I have seen this place open now for a little while and, initially, I didn't want to try it because of my own bias. I am more into the street tacos, authentic type place, myself. Me being actually Mexican, I have to be. Also there was a running joke with my friends when reasoning why anyone would want to eat at an Ohio based taco chain. Because when I think of Ohio, I think of tacos lol. Jokes and bias aside, I decided to try it. After all I do enjoy a Taco Bell on occasion -which we all know is not Mexican or authentic.
I work near by so I walked on over and the hostess was a bit curt and dismissive. I gathered she did not really want to be there working, but she sat me to my table. I asked to be seated outside because it was nice. Saying that they do have an amazing outdoor seating area. It faces Nelson Merry St. and I really love what the developers of Capitol View have done to transform the landscape.
The menu isn't at all complicated and I was eager to try it. I went into it blind not having read any of the reviews or anything. The only thing I had to go on was the occasional glance as I was walking past on my way back from Pokeworks.
I opted for 3 tacos. The waiter told me what to expect and I feel he did a good job saying so. I got the Cali Green, the Blue Dream, and Lucy's Fire.
The menu was a bit confusing because it said salsa was a paid item. I asked if chips were a paid item and he said no. Wanting to try a full experience, I ordered red salsa ($1.50) because the alternative would have been to simply eat dry chips.
The tacos are exactly what you think they are. My immediate thought, (and I made a note of this in my Apple Notes app right then and there so I didn't forget it), my immediate thought was that if you had ordered Taco Bell and took them home and added your own (better quality) ingredients like guacamole, etc. Thats what it is. They were good, don't get me wrong. If you want Taco Bell sized tacos with a few added ingredients then have at it. I realize they don't use that Taco Bell cheese or anything. The cheese they used was really good. But the base beef was just like Taco Bell. The shells tasted almost as if they used the same supplier as Taco Bell. I liked the fact that they wrapped them in tin foil. That was a nice touch. Are they worth $5.40? I am not sure. You know, with inflation as bad as it is, maybe they are. But to me given the choice, I would opt for Taco Bell when it comes to guilty pleasures. If I was invited back, I would probably only get 2 of them because of the sizing and price. Charging extra for plain salsa is a bit cheeky as the Brits say. Maybe its tourist tax though, I don't know.
