The Best Restaurants In Little Italy And University Village

"Conte Di Savoia is an Italian grocery store that’s been around since 1948, where you can stock up on all sorts of cheeses, salumi, and wine. That makes it the perfect place to raid for your next picnic or dinner party, but the real draws are sandwiches like a meatball sub or caprese panini. The cold subs are especially well-constructed and a good alternative to the ones from the Jersey Mike’s across the street." - veda kilaru, adrian kane

Conte Di Savoia - Review - University Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Conte Di Savoia is an Italian grocery store in University Village that’s been around since 1948, where you can stock up on all sorts of cheeses, salumi, and wine. That makes it the perfect place to raid for your next picnic or dinner party, but the real draws are sandwiches like a meatball sub or caprese panini. The cold subs are especially well-constructed and a good alternative to the ones from the Jersey Mike’s across the street. And while this shop looks its age with old-school checkerboard floors, a pressed tin ceiling, and a few retro tables, the better move is to take advantage of 21st-century advancements and order ahead to get your sandwich to go and avoid the long deli counter lines at lunch. photo credit: Veda Kilaru" - Veda Kilaru

If you love Italian subs, then Conte di Savoia is a must visit. Located on Taylor Street, Conte has earned its reputation for serving the most delicious sandwiches in town. For years, regular patrons have been coming back for the famous "Frank," a sub bursting with fresh meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Whether you opt for the 6-inch Frank or the larger 12-inch, every bite is toasted and perfectly spiced. But it's not just the delectable Italian subs that keep bringing people in - the atmosphere here is Italian all the way. From the warm and friendly staff to the inviting decor, you'll feel like you've stepped into a little piece of Italy.

Google
Long-standing Italian Deli. Great customer service, fresh meats and cheeses etc. They make sandwiches with love. I ordered an Italian sub and enjoyed it. Great place to grab a sandwich.

Nick Ventimiglia

Google
Delicious sandwich for only $10 🔥. I did a review for my YouTube channel "Mailman Nick" I got the Italian sub.

Jake DiMaggio

Google
Great deli with lots of quality pantry items to purchase in their store. You can order various sandwiches, Italian cookies - and pick up frozen handmade pasta & sauces, fresh cut meats & salads. Don’t forget to get some bakery bread.

Google
This place is one of my all- time favorites when I'm in the area. A friend introduced me to this place about 25 years ago, and I've been back many times. A small Italian grocery store and deli. Their sandwiches are awesome! I love "The Frank." And the cookies are great also.

Alejandro Barrios

Google
Best sandwiches in the city hands down! The guys are always cracking jokes and are super friendly. They always know my order. My family loves when I pick up sandwiches from here and so do my coworkers. If I can't get these sandwiches then I just don't eat a sandwich 😄 make sure you tip these guys they work hard!

Google
I see a lot of people commenting on The Frank, and for good reason. It’s the first ‘specialty’ sandwich I had here and is amazing. If you’re looking for something more simple, The Contessa is absolutely fantastic. Fresh Mozzarella cheese and Prosciutto Di Parma, with a little lettuce. Adding roasted red peppers is something I like. Photos will never do this sandwich justice! (photo also has extra meat). So far I haven’t had a sandwich here I didn’t thoroughly enjoy Easy 5/5

Google
The staff was really friendly and quick to help! Parking was tough out front, but it's chicago, so expected. The sandwich was alright. Meat and toppings were good. But it seemed like more bread than toppings. The only reason it hot a 4 star.

Andrea

Google
Old school Italian deli. Staff is super nice. Favorites sandwich is the Italian. Meatball sub is amazing too. Olives and deli salads are great. You can buy cold cuts and cheeses by the pound. Their Bulgarian feta and roasted red peppers are a staple for me.

Yelp
Love their sandwiches! One of the Best Italian subs I've ever eaten! Wish there was one close to me!

Yelp
Had a great panini capresce well seasoned and toasted. I would recommend it. My son had the hot Italian beef sub and it was really good.

