The Essential Montreal Caribbean Restaurants

"Chef Michael Lafaille may have moved the headquarters for his restaurant to Verdun, but his mission remains the same: Serving honest Haitian food at great prices while making a point out of hiring staff with disabilities — particularly those with sight problems, much like Lafaille, who did a stint at the dining-in-the-dark restaurant O Noir." - JP Karwacki, Eater Staff

25 Best Restaurants in Montreal | Condé Nast Traveler

"Kwizinn is a fun, brightly-lit space serving up Haitian favorites. The vibes here are Caribbean in all the right ways; flavors are luscious, meats slow-cooked, and sauces on the spicier side—that's how these recipes were passed down to chef-owner Michael Lafaille. Specialties include: tassot cabrit (marinated goat); cubed, marinated griot pork; authentic, steaming-hot Haitian accra fritters; deep-fried crispy red snapper; and, this being Montreal, a Haitian take on poutine made with plantains and lobster. Even if you're not a big dessert person, make sure to try the house made donuts, served with a big dollop of mascarpone banana cream. They're simply out of this world. The fun atmosphere, indulgent plates, and abundance of rum punch makes this a perfect launching point for a fun-filled night exploring Verdun." - Todd Plummer, Isa Tousignant

The Best Restaurants in Montreal’s La Petite-Patrie - Eater Montreal

"If Plaza St Hubert’s ongoing infrastructure upheaval has stopped anyone from venturing to Kwizinn to pick up an excellent burger with a plantain bun and special djon-djon black mushroom rice, they can now order via UberEats. Also on offer: herring kòde patty, tassot cabrit (goat marinated with herbs and spices), and créole lambi (spicy conch meat), plus a decent selection of vegetarian options. Dishes are also available for takeout." - Eater Staff

One of the best whole fried fish ive ever had. I was wondering why the high price, but i get it. It can truly feed two as there was so much meat. The restaurant is a bit a tiny but the service was very homely and authentic. Unfortunately they did not have the banana beignets or i would've eaten those down. All else was really good.

Really nice lady behind the counter. Very big portion of food. Really tasty too. Would definitely come again

Another time for exotic food. I really enjoy such new experience. This restaurant is for Haiti meals. It should be noticed that they are mainly for delivery so the eating inside is not that perfect compared to others. Anyway the service is good and they even offered me a free drink. I ordered the dish with fish, which is the most expensive dish I think. To be honest, even if I am not afraid of the bones of the fish, the fried fish is too hard and tough for me even if it tastes not bad. I am doubt that the native canadien would enjoy this fish. It is an interesting food but it is not appropriate for the price.

They usto be good but unfortunately went downhill. Placed order with uber. They forgot a griot plate. Apology accepted from person on the phone. Restaurant never replied to me for the refund. So I reached out to Uber instead. The problem came also afterwards when we ate the meal, shared one plate since one was missing. Their was literally 3 small pieces of Griot and rest was fatty pieces on top of tons of cold rice. And few pieces of iceberg lettuce with no dressing, literally just old lettuce. Pikliz not spicy not fresh. Worst off is the macaroni salad was rotten. My husband and I spit it out of our mouths and threw it all in the garbage. Never ordering from them again. Sorry you lost us as customers. Asked uber for a full refund, they are resolving the issue. But no response from restaurant. Update: uber solved the refund, nothing from restaurant FYI my husband got diarrhea from the food so AVOID

Google
Its good food but ridiculously expensive for the very small serving. At the phone, the woman mentioned a price and when my boyfriend went to pick up the dish she increased the price for no good reason...

Google
Cute small restaurant, Emphasis on small, so don't expect to be comfortably seated and do expect to wait a lot for your table even when reserved at a specific time. Would've earned 4 stars if not for the Lambi: don't order it! it's a signature Haitian dish, it's like caviar for Haitian, yet, they had the worst I've ever tasted. By far, the worst! and it's their most expensive thing on the menu. I wasted my money. The other stuff are quite delicious though. oh and don't order the souffle, its the most expensive entree and its tiny, the smallest. Overall, except for the Lambi, it's a great Haïtien food experience, but bit too pricey.

