LA Synagogue Isn’t Happy About New Cannabis Restaurant | Eater LA

"An adjacent synagogue, Congregation Kol Ami has raised strong concerns about the cafe being sited so close to its building, noting members include families with children and people participating in a 12-Step addiction program; the synagogue also hosts Friday night rooftop dinners that would be essentially next to Lowell Cafe. Rabbi Eger emailed City Council members saying, “The business is to have outdoor space for smoking pot—and I don’t know why my congregation members and participants have to walk through clouds of marijuana to get to synagogue...It will limit the use of our outdoor space as well because of the contact high from the smoke that will waft in the area. We have no objections to people buying marijuana for their private use in their domains. We know that many people including our congregants use and enjoy cannabis. Some for health and some for recreation.”" - Mona Holmes

As someone who’s not Jewish, I really appreciated my visit here. I called in advance and the office was really helpful and informative on how I should come. I didn’t really get to learn much about their doctrine and I wish I could have met with the Rabbi, but for the hour and a half I was there the service was beautiful, and it was a great experience to observe. Hopefully next time I can stay the whole service and learn a little more, and get to know more of the community.

This is an amazing community of Reform and Conservative Jews. This is where my Jewish journey began officially. They offer stellar classes for both Jew and Gentile. I love the services here and I'm so grateful for all that the Synagogue does.

I think that you’d really love them because they’re genuine and very nice! They have a great class to learn more, a lovely Rabbi and amazing Cantor! The staff is helpful! They also have a ore-school that’s nice for little ones! I cannot say enough good things about them, just go and see for yourself!

I’m interested in converting and I’ve been to Shabbat services. They make you feel very welcome!!! Cantor Wendy is absolutely amazing her energy has such a spark to it. Her voice is beautiful. Her personality is very welcoming and sweet. Danny was so absolutely pleasant and warm so easy to talk to very welcoming. Rabbi Spector is very kind loved his service’s. Loved the bat mitzvah for Regan she is the most beautiful girl! She read out of Torah like no one’s business! So impressive it was a wonderful service. This will be the place I do my conversion...

Unfortunately the blessing Israel is called to be fell short for my visit. I wouldn't call my experience hostile but I would call it cold. I considered it an honor to be there. As a God-fearer, I sought to understand scripture and practice. I was able to quietly observe as I was, perceivably, intentionally ignored. I don't want this to tarnish this assembly only to make them aware of the reception Sojourners may be experiencing here. Please be the blessing you are called to be.

I was disappointed at the greeting I was given. The greeter drilled me, who are you and why are you here? I told him, "I came looking for answers." "You won't find any answers here." I considered to leave there and then, but I was hopeful. The greeter gave me a Torah, Seder Yarmulke, and Service Brochure. The service was encouraging, inspiring and edifying. I was thrilled by some of the weekday events they had in the brochure and tried to review them halfway through the service. That's when I realized the brochure was taken from the seat next to me when I wasnt looking. I tried to talk to a few people after service but they made it clear they didnt want to talk with me. The greeter returned asked sarcastically if I learned anything. I calmly replied I the service answered many questions and created many more. He made it clear he didn't want to talk. I left dejected. I was hoping to find a community but instead I was treated like an unclean goyim.

Great welcoming environment! I love the rabbi whom is very kind, knowledge and awesome! The community is so diverse from reform to Conservative to modern orthodox conservatives. I recommend Kol Ami a true blessing in Utah!
