Convention Grill

Really really good malts, you can mix and match flavors and make really good combinations. The rest of the menu is pretty simple, it isn’t bad just only burgers really and it takes a while to come out. Malts do the heavy lifting at this place.

This is an original burger and shake shop. I love that they give you the can for your malt as well as home cut fries! Remember the stir the can before you add the last little bit or they’ll be a mess…. ha ha ha

This has been on my “to eat at” spots to do list for awhile now. The place is cute and nostalgic yet leaves a lot to be desired with the food. My grilled cheese was rubbery and not very good at all. The burger was a normal diner burger with little taste. I thought the fries were good yet all of them were tiny in the big costly basket. Our server was kind and the manager seemed on top of things. Over all it wasn’t horrible but I can’t say that I would make it a stop again when I’m in the area.

First time here. Make sure you know or take a picture of your license plate number. They need it to confirm your parking if you park in the parking lot. Came at 2pm. Wasn't busy, only 2 other tables were occupied. Service was a little slow considering wasn't busy. But staff was eating their lunch it seemed at this time. Staff dressed in white nurse outfits. Food was definitely worth the wait though. Got large oreo malt. Which filled up the cup twice. Careful when you pour, it can come out really fast. Mushroom and Swiss was decent. Meat was a little dry, and didnt have much flavor, but a little salt and mayo helped. Fries were definitely amazing. I normally don't like fries but these were pretty well cooked. Recommend trying this place out. 😊

Meh. Decent food, not really seasoned though. Bun was good, burger was alright. Chili was way too expensive. Same with fries. Fries were darker skin-on, cooked too much fries. Everything was ala cart, so not so inexpensive. There are a lot of other places to spend that amount on a burger and fires and get something better. The atmosphere was kind of fun, but mainly an older crowd. The parking lot is a jacked up situation and no one really knows what's going on.

Stopped in to have a delicious burger, fries and full blueberry shake. A bit spendy but worth it. Great atmosphere. Make sure you let them know if you park in the lot so they can enter your license plate number into their ipad at the counter. So no need to pay to park. Love this place - love the area - everything was perfect. Highly recommend. 😋

We’ve been meaning to stop in here for a long time and I’m glad we finally did! It has a great, throwback vibe, going back to its early roots. I love that they keep the menu simple and true to the type of place that it’s always been. The servers were friendly and fast, the food was solid and the root beer float was fantastic. We took to long to get here, but we’ll be back again soon!

My daughter and I had a wonderful lunch today at the Convention Grill in Edina. The staff is courteous, the restaurant is nice and clean. And I love the old Diner style food. Jalapeno bacon cheeseburger was wonderful. Along with a root beer float and butterscotch malt. Will definitely be returning as soon as possible and recommending this place to anybody 😁

My BF & I visited last week, we were on our way to visit the MIA. But as we had warned ourselves we might be sleepy after lunch. Hopefully we can stop visiting Convention Grill prior to MIA. Or we may never see MIA again. :-(

I hadn't been to the Convention Grill for 10 years and was happy to see that it hadn't lost any of its charm. Large menu of diner favorites and plenty of malts. Staff was friendly, but a little aloof. Prices also seemed a bit steep. Lots of parking located in the lot behind the building.

This was just how I remember it!!! Convention grill use to be my favorite place to go when I was a kid so I had to try it out again when it reopened! It feels exactly the same just looks a little cleaned up, maybe new paint? Looks great!!! We all got burgers and shared a regular fry. Hot tip, the regular fries were way too many for 4 people, could have sized down. As I'm gluten free I was excited they had gluten free buns and made my shake without malted milk!! Seriously I was so excited I could have all my faves still. The food prices are amazing but the quality is even better. You can't beat fresh cut fries! I made a custom shake, had to have their famous hot fudge and banana! Wow was it very banana forward but amazing! Make sure you make room for any of their ice cream treats. Also I got a half order of a malt and it was 2 full glasses, such a great deal!

We popped over to Convention Grill for lunch while working at a coffee shop nearby. My friends had heard that they had a really good burger, so we decided to check them out. The place is really cute, with an old diner feel (including the servers wearing classic uniforms). I ordered the Grilled Cheese Club, which was a triple decker, 3 cheese grilled cheese. It was honestly a lot; I don't know if I would get it again, but it scratched an itch for sure. We also shared a full order of fries, which was massive! They were super crispy & delicious. My friends did confirm that the burgers were very good, so I think that's the ticket. I'd love to go back & try their shakes as well!