Me and my wife stumbled upon this gem while visiting Montreal for the first time. Plaza Creole was great! The food had the authentic Haitian taste from my homeland. We also had the opportunity to speak with the owner for a while who was nice and welcoming. Check this place out if you want good Caribbean Haitian cuisine in an environment that lends itself to authenticity. It won’t disappoint. Thanks again Plaza Creole!

Google
Comptoir Plaza Creole delivers a truly magical experience with their fresh fried chicken. The crispy exterior gives way to tender, flavorful meat that satisfies the palate in every bite.

Yelp
OKAY. I have no idea where to start but ... all I can say is that I'm literally salivating as I'm re-looking at these photos LOL My husband and I were in Montreal for a trip, we're from Vancouver and have never tried Haitian food before. We're now Obsessed and a little upset because we can't find the same food back home?! The only downside is that everything is in French, and you order through an iPad, no servers at the front to assist. BUT other than that, the food is SO worth the tiny bit of confusion lol Honestly, I don't know why you're still reading my review. Get your butt over there, you will not regret it!!!!

Yelp
I read the reviews of this restaurant on Yelp and decided to check it out...it is located on busy St Hubert st near the Beaubian metro station. The place is very small, just one table that will sit 2-3 people and about 5-6 high stools, where you can sit and eat by the window. I arrived and after looking at the menu, I ordered the fried pork (Griot porc) with rice and beans, fried plantains, salad and the Pikliz..it was about $16.75 for the full meal. The plate was big...lots of rice, chunks of fried pork and sides....the pork was a bit on the dry side, so I poured some of the sauce on it....the rice and beans was really good. The fried plantains were not hot nor crunchy/crispy. Not a fan. The salad was fresh. Overall not a bad choice if you are in this part of town but not my favorite Haitian spot.....

Yelp
Good food! Definitely a carry-out based business. Small restaurant- only about 5 seats available for dine in. I ordered the Griot plate ($19 CAD) which came with rice, tostones (twice-fried green plantains), and side salad. I upgraded the rice to Djon Djon rice (mushroom based rice) for an extra $1. The portions were huge. My meal came with 6 large chunks of fried pork. I was VERY hungry when I went to this restaurant and still could only eat 3 pieces of pork. The pork was very tender. I could tell it had been well-seasoned and likely marinated overnight. It was very crispy. It was served over a heaping bed of Djon Djon rice which was a little more flavorful than white rice. Also included were tostones which were good. The dish included a side salad which was much-needed to break up all the fried goodness and carbs. Lastly, included was a small container of a tomato based vinaigrette sauce which I dipped my pork in but wasn't necessary. I would've preferred lime or Mojo sauce. I give it 4 stars (instead of 5) because the food made me feel a little on the heavier side after I ate. Which is logical given the portions but it definitely wasn't the healthiest meal I've ever eaten. Overall, I recommend for an authentic Haitian meal (on a cheat day).

Yelp
Kwizinn is a really great environment to be in! There was live music and the place is really cute. My family and I are Haitian so we were really excited to try it but I wouldn't quite call this authentic Haitian food. It was a bit more of like a quebecois/Haitian mix. It's also a bit overpriced for what it was. The drinks were super strong though, loved them! The staff was really friendly and nice but none of them were Haitian so they were confused about some of the things we were asking them lol. The woman owner knew a bit of kreyol though! I think it'd be nice if they did hire some more Haitian staff. Also the waitress cut open the coconut for us so we can eat the inside like we do in Haiti! I would definitely come back for the environment and drinks!

Yelp
This place does to-go during post-Covid economic relance and we were blown away! Everything was so flavourful, the chicken and pork were juicy and tender... this place is definitely a new favourite. Easy walk to a nearby park with picnic tables!

Yelp
When I discovered their warm looking and welcoming spot in the Plaza St. Hubert area it was the opposite of typical hot Caribbean weather, but I still had to stop in for a quick snack (as I'd heard some good things). You may notice (as I did), that there are not menus out front or on the windows whatsoever, but they do have a Haitian flag, a beer poster and some music playing; which was pleasant. They did have a touch screen menu in front of the counter which was fun to scroll through (the choices made me even more hungry). After speaking with the gentleman at the counter who happily didn't get frustrated with me for only wanting a snack. Abdul suggested their Macaroni salad, which despite being a cold dish turned out to be beyond your average bent noodles in a cup with a little mayo mixed in (and was only $3 for a side portion). I won't give away any of the specific ingredients, but just know it's unique in a good way. Note: Due to the current protocols I ate outside, with freezing hand, but still enjoyed it; and was worthy of the five stars, especially with excellent tunes keeping me moving. Their Chef (Evy - hope I got the spelling right) concurred that one of my ingredient guesses was correct and mentioned one I couldn't place. It's amazing how tasty a "Creole" version of a basic dish can be. Final note: It's fitting how I chose to get a 'quick' snack at their 'express' location without even knowing.

