The Best Coffee Shops in Vancouver, Washington | Eater Portland

"Compass is known for its excellent coffee and stellar espresso drinks, which are served at its stylish downtown cafe and the roastery just to the north on St. Johns Road. The food menu at the downtown space includes pastries from Baron Patisserie, Spielman Bagels, and a short menu of sweet and savory toasts on bread from Cafe Olli and fits with its motto that coffee is culinary." - Rachel Pinsky

Best Cafes Between Portland and Seattle | Eater Seattle

"While Compass has several locations in the Portland-Vancouver area, the main location and roastery is located in NE Vancouver. Here, one will find a wide variety of light to dark roast coffees from all over the world, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, and Sumatra. And one must not forget the refreshing cold brew lemonade and iced americanos with sweet and salty cream." - Seiji Nanbu

I had an incredible experience here! The staff were so friendly and helpful, especially as I was choosing between so many good options. The bacon cheddar jalapeño croissant was absolutely delicious, and my chai was fantastic. They make their drink flavorings in-house, and I tried the one with honey, vanilla, and paprika--it had such a delightful kick of flavor. This spot is perfect for relaxing and soaking up life. If you're downtown, it's a must-visit.

Beautiful warm cozy coffee shop vibe. Pretty spacious with tables and booth settings. Good matcha and cappuccino. Service is good. Beautiful latte art~♡

Google
Coffee shop review: Overall I give compass is 8/10, I tried every coffee shop in Vancouver, Wa and give a honest review for many who are traveling. I have been to this shop since 2018, even been to their other location in St John & Portland (pdx location no longer available ). Compass coffee has by far the best tasty coffee/ espressos/matcha and makes the most perfect art on top of your drink. I wanna say the coffee shop itself has been growing, it’s become a busy place where many go to study and having good time with friends. Many years ago it was such a small local coffee shop and as the years are passing by they are getting more customers day by day . I’m happy to know that they are doing amazing, I do say the space is starting to become too small and there are less barista to beat the crowds coming in. I would recommend them getting a third location or even so expanding their shop to fit more people and consider hiring more baristas to help the many orders. I say if you new to town or visiting for a while, this shop is amazing and highly recommend but know Sundays are super busy and afternoon are too. You are lucky if get there during a slow times but it’s more of a luck if you find a good table or seat when it’s always packed.

Google
Best coffee in Vancouver! ☕ Compass nails espresso & matcha with perfect latte art. 😍 Busy vibe, great for meetings, but Sundays are packed. Space feels small—needs more staff & a bigger spot. 8/10, a must-visit! 🌟

Google
So this is the place downtown where the masters of the universe actually do meet! Where deals are made and meetings held and great poets dip their metaphorical pens in metaphorical ink! The Chai was piping hot and delicious, the place was full, but not too loud and we felt no pressure to rush our nefarious meeting. The place felt alive and relaxed. The thing about Compass is, they take their coffee seriously and because of that, a lot of the other stuff falls into place. They don’t have to act hip, being good at something confers hipness like sunrise confers morning. While I was having my business meeting at Compass, while I was growing within the community, I could look around and see meetings and friends, students and workers, I could see a vibrant section of the community that had found a home smack in the middle of downtown Vancouver. I’ll probably start having more meetings there myself as well.

Google
Cool coffee shop with a large menu of teas ans coffee plus bakery treats. Cutely decorated for holiday season; this place is quite busy.. you’ll have to be in line for 5-7 min but the service is fast. Staff is courteous. Indoor seating only. We tried caramel latte and spiced chai latte, and liked both. They have non-caffeinated drinks too.

Google
I tried a coffee, it was really good It’s an amazing atmosphere to come do homework, I saw a lot of people with computers 💻

Google
I was in town for one day so this was along my walk. There’s plenty of seating inside and outside the cafe. The service was friendly and fast. I was handed a latte with beautiful art and a smooth, robust flavor. I sat outside to soak up the day and reset. Great business.

Yelp
Exceptionally excellent customer service - polite, patient and helpful. Very clean and attractive environment with ample seating and work space. Food was lovely and drinks were great!

Yelp
I'm disappointed to say that the quality has significantly decreased. They are often out of pastries, beverages, and the coffee has been inconsistent. Service was once fast and friendly but now it seems slow, unprofessional, and aloof. The barista was sniffing shots with his nose practically touching the espresso then poured it into empty cups, letting it sit (get bitter) while prepping milk for 3 other beverages. One of the two baristas dumped water for my pour over before walking off to have a conversation with friends even though there was still a line of customers. By the time I received my coffee it was lukewarm and bitter. I definitely didn't leave feeling that they enjoyed making coffee or people for that matter. Lastly, the owners should clearly mark the floor or hang an "order here" sign because several customers were waiting only to be told that they were in the wrong area. Overall, it was just a super disappointing visit.