Absolutely great classic American Diner. Don't skip out on the legendary fries. Burgers are also fantastic! With about half an inch (or probably more) thickness, perfectly seasoned and just filling. Delicious chocolate malt shakes, too!

It's a rare thing when a restaurant you love returns from the dead, but that's what happened at Convention Grill. Although it opened in 1934, it closed a few years ago, seemingly forever. However, they are now open at the same location and with what looks to be, the same menu (but with higher prices). Food: Between us, my wife and I had a cheeseburger ($12.90), a hamburger ($11.95) a half order of fries ($7.95), and a chocolate-coffee shake ($9.95). The hamburgers, although not overly large, have a great steak-like taste. The ratio of fat to lean was perfect, as was whatever cuts of beef they use. This is a top-notch burger! There are extra charges for cheese, tomato and lettuce, or any other ingredient. The hamburgers come with sliced pickles and a good-tasting bun. The portion of fries is enormous. We split the half-order and still had half of the huge basket left over. I recommend getting the "side order" fries for $5.95 (enough for two people). I'm sure the "regular size" would feed a little league team. The fries are skinny, skin-on fries that I suspect are fried twice. They have a great potato taste, are served fresh and hot, and are equal to the hamburgers in terms of quality. The shake was tasty, but a bit melty or overly liquid in my opinion. I don't think they are as good as the ones I have at Fifty's Grill, but they are still worth getting. The "large" fills two glasses, so it can be split. Honestly, I struggled with the rating, as to whether to give it four or five stars. For food, service, and ambiance, it deserves five stars. However, I do struggle with the price. For one hamburger, one cheeseburger, French Fries, and a shared milk shake, should this meal be $51.75, including tip and tax? That's a lot of money for lunch, considering what we ordered. I would love to know their prices before the pandemic and see what is the percent increase. Ultimately, I picked five stars because: 1. The quality of the food (and service) is excellent. 2. I would like to see this long-time fan-favorite restaurant do well. 3. The did not include any required junk-fees on the check. I do think it will be interesting as to how "price-elastic" customers are willing to be for eating basics such as hamburgers at a lunch place diner.

So, I saw reviews that this place had gone downhill since it reopened. But my parents were in town and they specifically requested Convention Grill. So we went. It was great! Same as it ever was. I still love it. I had a patty melt (which I think had more sauteed onions than they used to put on- huzzah- and my parents each had a cheeseburger, which they really liked. We got an order of fries to share-- they were just like they used to be. And the malts are still wonderful. Service was great. We went at 1 PM on as Saturday and the place was pretty packed, just like it used to be. Go and enjoy, is my advice.

Good old fashioned diner with limited menu of classics. Fabulous fries - big portions too! Love all the flavors of malts and that you get the can for a refill, even when you order a half size malt. Great place for families.

So glad they opened again, I used to come here years ago with family. They still live up to the hype. The burgers are great, fries are even better, and the malts are legendary. You have to get the Reeces add banana. They're just opening up again so expect a slight wait, plus the phone didn't work, but it was 100% worth the wait! They even kept the same look at before with the diner style seating up front. Welcome back Convention Grill!

We were so excited for the grand re-opening of Convention Grill - it's a neighborhood anchor, and the vibes are so cool! Three stars for a few things. 1. The good: our server, Hazel, was amazing. The fries are out of this world! And though it's been renovated, they kept much of the original decor (including all the mirrors!), and they still grill the food right at the counter. Very cool. 2. The bad: it is LOUD. SO loud. My dad whipped out his decibel app and it read 88 dB - like a rock concert, or standing next to a motorcycle, or a blender. Nearly impossible to have a conversation (and the place wasn't even full!). Our toddler was so overstimulated my husband took her home halfway through the meal. The menu is limited -- if you're not looking for burgers, soup, or salad, your only option is a grilled chicken sandwich. The ice cream in our sundae had freezer burn - not ideal. The prices are a bit high for diner food - our family of 6 ate dinner & 3 of us had desert for $155 including tip. Overall, I'm not sure we'll be back. Snuffy's is just up the road and it's a much more pleasant experience with less tables/more insulation for sound/a more expansive menu!