Yelp
My favorite part about this restaurant is that the tasting platter isn't that expensive seeing as how it's for two people and it's very filling. I highly recommend it because you get to try a little of everything. My favorites were the goat and the grillot. The pikliz and their spicy mayo were delicious too and I also obsolutely loved the gratiné de mirliton (I don't know what this is called in English). The staff were also super friendly and accommodating to my GF's allergies. I'm looking forward to coming back here and trying their other dishes.

Yelp
Wow! Definitely a must go place. Their griot was flavorful and so tasty. The pikliz add such an amazing spicy tang to the meat and rice. The portions are awesome. On Saturdays you can try their djon djon rice. The Haitian Patties were delicious flaky buttery crust with flavorful filling. Their spicy chale sauce was ayayay spicy..in a good way. Super easy online ordering system for pick ups. A bonus during these times. Definitely going back to try other items on their menu.

Yelp
Short version: Great Haitian food, superb service. This place is delicious and you should go! Long version: I heard about this place from a friend of a friend and decided to go on an early Wednesday evening. It was pouring raining and there was nobody on the street so we were the first people to sit down. As soon as we ordered the rain stopped more people came in. The decor is fresh with a summer island feel and was a welcome change from the dreary rain outside. The server greeted us with a smile en français and English. She answered our questions with good recommendations, and attentively checked in with us during the meal. She and the chef/owner (who we chatted with while paying at the end) were genuinely nice people and super easy to talk to. The meals are reasonably priced at $12-18 for mains and $2-5 for starters. Speaking of which, I had the Acra as a starter... Damn. No I mean DAMN. The fritters dipped in the sauce! THE SAUCE! It's super tasty with just a small bit of spice at the end from a Scotch Bonnet hot pepper. For the main dish, I got the Poulet boucané which is barbecued chicken. The quarter chicken came with beans and rice, plantains, a kind of choucroute salad, along with a dipping sauce for the chicken. So comforting and filling. :) My friend had the pork (which of course I tried a bite of) and it was amazing! Probably better than my meal (but you know, the grass is always greener, yada yada). I have no idea what restaurant that other reviewer Martin was eating at because it certainly wasn't Kwizinn. One last thing: if you order a drink, go for the Crémasse. It's kind of like Bailey's but with a subtle twist of cinnamon and coconut. Incredible and you won't regret it!

Yelp
Check out this spot on Saint Hubert as soon as we're done social distancing OR don't wait another second and order online. This plantain burger is so interesting and such a mix of exciting flavours: crunchy from the plantain bun ,spicy, well seasoned and smocky meat. Also , i really liked their baked potatoes! On the side note , do not expect a medium rare burger because thats the way they cook burger. -foodventuresmtl Gia

Yelp
(Thie review is meants as 3 1/2 stars) I saw the ads passing on my instagram feed and the photos really intrigued me. At first I was a bit hesitant as it is a little far for me and smack in the middle of winter, I'd rather just stay close (about that.... THEY'RE OPENING ONE DOWNTOWN SOON!!!! WHATTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!) but my friends' enthusiasm motivated me and so we went for dinner one week night The place is cute, has a nice vibe to it. It smelled delicious as we approached from outside and we were H.U.N.G.R.Y The staff was nice & friendly, service was swift. We took a few different things: the goat, the fish, the conch, etc. Everything was yummy. ***NOTE: the pikliz is hot af so try at your own risk! The only things that took the half star away for me was that I found there was not enough conch and the meat was just a little dry. But everything else was great! Looking forward to seeing the second one downtown!!!! :D

