Minnie Bell’s Soul Food, Home to the Bay Area’s Best Fried Chicken, to Open New San Francisco Restaurant | Eater SF

"Expanding from its Fillmore location between Pine and Bush, Compton’s Coffee House is opening a second spot on Columbus Avenue in North Beach by taking over the long-vacant former Cafe Sputino/La Boulange space, with a post promising an opening sometime this summer amid a wave of new openings in the area." - Lauren Saria

Homemade vanilla syrup is a treat as well as the 2% milk since nonfat is not available. One size only. Would’ve liked mine a bit hotter but now I know! Overall delicious and nice young ladies working!

Google
Lovely local coffee spot—open earlier than most! Great coffee, friendly staff. Definitely recommend!

Jaye Aster B.

Google
Just a really nice airy coffee shop with a good mix of drink and coffee options. There is some seating. It didn’t feel overrun with tourists in long lines.

Google
I’m from Australia and we have great coffee at home. These guys know what they are doing. You can actually get a coffee in a proper ceramic mug! On this occasion, I had a cappuccino and it was brilliant. Well done ladies.

January 2025: Stopped by for a cup of coffee ☕. I normally like pour over coffee but this place only had drip on the menu. I was happy with my order. Was a very good cup of coffee. Will be back again. Maybe will buy their beans to make at home.

Google
This coffee shop gives off clean, warm and cozy vibes. Lots of tables and people working. Friendly staff. My go to is the oat milk lavender latte (light sweet). Iced!

Google
There are so many great coffee shops in North Beach. Compton’s is the Go-To for focused work/reading. Pretty much every table has accessible outlets. The WiFi is reliable. The music is soft. Awesome staff! Lot’s of people get their coffee To-Go as well.

Yelp
I'm a recent transplant from Brooklyn and I love that Compton's has Variety Coffee. Hands down the best Lavender Latte I've had in San Francisco. It's a great neighborhood spot in North Beach!
google avatar

Frank Lloyd W.

Yelp
The dude making coffee spends more time talking to his bros than working. Also, ridiculous for non dairy milk up charge. .

Yelp
Came on a warm Sunday afternoon around 11ish, no wait and plenty of seats We ordered 1. Iced Raspberry matcha latte: this is a pretty unique drink cause usually I see strawberry matcha latte, so this is a nice change. It was very fruity and not too sweet. Wish the matcha flavor was a bit stronger but overall, solid drink 8/10 2. Iced Vanilla latte: your typical vanilla latte, can't go wrong here. Strong coffee taste but still able to taste the vanilla 9/10 Overall great drinks to cool down! Would come back to try their other drinks and pastries!
google avatar

Yelp
In house made vanilla syrup is delicious. it was a treat since nonfat milk is not an option. One size only for drinks. Would've liked the latte a bit hotter, but overall delightful .

Yelp

Yelp
Very good lavender latte! My grandson also enjoyed the hot chocolate and both his almond croissant AND MY morning bun lolz. Nice, clean comfortable cafe where we enjoyed our drinks and pastries. Front counter help was funny and helpful and we witnessed him be very kind to an unhoused person
google avatar

Neikan M.

Yelp
Great coffee, amazing vibes, friendly service. Located in north beach around most of the action

Yelp
It's seems people who are inspired by Peets Coffee go start up another coffee company like the people who started Starbucks and also the person who started Compton's Coffee House. This Compton's Coffee House is located in North Beach. Inside it has a mix of digital nomads , locals, and tourist. It is a good place to have coffee and pastries. I got the vanilla mocha and it was a bit too sweet for me. The caffeine level of the mocha was low but it had a good taste. I got the croissant. The croissant tasted like a shopping mall handmade pretzel. I also got the Raspberry Matcha iced which sounds good but it was too sweet for me. The bottom of the drink felt like it was loaded with NutraSweet. If you want to be cognitively arouse Grab a cup of coffee with an extra shot at Compton's Coffee House

Yelp
Compton's Coffee House is a clean and spacious coffee spot with lots of seating! There's one large table in the middle of the store with several smaller tables littered throughout. Great space to work from! I was taking a stroll in the area & decided to stop by Compton's for my coffee fix. They gots lots of syrups to choose from and milk alternatives cost $0.75. I got the lavender latte & vanilla latte. The vanilla latte was the better one. Their vanilla syrup blends well with the oat milk and was frothed very nicely. The lavender latte was a little disappointing. Most coffee shops don't carry lavender on its menu so when it's available, I always get it. Compton's version tasted a little too floral for my liking & had that fake syrupy taste if you know what I mean. I do wish the coffee was stronger though. Overall, highly recommend if you need to quiet workspace with lots of outlets. Not your superb artisanal coffee but does the trick! There was no line and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Parking: HARD; no parking lot nearby. located on Columbus street in North Beach, sandwiched between Chinatown & Fisherman's Wharf, residential parking is hit or miss /:

Yelp
This is literally the best coffee in SF I try not to skip a day without coming in Ppl that works there are nice and friendly too

Yelp
Big fan of Comptons here! I usually stop in roughly every other week to get a chai or raspberry matcha. Sometimes a lemon poppy seed muffin if they still have some! Everyone who works here is super nice from the interactions I've had and always has a smile on their face! Typically clean and filled with people doing work during the week but can get pretty crowded on the weekends sometimes. I have heard some complaints that lattes need an extra shot here and that your drink quality really depends on who is making it. But overall the drink quality is pretty consistent when I come in. Their seasonal drinks are also great if one speaks to you! I do miss their cardamom latte and would love to see it on the menu all year round but still love the rotating seasonal choices!
google avatar

Yelp
If you're ever by Washington Square Park and you need a little coffee pick me up situation, Compton's is always my go-to. It's usually full on the weekend, but they have lots of indoor seating. If it's busy, you can head to the park with your drink. They offer such high quality coffee that always hits. My friend gets the matcha latte and loves it! I have to recommend my absolute fav (I am not sure if you can get this at other coffee shops) - a latte infused or espresso steeped with Earl Grey essentially an Earl Grey Latte. It's so unique and hits the spot for me. I've only got it here at Comption's. It's delicious, strong and just a unique coffee experience!
google avatar

Shivangi K.

Yelp
The peppermint hot chocolate? HITS! I wish I had gotten a size upgrade because it was so yummy and the perfect drink for the rainy weather. They also had a peppermint mocha and matcha! I also like that this Compton's location is very spacious and has a lot of seats. There is free wifi and a lot of people were working from there.
google avatar

Anchal A.

Yelp
After seeing holiday drinks on instagram, i finally made my way over here and I'm definitely gonna be back! Comptons is spacious with a lot of tables, restrooms, and a nice vibe overall! I got the peppermint mocha and it was delicious -- the peppermint was just the right amount, not overpowering. My friend ordered the peppermint hot chocolate which was also very good, not too sweet and very creamy. The coffee has to be some of the best I've had in the city! I will definitely be coming back to check out their other drinks like the lavender latte and orange blossom mocha :)
google avatar

Dani D.

Yelp
This is a very quiet and cute coffee shop, that is surrounded by other shops. There is lots to do in the area. Really enjoyed this Raspberry Matcha latte, service was friendly and quick. Don't have anything bad to say, but also didn't try enough things to give it a 5/5. Will be back :)
google avatar

Jacey D.

Yelp
Stopped here a few weeks ago when traveling for work. The matcha tea was delicious and so was the danish that I ordered. It was freezing in the cafe because they kept the door open the whole time we were there, so taking off one star because of that. I wish they had a larger selection of pastries too. Great matcha tea though!
google avatar

Rudy H.

Yelp
A really good coffee shop with laid back and friendly vibe. This is definitely a place to stop by and recharge when you're in the area. Local or tourists would equally find this coffee shop to be approachable, cozy and welcoming to all. I've had a hot regular latte, it was nutty, creamy and delicious to the last drop!
google avatar

Tatí A.

Yelp
Came here Saturday morning for a coffee & matcha at 8am the line was already to the door so that already tells you it's going to be good! The coffee was tasty and strong perfect amount of sweetness and strong it came out quickly and I loved the vibe of the coffee shop! The matcha was pretty good just wish they whisked it a bit more but other than that I would recommend & come back :)
google avatar

Lucy L.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries. A perfect place to come enjoy a drink and there is plent of seating. Drinks were simple and what you would expect from a standard coffee shop. The bacon croissant was different and pretty tasty. I wished the chocolate hazelnut was more flakey.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with plenty of workspace. The barista was helpful in giving suggestions on how to adjust the drinks since I wanted a flavored latte but not too sweet. Ended up getting a vanilla latte and a peppermint mocha half sweet. The vanilla latte was perfect! Smooth and creamy with a nice hint of vanilla and wasn't too sweet. The peppermint mocha was a bit light on the peppermint for my personal taste, but the sweetness was perfect. Highly recommend, especially if you're looking for a place to sit and work on a laptop for a bit.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Owned by an SF native who employs a fantastic team who enriches our North Beach community. Love that place!
google avatar

Bubba Y.

