We have been in Sevilla two months, and every time we walk past Contenedor, which is about four times a week, I say to myself "I need to eat there." Tonight was the night, and the place lived up to every hope and dream I had. First, a word about vibe - this place has it. It's comfortable, cozy, and chic all at once - the lighting (low), the music (tonight was a vocalist singing bossa nova tunes), and the service (unbelievably gracious and friendly) just enhance the vibe. To me, this felt like eating at a little slice of WIlliamsburg in Sevilla.
The deal with Contenedor is that the food is unbelievably fresh, and the menu - which is delivered to your table on a chalkboard- changes daily. The waitstaff will happily translate the menu for you, and offer ample descriptions of every single item listed (and everything on the wine list). It's clear that everyone who works there is passionate about the restaurant, and about food.
We started with what must have been the freshest salad I've ever tasted. The word "salad" somehow doesn't do justice to the incredible melange of deeply fresh veggies that Contenedor served up. Then there were shrimp - succulent, juicy, perfectly cooked (as in just enough to keep the shrimp a perfect pink and almost sweet) - served on a bed of amazing grilled veggies - asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms. Then there was the black rice with squid - thank you, Contenedor, for not serving some creamy risotto, but instead a deeply flavored rice with seared squid. And then the white fish served with oysters (yes, oysters). I can only describe the taste as "summer beach" - somehow both light and rich.
And please, do yourself a favor, and no matter how full you are, get dessert. The chocolate fondant is one of those amazing molten cakes - once you break into it, warm molten chocolate oozes out. And the chocolate tart is dense, heavenly, with deep hints of cinnamon and hazelnut.
Tip1 : Make a reservation!
Tip2: Unlike a lot of Sevillan joints, this place is open every night.
Tip3: The portions are rather large. We ordered four main courses for four people, and we might have been fine with three.