Yelp
A lot of good Italian sandwiches in Chicago but this Taylor Street spot is my favorite. Great counter help that always builds a perfect sub. Bread, meats and toppings are always fresh. Great prices as well.
google avatar

Yelp
This was an excellent Italian sub , the bread wasn't hard and fresh deli meat and ingredients made a HUGE difference! The costumer service was ..."their specialty is in subs not costumer service " and they did a great job !
google avatar

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place. It's an authentic Italian deli with a market that has all your classic favorites including pasta, cookies and more. I ordered a turkey sandwich. They forgot all of the condiments I asked for including the giardiniera (extra cost) which was super disappointing. The bread was probably the best part of the sandwich. It was nice and soft. The pasta salad was entirely too oily for me. Also, the San Pellegrinos we bought were both flat. All and all, not a win today.

Yelp
Amazing old school Italian deli. Their sandwiches are incredible, but their frozen pastas and sauces are very underrated. This is a great local spot that is very hard to find nowadays. You feel like you're walking into a different era when you come through here. One of the best local spots that Chicago has to offer.

Yelp
If you're ever on the UIC campus (or are just looking for a really great lunch spot) look no further! I LOVE a well made deli sandwich for lunch, and there is no shortage of options at Conte Di Savoia. The sandwiches use fresh ingredients, and each one is a hefty portion size. I got the roast beef sandwich with thick slices of mozzarella, and twas delicious. They also have sides and desserts you can add-on to your meal. I tried the mini pistachio cannoli which was heavenly. Overall, definitely check this spot out for quality sandwiches for a reasonable price! Found my new lunch staple

Rohith E.

Yelp
Decent Italian sub place. I recommend getting the warmer sandwiches here, the cold ones aren't as greaf

Yelp
I passed this place hundreds and promised myself I'd stop in one day and today was the day. I ordered the Italian Sub on Turano bread and it was good with a good amount of cheese and meats. This is the kind of place your mom would take to in the old neighborhood. The sandwich makers are pros and get you out in no time. There are plenty of seats and tables the turn over is fast. Grab a bag of chips and a pop in the back behind the sandwich counter. Next time I'll stop in for coffee and a cannoli.
google avatar

Yelp
It's 2023 and the place offers a freshly made sandwich for $5 - can't beat that! It's a mom and pop Italian shop. You can get pre-made frozen local pastas, sauces, ready to heat meals, pantry goods, wine & beer, cheese, meats and of course the sandwiches! I wanted to get a meatball sub and the highly praised - "the Frank", a sandwich with fresh mozz, tomatoes, meats and balsamic vinegar. I honestly, I didn't look at the actually toppings, but this is just based on taste! The hot sandwiches are a bit more, but still a reasonable lunch or even dinner. They also offer catering and what caught my eye is the 6 foot sub!!! A part of me wants to order that for a party just for novelty. Place closes shop at 6pm, so be sure to check their online menu and get your order in.

Yelp
I lived across the street from this place 30 years ago and moved away after a few short years. But. Every time I am back in town this place is at the top of the list. Their sandwiches are truly the very best. Served up on Turano bread nothing beats a prosciutto and provolone with peppers and oil. I usually see the same friendly faces behind the counter that I did in the mid 90s and they are excellent and fast. It was this place where I first learned if you want to know where it's good to eat follow the boys and girls in blue. Rarely do I go there without several of Chicago's finest there as well. The place also carries a ton of Italian sundries and frozen entrees and sauces for whatever tickles your fancy.

Yelp
The Frank is the bomb. It is so good toasty, warm and delicious. I've had the Italian sub here a couple yrs ago so it's been a long time. I placed an order for pickup at 11:00 on Saturday. I wanted to beat the lunchtime rush. I didn't know what the weekend would be like. During the week is crazy busy. I parked in a 15 min spot and went to pick up our order. It smelled so good. I couldn't wait to get home. The Frank is a hot sandwich with toasted ham, salami, capocollo with fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, sun dried tomato and basil on a toasted French bread. It was so good. I only ate half of my 8". I could've finished it but decided not too. Next time it will be the 12". A lot more sandwiches to try. I'll be back. It will be the weekend lunch place.

Yelp
A wonderful Italian deli. Fresh Italian products, including Anisette toast that is full of flavor. The food takes me back to sitting around with my family. Of course the food is usually gone in minutes. Unfortunately there is not much left for the next day. I wish we lived closer (We live three hours away) because I oiled be there every day. People were very nice and helpful. Walking in the store is like a a piece of heaven. I would love to work there if it was not for the distance. Looking forward to going back. Thank You everyone at Conte Dr. Savoia!