Yelp
A decent vibe, a decent cup. Love the North Beach area, I could sit on the bench outside and watch the people and the Waymo's go by all day long. Espresso had a nice tang to it, my scone was a bit flat in taste but filled me up. We'll be back.

Yelp
I LOVE Compton's Coffee House. This is a spot to gatekeep, but I won't to spread the wealth. Have outlets, wifi, easy seating, AND great coffee. What else could a working gal want? I was here the other day and convenient ran into my friend because we're both obsessed about this spot. Big fan of the Rose Cardamom Latte! But you can't go wrong with anything. All the staff are so kind and friendly as well. Truly a gem in the city.
google avatar

Angelina Z.

Yelp
Good coffee and a nice spot to work! The iced cappuccino was perfect and foamy, with a strong espresso flavor. There are outlets and lots of natural lighting. The only bad part was that the water cups tasted strongly like dish soap, so I'd recommend bringing your own bottle.

Yelp
You can dress up in all the 90s/y2k motorcycle jackets and low cut flared jeans in the world, but if you truly want the pre-smartphone close knit coffee shop experience, check out Comptons coffee. I was a patron during those 'Good Enough Ol' Days' and this is the closest thing to it I've found in this "dayanáge". Have you seen the movie Big Eyes? I haven't. But I heard it's about the beatnik art scene of 60s (?) SF North beach. Compton's embraces today's modern perks and that same 'they-did-it-that-way-for-a-reason' of this city's sorted past. I'm a modern woman who embraces both sides of the coin. Like any Gemini I never know which woman/wolf inside of me will open their eyes and step foot out of bed that day let alone which will enter any given doorway. Sometimes I'm a black coffee and don't take my sunglasses off. Sometimes I'm the iced raspberry matcha (try it you'll see) and leave a few euros I have leftover from my cruise as a tip so they think im quirky and cool. Im a Taurus, so unsurprisingly most of the time I am right in the middle, and for that I do the espresso tonic. Every walk of life vibes here: it doesn't matter if you're a They/them or a Has/been. If you do visit tell them Claire sent you- I want to plant the seeds of becoming something even beyond a regular. Thanks. --C

Yelp
This is the best coffee shop I've ever been to! The baristas are so nice, and the ambiance is amazing. Their raspberry matcha is the best matcha I have ever had. I dream about it at least once a week and have to come by every time I'm in the city. Their raspberry mocha is also beyond delicious. I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Neha D.

Yelp
Lovely space to work! The coffee is good, not great but also not bad. The raspberry matcha is tasty (and more tart than a strawberry matcha) but the matcha flavor/color is not strong (mine was a very light green as opposed to a vibrant deep green)
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Compton, just opened and brand spanking new places always draws me in out of curiosity. I also like supporting local businesses in my neighborhood knowing how hard it is for small business owners these days. SERVICE- 5 stars Anyone walking in was promptly greeted . Nice manners! Service is fast and efficient. PRODUCT Lavender Latte was delicious as is their pastries . I'm in love with their scone. 4 1/2 stars Been stopping by several times already. NOTE: a great place to catch up with your peeps . However, the times I've been at Comptons ... after putting my order in ... I noticed many people working there with computers out -- drinks long finished over 30 minutes or so-- while seeing new customers in pairs or more coming in trying to find seating is challenging as the turnover is slow. Perhaps there should be a time limit as a courtesy unless they purchase something else? Wishing great success!
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
Great cafe with lots of options. Tried their fall special cardamom rose black tea latte. It was perfect. It was only very lightly sweetened which is great if you don't like things too sugary. I also appreciated the unique flavor - a nice alternative to the pumpkin spice blitz happening across all cafes this time of year.

Yelp
I'm in town this week, and Compton's Coffee House has been such a great place to work from / get a break from being cooped up in my hotel room. Yes, there are outlets and Wi-Fi for customers. Bonus points for playing Bad Bunny. I got the lavender latte and vegetable scone. The latte was perfect, not too sweet. In retrospect, I should've asked for the scone to be warmed up. Still tasty though.
google avatar

Anny L.

Yelp
The perfect spot to catch up with friends or get some work done. Good service and decent coffee! Would come back to try their iced coffee next time!

KJ T.

