How Ojai Became America’s New Culinary Hotspot | Vogue

"Named for the massive California bird that nearly went extinct, the marquee restaurant at Hotel El Roblar delivers what chef Brandon Boudet calls “California‑Mexico modern”: a massive, accidentally vegan king oyster mushroom in green mole co‑created with Chef Jesus Duron (formerly of two‑Michelin‑starred Pujol) that’s rich without being gloppy; a goblet of jumbo shrimp cocktail; tacos of butter‑tender smoked ribs with miso pineapple butter; and a salad of melon, tomato, and Chicatana ants—“my version of prosciutto and melon”—all capped by piping‑hot churros with a fudgy sauce whose bitter, smoky edge perfectly reins in the sugar." - Lauren Mechling

This Charming New Hotel in Ojai Captures the City’s Enduring Mystique | Vogue

"Inside the hotel, the conservation-themed spot hums with a personal, local sensibility that’s drawing repeat visits from Ojai residents as well as Angelenos. Executive chef Brandon Boudet leans into the region’s bounty with Mexican-inspired plates—like a local tomato and melon salad with Chicatano ants and Santa Barbara sea urchin tamales—while the vibe nails the brief of being a great place to have a cocktail and dinner, a place for people to connect." - Christina Pérez

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: August 25 | Eater LA

"Inside Hotel El Roblar, this newly opened restaurant from the Little Dom’s team showcases chef Brandon Boudet’s influences from Mexican foodways, California history, and the local farmers market. Plates include king oyster mushrooms atop a verdant, herb-packed molé and, most memorably, a tomato and melon salad whose speckled appearance comes from a pre-Hispanic ingredient: chicatana ants. Tomatoes from Beylik Farms and melon hunks from Weiser Family Farms speak to Ventura County’s agricultural richness, while the ants add an almost prosciutto-like saltiness to a salad dressed simply in lemon and olive oil — in short, a dish not to miss that will beckon between bites of the suadero vampiro or crispy duck leg carnitas." - Eater Staff

I really wanted to love this place! Love the decor and I love little Dom’s in LA so I was excited to try. Service was great but the food really fell short. Not one dish I ordered was tasty. Everything lacked flavor and was overly sauced. Did not have an authentic Mexican flavor. Really hope the chef can adjust because otherwise it is a fabulous place :)

Such a super cool place, very local vibe with local produce, local wines. I love this place! The menu is thoughtful and everything I had was super tasty. Nice

As a local, I was dying to check out what was made out of “The Oaks”, and to say the least, I was pleasantly impressed. The rustic, cozy interior was amazing. The host Corrin was fantastic, the server Rilee was very helpful and enthusiastic about serving us and the food was so fresh and something that this town needed. Everyone else I met that I didn’t get the names of also treated me like family. Thank you to the owners for not ruining this gem and making into something special.

We had reservations, restaurant was empty, and they had us wait for over 10 minutes for our table. They sat us outside where we were hounded by mosquitos. Jicama salad was good and came out within 5 minutes, then we waited another 25 before any other food or drink made it to our table. Tacos came out and are so insanely expensive and mediocre. One taco for $18… Drink orders were screwed up… nothing custom, ordered directly off their menu. I mean, really just one thing after the other. It was like no one here had ever been to a restaurant before.

Cool spot. Not a ton of seating in the bar. Worth checking out if you want to hang out in ojai.

Build out = Incredibly perfect. Legit salsas. Outstanding, really. Whatever chef they have is on point. We only did drinks, guac/salsas and a potato taco (which I had to savor since each bite was $3.50 with tax). It was exceptional and I hope they keep up this culinary standard. In time I predict they will lower their prices. The bartender... a blonde woman... ooof. Can't tell if she's trying to be eccentric or if it's natural, but we found it annoying. She's a "contrarian"... fought us on everything we said. Call me crazy, but when you're paying that much for food and drinks the expectation is that the service will be kind/polite/respectful. The place was empty and we couldn't get a table. The host let us know that all the tables were booked which is why we chose the bar, then went somewhere else after. I commented to the bartender, "You ready for it to get really busy?", thinking it would be filling up soon. She replied, "it's already busy". She was strange and bossy about some other things and we couldn't wait to leave. And when we did leave, it was still half empty. ** Shout out to the food runner- a brown dude that was so kind and told all the names of the salsas and explained them in such a great way. They need to promote that guy!

