Best Breweries in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"Chase Medlin, the former head brewer of Twain’s Brewpub and Billiards in Decatur, opened Contrast Artisan Ales in Chamblee in 2018. The brewery is located on Peachtree Road with an outdoor space out front. Some brews have hip-hop references, including the Boom Bap double dry-hopped IPA and the Hypnotize Biggie stout. There’s also the Smoothie Everyday fruited sour with milk sugar, and the brewery’s first lager, the toasted toffee Bayern Brune dunkel." - Eater Staff

Google
First time at Contrast Artisan Ales. Had three beers while here; a west coast IPA, a hazy IPA, and an imperial blonde. All three were very tasty. They’re not quite world class but definitely above average for their style. Staff were super attentive and made the experience even more enjoyable. I dig the vibe of the place as well. There's plenty of stool seating inside the bar along with multiple tables with stool seating inside the facility. Outside you can find picnic tables along with standing only spots. There’s two pointlessly gendered bathrooms as they’re both a toilet with a sink. Roughly 20-25 parking spots in the parking lot area; otherwise prepare to walk after finding a spot.

Awesome local brewery! The staff is friendly and super knowledgeable. Highly recommend the Thrilla In Manila sour, it's one of the best sours I've ever had. They usually have a food truck parked nearby and there are picnic tables. Outside is very pet-friendly.

Absolutely fantastic craft beers! My favorite micro brewery in Atlanta. If you've never had a sour that you've enjoyed, I challenge you to try their Jaguar Shark. Mellow, refreshing, and so good.

A nice, intimate place. Great beer and other libations. Always has a great suggestion, a good story and a kind word :-).... The whole staff is excellent and the beer is great.

Looking for a place to relax and share a beer or seltzer with friends, Contrast Artisan Ales offers an open indoor and exterior setting for your enjoyment. Offers activities, corn hole frisbee golf, with seating indoors, umbrella seating, tree covered seating. With in house brews and seltzers on tap, Contrast takes their small footprint to make a large impact in serving the customer. Great service with deep knowledge and excitement of their products the staff shows investment and value in service to the customer. Snacks/food are offered but are not their prime focus. Highly recommend for a great after dinner or before dinner local spot in Chamblee.

Google
Nice cozy space with cool art and chill tunes playing. I tried several different beers and none of them were stellar but none were bad. Service was very friendly. They had a taco truck that I didn't end up trying but it's nice to have food options. Overall a nice spot to hang out and have some beers.

My first time here as a vendor. It’s a nice space, staff was awesome and came out to talk to us. A great vibe. The Berry Citrus Sparkles seltzers is delicious. I look forward to hanging out here during the spring and summer months.

I love love love this place. The owners are so nice and the staff is wonderful. They have great drinks and cool vendor markets. Definitely a must go to in my book!

Yelp
I was looking for a place to meet between OTP and ITP and found this brewery in downtown Chamblee with private parking lot. It's got a nice outdoor space with plenty of picnic tables and would be nice for warmer weather. It was pretty quiet when we came on Sunday afternoon and they have a tv to put the game on. The bartender was so friendly and helpful. We were able to sample anything we wanted and there are lots of options from sours to dark beers to seltzers and even non-alcoholics. Hubs got the bock and I got the seltzer. I tried some sours and they are pretty good too. They also have 30oz cans you can take to go. The vibe was very chill and they are dog friendly! It definitely got busier as the day went on. I would love to see some food trucks or more food options (they had chips). We will come back again! The pups had a nice time.

Yelp
I love coming here with friends. They have good beer, picnic tables outside and some tall tables as well. You can play Frisbee golf or corn hole and just enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.

Yelp
A nice quiet tucked away brewery not far from Buford highway. Ordered the thrilla in Manila at 5:45pm on a Thursday while waiting for my husband to meet me for dinner. I was the only person in the brewery and got to enjoy a couple samples of their beers, chat with the bartender and listen to the good music (indie rock). They have a couple lagers, a DIPA and some spurs and seltzers (they call them sparkles) to choose from. There's some cool art murals to look at too. Worth a stop before or after Buford!
google avatar

Yelp
low key vibes with parking and an outdoor space! My husband and I went on a Monday night about an hour before close and noticed they had some corn hole stuff as well. We had their sour and an IPA and was pleasantly surprised, both were good! They also sell some merchandise, including disc golf gear which I thought was rly cool. Definitely would come back, support local!