Yelp
My top Chicago sub spot to date... can't wait to stop in for a full Italian sub. Great no frills old school spot to stop in for a quick very reasonably priced sandwich or some specialty items. It's a small yet well stocked Italian market with a deli counter for sandwiches. Their freezers had many takeaway items like lasagna, tortellini and other quick dinner options. The guys at the counter are very friendly, easy going and seemed like the type who would eventually know your order by heart if you were a regular. We stopped in for a quick pastrami turkey sub and it was everything I was craving. Coming from NY I'm spoiled for great (well priced) Italian sub options and I feel like the sub top-list in Chicago is kind of a let down. For the price, taste, meat quantity and overall quality this shop is leading my list so far. I only removed one star because it's up against some of my fav Queens NY spots and those are pretty epic.

Yelp
Hands down a must try if you are ever in the medical district. Conte Di Savoia maintains it's rustic roots while bringing you a totally delicious menu of options from their old school deli. Built on generations of Italian American immigrants, this area of Chicago has a long-standing Italian heritage. You truly can get a feel for it while diving into a classic Italian deli option while the Italian flags wave above you. Certainly the highlight of any delicatessen are there cured meats and sandwiches. In my opinion, there is no better bang for your buck when it comes to sandwiches then at this deli. For six dollars you can get a sub stacked high with salty cured delicious meats that would make Jersey Mike himself cry tears of joy. If meets are off the table for you, if you're not, as there is a wide variety of prepared salads and antipasti available per purchase by the pound. A particular favorite of my household is the bean salad. If you enjoyed the deli, and don't plan on returning anytime soon, you can take a little bit of it with you, as there is also a well stocked market for all of your Italian cooking needs. Italian cuisine is all about quality, rather than quantity, and the market pantry offers some of the highest quality , jarred, canned, and fresh foods for your future enjoyment.

Yelp
Sub sandwich was absolutely delicious as was the cannoli. The group of men making your sandwich worked quickly to make a delicious sandwich. This place is everything you want in an Italian deli on Taylor Street.
google avatar

Kilani G.

Yelp
One of the better Italian subs I've had in Chicago. The bread they used was really satisfying, and the sandwich was full. Fresh and well dispersed toppings, crunchy and spicy giardiniera You can buy pastas and sauces in the market, and the pesto is pretty good! Great local spot!
google avatar

Mi S.

Yelp
1-16-2023 Stopped in around 1:00pm. Ordered the Contessa and a ham sub. These would have delicious except the bread was so hard it tore up the inside of our mouths. Not even the microwave trick helped soften the bread. Quality is going down while pricing is going up. Disappointed.

Yelp
I'm a retired guy. I used to work at Stroger and would come here for lunch. The guys are quick making the sandwiches and very polite.. The girl cashier turned me on to their cards, every time you buy a sandwich they punch the card. 10 punches gets you $5.00 off. Every time I walk in first I see the crowd. How many tables are there. I have never had a problem getting a table even with all the cops there. I usually get an 8". Like I said I'm retired. This is very convenient. Eat and go about your business

Candy O.

Yelp
The Sandwiches were fantastic! We tried the soup and cannoli too. Everything was fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Flore C.

Yelp
I love the sandwiches here: great ingredients and combinations of flavors. The Frank is a particular favorite. Prices are extremely reasonable, making this a great spot for a quick lunch. The decor is nondescript and very functional, but given the price point and the fact that this is a supermarket, that's fine. I'm taking away one star for an interaction I had. I asked for a "burnt caramel" gelato when I came in this afternoon. I was given hazelnut by mistake, and I only realized this after eating a spoonful. To the grocer's credit, they gave me the correct flavor when I returned and complained. However, since I have nut allergies, I had an allergic reaction to the hazelnut. I couldn't enjoy my gelato, and now I also feel physically ill.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
You really can't get fresher ingredients for this price in one declines sandwich. I've been hunting for a good sandwich spot since moving to chicago and I'm thrilled this one is so close to me. Took me a year to get myself here but I'll be back sooner. The staff was very welcoming and attentive (granted I was the only customer at the time). The sandwich was prepared quickly and wrapped up for me to eat outside. First bite and I knew that the quality was legit--a far cry from the big name brands. There are also Italian goods available for sale you can browse and purchase as you wait. I highly recommend the Frank sandwich! Served warm with tons of flavor.