We were looking forward to lunch at Convention Grill as it reopened after the pandemic. The malt as usual was great, as for the burger, it was dry, over cooked, and the bun was dry and hard. I regret not saying something at the time. The Service was fine as was the Ambiance. This was about 1 PM and they were not busy, hope that isn't why.

Convention Grill has been a favorite for 3 generations. We are never disappointed with the service, fries or famous sundae and malts

Nice to see the Grill open again as so many of us hope they prosper! We were greeted nicely by the hostess who seated us promptly. Just as efficiently our server...all 6'4" of him, welcomed us, took our drink orders and returned quickly. I ordered the Meatloaf sandwich (see photo) and a Chocolate Malt. Both arrived quickly. While the sandwich was O.K. (served on wheat bread), I'm hopeful next time an "open sandwich with gravy" will be an option. You'll find the staff to be eager and friendly and the restaurant to be very clean. I'd be disappointed if the experience wasn't even better next time as the staff is interested in making every diner happy. Give it a try!

I was so excited to take my family for lunch to celebrate my Mom's birthday. My son has airborne anaphylactic allergies to shellfish and fish, Anaphylactic to nuts,tree nuts and allergic to cows milk protein. Needless to say we rarely go out. I spoke to manager and confirmed no shellfish or fish. He just wanted hamburger and fries we bring our own bun. She said if we are busy it would be hard . I stated it would be too hard for you to clean the grill and use clean utensils. Well she said we can't shut the grill down and we only have one turner for burgers. Sad that they didn't want to serve my family but more bizarre only one turner for burger at burger restaurant.

Nostalgic visit marred by intense construction noise during lunch and aggressive rude floor manager insisting either it WAS finished (it was not) or that it HAD to be done NOW. Incessant very loud pounding. Dry tasteless hamburger, overcooked fries. The milk shake was okay, although the hot fudge shake was more like a weak chocolate shake, not the hot fudge shake of days gone by. Easy to understand why the place was empty.

Should be a 0 star review. Horrible! Terrible! Nothing good to say here. The food itself was disgusting. Absolutely nasty. We asked for a kids burger for my little cousin and it was raw. RAW. Yes raw. Warning to anyone to cut your burgers in half because clearly chefs won't be checking for you. THIS WAS FOR A CHILD. My cousin didn't know and ate some of it and kept saying how nasty it was, when I looked over I wanted to puke. We ordered it cooked fully. Had to say that this place is overhyped. It's nothing better than a basic restaurant with some "history" when presented my food the cheese want melted, the burger was also raw, and despite all that the shakes, fries, and other food just was not worth it. Don't waste your money because you will be disappointed and possibly at a health risk.

So glad Convention Grill is back. Service, burger , fries outstanding . Like I remembered . Welcome back.

food is just like home from the fries to the burger. the salads could use more dressing. ambiance is perfect diner atmosphere. smells of fried foods. the chili is awesome!! they are using the recipe from " Runyons ". now they need Runyons wings ! condiments: lacking here. basic Heinz ketchup and yellow mustard. no spicy brown mustard and no siracha. i suggest bringing your own. i missed this place during the covid shutdown and now very glad it reopened!

I remember coming to the Convention Grill in high school (50 years ago). The ambiance still has the vibe of the original restaurant, with a spotless contemporary cleanliness; no greasy spoon here. The dinner crowd bustled with big young families of happy, wriggling loud kids, and smaller tables of mixed generations. Staff was courteous and used modern gadgets like handheld ordering tablets that also complete credit card payments at the table. Now, about the food, I regret that it did not live up to my memories. I ordered a cheeseburger (meh), a generous order of fries which were pretty good and a full size chocolate malted milk that tasted neither malty nor very chocolatey. My friend thought it was soft-serve; I doubt that, but it didn't seem to be hand scooped either... and for $9.95 I expected morsels of malt at the bottom of the tin. For years to come, this upscale neighborhood will likely continue to make memories at The Convention Grill, while SW high students, like I once was, might opt for less costly after school nosh.

Convention Grill is back! It's as wonderful as ever. You are going there to order burgers, fries and malts. It's been a neighborhood institution forever! I'm 66 years old and my parents used to go on double dates here (mainly because my mom's best friend's uncle owned it). The current owners also own Runyon's, so I might try the chili...or not. Plazaburger is my favorite. Fries are amazing and any malt you order will knock your socks off. Welcome back!