Yelp
We've visited Condor Bar a few times, this is our third. The food is outstanding. Every time we come in the staff has been welcoming, and inviting, recently I've noticed that there's been a change in environment. Now, the reason why I'm only leaving four stars instead of five. Last night, there was a blonde woman (i'm assuming she's a manager), who seemed very out of touch with the staff, to be blunt, we were uncomfortable and annoyed with the way she was speaking to our waitress. Love the restaurant, would hate to see it become "corporate" and lose the Ojai touch and hospitality.

Yelp
New favorite place! I'm a huge fan of Little Doms in Carpinteria, so I was excited to hear that the chef was involved here. First of all, this hotel restoration back to its original glory is perfection!! I can't say enough. It gave me Mary Jane Colter vibes, or New Cuyama Buckhorn vibes. I love the updated Americana. As for the food, we started with shrimp cocktail that was an elevated version of what you get at the border crossing. The veggies were fresh, the sauce pungent, and the shrimp succulent. Secondly, we had the melon and tomato salad with chicatana ants. I was bummed that the ants didn't impart any lemon flavor like the culinary ants I've cooked with in the past. You can leave them off if you're not into bugs, and you wouldn't notice the difference. The delicious melon and the farm-fresh tomatoes are the stars here. Lastly, we had crispy sea bass with esquites, and OMG! The sweet corn was so sweet. Everything was cooked to perfection. Creamy, delicious with a hint of crab. I can't wait to come back and try more. The margarita is solid, and we finished the night with an old fashioned in the lobby bar. That's a must-visit as well. 10 out of 10 we'll be back.

Yelp
Typical hotel restaurant with inflated prices for mediocre food. The guac was fine nothing special. I got the fish taco for $13 (only one taco and doesn't come with any sides) and was super disappointed. The fish was so small and crunchy...not the word to describe a fish taco. Also tasted fishy and I almost think it gave me food poisoning bc I had the runs all the next morning! My friend got the sweet potato taco and said it was their attempt to put something vegan on the menu but wasn't very good. She did say the beef cheeks were good. You can come for the ambiance and drinks but don't really recommend the food.

Yelp
This was our first visit to the Condor Bar restaurant. (We made our reservation on Resy.). The dining room and bar decor and ambience are great; lots of interesting details. The service is excellent as well. The hostess made us feel quite welcome and was able to seat us at a booth by the bar (we simply prefer a booth). Now on to the food and drinks, the house margarita was very good; made with fruit juices not a sour mix. The house made guacamole was delicious! It came with 3 tostadas, but when our server saw that we had finished those and still had some guacamole left, he brought us 2 more (that was really nice). I really like duck so I could not resist ordering the duck legs confit carnitas. They were cooked to perfection and served with some warm corn tortillas; delicious! Although it would have been nice if they were served with a side of black beans. My wife ordered the oyster mushrooms with the mole verde sauce. The oyster mushrooms were good, but the green sauce was not what either of us expected; not really a flavor profile that we enjoyed (live and learn). It would be great if they offered a few more house craft cocktails and a few more entrees such as upscale tacos and enchiladas made with lobster, shrimp, king crab, wild salmon, swordfish, etc. So, as Ojai locals, we will definitely be back! If the menu is the same, we will order the guacamole (and ask for 4 tostadas) and the tempura fried fish tacos. FYI, the duck legs confit meat would make great tacos! I commend the owners to bringing a new dining experience to Ojai!

Yelp
Great food, great service, and menu that is Hispanic inspired. The food has that Southern California feel with amazing cocktails and drinks that pair well together.

Yelp
The food we ordered was great; duck over a mexican sauce and a salad. The hotel is absolutely wonderful and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
