), as well as sofrito red snapper, boiled quail eggs in pink sauce, deviled ham spread, and breakfast options. All arepas come with two sauces — guasacaca (avocado, cilantro, peppers, onions) and aji picante (habanero, onions, garlic, apple cider vinegar) — and the beverage lineup will start with fresh juices like limeade, tamarind, and chicha, with beer and wine to follow; the restaurant is expected to open in October and will be open Sun–Thu 8 a.m.–8 p.m. and Fri–Sat until 9 p.m." - Clair Lorell

Google
I have visited twice for drive through and overall very good. My father was born in Venezuela and I love the food. First I got the Arepa. Very good but the cheese was cheddar and was not melted. This time I got the capacha and empanadas. The cheese empanada was again cheddar and the cachapa used a more traditional cheese, but it was not fully melted. It took about 10 minutes for the food, but I didn't mind waiting. Also, both times I got a solid avocado cream sauce and a hot sauce. The hot sauce was Frank's I believe which I love on wings but not with these flavor profiles. The beef was perfect and the pork was very flavorful but could be a bit more tender. Overall it just feels like some ingredients are cheaper or easier to find than traditional ingredients. If they would use a proper melted cheese on everything and just add some jalapeno to the avocado sauce, it would be 5 stars. A few tweaks and it would be rock star, but I will still be back.

Google
Great food - got the chicken salad arepa 🤤 also sells vinyls, has free wifi, various board games, and free wifi! Stayed here to study and work on some stuff - definitely recommend for any student wanting to find a nice spot to study - or for any friend group looking for a place to hangout and play board games.

Google
Friendly service and the 2 dipping sauces out of the 3 that came with them were very good! (3rd one was just hot sauce) Cheese empanada was good, and taqueños were even better. I didn't get to try the Arepas this time, but I will be back to try them!

Google
This is my first time eating Venezuelan Food. I ate an arepa, empanada, and tequeños (fried cheese). What I like about this is that I like the neutral taste of the corn. This is something that is special and I can rarely find. I felt rich but I was full. I think everyone should try it once.

Google
I tried drive thru twice and service was very slow and rude. That was about a year ago. Nevertheless I decided to go inside to try Venezuelan food and coffee. To my surprises. 🇹🇳🧡 the place is really nice. It’s spacious and clean. I took my 2 years old and 9 years old. We had bagel pizza and cheese bread (sorry can’t remember the name)food was delicious. My cappuccino was good. Great!! We were the only one there around 1030 am. Would love to see more local supporting local business.

Yelp
I only stopped in here to get a coffee but I was intrigued by the interesting menu! I was on my way to work so I couldn't get food but I'll definitely be back to try it. I got a blended Nutella coffee and it was so good! It was rich and creamy with just the right amount of espresso the whip cream was thick and tasted home made. I'll definitely be back to try more things!

Yelp
This is borderline a 3 and below. I didn't love any flavors. Pork was way better than the chicken. I had a chicken empanada and pork arepa. The cheese was just yellow and white cheese. The avocado sauce was intersting and sweet. The spicy and avocado together made everything have more flavor.

Yelp
Great food with the taste of Venezuela. Service is always quick and friendly. I lived in Venezuela and these taste very similar to what you would eat there.

Yelp
I placed an order on DoorDash now remind you the website has no phone number. If you Google, there's no phone number. I had to go to DoorDash to get the number to reach out to these people. Ordered a three beef and cheese empanadas with three sauces and a smoothie. The pictures will reflect what I received. It's really sad. Called the number didn't get an answer. Of course I didn't expect to and then on top of that the Dasher, who dropped my food off, had the nerves to cuss me out and left it in the wrong spot so I'll be leaving another review about DoorDash. Small portions on top of that. The very first time I ordered it the food was delicious. That's why I ordered it again. Clearly there's not three different sauces!

Yelp
Como Arepas is a gem in Columbia. The space is clean, spacious, fun, and comfortable - with games, sofas, comfy chairs, record player, and places to sit and work or chat. The arepas are to die for - so fresh, so flavorful, with a subtle char on them that tastes amazing with the corn. It was morning so I had egg & cheese & avocado in mine, with parsley sauce and hot sauce. Incredible way to start the day sipping a latte alongside. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped by on our way to Kansas City because we've had arepas with a relative from Venezuela and love them. We each had an arepa with Reina pepiada (chicken and avocado salad) and a beef empanada. Honestly, I could've split an arepa because they were bigger than I've had before and generously filled. Both the arepas and empanadas were delicious and were served with bottles of avocado sauce and hot sauce. We had the flan and tres leches cake for dessert and those were excellent too. The building was kept very clean and there were board games you could play. Staff was friendly. They also served breakfast foods and had a coffee menu. We would come back here when we are in Columbia again.

Yelp
no reason this place should be empty. Patacon is huge portion and plantain on bottom didn't get soggy.

Yelp
Came here after family recommended it and the food was excellent. Nice place to sit for a coffee and do work as well. 2 of us shared a small box and had plenty of food. The beef filling was good in both empanada and arepas and the pork was so tender in the arepas. Had a tea and iced coffee to go with our meal.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way through Columbia and was pleasantly surprised how delicious the food was. The cheese tequeros were amazing and the green sauce is boom!

Yelp
Friendly service and delicious arepas! The combo platters are helpful if you aren't sure what to get.