LOVE this place and glad they are back open again. Perfect spot for good, no-frills burger and Fries. Their Malts are REALLY good and highly recommend getting one!

Enter and behold a throwback to the '50's. This is a damn good Americana style burger, fries and malt place that has been an institution since 1934. In fact, I'm guessing not much inside has changed from since inception including the counter grill and the asbestos style floor tiles so popular in days gone by. I've been coming here for 25 years and fully expect to see Norman Rockwell painting something at the counter every time I walk in! There are several things on he menu that are not burger and fries relations such as chili, salads and the like but you can't possibly come here and not order a smashed griddle style burger and a heaping order of Russet, skin on fries. Unless you walk out with chest pain, you have ordered incorrectly. The servers are females in white work dresses that totally fits the interior schtick like you expect to see them working behind a soda fountain counter of a drugstore. They work hard to cover the place but do so politely and I have never had rude service here. Unless you are on a pro-obesity plan or are a Sumo wrestler, I would recommend not ordering a full shake/malt or a full order of fries. The full orders are huge and if you managed to finish them by yourself, I would bet your health plan would cancel your policy if they ever found out. For the money, I still think the Convention Grill makes some of the best burgers and fries in town.

I may be a little biased here as I've been coming to this restaurant for practically my whole life and I have never once been disappointed. The burgers are always delicious and the fries crispy and salty. The Malts are all delicious and great to dip your fries in. I will always want to come back for a cheeseburger, fries and a malt. What a great place to eat! A throw back in time. All the servers had white button down servers dresses (Mel's Diner) absolutely the best hand crafted milk shakes we have ever tasted. The patty melt and hamburgers were fabulous and the fries were the best. Service was off the charts, friendly and def a place to stop anytime you are in Minneapolis. The atmosphere was 50' ish and enjoyable. Def a throw back diner!

An acquaintance recommended this place so I decided to check it out. Cute, retro diner that's been around since 1934. I ordered a cheeseburger, malt, and side order of fries. I can't imagine what a regular order looks like as mine was enough for 4 people to share! My burger was good, though I didn't realize I had to order the California to get any toppings besides a few pickle slices. Would have been nice if the server had let me know. The malt was ok, which was a good thing because I didn't feel compelled to drink what was left in the "can", which I didn't need. Service was ok. All in all "ok", definitely not worth the nearly $20 bill for what I ate.

This place is as cute as can be. Our friend recommended this place to meet up, so we headed on over after an outing at Lake Harriet. Really cute little diner hamburger joint with plenty of seating in the front or back. Reminds me a little of Annie's where we also ate together. Menus at the table. Simple menu with burgers, fries, malts and other items . Salads, etc. Shared a big basket of fries. Love that they are hand cut. My burger was great. Burger with horseradish and chive cheese, one with muenster, one with American and one turkey burger. Great little joint and a nice afternoon lunch with a great friend and great conversation.

The CG has been around for years and no doubt the malts are out of this world! The fries are pretty darn greasy and good too. Honestly the rest is just ok, I know it use to be better. However...I get the check for 3 of us (1 adult 2 kids) it was $52? I'm sorry but that seems a little steep for lunch!?! Next time, I will just get malts and fries and not break the bank.

Really good patty melt. Hand cut fries were first rate. Cheeseburger was great. 1/2 order of fries would feed 4. Order a shake and split it. If I had one complaint, it would be the prices. The prices are a little more than the fast casual places.

I just don't like the burgers here. We are midst of a burger revolution, where there are dozens of places around that make fantastic burgers, whether it be upscale restaurants, gastropubs, diners, and take out chains, and I feel that Convention Grill has been left behind. I guess it makes sense, as there selling point is how old the restaurant is. I find the buns soggy-ish, and the patty bland. Don't get the blue cheese on your cheeseburger. The fries are very good. The hostess seated us at the counter, then we got no service for 10 minutes until I said something. No one there seemed to take any ownership of the fact that we wanted to eat, and the cooks patently ignored us. It's not there job to take care of us, but it's representative of the culture of a place.