Yelp
I went to Contrast on Saturday, 5/27/23. It was a beautiful and sunny day and we sat outside. Plenty of outside seating, which is super cute with picnic tables and string lights in the trees. I got the Thrilla in Manila Sour and it was AMAZING. Probably the best sour I've ever had. 100% recommend!

Yelp
The brewery density in the midtown area I can't even count. Though as you venture further out the brewery diaspora has not commenced and it's a rare site to find one. I like the location of the spot, and the vibes. It has a local feel with the workers feeling like just a neighbor filling up a beer for the local destress at the end of the day. I rate breweries more on ambiance than beer, so this place hits home for me. The beers are also solid as well, and for the nuanced discourse about the hops the neighbors can help. Overall any local joint where I can get a chill beer is high on my list, no problems with parking, no over priced beer, I think I've found my spot. Cheers.

Yelp
So that's the cool little spot. You have some indoor and a lot of outdoor area to sitting. They have a little park bench area, kind of on a hill so you may want to be careful. And it's in the middle of a forest but the point is there is room. They got a couple games there like cornhole but most importantly they have beer. They make their own, they brew in the back, they only have a certain amount but what they have is pretty decent. It's real low key and it's around the corner so if you don't know you're going, You would definitely not even notice it's there. They have a sign that says brewery pointing to the back of the building so that's the only indicator lol. If you go in there though, the people there will talk to you and give you the ups and downs of each type of beer they have, whatever they have on tap, and they're super informative. I've been a few times and I haven't been disappointed.

Yelp
I love this place! Their beer selection is great and so good! They have different food vendors there every time I go and everyone including the bartender is super nice. Very local and I love it.

Yelp
Great brewery with a fantastic rotating collection of beers that leave you with a greater appreciation of the classics. Service: Wonderful dude up front with a wide range of knowledge on the beers at hand and could give a recommendation in a heartbeat. Also, very loose with the pours when getting a taste for a beer or two. Incredibly nice when someone fell and gave the brewery a good vibe. Ambiance: Has some party games at hand to play with friends and outdoor seating for a different vibe from the cool, concrete vibe inside the brewery. Plenty of parking available and a decent amount of seating
google avatar

Yelp
Cute small place with a nice selection. I was offered a sample here to taste my drink first! I ordered the Lava Flow - Strawberry Piña Colada Sour. You can definitely taste the coconut flavor in this. It is a small place, but it was nice to catch up with a friend here. The staff is very friendly. There is ample parking here too, although I highly encourage ubering here if you are going to drink.

Yelp
I've been meaning to check out the closest brewery to me sooner, but it wasn't until Coffeeman Cold Brew had a pop up at Contrast that I finally made an effort to stop by. And god knows why I waited so long, because the beers are super unique, and honestly hard to find outside of the brewery. During COVID, they were serving beers in ugly plastic SOLO cups, which was understandable, but forgive me for the ugly photos... my friend ended up buying a glass JUST so we could take some better pics (he bought a glass and a beer in a plastic SOLO cup, which he poured into the glass himself...). The things foodies do for good food pics... I'm not a sour beer drinker but really enjoyed the Paradise Melange V3. The DDH Fresh Eyes IPA was also a pretty easy drinking and juicy IPA to sip on while people watching. Can't wait to stop back in to try some more complex and exclusive beers... and hopefully in their gorgeous glassware next time and inside... hidden from the scorching heat of the sun!

Yelp
Great brewery in downtown Chamblee. There aren't many breweries in this area but this one has it all. Great selection of beers, foodtrucks and good music. Its a real good spot to sit and vibe with friends. At first glance, there doesn't appear to be a lot of parking but there are plenty of parking spaces in neighboring businesses and they aren't strict about parking. I highly recommend, even if you aren't a big beer drinker.

Yelp
Came here this afternoon after passing by it the other day on a walk. It's tucked into the back of a small shopping area with plentiful parking. Upon walking up, there's around 6-8 tables our front with big umbrellas and stools. The bar to order was very nice and had a good aesthetic. There's isn't a large selection compared to larger breweries, but had a solid choice with some variety. I ordered the Paradise Melange 4.0 and enjoyed it. I wouldn't say I'm the biggest beer connoisseur, but I love a good sour and this once was around 6/10 for me. Due to Covid, all pours were served in plastic cups so it's not the prettiest but it'll do. Starting a tab here is quite bizarre and unlike any other breweries or bars I have been to. When starting a 'tab' here, they KEEP your credit card until you close your tab and then charge you. This is unlike other places where you swipe and 'pay' and are still able to log drinks until it's fully closed out at the end. I can see this easily having issues and I would not start a tab here next time just due to this. They could really go for some more seating as around 4PM today this place had all tables filled with people just standing in the parking lot. There's a 1 disc golf stand and 3 lawn chairs, but otherwise it's kinda barren. I think this place could do with some more outdoors additions, but I'll be coming back next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoy this place. It has a very small indoor seating but also the parking lot serves as a hang out area, almost like you are tailgating. There's usually a food truck situation as well. The beers themselves have been up and down - either really good or really forgettable - but that's a lot of breweries these days. I like the fact that it's kind of hidden behind some other businesses. Only downside is that it's been almost too busy the couple of times I've been - but that's not a bad thing for the business.

