Our next stop on the "farewell to Carla tour" was Condado Tacos. To be fair, originally we planned on going to Atlas Tavern, but unbeknownst to me they're closed on Mondays (maybe they're like Garfield and don't do Mondays....), so we opted to try Condado because they were literally right around the corner.
Once again, eating at a toddler's dinner time of 4:30 pm has its perks, like no waiting to be seated, so that was a bonus. I brought Nugget with me to the last supper I'd be having with a friend.
We were seated pretty quickly. It was pretty quiet in there (I'm assuming due to the time or maybe because it was a Monday). The interior of Condado is pretty fun looking: bright colored aliens and robots adorn the walls. It really keeps a kid's attention.
I started with a Modelo Especial, Nugget ordered a "fancy water" AKA club soda, my friend got a beer (I can't remember which one), and we shared an order of queso.
Beers came out quickly. Our beers were cold and refreshing, which was great because it's been super hot here in the Midwest.
Our queso came out right after the beer. Houston, we have a problem. There was spice (paprika) and one lone jalapeno on the queso. I asked my friend to distract Nugget, so I could swiftly take it off. Hell hath no furry like a toddler that sees "spice" on queso. Phew, he didn't see anything, and dug into the queso. He really enjoyed the queso, so much so, that he had a queso beard by the time we finished.
I LOVED the queso. It was hot, smooth, silky, velvety goodness. If I could have taken a bath in it, I would have. Had I been in a room by myself, I would have drank the remaining drops of queso (don't judge, I'm pretty sure you'd do the same). The chips were delicious (crunchy/fried vessels for our beloved queso).
Onto food. Condado's ordering is a bit unconventional. While they have some recommendations, you really can choose how you want your tacos/burritos/bowls made. You choose everything from the type of shell, protein, salsa, cheese, etc. I opted for a bowl this time (rice base, pulled pork, lettuce, tomatoes, queso fresco, pineapple salsa). They don't have a kid's menu, but you can get a kid's quesadilla, which is what I ordered Nugget.
Everything came out quickly. I dug into my bowl. Wah Wah (cue game show music). The pork was bland. It really lacked any type of flavor. I couldn't even taste S and P (salt and pepper) on it. The rice tasted like your basic white rice. The pineapple salsa was good, but they could have been more generous with it, due to the low ratio of salsa to meat. All in all, the bowl was a disappointment.
I'm sure the quesadilla (or as Nugget refers to it as a quesadida) tasted fine, but he didn't touch it. He opted to eat a side of sour cream (sounds delightful, right?!?).
Pros:
-Interior is super cool and fun
-Queso is off the chain
-Chips were crunchy pieces of heaven
-Variety of items on the menu
Cons:
-Lack of overall flavor in the bowl
-Pulled pork was bland
Tips: Get a queso to go, so you can drink it in the privacy of your own home.