Yelp
Monkey bread muffin and ocean bun was delicious warmed up. Coffee was pretty good too. Great customer care and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with a great vibe. My drink was tasty and the service was great. Inside was a bit crowded but there was also an outdoor seating option for those willing to brave the cold this time of year.

Eddie R.

Yelp
Sad to say, this will be our last time here. We've been coming here for the last two years. Used to be vibrant with music playing. In the past we've had several instances of warm or cold coffee. This time they did not disappoint. Both of our coffees were lukewarm. Also, the in-house coffee mugs are smaller and the price went up. Service was fine but I don't blame the workers. I blame the owners for not providing the staff with the proper equipment to keep your coffee HOT. How hard is this? Especially with a price increase and smaller mugs. Do better.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way out of town and it was okay. The coffee wasn't spectacular. The wait was quite long. My sister got a breakfast burrito and she really liked it. I got my kids a couple muffins and chocolate milk. The muffins were vegan and gluten free... they were awful. I eat gluten and am not a vegan, so maybe if I was they would have tasted fine. The inside was inviting and they had a nice outdoor area. We probably won't make an effort to go back.

Yelp
Honestly the coffee was not very good. But the spot is so cute, with lots of light and seating. The service was okay, nothing stand out. The baristas were not super chatty, but there to get their job done. It was busy so that's fair. I wish there were more fun latte flavors. The latte itself was pretty bitter. I wish the milk was creamier. It was $6.75 but not worth that. Maybe I'm just too much of a coffee snob?

Yelp
Stopped in with friends earlier tonight because this was the only coffee place open past 3pm. It was busy and full of people. Staff was not friendly and didn't acknowledge us. Our hot coffees we received were not even hot. They were barely even warm. Super underwhelmed and not impressed at all. Didn't even taste that great. Definitely could work on their customer service skills. Will not be turning.
google avatar

Penny S.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee in Vancouver! I've bought beans for my coffee snob son-in-law and myself, as well as enjoyed a cup and a pastry in house. They are always busy but the wait isn't too long normally. I'm a creamy girl so I like to order breves. Theirs is very good. I ordered a buttery sticky bun that they warmed up for me. Friendly baristas too!
google avatar

Corrie C.

Yelp
Good coffee, near my office. Friendly service! Consistent service. Not many places too choose from downtown V
google avatar

Mara C.

Yelp
Came here for a cup of coffee based on great reviews. I had an americano and hubby had a latte. My Americano was lukewarm and the taste was just horrible. One of the worst coffees I've ever tried. Tasted burnt and sour. Hubby's latte was just alright. Atmosphere wasn't my cup of tea. Service was pretty slow.
google avatar

Mariko K.

Yelp
I'm a decaf girlie and I got the one of the best decaf americanos here. Vibe is chill, service was friendly.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop in the area. Baristas are great & coffee is amazing. They also have a great variety of foods to choose from. You won't regret coming to Compass!!
google avatar

Yasaman E.

Yelp
Amazing little coffee spot. We ordered their dirty chai and vanilla latte. Lots of different milk options (alternative milks) and huge espresso and tea menu. Seating is limited on a Saturday but lots of light and some wall plug in options for studying
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Solid coffee. Decent atmosphere. Friendly baristas. Price is wild. The most expensive coffee shop I've been to. I mean...Blue Bottle? Intelligentsia? Stumptown? Heart? You name it. I ordered a 12oz iced mocha w/Oat milk. $8.50.
google avatar

Yelp
When my family and I were in town visiting relatives, my mission was to checkout coffee shops in the area. Compass was close to our airbnb and was recommended by our host and brother-in-law. Their recommendation was spot on. I base my judgement off my favorite specialty drink...the vanilla latte. When made properly, there's a balance of espresso and vanilla syrup. When it's not, either the espresso is overpowering or there's little to no espresso and syrup (I don't like to drink warm milk). It's safe to say the drink was to my liking (thank you baristas). Service was pretty good. Both times my husband and I visited it was busy. It was standing room only when we walked in. The line moved fairly quickly (knowing why I wanted helped a lot and we didn't have time to sit take in the scenery) though.

Amanda R.

Yelp
I've gone in here multiple times before getting a tattoo across the street and each time the staff has been so uppity and rude. Just giving off mean girl energy with zero warmth or customer service. Definitely don't give off girl's girls vibes. The food/coffee was fine but not worth the terrible service.
google avatar

Marissa L.

Yelp
Everything was amazing here! The inside was beautifully decorated for the holidays. They had a nice seasonal selection of food and drinks. I had the Van Peppermint mocha which had a toasted marshmallow on top. I usually don't like peppermint mochas as they're overly sweet but this was perfect. I got the pumpkin spice muffin and that was yummy. Everything was quick to come out even with how busy it was.
google avatar

Nick G.