Yelp
Amazing hole in the wall brewery that a friend recommended and I'm so happy I know about it now! I came 15 minutes before closing as a last minute decision with a group of friends and the guy behind the counter (owner?) was super friendly, and knowledgeable about all of the beer selections, and gave us samples of anything we wanted. The beer here runs on the higher ABV side (the lowest I saw was 5.6) but everything I tried was smooth and delicious. I love that they had really unique sours that weren't too sour, as well as dark beers and IPAs I picked up Thick as Thieves (strawberry cheesecake) and Bossy Red (Belgian strong) to go bottles. The dark beers were all very good, and is say run on the sweeter side with strong notes of chocolate or caramel. My friend had a favorite porter he remembered from awhile back that wasn't on the board, and owner said it was secretly on tap and poured a cup for him. Also we got a free glass of one of the other stouts they had, which had more coffee notes in it. Definitely a 5/5 experience and I'd love to come back during the day to sit down with friends and try more beers!

Yelp
A hole in the wall style brewery. Obviously they spent their money on making good beers. This is my 3rd time here and finally adjusting to the mom and pop vibe. Good beers with wide selection. Also sparkles (seltzers and sours). Give it a try!

Yelp
My friend lives in Chamblee and this is her neighborhood watering hole, so I met her for a few brews on a Sunday night. Located in downtown Chamblee with plenty of parking. There are a few tables with heaters out in the front, and the first thing you see is the bar as you enter. While maybe not as much selection as other breweries, the 2 beers I had were very enjoyable and fruit-forward (Grab Bag Double IPA and When Life Gives You Peaches Sour). I noticed most of their beers are higher ABV, 6% and above. They also do pitchers and half pours which is pretty nifty! They did not have a food truck when I was there, but they do have some grab and go snacks available, like bags of chips and adult lunchables. The atmosphere is very chill, like you are drinking at your friends house that also happens to be a brewery. They have some board games and corn hole and disc golf. There is bar seating and some high top tables inside as well, but overall not a ton of seating. I could see it getting packed if maybe 5 or 6 big groups show up. This is why I always keep a portable chair in my trunk! Overall, Contrast is a very welcome addition to the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Been coming to N Atlanta for years and glad I found this spot and came. Not only was it the only brewery open on this Monday but the atmosphere was awesome. GREAT beer, friendly crowd and staff, cornhole tournament if that's your thing. Will always return!!

Yelp
On top of being a food lover, I've began to appreciate beer after our trip to Munich and Prague. Welp, just my luck. Added a new item to my gluttony. Contrast Artisan is small brewery but with bold flavors of beer to satisfy all of your cravings. My goto beer is a dark beer and I must say, the Bourbon barrel aged biggie stout is a doozie. It has rich bourbon flavor and just enough sweetness! Means a lot, coming from someone that doesn't even like bourbon. Today I was craving something light and I was in paradise with Paradise melange sour. Despite its name, not much of sourness, which i liked. Overall, it was refreshing, light, and felt tropical as if I was drinking mango juice that I think I unconsciously head tilted all the way back to get to the last drop. Point is, Contrast brewery has an option for you to satisfy your mood of beer. I've recently started my visit here, but I do see that they change out their beer options time to time. Contrast is a quaint brewery(maybe fit around 30 inside and out) that has friendly staff, simple choice of options(not much of food menu but liking the simplicity), and is dog friendly(extra kudos for this). Oh and they let you try a sample, so you can check out the good before actually ordering a drink. Very chill place to come and enjoy a nice wine glass of beer and a great add to Chamblee!
google avatar

Jessy C.

Yelp
Doesn't list on their site what has lactose and doesn't respond to your email asking about it. Why would anyone bother to visit?
google avatar

Will F.