Yelp
I order the Griot. When Transferred to American dollars, the price was quite fair. My portion was humongous. (Can't say the same for my friend who ordered the same). You will absolutely need the dipping sauces for the meat, or it will taste try otherwise. But the star of the show for me were the plantain fritters. Those were the absolute best plantain I've ever had in my life! And I do not eat plantains. Seating is limited but the hostess is friendly like all Montrealers seem to be. This place is great for a quick bite.
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
Griot is pretty good, not horribly dry like some other places. Rice & peas is the highlight for me, it's different (in a good way) than other griot spots I've had. Cabri is also decent, although the one I got was a bit dry compared to say Meli Melo or Marabou.
google avatar

Yelp
We were a party of four. The waitress was so nice and polite. The food came super fast. Iam still thinking about those crispy plantains YUM. The musis playlist was impressive, with stayed for a solid hour after closing and they did not give us attitude or anything like that. I wanted to try the pain patate but i was too full to even bother. Cant wait to go back. Real food , nice decor. Iam sold

Yelp
My partner and I went here last night with 3 other friends. We had the Tasso Cabrit and the Plantain Burger. The rice was splendid, I have to say! The goat meat seemed a bit dry though, but tasted amazing! The meat patty inside the plantain burger is something we've been looking for a while, so juicy and fulfilling. As they don't take reservations if not for more than 10 people, the wait to get a table was long, so we moved to the patio and the weather wasn't that cold. I'm definitely going back there to try out other dishes.

Yelp
Full disclaimer: we came here with a coupon for 4 appetizers and 2 drinks because we are cheap people. So everything we ordered was pretty good, but nothing blew my mind. Our favourite was probably the chicken wings. More importantly, the portions were tiny! Yes, I understand what an appetizer is, but I didn't think we'd have to eat a second dinner afterwards. The drinks were delicious and pretty strong, nothing to complain about here. The restaurant was empty and service was friendly. Well situated if you live in the area. Wouldn't go back.

Yelp
oh my what a delicious experience with their food we've had. first off the portions are HUGE so don't you worry when you see 18$ and think it's tiny. nono. the chicken is amazing and also the pork. the sauce and the rice perfect combination!!! ugh so so good

Yelp
I was born and raised in Haiti, I now live in NY where I've tried almost all Haitian restaurants, I've been to south Florida countless times and have experienced most Haitian restaurants, I've tried Agrikol in Montreal as well and honestly almost none are a match for KWIZINN ---after a tour of black Montreal with a group, we stopped by and the service was impeccable, I asked the waitress to separate our meals from the alcoholic drinks which she did flawlessly , they had some sort of passion fruit juice that was AWESOME! The place is cozy? Prices are affordably reasonable & the food is very flavorful--whoever is in the kitchen knows what they're doing as my best friend who's a Haitian chef and was with us also approved of the food so definitely make them your first choice for island/Haitian food if you're in Montreal

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Kwizinn Express is wonderful. It's a cozy place that warms you up during a snowy winter night. The owners are very friendly and inviting. This was my first time trying Haitian cuisine, and it was awesome. I ordered the griot (marinated and fried pork cubes) with sticky rice & red beans, salad, crispy plantains, meat sauce, and pikliz (spicy slaw). The pork was juicy, crispy, and heavenly, and goes wonderfully with the savory meat sauce. The plantains had a great crunch, the salad was fresh and light, and the rice & beans beautifully complimented the pork. The pikliz packs a punch with its spice and acidity, and cuts through the richness of the pork. I left happy and with a full belly, and look forward to a return trip in the future. I hope they continue to do well!

Yelp
Very nice experience. Food was delicious! Atmosphere is very homey. I would highly recommend

Brogan S.

Yelp
YUM! I went for my friends birthday and we split the sharing platter. I would highly recommend! It's nice to go somewhere authentic!

Allison C.

Yelp
My husband and I shared the tasting menu for two people. The food was amazing, the staff was very friendly and the drinks great too! I would recommend getting the tasting menu, but make sure you're very hungry because you get a very large amount of food!

Abigail B.

Yelp
I've always ordered takeout from this restaurant without ever actually going but I went there for the first time a few weeks ago and it was remarkable! This is a Haitian restaurant with such beautiful decor, very tasty food and great service! The griot is probably the best I've had from a restaurant and they give pretty large portions for a good price.

Aube D.

Yelp
The rice was tasteless, patty had almost no meat in it, chicken was just aight. Overpriced... meh... not the best
