Farm Hotels Are Rising Up

"A writer/farmer and his wife have turned a working family farm (still growing olives, quince, oranges, figs, and more) into Companhia das Culturas, a nine-room, four-apartment agritourism escape that is tied intimately to the land." - Mark Fedeli

Companhia das Culturas (Castro Marim, Algarve) 8 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A few miles from the Spanish border, on Portugal’s southern coast, where the Atlantic edges ever closer to the Mediterranean, is the municipality of Castro Marim. It’s here that a writer/farmer and his wife have turned a working family farm (still growing olives, quince, oranges and figs) into Companhia das Culturas, a nine-room, four-apartment escape tied intimately to the land." - Tablet Hotels

This place is a slice of heaven, to escape and relax in a beautiful environment with delicious breakfast and the warmest service. It feels more like you are a guest of the owner rather than staying at a hotel. To say we loved it there is an understatement. I adored the art that the owner has collected and the architecture of the place is a delight. Thank you for the warmest welcome, the wonderful restaurant recommendations and the late check out. We will be back.

I don't even know how to begin to describe this place. It is truly sensational. The landscape allows you to relax completely as soon as you arrive. I felt so safe and special here. From the wind in the trees to the warmth of the sun, the gentle breeze and the sound of the birds, it is such a beautiful place. Inside, everywhere you look there are beautiful colours, plants and art placed with intention. It is a feast for the senses. The food is also all from the farm or from the neighbouring farms and is made with care and love. The flavour combinations are so delicate and beautiful. You will definitely feel special and cared for here. My room was perfect. The soap and creams are created by the lovely owner as well so everything is meaningful. You can walk around the property and see the trees growing the fruit you will have for breakfast. If you can, go to the hamam and have a massage. It is a little bit of calm, slow living. Everyone that works here is so kind and caring and does their best to make you feel at home. I will be thinking about this place for a long time. I went here for a retreat with Renata Cortês which was held in the converted barn/ yoga room. The walls and floor are cork which gives it such a unique and calm feeling and aroma.

We spend 4 nights at the Companhia das Culturas and had a wonderful and peaceful time. Staff is amazing and very friendly. Breakfast vas very nicely served. |I can recommend this place, it is located out in pure nature and only a few minutes away from a beautiful beach.

Our stay here was so unique and special. First of all, the space is impeccably designed; the hotel is rural and not fussy but every corner is inviting and cozy. We felt like we could relax and fully exhale. I loved that you could hear the sounds of the bugs at night and the chickens in the morning. Each morning we greeted the day in their amazing yoga room followed by a hyper local and delicious breakfast. During the day, we explored the region then spent our afternoons by the pool and evenings reading in the cozy shared living room. This hotel felt like home for four nights and was the perfect getaway we needed. Also, book the hammam. It’s extraordinary. I will say, if you’re used to more classic hotel/resort experiences with reception always available at your beck and call then this hotel might not be for you. It’s a relaxed environment that is very well maintained but feels more like a private rental or Airbnb than a resort. This vibe was perfect for us, but might not be for everyone. Lastly, the staff was so kind and accommodating and they worked hard to make our stay the best it could be. We are so grateful for this experience and can’t wait to return in the future and bring our family.

We spent three nights at the eco resort Companhia das Culturas. The small resort is well run, originally just a charming few rooms in some quaint old farm buildings has been expanded with a modern block some 100m down the road. We were in one of these modern duplex units which can accommodate upto six (double bed & two twins upstairs, two sofabeds downstairs) so are not so cheap when not fully occupied. These units are well designed and constructed but totally lacking any history or charm. They are a comfortable but totally uninspiring place to stay with no atmosphere. There is a swimming pool close by, stuck in a field with 8 loungers. So what we thought would be a really charming, cool stay with a vibe, ended up totally soulless as the owners seemingly tried to cash-in with the extra accommodation block down the road. Overall a great disappointment.

Companhia das Culturas is a very beautiful and special place. In spring there is already a very good weather, also for holidays on the beach, but there are not to many people and it's possible to really enjoy the nature and lovely redesigned farm. The team is very nice and helpful. The rooms are big and very cosy. The breakfast is delicious and made of local ingredients. I recommend also to take some treatments in the private hamam by the therapist, which is really very good. Those who like fish and seafood will feel like in heaven. In the area there are lot of nice restaurants. Companhia das Culturas is definitely a place where we would like to come back.

A quiet oasis in a great area of the Algarve. We loved the common spaces -- the library, dining area, open pool space (with shade for those full-sun afternoons), and especially the cork room for doing yoga in the early morning as the sun rises. The generous, fresh breakfasts on offer were a real highlight for us. Melissa and Betty were terrific hosts. The location is ideal for touring nearby beaches, restaurants, and historical spots.

We stayed 4 nights at this beautiful, peaceful place. The room was comfortable and clean, although a little tight. (Room 2, with 2 levels). |Breakfast was delicious, fresh variations each day, with seasonal home made ingredients.|I would suggest a car would make it easier to explore the area. |There are towels provided for beach/pool, also beach shades and umbrellas.|Overall lovely explerience.