Yelp
I went here with two of my friends as well as my husband. Not only did they offer a nice selection of ales to taste and enjoy, but they also allowed us to sample them before deciding on which one to get. When we arrived, we noticed the rather dull but efficient decor and presentation. Nevertheless, the presenter was very helpful talking about the choices and how they differ from both the other choices on the menu as well as other choices they had in past, even though two of us had not ever been there. Most of all, even though my husband has NEVER been a connoisseur of beers of any kind, he found one he liked and enjoyed. BRAVO!!
google avatar

Lauren O.

Yelp
It was a cute, small place. Beer was good. Only four options. Hoping for much more in the future as they are able to grow! The building is hidden behind the antique store. There is a large parking lot available there too. Food wise they sell a meat and cheese option and some potato chips.
google avatar

Lindsay W.

Yelp
What a fun little hidden gem! Honestly, I don't know if I would find this brewery since it really is off the beaten path. The venue is super cute with an indoor/outdoor setup. The staff is super helpful with helping you decide which beer you want. They offered I believe 6 kinds and let you take them in a small wine style glass. Most of the beers (IPA, PA, and Stout) were served in these larger wine style glasses which made it interesting for drinking. The lightest of the beers was served in a Pilsner style glass. They also had some snacks you could purchase. I Loved that they had a food truck there serving amazing food too. In the covered part there was about 20 seats and some tables. Outside had some high boys. This brewery is definitely not meant for kids since there are no kid things to keep the kiddos occupied. Totally ok with that! They sold some shirts and such. A little pricey for me, but that is just me. Overall, it was a great experience and will definitely be back.
google avatar

LC C.

Yelp
Happy to actually have a brewery in Chamblee! Small, chill spot, vibe of Colorado. I am no beer expert, but my boyfriend likes the Luminiferious and the DIPA, they had a sour that I liked 'Time to Ride'. Better than a lot of beers in town and on the beltline (cough New Realm). The bartender let us know they have food trucks sometimes, there wasn't one when I visited but would have eaten there if so! Suggestions for the owners: Add hooks on bar for handbags Hire more beer pourers Provide a few board games/card games for guests to play at the tables
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Enjoyed their beers and they have a bunch of tables and/or chairs spaced out around the quiet parking lot which makes everything a lot more comfortable in a covid world. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Derry D.

Yelp
The most flavorful beers anywhere. Very friendly staff. Great place to spend time with friends and enjoy a tasty beverage
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
I love this place. While the offerings are limited for now, I have tasted each beer and they are all delicious. I see big things for Contrast in the future. I live very close and all of the neighbors are excited to have them. Chase, the brewmaster/owner and the staff are all very nice and welcoming. The fact they don't have much food is not an issue for me. I'm there for the beer!
google avatar

DeShawn W.

Yelp
Stopped by last night while waiting on Gus's to prepare food. The beer was really great, the service was good, & it had a really cool vibe. I will definitely frequent this place on a consistent basis. It has a real community feel to it I can tell everyone there goes often & everyone as super friendly.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
We discovered this hidden gem walking around one night in downtown Chamblee. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to beer but the bartender was very accommodating and exceptionally kind. My fiancé and I tried all of the beers available and learned something new about each one. We really enjoyed our experience and are happy this is so close to our home! They also had a really cool painting on the wall! I would recommend dropping in if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Katie V.

Yelp
I just bought a home in Chamblee and was thrilled when I found out a brewery had just opened less than ten minutes away from the new homestead. My boyfriend and I popped in here on a Thursday evening after grabbing dinner nearby. There were still quite a few people lingering around by 8:30 which was a great sign. I imagine it's even more popping on a weekend. The space is a bit cozy but open and trendy. Plenty of seating around the bar, inside at tables, and outside as well. The bartenders were friendly and informative. The beers are great - my boyfriend loves the porter options while I stick to my hoppy IPAs. He got one infused with the cold brew and really enjoyed it. The outdoor area appeared to be dog friendly too, so we'll bring the furkid next time. I'm glad these guys are here and part of Chamblee's glow up!
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
We love our local brewery located in our hood! Top notch beers, especially the Coffee Biggie Stout. We go here every week. Cheers!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
First little brewery to open up in Chamblee. So great to see a place like this in the neighborhood. It is not a brewpub restaurant, it's a brewery only with excellent beer and a few snacks. Cool little chill spot, good music, friendly bartenders.
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
Super nice staff, clean, cool facility with awesome artwork and the beers were soo good. We tried the Luminiferous IPA, Bossy Blonde, Hypnotize Stout and Hypnotize Coffee Stout - recommend them all. Plus they're dog friendly (even inside). We will most definitely be back!
google avatar

Brent H.