Yelp
Come here for powerful coffee and do I mean powerful. I could really taste the flavor of the coffee, even with oat milk. I don't know who roasts their beans or if it's a combination of great roasting with an expert pull of the espresso, but this might be hands down, the best coffee I've tasted in San Francisco. A lot of coffees in SF taste burnt or are overly acidic but this coffee is neither. This coffee was nutty, earthy, with a slight hint of raspberry. Delicious. Plenty of seating to drink your Joe and devour a Starter Bakery pastry. When it gets warm, I imagine Compton's becomes a haven for those wanting to people watch or read a book.
google avatar

Sebrina S.

Yelp
I love coming here to study with a maple latte! The staff is super nice, and the vibe is lively yet productive. The coffee is super good and the pastries are solid as well.
google avatar

Grace O.

Yelp
Great spot to get work done (wifi and outlets), this place has good pastries from Starter Bakery and makes a lot of their syrups in house.

Isaac J.

Yelp
I don't write a lot of reviews, but I have to acknowledge the great experience I always have at Compton's in North Beach. I was just in this morning for my usual cortado, which is consistently among the best in the city. The space is beautiful, the service is always friendly and quick, and it's all around a great hang. Love you, Compton's! Keep it up!!

Neil G.

Yelp
First time here at Compton's. Attractive place. Lots of seating. Has the kind of long table where former strangers become friends. Attentive communicative guy behind the counter made a perfect double mocha. Yet another reason to move here.

Nina N.

Yelp
Was excited to see a Compton's open up in the area, but was unfortunately quite disappointed with the drinks. Both the iced vanilla latte and iced raspberry matcha latte were wayyyy too milky. You can immediately tell by the color of each :-( From looking around at the other patrons' matcha lattes, it seems to be inconsistent. Hopefully the recipes can be standardized a bit better and less milk will be used to highlight the actual tea and coffee flavors.
google avatar

Nors D.

Yelp
New place in the neighborhood. I went in for a coffee just before closing and was greeted by friendly staff that had no problem making me a drink and pleasantries even though it was clearly the end of the day for them. That's all well and good but the coffee was worth it, after it cooled down a bit. I'd recommend this place hope they do well.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Such a fun location! Love the first shop they opened so happy to see Compton's in a new neighborhood. Heather and Aidan were incredible, friendly and incredibly efficient on a busy Sunday. If you're looking for a bomb latte or drip coffee, check this place out!

Lynnette S.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop. Also a front for other local products which is great. Very popular place that could use a staff or two more to help it move a bit faster.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Great location, but more options needed. Compton's is off to a good start, but needs to expand beyond coffee and pastries. More cold beverage options will be great! You can easily turn me from a $10 / visit customer to a $20-30 / visit customer with a few more options
google avatar

Hairy L.

Yelp
This ain't the old La Boulange. Location and atmosphere is great. Their "drip coffee ", no. Their service attitude, meh. I'd go to Victoria across the street.
google avatar

Herman L.

Yelp
Visited for my first time on a Sunday. The drinks are great, I really enjoyed their iced mocha. The service was excellent as well. I was clumsy and knocked over one of the drinks I ordered when I went to pick it up. Their attitude was great and remade the drink for me. Definitely worth paying a visit if you are in the area and need some good coffee!

David C.

Yelp
So glad they came to North Beach. Awesome spot, great coffee (Variety beans). No frills.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Just like at the original Fillmore location, the staff here is always warm and friendly and the drinks are lovingly and perfectly crafted every time. The big difference is that this new location on Columbus is much more spacious and provides a generous amount of seating that is probably rare for any coffee shop in SF. Apart from about eight small tables for two, there is also a gorgeous long wood slab communal table. Only a cozy little couch corner would make it even better. The self serve water spout is a very thoughtful detail and WIFI seems to be available as well. Definitely a wonderful addition to what was already one of my favorite neighborhoods!
google avatar

Sergio L.

Yelp
Great coffee and a good chill spot I will def come back here. Great location too! Nice vibe

Rosie S.

Yelp
Pretty yum! First time I went I got the seasonal raspberry matcha which I can confidently say is a hard pass if you like matcha. Was wayyy too sweet and the raspberry flavor took over a bit too much for my liking. Decided to give it a second try given it's a coffee spot not a matcha spot and got a vanilla latte w/ soy milk. So good!
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
We stopped here looking for a good cup of coffee based on Yelp reviews and ratings and were not disappointed. The staff is friendly and helpful, the coffee (we had a drip) was great (best we had a week in SF) and we loved the vibe. We tried several other spots in the area and this one was the best.
google avatar

Maryann E.

Yelp
So far this is the best iced vanilla latte I've had during my visit to SF. Am I tasting a smidgen of cardamom? Whatever the secret is, every sip is pure magic to my palate.