Yelp
I've seen a lot of good reviews of this place so decided to try it. it's a cute coffee shop on the corner and the inside is decorated nicely.. the coffee shop was crowded The Cappuccinos were good but sloppy. For a coffee place in a place as close to Portland you just hold them to a higher standard. In terms of customer service: nothing to rave about.. the employees were talking amongst themselves and we waited for them to come and ask us if we were ready to order.. Overall: I'd give another coffee shop in town a go next time I'm out for my morning cap

Yelp
Loveeeee them all so much. Best of the best you guys are fam to so manyyy. You guys are the best You guys are the best You guys are the best You guys are the best You guys are sunshine in ma world .

Yelp
While me and my gf were waiting for the 105 we saw this cute coffee shop and decided to try it out. The interior design was amazing, giving it a unique vibe to hang out with others or study. The service was also good. I got a cappuccino which was very good. However, the cup gave off a unique taste. Not so much so that it ruined my cappuccino but enough for me to notice. As for my gf, she was upset at the small menu selection.
google avatar

Ashley Q.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop with great coffee, always busy so be prepared for a little crowded, but busy for a reason I guess. I really like their house matcha and breakfast burrito. Little pricey tho.

Kathryn A.

Yelp
Compass reliably has the best coffee in Vancouver. Stop by to pick up deliciously roasted and ethically sourced coffee beans for home, and stay for the delicious coffee brewed by knowledgeable baristas. This is an adorable spot with indoor and outdoor seating that's perfect for studying or meeting up with friends.
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
Super cute coffee spot! Yummy drink and pastry options ! I love the large seating area in the middleZ also, they have high chairs which was a huge plus for me considering that i have littles . Great customer service too, will have to go back for some seasonal drinks
google avatar

Janel A.

Yelp
Great coffee shop near Esther Short Park. The interior is cute and the coffee and food are good. Service here has always been great-- friendly folks working. Definitely worth checking out before the market or whenever you need a bit of pick-me-up during the day.

Louis W.

Yelp
I give this place 2 stars because the coffee is ok, but it's way overpriced and the service is terrible.. I had been told the service was bad, I find out why.. to the girls that work there, I have a novel idea.. how about you actually do your job instead of texting on your phone.. I know your social media is probably important to you but there's a line of people trying to spend their money waiting for you to update your status Bit of a fail
google avatar

Rashi T.

Yelp
This has been my go-to in the neighborhood and seems to be for others too based on the number of people I see in there every time. Cute-relaxed vibe and there is plenty of space and seating. They have a good mix of industrial yet warm décor elements and makes the whole place look very inviting .The coffee is good albeit overpriced for the small size of cups they use. The staff is efficient even though I do not find them particularly friendly. The baked goods have been a hit or miss kind of situation for me here but I like that they have some fun and unique options to try .
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
I ordered a cappuccino from here. It was solid and I would definitely be interested in trying more of their coffees. It's kinda intimidating walking in not knowing how it all works. It's something that a lot of coffee shops struggle with in my opinion. The staff does a good job bringing you in and helping you with the order process. I also ordered a parfait, which was a great snack after a vacation full of snacks and treats.
google avatar

Rose D.

Yelp
We popped in for a quick coffee and drank it there. We ordered a small mocha & a medium Goldie latte (turmeric latte with house-blend of many other spices as well). Service was quick, but both of our beverages were just lukewarm as soon as we received them, so perhaps the milk wasn't properly heated first. The both tasted good, other than the temperature. And if you like a spicy chai, you'll enjoy the taste of the Goldie.

Leanne C.

Yelp
They have gluten free pastries I wish was more out for display! I wish they clarified that my matcha latte was iced and foamy. I was surprised the ice lasted so long and didn't water it down, but I'd prefer it hot. The service was fast, as soon I was done ordering it was already available on the counter Cute vibes, kind of confusing where to order because of the counter placement. But it's a fun place to go
google avatar

Hailee M.

Yelp
I really enjoy coming to this coffee shop for a latte while I work from my laptop. The ambiance is nice and there are enough places to sit and nestle in. The coffee is also delicious! I do enjoy the pastries, though I wish they would warm them up. I've also found their WiFi to not be dependable which will deter me from coming here to do my telecommute. Other than those few things, this place is great!

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Exceptional coffee and over the top awesome employees named Brian and Kaylee. They were outstanding and had an incredible energy. We own our own coffee shop in Las Vegas so we appreciate good coffee and especially the experience having employees treat us so genuinely.

Yelp
I loved the coffee!! Super good ! Beautiful interior and decor, nice cozy. Definitely coming back

Yelp
Awesome service everything. beautiful interior. super friendly workers, I believe one of them I see all the time in a baseball cap is andrew. he loved me and my boyfriend's cat so much he introduced his lovely daughter to him. heart warming!!!!!! Good espresso, good tea, pet friendly, beautiful location. their other location is also dope; super authentic and old timey.
google avatar

Artem R.