It has been at least five years since I last ate at the Convention Grill but nothing seems to have changed in the interim. The menu is mostly burgers so if you are looking for variety this is probably not your place. I was with a group of five and we all had some variation of a cheeseburger. The burgers are fine but nothing spectacular. Standard ground beef on a bun - nothing exotic and a little boring. We had an order of fries which was enough for the entire table. I haven't ever been a big fan of their fries as they are sort of limp but other reviewers seem to like them. The five of us shared two chocolate malts but could not finish them as there was so much food. Service was fine. Even though it was a cold February evening they were busy. I am not a big fan of burgers and fries so I don't feel any need to return but the food is not bad and you get a lot of it.

The poster child for an original burger joint from the 40's. The waitressess (older women only) still sport the classic all white uniforms and white aprons and write down your order on a little green pad. The menu is quite limited - really the only reason to stop in is for a burger which you can get with or without grilled onions and 3 or 4 different types of cheeses. Lettuce and tomato are available but that's called the "California burger". Their fries are not to be missed - all hand cut - and a very generous portion. The small size easily feeds 3 adults. The other standout are the malts and shakes. They offer a couple dozen choices but we always gravitate to the chocolate (they make their own chocolate sauce). One is eought for two people to share but be careful - the malts come out right away so don't get filled up on the ice cream before your real food arrives! Definitely not a low calorie outing but hey, life is short! Live a litte (once in a while).

I would recommend this as a great 1950's throwback if you're feeling nostalgic. The portions are epic, but the burger and fries themselves are standard fare, and priced a bit higher. I had great service, to their credit, but left feeling like I was missing something like in Pretty Pink when Iona's friend has to count her keys because she didn't go to prom.

Take it back to the old school! Basket of fries, patty melt and a strawberry malt shake with the extra tin. Love this place especially since I've moved on from my neighborhood Steak N Shake. May seem pricey at first but portions are generous. Friendly crew makes for an enjoyable, tasty experience.

SO GOOD! Cobb salad was awesome, big portions of fries, and the atmosphere of this place is awesome! Definitely coming back.

This place has a special place In my heart and memory. I have been coming here to eat burgers fries and malts/milkshake since a kid with my family. This place has not changed at all(except that the jukebox is gone) the booths, tables and outfits the waitress wear is still the same it's a walk down memory lane, I love it. Also what has not changed is the food. Even have phosphate sodas still on the menu which is even before my time. They still make killer burgers. Hot off the griddle and a good variety of classic options,from a plain burger to a California burger to a pizza burger. But I stick to the classic. The fries are also my go to which are not from a bag made the old fashioned way and seasoned just right. My favorite thing is the milkshakes and Malts the portions on them are big and it's WORK to finish a full on your own, if you do like I do welcome to the winners club. Check this place out it's not as busy as it use to be so you'll get right in!

I have been coming here regularly for several years and feel the food and service has gone downhill. Burgers are okay, at best. Fries are so salty I can't eat them. Then, and here's a big one, "The Malts", particularly the chocolate malt, is almost unrecognizable as being a real malted milk. There is no malt flavor, whatsoever. The last three malts I've had there tasted like Hershey's syrup was mixed with some generic vanilla ice cream. The menu specifically says " Malted Milks" but, I swear there was no malt added to the concoctions I've been given. It's a shame because The Convention Grill is a landmark in Edina but, like all good things, it has come to pass.

Went to this place with a party of four, one of which is vegetarian. All were happy! The Grilled Cheese Club without meat is HUGE and delicious. Awesome homemade fries! Friendly, quick service. All around great experience!

Oh my God, Convention Grill was definitely spectacular. This place is awesome at what it does. Really delicious and wholesome. Staff is incredibly pleasant and will certainly help you with everything. You won't be disappointed.

WHAT HAPPENED ???? I moved away 4 years ago, and on my visit to Edina last week, I ordered take out from Convention Grill like I use to.... When I got to my sisters house (2 miles away), the burger was over cooked and tasted like it had been pre-cooked and re-heated. My sister ordered the turkey burger and it was rubbery. Fries were still good though. I did notice that Convention has dropped their fantastic onion rings - That was really disappointing! They were fantastic. Was Convention grill bought out by someone else while I was gone???

