LA Synagogue Isn’t Happy About New Cannabis Restaurant | Eater LA

"An adjacent synagogue, Congregation Kol Ami has raised strong concerns about the cafe being sited so close to its building, noting members include families with children and people participating in a 12-Step addiction program; the synagogue also hosts Friday night rooftop dinners that would be essentially next to Lowell Cafe. Rabbi Eger emailed City Council members saying, “The business is to have outdoor space for smoking pot—and I don’t know why my congregation members and participants have to walk through clouds of marijuana to get to synagogue...It will limit the use of our outdoor space as well because of the contact high from the smoke that will waft in the area. We have no objections to people buying marijuana for their private use in their domains. We know that many people including our congregants use and enjoy cannabis. Some for health and some for recreation.”" - Mona Holmes

While I appreciate having a non-Chabad synagogue in town and initially wanted to be supportive, I had a very uncomfortable experience during my first visit. As an autistic person, I quietly self-regulate to help me focus. During the service, an usher struck me on the back from behind — harder than a light touch — in an apparent attempt to stop a harmless stim (playing with a hair tie), despite me being attentive and non-disruptive. The physical contact was unexpected and forceful enough to startle me, and it made me feel ashamed and unsafe. It significantly impacted my experience as a first-time visitor. I hope the synagogue will consider accessibility, consent, and appropriate physical boundaries with congregants — especially first-time visitors and disabled individuals.

As someone who’s not Jewish, I really appreciated my visit here. I called in advance and the office was really helpful and informative on how I should come. I didn’t really get to learn much about their doctrine and I wish I could have met with the Rabbi, but for the hour and a half I was there the service was beautiful, and it was a great experience to observe. Hopefully next time I can stay the whole service and learn a little more, and get to know more of the community.

This is an amazing community of Reform and Conservative Jews. This is where my Jewish journey began officially. They offer stellar classes for both Jew and Gentile. I love the services here and I'm so grateful for all that the Synagogue does.

I think that you’d really love them because they’re genuine and very nice! They have a great class to learn more, a lovely Rabbi and amazing Cantor! The staff is helpful! They also have a ore-school that’s nice for little ones! I cannot say enough good things about them, just go and see for yourself!

I’m interested in converting and I’ve been to Shabbat services. They make you feel very welcome!!! Cantor Wendy is absolutely amazing her energy has such a spark to it. Her voice is beautiful. Her personality is very welcoming and sweet. Danny was so absolutely pleasant and warm so easy to talk to very welcoming. Rabbi Spector is very kind loved his service’s. Loved the bat mitzvah for Regan she is the most beautiful girl! She read out of Torah like no one’s business! So impressive it was a wonderful service. This will be the place I do my conversion...

Unfortunately the blessing Israel is called to be fell short for my visit. I wouldn't call my experience hostile but I would call it cold. I considered it an honor to be there. As a God-fearer, I sought to understand scripture and practice. I was able to quietly observe as I was, perceivably, intentionally ignored. I don't want this to tarnish this assembly only to make them aware of the reception Sojourners may be experiencing here. Please be the blessing you are called to be.

As a convert and a not very conventional individual I've avoided congregation for so long. After many attempts by my network to convince me to attend I made the decision and now my young family has come to feel incredibly welcome here. Rebbe nearly made me feel ridiculous for my hesitation. This place has become the most welcome place for us to worship without judgement and feel embraced as part of a community every day. Every individual member we've interacted with has been warmly receptive. Thank you all for this outlet.

Yelp
My first experience was very positive. Although the rabbi was not present the cantor's presence was excellent. The cantor even helped a congregant untangle her yarn skein after the service; a tiny, but warm addition of assistance. I'm looking forward to becoming a member of this congregation.

Yelp
The Good: -The shul is beautiful and well-maintained. -There is an active Reform/Conservative congregation and it never fails to make minyan (always full on Shabbat mornings). -The rabbi and cantors are great, thoughtful, skilled, and friendly. -Active event planning for both secular and religious activities. Things like Shabbatinis and Shir Shabbat, but also playdates for kids with the Rabbi and outdoor movie nights for kids. -They have a really nice outdoor garden where people volunteer to farm veggies and fruits. -Members usually get invites to study groups and guest speakers. The Bad: -The congregation is clique-ish and can make gerim and other newcomers feel unwelcome/ignored. -This is not too much of a bad thing, but it is a little difficult to reach using public transit.

Yelp
Such a wonderful welcome! I am new to the area and they have all been so nice! As a young jewish professional I am always looking to meet others that share a common interest and values and within the first two months of living in Salt Lake City I have already made new friends in the community. Thank you for welcoming us in! :)

Yelp
Since I've lost my wife, my kids and I were welcomed with open arms. Many of the people there were very supportive and helpful. They are very open to all those who wants to be a part of their family.

Yelp
Woot! First review! Ok, but seriously... Kol Ami is a great congregation. It is very open minded, with an active and thriving Jewish community. The rabbi is super awesome. Need I say more? The location is nice, because while it isn't in the heart of downtown, you get a lovely view of the Wasatch and the parking is ample. It's really pretty and spacious on the inside, despite its unassuming exterior. If you're new to Salt Lake, but understandably nervous about how you'll fit in, you've got nothing to worry about at this Synagogue!

Yelp
Great welcoming Synagogue! I like it because It is really interesting and inclusive. It is pluralistic.