Yelp
So totally love this place but today I am sad because I ordered their sugar cookie latte expecting a bite sized sugar cookie to come with it and since their fazing out the drink they aren't making the bite sized cookie for the drink any more. This makes me sad. I should've ordered the Sugar and Spice instead. Don't advertise the cookie if your not giving the cookie please and thank you.

Yelp
My favorite spot in Vancouver downtown, I've been coming here for 5+ years. Not only do I come here for a good cup of a honey latte. Great vibes with the barista, & the vibes are always the best here. Highly recommend

Yelp
Last year I decided to try as many new coffee places in the portland vancouver area as I could and I have tried a few dozen of them. Compass is my number one spot to go. It's a quaint little coffee shop in downtown Vancouver and it gets really busy on the weekends so go early if possible. The baristas are awesome, super helpful and patient. I get the hot oat vanilla latte and it is the best I've ever had. I've also tried a few seasonal drinks and I cannot wait for the peppy van mocha that is one of the drinks they have around Christmas. Go here!

Haley W.

Yelp
One of the best coffee shops around Vancover. Staff was friendly and the coffee was unique and very good!
google avatar

Jerrel T.

Yelp
A coffee shop with a decent black coffee that doesn't taste burnt or watered down is hard to come by. But I've been pleasantly impressed by Compass Coffee. Their lattes and other drinks hold up pretty well too. The shop is small so good luck finding a place to work, read, or have a coffee date during morning hours. Customer service can on occasion be inconsistent and I've even experienced long waits at an empty counter with a line, so be prepared grabbing coffee when heading to work. But hey, it's a small coffee shop, with good coffee, so long lines and short staff days happen. Be pleasant to staff and they'll treat you right.

Venessa G.

Yelp
Absolutely the best coffee shop in the Vancouver area. From the best coffee, to the greatest people and environment
google avatar

Evelyn B.

Yelp
Hot chocolate was spot on and so good and I've never had such a moist pumpkin donut in my life. It was so good.

I L.

Yelp
extremely disappointed about the service the barista was very rude very... I simply asked if they offer a mocha Frappuccino and/or if they have any whipped cream to add to my coffee, and her response was that someone that was disgusted and very short and walked away! Eight dollars for a 16 ounce iced cup of coffee, hard pass for next time maybe they should focus on better Customer Service.
google avatar

Jodi R.

Yelp
This place used to be my go to, but it has gone way downhill. Food options are poor, it's loud and crowded, and freezing! They have the door wide open in 40 degree weather and weren't receptive to multiple people asking them to close it. The coffee is fine, but I'll go somewhere with better ambiance from now on.
google avatar

Brenna H.

Yelp
I stopped through here on a trip back to Seattle late in the afternoon because I needed some extra energy. I got a 12 oz oat milk latte with their muscovado sweetener (I had to ask what that was!). I really wasn't expecting too much, just an average latte, but I must say it was probably one of, if not the best, latte I had ever had. It wasn't too strong or too oat milky but I could still really taste the espresso and the complexity of it. It was amazing! I was seriously impressed and definitely will be back.
google avatar

Nicolette S.

Yelp
The coffee here is very very good and the food looks like it's definitely worthy of the try. I went on a Saturday morning around 9am and it was medium busy in there. Half the seats were being used and there were a few people in line. We ordered two lattes and it took about 25-30 mins from when we entered to get our drinks. That is way too long for only a few people in line and not being packed. The guy making drinks spent more time on his phone than preparing orders. They move at a very leisurely pace so I will potentially be back if I'm not in a rush but not somewhere you want to go when you have somewhere to be or want to stay on any sort of schedule.
google avatar

Anita A.

Yelp
I have been a customer for a few years and stop by when I get the chance whilst in town. Can definitely say that their coffee is always 100% and I've tried different things in their menu; I've never had any disappointments! Their staff is super friendly and is a really nice place to have a hangout with a few people or just to come and read a book! (:
google avatar

Andrea G.

Yelp
I had to remind myself to make a review because of how much I loved the coffee beans. Amazing coffee and a great selection. I was able to make some awesome cappuccinos at home with these beans.. can't recommend enough ! In store, I love love love the vibes. The staff was so kind and you can tell they know coffee. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere through and through.

Yelp
1 star off because they let animals into the establishment. Great coffees and they sell bagged coffee as well as equipment for making it at home. Nice vibe, cool location, sweet staff, and mellow espresso. We tried lattes and enjoyed the flavor of the coffee very much. Sadly, I can't return as I have severe allergies to animals. May I suggest animals stay outside on the patio? :)