Yelp
Fantastic beer and really cool spot. Art on the wall is cool. They have a good variety of beer. In particular, love the Luminiferous IPA!

Yelp
Nice little brewery tucked in downtown Chamblee. Hidden gem; local and fresh. Hip spot as well with local artists and their works posted on its garage-band interior decor. Hospitable and knowledgeable service from the brewmasters making you feel as if you're just chillaxing at someone's garage as these nice batches of blonde, double ipa, and stout are brewing. Cool merchandise such as glassware, clothing, hats, and even coffee is sold here as well. Chips and "fancy lunchables" can accompany you on your beer flight. Highly recommend!!!!

Lorelle G.

Yelp
We went to contrast artisan ale. Beers ranged from $7.5-8.5 per 12 oz. they offered half pours. When we asked the price they said it would be half price plus a little more, maybe $0.5. When we got our bill the half pours were $5. This place is a total rip off. Long lines for beer as well. Many more great breweries in the ATL. Avoid.

Brad H.

Yelp
Great brews. Nice, open area to order, which made me feel good about going out for a beer (still masked up).

Wes M.

Yelp
I struggled between 3 and 4 stars, but ultimately have to go 4 stars to give the first Chamblee brewery props and support. Went for the first time for their one year anniversary with the kids (4 yr and 1 yr olds) in tow. The good: the beers were tasty. I had the bourbon barrel aged coffee stout, which was excellent, and my wife had a lemonade inspired sour which she liked a lot. I'm a sucker for barrel aged beer, and this one was on point. I had intentions of buying a bottle to take home, but $30 for a bottle was a bit rich for me. Glad to have the tasting though. Word to the wise, this is not a kid friendly brewery. At least not on the day we visited. There are no activities outside and the narrow inside space was completely packed with adults. You couldn't get a stroller into the door. We were wondering about this and the visit answered our questions. So likely we won't be returning much. But I respect their right to create whatever vibe they want for the brewery.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Honestly, I will probably come back one more time in the effort to give this place 5 stars. I was only able to come for a short while with some friends - I love how you're able to hang out in a spot like this without having to drive all the way down into the city. The beer selection is fairly small but I had tried the Artifice while the boyfriend tried the Fingertrap IPA. You have the option of either a 5oz ($4) pour or 10oz ($7) which isn't too shabby. Dog friendly which makes it even better. I do wish it was a tad bit bigger with a larger entry way, but I appreciate the charm and style of it overall. Stay tuned for update....

Yelp
Went in skeptical and walked out addicted! I am in Love and hoping other craft beer lovers will check this amazing little place out. Their focus is small and with FULL on love for their art. I originally thought Chamblee only had Hopstix (of which I'm not a fan of the restaurant/brewery concept). Contrast is really amazing...bring a few friends and check it out.

Melissa G.

Yelp
I left a previous review that was 1 star, not ever have leaving a review for any business before. Not sure that it ever took, because I didn't have a yelp account. I was very dissatisfied with the service and atmosphere then because it was fairly close to the beginning of the pandemic. We were all trying to figure out our new environment. The bartender who gave me the cold shoulder and source of my 1 star was just as disappointed in what was going on and because I thought my opinion mattered more as a customer, I was unfair to the judgement of his feelings and what he was going through. I've been here several times since and can tell you this is a very inviting wonderful atmosphere with great tasting craft small batch beers. So very happy to come here to enjoy great service, tasty beers, and a warm atmosphere. We have survived and we are better because of our hardships. Carry on in love, be merry, and rejoice in the small things that make you feel grateful to be alive!

Yelp
Went for the first time today. Really good drafts ! Super nice and friendly staff. Small patio outside so should be even better as Spring hits Close (walking distance) to several restaurants as well in Chamblee. You'd think it was a hidden gem at first since it's pretty knew and kind of tucked away - but it was pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon. We will absolutely be back! Brookhaven/Chamblee has needed a place like this!

Christian C.

Yelp
Great in house brews, open air laid back atmosphere in the heart of Chamblee. You gotta try it.

Andrew L.

Yelp
The definition of a hidden gem. They are located behind a row of stores. When you walk in you will be met with friendly servers and amazing brews. The owner/head brewer is there telling you about the different brews. Highly recommend.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Love this place! Very clean and cool atmosphere. Very different from all the rest. They have yummy chips to snack on too!

Brooke G.

Yelp
Contract really stands out and isn't just another new Atlanta brewery. The owner is incredibly friendly, and the staff was great as well. Overall awesome experience. Highly recommend.