Jazz S.

Yelp
A true old school, hidden gem of an Italian spot in Little Italy. This place has spoiled me for years with their delicious sandwiches and ice creams at super reasonable prices. Please don't ever change. Coming here is an experience you'll never regret.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Best sub ive ever eaten. Also insanely fast service and cheap as hell too. End of stooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooory.

Kim K.

Yelp
Outstanding tasting Italian sub neatly stacked and wrapped. Outstanding atmosphere especially with the cleanliness from those making the sandwiches changing gloves with EVERY transaction and a guy mopping the floors periodically, Outstanding customer service, personalized and swift. This was my first time there, I'll definitely be back and will use them for catering.

Matt B.

Yelp
Holy crap this place is awesome! Solid sandwiches and the bread is so soft! We come here all the time and the service is fast and great!

Nat E.

Yelp
Best of the best. Always friendly, always fast, and always reliable. Will always recommend this neighborhood gem
google avatar

Juliet C.

Yelp
This is my first time trying an Italian Sub and it was amazing. The meats were not overly salty and had the perfect balance with the lettuce, cheese, red onion, and tomatoes. The frank was also good but I prefer the Italian sub. I also ordered a roast beef panini to save for later and after throwing it in the air fryer, it was delicious. These sandwiches are so simple but very very good. Prices are also great!
google avatar

Troy B.

Yelp
Friendly Italian deli with reasonably priced food. If you blink you ll miss this place on Taylor. It's definitely a gem. The Frank and the Italian Sub never disappoint.
google avatar

Virginia G.

Yelp
We often went here for grocery shopping every other weekend. They have a wide variety for ingredients that we looked for. I tried out their sandwich and it tasted delicious as always. Would recommend them to anyone who love italian food.
google avatar

Chen Y.

Yelp
I love a good Italian sub, and man no other places beat Conte Di Savoia. The quality and price is just unbeatable! A six inch fresh bread packed with fresh meats and veggies for only $5.50 including tax, whattttttt
google avatar

Angelina I.

Yelp
Sandwiches are always fresh and delicious! Frozen gnocchi, ravioli, and lasagna are great for a quick dinner.

Mark V.

Yelp
My Italian boss told me about this place but not after a lot of arm twisting. Best Italian subs in Chicago. Lots of people know about this gem so be prepared for a wait at lunch time during the workweek. Service is always efficient and pleasant. Ambiance is amazing - straight out of a movie set of an Italian deli set in the late 1900s.

Margaret E.

Yelp
I catered in a few sandwich trays and their house salad for a family party and everything was super delicious!!

Gaye R.

Yelp
The sandwiches are really good. Service is fast. Ambience is typical italian grocery with to go food.

Kristine H.

Yelp
Fresh cannoli made to order. Great cookie selection. Tried almost all of them and they were all delicious. My partner got a mortadella sandwich and didn't share. Said it was too good to share. So I'll have to go back and try myself.

Francesco L.

Yelp
We placed a large catering order for our office. We had more amazing food for a good price than anywhere else we have ever ordered from. Several sandwich trays. All delicious. Favorite is the Italian. Big Antipasto trays and some of the best butter cookies I've ever had. Definitely worth trying and we will be ordering again.

Teresa L.

Yelp
Divine ! This neighborhood spot is cheery and has FRESH sandwiches. When I feel like cooking , their fresh mozzarella is mandatory. When--more often--I take the easy way out, those frozen ravioli are outstanding. You won't be disappointed.

Deena F.

Yelp
Best italian sandwich I have had in Chicago. Great (casual Italian deli) atmosphere. GREAT food. Awesome bread, awesome italian meat. I love the guys (and girls) who work there. They all have the authentic feel. Awesome place. I have had the Rosie and the Italian - both truly perfect!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Cheap and yum. They are fast. My group was wandering around Taylor street and decided to come here for lunch. Everyone loved the sandwiches they chose and they make a mean panini. I myself got a itallin and enjoyed that. I wolfed that down real quick. There's also gelato (about 4 choices) if you're into that. I will have to try it next time. Apparently you can call ahead. There's a good mix of people at that place! The prices are what blew me away. Cheap cheap sandwich my goodness. I got a sandwich for 4.20 (6inch and not including tax). I will deff return. My name is Amy Lin and I approve of this message.
google avatar

Robert Z.

