"Named after a traditional Malaysian game, Congkak is located in residential Jalan Beremi, not far from the city’s bustling central district. The restaurant is an expression of national pride and identity serving what visitors would deem as exotic, but are classics for locals. The most popular dish, the nasi ambeng platter, offers a multitude of textures and combinations of spicy, sweet and savoury flavours that go nicely with sambal. Different serving size is available to suit for your party size." - Michelin Inspector

A Solo Traveller's Guide to Kuala Lumpur

"Wearing its Malaysian identity on its sleeve—right down to a name taken from a traditional game—this spot serves bona fide local eats with kinship to Indonesian nosh, headlined by a magnificent Nasi Ambeng platter: a heaving sharing plate of meats, vegetables, rice, and fiery sambals prepared in numerous ways for a delightful mix of textures and flavours; it’s best with company, though a smaller solo plate is an option. Must-order: Nasi Ambeng (RM30 onwards, around US$6.50)." - Alvin Lim

3.75 stars Better to come without expectations. Venue: at a quiet street in a busy district. Not much parking lots outside. Relaxing alfresco dining area. Well air-conditioned indoors dining area. But a bit hot at the entrance. Colorful tropical / Indonesian decor and ornaments. Comfy seats. Decent setting with flake flowers. Some tables have tablecloth. Clean toilets. -- 7.7/10 Service: Opened door for us. We were first customers. Arranged a smaller table next to the entrance. There was a bit hot at the beginning. I don't like to be seated there. A female staff (?owner) was talking loudly inside. Felt ignored/ unwelcome in an empty Michelin's restaurant. We had to flag a waiter to come for placing orders. Normal waiting time for food. Paid at the front desk. No other customers until 7pm Saturday. --- 6.9/10 F&B: Indonesian cuisine. Good presentation. Good portion. Prices on high side. - Virgin Pina Colada, $20: Big portion, but the flavor of pineapple juice was too light. --- 6/10 - Adam Boy, $17: too many seeds. Why didn't filter the seeds. Flavor was ok--- 6.9/10 - Goreng Congkok, $25: There are fried rice, 3 skewers of Chicken Satay, Urap, Belindo, and Sambal Berlado. --- 7.5/10 - Telur, $25: eye-catching deep-fried egg & Tofu tower sitting on the rojak sauce with crushed peanuts. Slightly oily. Good to share for > 4 people. --- 8/10

We had a great experience at this restaurant! The beef stew was absolutely delicious, full of authentic flavors and perfectly spiced. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was cozy. Highly recommended for anyone who want to try local cuisine with authentic flavours!

Finding really good examples of Malaysian cuisine can be a challenge on the tourist trail. Places like Jalan Alor entice in the backpacker crowd, the families, couples and business travellers with its assault on the senses but they all overlook this great restaurant that is just a few steps away and serving, by far, the superior menu. We ordered the Nasi Ambeng, a selection of traditional dishes that each, on there own, are done to a high standard and after two weeks of mostly average food it was a true delight to get so many fine dishes in one smorgasbord of traditional Malay culture. Absolutely do not miss the drinks. The mocktails in particular are outstanding, but watch out as they are extremely moreish. An excellent restaurant well worth visiting next time you are in Bukit Bintang. We will go back.

It is my first visit to Congkak. Was feeling very hungry so I was looking forward to the Nasi Ambeng. When I arrived , I had a little difficulty opening the front door… of course by the time I got inside, everyone who noticed it said it happened to everyone. Even my friends who got there before me had the same experience. So the question is… why doesn’t the restaurant fix the door, or put up a signage? As for the food, we ordered the Nasi Ambeng for 2-3 pax and the Gulai Pucuk Paku, we didn’t have to wait long to be served , however they have forgotten our Gulai Pucuk Paku. When the Nasi Ambeng arrived, it wasn’t as hot/warm as I’ve expected. Although the food was generally tasty, i would have preferred a hot meal. Some of the dishes in the Nasi Ambeng wasn’t as nice as I’ve hope it to be. The one thing I really dislike is how cold the AC was. It was a bit of torture to sit through my meal freezing , and food of course got cold really fast too. Regulating the optimum temperature for the restaurant would be pleasant, especially it is the raining season. I came in a little wet from the rain, walked into a freezer and ate meals that is served towards cool temperatures. 🙁 a little disappointed by the Michelin guide …

Congkak has been listed in the Michelin Bib Goumand for 3 years running. It's located not far off from the main streets of Bukit Bintang, short walk from the train station of 5 to 10mins. General standards of the food is good, but lack the punch worthy of Bib Gourmand. Rusuk Panggang Masak Hitam (grilled Australian short ribs) was tasty, well marinated. Beef wasn't particularly tender but I would say it is still good to order. Tahu telur was disappointed having read great reviews. It was very oily and gelat. I certainly had better ones even many other places. Satay ayam, Grill eggplant, Sambal Okra were very good. Highlight for me in this meal was the sambal sauce that comes together as a side condiment for the dishes.. that was really great. Service wise was lacking. The waiter can't even figure out a simple drink order properly.

We tried a few items from the menu and the food was okay. However, the overall cleanliness of the restaurant was disappointing. When we arrived, there was an unpleasant smell in the shop, and the tablecloth was noticeably dirty. It seems like the place isn’t well maintained, which affected our dining experience.

Five stars. Dishes arrive confident and generous, each one knowing exactly what it’s doing. The tauhu telur is a quiet show-off—light, crisp… maybe even a little amused with itself. Very tasty! And Sandy brings the kind of presence you remember: friendly, sharp, and brilliant at recommending what to try, especially if you’re new to Malaysian flavours 👏 Excellent!

We had an incredible experience at this restaurant. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. All the food we ordered was incredible, but the Tauhu Telur and Itik Goreng Berempah were a very special experience for us.