Had dinner here last night. As has been the case with all of my previous (many dozen) visits, my burger (I decided to go with with smoked cheddar and fried onions) was great, the fries outstanding and the half-Caesar Salad crisp and tasty. Portions are huge. While I didn't have room for a malt this time, I can tell you that they're very good and served with the frosty metal container so you can get every last gloppy drop of goodness that you ordered. Service is usually prompt and professional. It's the kind of place where you expect every server to be named Madge and to have worked there for 37 years. One thing, it can get very crowded and very noisy in a hurry. This can lead to long waits and make holding a conversation a challenge. BTW, For anyone who thinks they were served a "meatloaf sandwich" on a "seriously gross" too soft, untoasted bun with "overcooked and soggy fries" and a "soupy" malt, I'd be curious to know how they feel about My Burger. I happen to like their burgers about as well as those at the CG. However, they have a different taste and texture and are served on buttered, toasted buns. I prefer the fries and malts at the CG but have nothing bad to say about either at MB. Two very different approaches to the same thing. One old school, a slightly frayed around the edges neighborhood institution. The other sparkling with shiny newness and a fresh energy. Ah, choices. What a wonderful luxury to have so many options including these two worthy establishments.

Simple and limited menu. Good service. Good french fries and a decent mushroom and cheese hamburger. Tasty lime phosphate beverage. A seemingly malt-less chocolate malt. Odd that they would not honor the request of an elder man for a simple BLT (not on the menu). They offered instead a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato with some leaf lettuce on the side.

So I saw the Convention Grill across the street from the new Chatterbox and it looked like a cool place to try out. My friends said it was a cool idea to try it out and we were amazed. We walked in about noon on a Saturday and there were a ton of people waiting to be seated. We asked ourselves after seeing the tons of burgers being cooked, is this place for real? It is Frickin' cheeseburgers! Why are these rich people coming here for what is in actuality a diner dump that serves cheeseburgers? They have at least 30 people waiting to sit in a hamburger dump, after getting out of their Lexus SUVs, we were wondering if they placed a Perkins sign outside, they would never be here in a thousand years. After waiting 15 minutes to be seated, we got some Diet Pepsis and ordered our burgers, I ordered the Plaza Burger which is a Wisconsin style burger with Sour Cream and onions. The other guys in my party ordered the Mushroom cheeseburgers. We also ordered a large basket of fries to share between us. The burgers were great, but the fries were a little soggy, but they were a perfect amount to share with three guys. The service was great with lots of refills of pop, I don't think I would make another trip to there, but it was a nice old style diner. I did see an egg salad sandwich while waiting that looked awesome and their malts looked awesome as well!

It all starts with the malts. Malts so thick and so generously served that you are taken to a parallel universe of goodness. It was easily the best malt I've had in my life. Each malt is large enough to fill two malt glasses (makes sense, since they're not exactly cheap at $5.75). We ordered up a strawberry and an oreo - both were fantastic. The fries are similar to State Fair fries or Five Guys fries; i.e. legit potatoes deep fried. No frills here, folks. I was not blown away by the burger itself - good, not great. I wish you could customize the burgers more; the bacon cheeseburger came out with a simple bun, burger patty, cheese, and a couple slices of bacon. I would for sure opt for The Nook or Five Guys for the burger itself. Burgers are about $6, malts are nearly $6, plus $2 per person for fries, and you're quickly looking at a $15 meal. Granted, most people probably opt to split a malt, in which case your meal is a more reasonable $11 or so...

What a fun place! You walk in and the sights and smells of the diner fills your senses. The waiters have the old fashioned white malt shop getup which adds to the dining experience. We sat in the attached room that had walls of mirrors. I can safely say that it the first restaurant with walls totally covered with mirrors. I'm still not sure if I like it or not? The other part is a typical diner with a lunch counter complete with the grill behind it. This is strictly a burger and fry joint but they do it well. The hamburger was perfect and the fresh cut fries were addictive! The malts were good as well. Waitstaff was friendly and the food was served hot and fast. This is a must stop if you are in the St. Louis Park area.

Not a bad place. It's a little loud so keep that in mind. Small simple menu with pretty good food.

The fries are amazing, crispy, skin-on ruset golds, the malted milks are fantastic, and the burgers are well-portioned and delicious. Some notes: 1. The half-order of fries is enough for a few people 2. The egg salad sandwich is weirdly good 3. The burgers are great