Yelp
Before I go home I went first here to buy some for for my wife and kids. I ordered Dinner Salad and Chicken Focaccia Grand Daddy. Dinner Salad is a combination of seasonal fresh greens topped with carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, croutons and your choice of dressing. Chicken Focaccia Grand Daddy is a roasted chicken breast with a pesto-mayo, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato and onion on tomato focaccia. Luckily it came really quick. So they have a great service and the staff seemed friendly and nice. My wife and kids are happy seeing that I bought a food for them. My wife and kids love the salad. My kids don't like the chicken they said that it's not juicy and it is hard. But when we taste it it seemed okay. It has a good seasoning. I just gave 4 stars rating to this store because my kids don't like their chicken.
google avatar

Lea W.

Yelp
Italian grocery store with a deli. Their made to order sandwiches are delicious and reasonably priced. $6 for a sandwich, pop & chips. They have tables to dine inside after you get counter service. They also have a selection of desserts including gelato (gelato is not made in house).
google avatar

Francis L.

Yelp
Got an Italian sub & they left off the onions. I experienced disappointment. Still prefer this to the potbelly shamwich stop across the street, but be careful! There are lil college-ies everywhere & forgetting the onions is just reckless, in my view.
google avatar

Anthony Z.

Yelp
Anytime I see CPD coming and going from a restaurant with bags full of food then I know that restaurant must have something good on its menu! Conte Di Sovia is no different! I've tried about half the menu so far and everything that I've order has been delicious! I highly recommend "The Frank" sandwich! It's my favorite so far!
google avatar

Shirley J.

Yelp
This place reminds me of North Buena Deli and Wine in terms of it being part grocery store and part dining except this is a bigger space and has more tables. We were on the way to Porto's Peri Peri but the specials menu on the outside window caught our eye. So we decided to stop in to get one sandwich to share and then eat at Porto's. This is more of a no-frills type place whereas North Buena might be in better shape. However, they have a bigger selection of items though. We ordered The Frank hot sandwich, which has toasted ham, salami, capocollo with fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, sun-dried tomato, fresh basil & balsamic vinegar. It's available in three different sizes: 6 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches. The sandwich tasted good and the combination of ingredients worked although I slightly prefer North Buena's Italian sandwich more. The service was decent, and we received our sandwich within a reasonable amount of time.
google avatar

Talia C.

Yelp
This place is great! Reasonable prices, fresh foods, a fabulous Italian deli. We got two 8" subs - The Frank and The Rosie. We also got a half pound of the macaroni and cheddar. Deeelish. You can choose from a huge variety of sandwiches in three different sizes - 6", 8", or 12". The prices are pretty great. They also have tons of fresh olives, different kinds of pasta salads, potato salads, etc. There's a freezer case with frozen sauces, handmade raviolis, tortellini, stuffed gnocchi, etc. There are also aisles with wine, olive oil, Italian bread, capers, sun-dried tomatoes, boxed pastas made in Italy, and more. Friendly fast service. Definitely an in and out kind of place. We'll be back for sure!

Mary W.

Yelp
Authentic and fresh. Highly recommend. Friendly service. Subs are packed with meat. Go here

Jazmin A.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, great prices, great service! Definitely pop by if you're in the area. The bread is a standout. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Victoria F.

Yelp
12 inch sandwich "the Frank" and the 12 inch Contessa, with extra peppers, are highly recommended! I had their hazelnut and pistachio gelato, and TOTALLY worth it. Not the mention the amaretti cookies (I love almonds). I didn't take a picture of the delicious food because I gobbled it all down. This place is a must for eating great food at an affordable price.
google avatar

Ayush V.

Yelp
This Italian grocery store has such a nice vibe to it, they're always quick to take your order and to bring it out. Their $1.50 cappuccinos are unbeatable and you can buy as many basil plants as you can fit into your hands in the summer??? Easy 5/5. Definitely worth the visit for the snacks, deli, and their wine & liquor selection isn't too bad either. This place truly transports you to Italy.
